The D900f is a beast which produces a lot of heat... i'm not suprised that the cooling pad didn't work well... there has to be a better cooling pad for D900F..

God I love my Thinkpad! :D

This was at the end of the day on my dock at work powering an external LCD. The dell on the other hand was using a cooler. Still not too bad though.

    PROBLEMS WITH AN HP530:

I've followed this guide and successfully replaced the thermal paste on my HP8510p. It went completely smooth. And the core temperatures dropped for an enourmous 50°C (the laptop was completely clogged with dust and to make it even worse the factory-applied thermal paste was a mess). Anyway, it's been idling at around 55°C and it never ever goes past 65°C (3D gaming and all).

I've just done this to a friend's notebook. The weird thing is, that it was filled with dust and idling at around 80-85°C. I took it apart following this guide. After I removed all of the plastic and the dust and the fan and the heatsink, I used the ArctiClean set to clean the cores and the heatsink, applied a nice thin layer of ArcticSilver and put it all back together again, to find that it's still idling at 75-80°C. I know that the CPU is a Intel Centrino Merom-2M (@1,60GHz) and that supposedly mobile CPUs run at higher temps... But this?
I took it apart again, redid everyhing, this time even more meticulously and still nothing. Whenever I do a CPU hungry task (compressing some random files with winrar for instance) the temps go all the way up to 84°C.

    Now here's the weird thing:
When my 8510p is hot, the air coming from the fan is also quite hot. When the 530 is at 84°C the air coming from the fan is room temp. And the CPU won't even return to below 70°C if left idling (or playing a random low res video file through VLC, which the usual work load of the laptop). And that leaves the fan running on full blast.
(I know, I did everyhing right (the heatsink screws surrounding the CPU are numbered and I did each one little by little, according to the rest), but it seems that the heat just isn't transferring from the CPU to the heatsink. And yes, I'm sure that the heatsink in on properly - when I was taking it apart the second time I could see that it stuck to the CPU just nicely.)

    And that's not all.
    Look at these screenshots:
Idling, a minute after powering up.

A short while after starting a CPU hungry task.

Is it me or are the measurements differing for 15°C ???

How is that even possible? (faulty temp sensors?)

[For more details about the notebook check the second guide]

When I removed the bottom cover (guarding the CPU, RAM, etc.) and put the table fan under my notebook, temperatures shot down to 45 degrees on idle, but with the cover on and the table fan running under it, the temperature stays ~58.
I'm thinking that because Asus' mistake of making a bottom cover with BARELY any vents or ones that are too small and not even placed in the right areas, I'm thinking about cutting the bottom cover to make the vents.
Has anyone ever done this or have any tips and suggestions?

    Thanks

This could increase temps of other components, like HDD. If you make vents, fan will draw air only from it because it easier, suction pressure is less. Even if you make vents, will you be using table fan all the time. This also opens more doors for dust to come in. Fan in the laptop is connected with heatpipe to devices that needs to be cooled down. It's not direct air blew from a fan.

Try like this, open the cover but don't put table fan to blow. Just to see the behaviour when the notebook fan will have less resistance. Monitor temps.

Other suggestion is a notebook cooler with fans.

actually, what I wanted to do was make the current vents bigger.
I've thought about the dust problem and all, and I was thinking of putting some kind of mesh right after the vent in order to impede dust from getting in.

Hello everyone, just filled the FAQ:

    1. Asus G71GX BB

    2. P8700, 260M GTX

    3. Idle: CPU 41 /GPU 50 /HDD 38
    Heavy Load: CPU 65 /GPU 84 /HDD 42

Those are with a simple notebook stand, not cooler

    4. Notebook Cooler

    5. $80

    6. Intermediate

I'm looking for a notebook cooler that would shave at least 5C off my GPU. It was about 85F in Chicago most of the last week. Summer is knocking on the door and I think the above temps would jump significantly.
I'm using my notebook always on desk on my cheap notebook stand. The stand allows very good air circulation thus decreasing the temps with at least 4-5C. I'm wondering if I could find a cooler that would help decrease the temps with another 5C.
Read that most people looking for a good notebook cooler buy the Cryo LX, but saw quite a few customer reviews saying that it is not very appropriate for the Asus G71gx and decreases the temps with just 2-3 C.

I would very much appreciate your advice. Thanks in advance.

i would get cryo LX but i do know that there's a huge notebook cooling pad out there by thermaltake or something which would shave off more... another issue for ur GPU is downclocking due to drivers making temps high... get the 195.62 drivers or any driver which runs stable for u and try this riva tuner tweak.. it will undervolt ur GPU in a way and drop a lot of temps.. and unlike BIOS flashing , if it doesn't work , it will only cause BSOD...

