Okay this is a bit more advanced question and Im just curious.
My laptop is G1Sn with a 9500M GS in it. It runs very hot.
GPU during gaming is around 90C.
-I have a Cryo LX running full speed
-I have changed the thermal pastes twice. Currently using MX-2.

So, is there anything else I can do ? The warranty has run out so thats out of the question. Should I drill some holes to the case around the gpu ? Or any way to mod the Cryo LX to run with higher speed ?

the G1S is known for it cooling (or lack of).

if you make sure it does not exceed 95C... it should be okay.

... this does not mean that its healthy to run a GPU at that temp, its just good and stable enough before reaching danger/threshold temps (~100C).

Yeah, just been wondering why some people run their 9500M's within like 70-80C range without a cooler or changed thermal pastes
Guess I'll just have to live with it.

Guys, you mentioned about undervolting. I run windows on boot camp and my temps in rivatuner are in the 60's and i want to bring them to the 50's. If i under clock in windows, will my os x also get undervolted?

Hi, I am wondering what I can do to cool down my HDD.

    1. What notebook do you own/going to own (Make and Model)?
    p-7801u Gateway

    2. Specs of the notebook (List Details Please)
    Nvidia 9800m GTS
    P8400 2.26 Ghz CPU
    Hitachi 7200 rpm HDD
    4 GB RAM.

    3. Maximum and minimum temperature of CPU/GPU/HDD in Celsius and if possible idle and load times (see software guide)
GPU ranges from 38 to near 58. CPU ranges from 28 to around 40. Yeah I know this is low and it's because I only have Warcraft 3 at the moment to play.

The HDD, however, is almost a constant 50 degrees. This hasn't interfered with performance as I can tell, but the heat is pretty annoying under my right palm.

    4. What sort of cooling solutions are you looking for? (active solutions (fan coolers/passive, thermal paste...etc) )
    Anything.

    5. Budget for cooling solutions?
Free? I recently spent $50 to have my HDD replaced by Gateway only to have it have the same result in heating. I'm looking for something low price, unlike notebook coolers. Probably $7 dollars.

My guess is its either a hotpatch that may be causing it or W7 does seem to have far more transparent effects and you may want to try turning those off taking quite a load off your GPU

    ]

Try undervolting the CPU that should help with CPU heat leading to cooler other components such as GPU and HDD.. you'll be surprised at what it can do

I dont think undervolting in windows holds durring osx, if you google "undervolting OSX" you will see quite a few results which are worth looking at :)

Try lifiting the notebook, and undervolting :)

Notebook is lifted 1 cm off the table, and I'm not sure how undervolting would help a hot HDD.

Undervolting the CPU would generate less heat by the cpu and channel less heat down the heatsink and around the notebook. By cooling one component you cool the entire notebook and other components.

Sadly that's not how it is with the Gateway FX series. The HDD's are all the way by the touchpad and they are passively cooled. My HDD's spike to around 60*-62* even, with the whole laptop lifted.

    Software Solution.
I currently have a notebook cooler. I have the CoolerMaster NotePal Infinite.

thats pretty hot temps for the GPU.

when was the last time you cleaned out the fans/vents (with compressed air)?
.... that can make the world of difference.

and make sure the notebook is ONLY being used on clean, hard, flat surfaces
.... NEVER on laps, beds, pillows, couches (or any other soft surfaces)

you do not need to open your case to clean out the vents.

    just get some compressed air:
    - turn off your system
    - flush out the vents and fans with the air (in small bursts)

then check your temps again, you should be surprised. :)

My computer runs great with no problems but I notice that it can get somewhat hot at times when I'm gaming. I don't play games too often and I mostly browse the web, but I play games on occasion.

The pic above is using HWMonitor. The max temps were reached while I was playing StarCraft.

Do you think those temps are too high for playing StarCraft? I have my computer slightly elevated in the back but wanted to know if you think I should get a fan such as the Zalman?

    Thanks

Temps are safe, but I would start with some dust cleaning followed by undervolting. I say you can drop 10C from that. Also when you are using the notebook at a desk, lift up the back of the notebook with a stack of post-it notes or erasers or the like. :D

Very good work guys in the guied. Giorgos I also have the same problem as I live in greece and in summer tempratures are very high and my vaio becomes a BBQ grill (ok not too much but GPU is around 80-83c). I am going to buy a cooling base.

Thanks for the reply ;) Found the 2 Zalman's on eshop.gr, however I need someone to confirm that fans directions are ok with those coolers. Below find an image of backside of my laptop.

EDIT: Cleaned the fan just now and already gained 2-3o C and lots of DBs in noice :) Ordered Zalman 2000 finally so let's see what it can do..

I ssume 89oC maximum temperature of the CPU and 66o current are high enough, right?

Agreed, it would make sense to reaply/upgrade thermal paste on a CPU that is hitting 89, thats pretty hot.

    HDD is fine at 51C

    Hi,

My laptop is a hp pavilion dv5-1036tx which is similar to a dv5t. In normal temperatures and minimum load the cpu temperature goes up to 60 celcius at most but under load goes up to 90++ celcius but has nver gone above 100 yet. I was wondering what cooler i could use.I really don't care if it is what type . My budget would be anything below 100 USD. and my computer knowledge is intermediate.

    Thanks for the help.

    Ah it's you! :D

Ok the first thing is, how long have you not cleaned out the fan? If you haven't done that for a couple of months then that is definitely first on the list. Next, undervolting can take a big load off the cooling system by reducing the amount of heat the CPU is chunking out. Try these two first and see how it goes.

Hmm $20 is tricky. Normally I'd say the Zalman NC1000 but thats pricey. And your vents are right at the front which is friendly to most coolers. Let me have a think...

Though you can always go the home made route. :D

I think abit of undervolting will do a great job. Considering you system have an integrated GPU, it's not going to get very warm at all, I don't see the need in purchasing a cooler.

for some reason undervolting doesnt work really well for me. The cpu has 9.5 clock which wont appear on RMClock. So there is no voltage for that clock. When the cpu load, it still hit 9.5 clock which overdrive the voltage i set for 9x clock. Even with idle, with underclocking, there is no real different ... Maybe I didnt do it right ...

Try CrystalCPUID. It can detect half-multipliers.

There is a link in my signature for Asus G51 optimization. There's a guide there for using CCPUID.

Your CPU/GPU temps seem quite nice.
    the HDD temp is bad.

If you make your own cooler consider using 5V fans. That way you can connect them directly to usb power (since usb is 5V).

BTW I know it's not what you asked for but consider following the undervolting guide.

Yeah, i have tried that actually. It worked out fine at first, but decided not to since i plan to change my GPU soon. (260 might make it hotter though)

Do you have any possible guide or instruction for making own cooler? I dont have that much experience in this.