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=456313

I have used this and it dropped my OCed GPU load temps from 85C to 70-75C...

    Thanks Sean,
Unfortunately RivaTuner does not support 260m GTX out of the box so I can't use the interesting tweak you mentioned. I've tried video BIOS flashing under DOS to decrease the voltages but was getting General Protection Fault all the time.
So the only thing I can use right now is an efficient notebook cooler. I guess I'll be getting the Cryo LX after all.

Dude... I am having the Dell Studio XPS 1645 with the i7 and it gets pretty damn hot..... So i bought the Notepal Infinite (the same one with the four USB ports).... My laptop is having the 9 cell battery and hence the laptop by itself is a little raised on the back-side to allow proper air intake.... The only issue is that the XPS blows air out through the back.... And if your cooler is near a wall then it is a problem as it takes the hot air that is coming out and blows it back in (intake is at the rear).... But if you are having a 6-cell battery along with the laptop then the laptop will sit properly (just a little pops out of the cooler on both sides 1-2cms).... And the sir flow will hit all the intakes properly and cool this laptop....

Just make sure that the rear of the laptop is not very close to any wall....

Hope this helps..... I think a better choice for us DELL STUDIO XPS users is the CRYO LX as it has three 120mm fans and the blow is pretty damn good....
Or also have a look at Notepal X2 or the U2(better).....

Hi! I would like to ask for help in cooling my new laptop. At the moment, I'm thinking about two possible ways to do this: undervolting and buying a Zalman 1000 or 2000. I'd like to hear your thoughts please :) I already have Artic Silver 5 applied to the CPU and GPU.

To be honest, I've read the undervolting guide at least three times and I really like to do it but I'm also nervous. Help?

    1. What notebook do you own/going to own (Make and Model)?
    Sager NP8690

    2. Specs of the notebook (List Details Please)
Display 15.6” HD+ 16:9 LED Backlit Wide screen (1600x900) Super Clear Glare Type Screen
    Processor Intel® Core™ i7-720QM, 1.60-2.80GHz, (45nm, 6MB L3 cache)
Thermal Compound - Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU
    Graphics Video Card ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD5870 1024MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11
    8GB DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory (2 SODIMMS)
    Primary Hard Drive ~ 500GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache)

    3. Maximum and minimum temperature of CPU/GPU/HDD in Celsius and if possible idle and load times (see software guide)

I used HWMonitor to record the idle temps:
CPU 50, HDD 34, GPU (not shown in HWMonitor - dunno why)

    4. What sort of cooling solutions are you looking for? (active solutions (fan coolers/passive, thermal paste...etc) )
    -ditto as above

    5. Budget for cooling solutions?
    - 40GBP (60USD)

    6. Your general computer knowledge (Beginner to Expert)
    - Intermediate in both hardware and software
*I've managed to replace the CPU of two laptops
*Completely dismantled at least 5 laptops and putting them back together and managed to make them work

**I just learned that the i7 720QM can't be undervolted

    Hallo,all.
I've tried to search the thread similar to this but don't found it,so here goes.
I've got Notebook Acer Aspire 5920G with Specification:
    1.Intel Core 2 Duo T7500
    2.Nvidia Geforce 8600 M GT
    3.2 GB DDR2
    4.250 GB HDD
    5.OS Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bit

I've had it for almost 3 years, and occassionaly I clean up the dust by opening the back case.
I've also Undervolt it and I'm using Notepal Infinite right now as my cooler.

My temperature when I'm on desktop is approx. 45-60 degree celcius for CPU,but when I start playing 3D game (right now playing x-blades),my temperature will be rising until 84 degree celcius in just approximately 15-20 minutes.Fearing overheating,I'll exit the game. And after that,my temperature will goes to normal again (approx. 50 degree - 60 degree).

My question is,how can I fix this?because half of the reason I buy this notebook is for gaming???

PS:Before, when I'm using windows xp my temperature only shots up to 74 degree celcius playing the same game.

Hi folks. I really really need some help and I've seen some nice solutions presented here for people.
My laptop used to work mostly fine until recently. When getting hot the fans would switch on and cool it down again, all fine.
Recently though, the fans don't activate when required. At least not consistently. The main problems arise when I use CPU-intensive applications.
Perfect example is Diablo II. It's not even CPU-intensive per se, it's just that it keeps the CPU in a continuous 100% usage state. The temp spikes up instantly, and even when the fans spin a little, once the temp spikes past 60 degrees the fans stop spinning completely.
This is actually the main problem with my pc. The fans no longer seem to have a full spin state, they either spin a little and then stop or just never start, once going past 60 degrees celsius.
I've tried various software (Speedfan, I8k etc). Nothing works. There are no fan settings in Dell Bios. I can't do anything and it sucks.
I was thinking maybe a temporary fix would be some kind of registry entry or program that forces the fans full throttle.
As far as I can tell, an issue lies with some temp thresholds. It's always past 64 celsius that the fans stop spinning. Once CPU temp goes below 64 fans start spinning again.
Could there be a bug in ACPI relating to temp-detection?
Please, if you could help it would mean the world to me.
I've had multiple happenings of the CPU going to 80, 85, even 90 degrees and over celsius, with crashes.
And once it goes past 80 it's really really hard to cool it down again.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    1. I have a Dell Latitude E4300

    2. P9400 CPU, 4gb ddr-3, 60gb sata hdd.

    3. CPU temps under normal usage would be a minimal of 39 at boot, idling at 43-45 degrees. When watching a movie or with light gaming might go to 55-70 degrees. Normally.

    4. Software fan controls.

    5. None

    6. Intermediate - enough to work with registry's etc.

CPU is fine, but GPU does seem a little high. Although I don't think GPU's start throttling until something over 100 degrees.

    Guess I'm a little late to this thread but;

Wonder if I could further decrease my temperatures without compromising performance.

    1. What notebook do you own/going to own (Make and Model)?

    Vostro 1500

    2. Specs of the notebook (List Details Please)

In the sig but; T7500, 8400M GS 128 MB, PM965 chipset, 4 GB RAM, 60 GB SSD

    3. Maximum and minimum temperature of CPU/GPU/HDD in Celsius and if possible idle and load times (see software guide)

Lowest idle CPU is 29C (23.5C ambient room temp), full load doesn't go above 62C (same ambient room temp). Lowest GPU idle is 36C (same ambient temp) and 60C (full gaming for hours and hours). HDD has been replaced with SSD

    4. What sort of cooling solutions are you looking for? (active solutions (fan coolers/passive, thermal paste...etc) )

Already have an Antec 200mm notebook cooler, already repasted CPU when I upgraded from T5470 with CM Thermal Fusion, though I could do AS5. Already underclocked CPU. Wonder if it's possible to drop CPU/GPU even further,

    5. Budget for cooling solutions?

Already spent a majority, most things don't cost me that much.

    >3 years old now. Old idle times even when gaming (counter-strike 1.6 was all I played then) GPU- 50-70C

fast foward to 2011 (no gaming, just videos/web and ms office tasks)

    CPU Idles - ~42-50C
GPU - Idle is over 100C - web browsing, 115-120C and then shuts down - connected to an external CRT monitor, which blanks out at that point and then manual hard-reset.

Laptop is on power supply, CPU fans kick in throughout the idling every 30sec-1min, especially when web browsing.

Tried compressed compressed air dusting all accessible vents and user friendly panels that can be opened (RAM/CPU/HDD) - visibly the areas were not dusty and vents are not "blocked"

Currently and in the past, used cheaper cooling pads - right now, I have a generic one that only has 1 of 2 fans working and is about to die.

Discussion on the Compal Forums might suggest a "loose heatsink" -

Looking for the moment, the most effective cooler to drop down these temps until a more long-term solution has been determined.

Price, Form and Sound factors are not of concern. Considering from amazon searches - Cryo LX or Thermaltake single 230mm fan. If there's anything more effective, please let me know!

If it helps to determine what might be the best option/route at the moment - Here are links to the unit's disassembly guide and assembly video [work friendly safe]

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/compal/120075-compal-hel80-disassembly.html

    http://www.cizgi-tagem.org/resource/vfiles/tagem/dms_file/408/EL80-Disassembly_Guide.pdf

Many thanks - I am somewhat hesitant on how to assess this, especially for a loose heatsink. Knowledge Skill level - beginner.

Let's see here :), got a new laptop this month, and wouldn't mind ideas related to lowering the temperature of the CPU a bit.

    1. What notebook do you own/going to own (Make and Model)?
    Samsung 9 (900X3A-A01)

    2. Specs of the notebook (List Details Please)
    13.3" | i5-2537M @ 1.4~2.3GHz | HD3000 | 8GB DDR3 | 120 GB SSD | No optical drive

    3. Maximum and minimum temperature of CPU/GPU/HDD in Celsius and if possible idle and load times (see software guide)
    Measured with RealTemp and HWMonitor:
    Minimum: 35
    Maximum: 71
    Idle (or light browsing): 40-50
    Load: 60-70
I've never seen the SSD's temperature exceed 30.
    Ambient temperatures are around 23-30.

    4. What sort of cooling solutions are you looking for?
Any, but I have never applied thermal paste in a laptop before.

    5. Budget for cooling solutions?
    Flexible.

    6. Your general computer knowledge (Beginner to Expert)
I'm definitely not an expert, but got at least a little experience :).

    Notes
    • Fans and vents are clean.
    • Undervolting an ULV-CPU? It's SandyBridge anyway, not sure it'd work well.
    • ZM-NC1000 Notebook cooler does not appear to lower the temperatures at all (probably due to the computer's airflow/vent design?).

hey guys i did everything forge did to the G51 and some more...you guy's got any other ideas of things i can do? I current have a 920xm ES at 85 TDP and GTX 260m running with OC and I am at 76-85C for cpu...acceptable but I would like to get it down a little more. Check my guide and see if you can find anything else I can do...surprised i got the 920xm with 85 TDP to work with decent temps in the G51j lol :) Since its all air cooled it varies a ton with ambient temps so room has to be a decent temp so as soon as it starts to warm up in room i have to put window AC on otherwise its toast :)

I just have a quick question about fan placement. I have a coolermaster U1, with the adjustable fan, where you can put it wherever you want on the bottom of the laptop. Should I be aiming to put the fan right by my laptop's fan intake? where should i put it?

well that's the thing, I can't really tell if the fan is doing anything, if at all.... when I put my hand to the fan it doesn't seem to be really pushing the air, more just disturbing it a little.

put it right under the intake vent. it's not a very strong fan, but it will be pushing cool air into the chassis if placed in the right place.

    1. What notebook do you own/going to own (Make and Model)? HP Compaq NW 9440

    2. Specs of the notebook (List Details Please), Intel Core 2 T7600 @ 2.33 gHz, 1 GB DDR2, 90 GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD, nVidia Quadro FX 1500 M (512 MB)

    3. Maximum and minimum temperature of CPU/GPU/HDD in Celsius and if possible idle and load times (see software guide). CPU 45-55 GPU: 60 when idle, 70-96 when busy (note: did not test this for a prolonged period of time) HDD: 30 (it's an SSD, no worries there). Experiencing occasional GPU crashes in 3D games, suspecting this may be overheating.

    4. What sort of cooling solutions are you looking for? (active solutions (fan coolers/passive, thermal paste...etc) ) Active, most likely hardware-based, preferably not requiring external accessories.

    5. Budget for cooling solutions? $25 or thereabouts.

It may be time for you to take it apart and clean the dust between the heatsink fins and the fan (usually you cant blow all of it out without taking the notebook apart even if you use compressed air).
And while you have it open, change the thermal paste on the GPU and CPU.
It's and old notebook so the paste could have degraded.

If there is a gap between the GPU die and the heatsink, use a copper shim instead of a thermal pad. Same for the northbridge.

All of that should be more than enough to get your temps in order.

    16GB ram
    240GB Intel 525 mSata
    Seagate 750GB Hybrid drive

CPU runs very hot despite being on a well ventilated stand running 2 90cfm+ 120MM fans. Gets near 100C on the dock and no cooler in a 74F room. Think it might be time for a custom cooler.

Both under identical stress. Have to admit Im not terribly impressed with the cooling, I expected much better from such a high end rig especially with my meticulous cleaning and care.

What kind of stress is the system under? If it's a real workload, then I would suggest re-pasting or re-applying with a quality TIM immediately.

If it's a synthetic stress test (Intelburn, etc.) then a re-pasting is still in order - but not as urgent unless the synthetic stress testing is the main use of the machine... and yeah, Dell's, like all Apple products, run much too hot in my experience...

Ok, I'm back to using my P-6831FX with a T8100 installed, instead of my of MBA.

I am noticing serious cooling issues recently and I know that the heatsinks are free of dust. I cleaned those last summer and then put this laptop away in storage.

I put some old thermal paste on my T8100 when I did the install last summer, but I don't remember what it is or if it was any good. I'm very out of the loop and would like a recommendation on a good thermal paste. I have noticed that the T8100 is slightly thinner than my old CPU so I do need to bridge a bigger gap between my heatsink and CPU. Where would I buy a copper shim if I do need one?

hi mates, i need some help to clarify a doubt, i hope it's not OT: i'd like to use in msi gx660 laptop this special thermal compound, not properly a paste but a liquid metal:

Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra - top performance for High-End systems!

I would use it on the cpu only, but i fear that using it on something always in movement (a laptop) could be dangerous.
Anyone has experiences or feedback to share about this product? thx for your help!

I have it sitting on a shelf but haven't used it in a notebook. It should be applied very thin (as all thermal goops/compounds) and will stay where you put it so notebook use isn't a problem. The big "problem" with it is that it eats aluminium so the contact area of the heatsink have to be purely copper or nickel coated copper.
