Soon after the official NVIDIA RTX 20XX launch, it was inevitable that AIB partners would be showing off their own custom versions of the cards. With this, we stopped by EVGA on the Caseking booth at Gamescom 2018 to check out the three models that they had on display. The dual fan RTX 2080, FTW3 triple fan RTX 2080 and the dual fan RTX 2080Ti.

Hey, if I can get a new EVGA 1080Ti SC2 to match the one I already have for like $500-$600 or so, I would jump on that. No need to rush out and pay a stupid price for a new GPU when I can rack up a butt-load of points on HWBOT with 1080Ti SLI. The more desperate they become to sell off obsolete stock left on hand the better off I will be, LOL.

If RTX 2080 Ti turns out to be extra special, I can always do that later on. No need to get in a hurry.

I just keep thinking: If performance was really that great over pascal, they'd be flogging that. Not new features.

4K 144Hz is embryonic as is RT. Simply put, Pascal is powerful enough in its current form and this is a release because Nvidia need a hype train to keep their YoY sales up, not because gamers want something newer and better.

Why they have priced it so high then? Because they have no competition obviously, but I think they may have misjudged the hype and desperation amongst the market.

The Ray tracing enabled games will be overly reflective just like everything was when specular lighting and bump maps started being a thing. Think Doom 3... No duct tape or dust on Mars, plenty of polish tho

GPU Prices Plunge: GTX 1080 Ti Now $526
by Avram Piltch August 21, 2018 at 8:00 AM
    https://www.tomshardware.com/news/best-nvidia-gpu-deals,37668.html

"The king is dead. Long live the king.

With Nvidia's new RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti due out next month and the RTX 2070 coming in October, the prices on the current-gen 10-series cards are already dropping like a rock. And we expect even more discounts as we move closer to launch.

Zotac has been particularly aggressive with its deals on Amazon. As of this writing, you can get a Zotac GTX 1080 Ti card for just $526, reduced from $679. Remember that, just a few weeks ago, you had to pay $850 to $1,000 for GTX 1080 Ti cards.

If you want a GTX 1080, you'll find one for a mere $449 and a GTX 1070 for just $296.

We'll update this page as more deals on Nvidia-powered cards appear.

I don't remember Doom 3 being overly reflective. I remember it having some nice bump maps, but it was pretty dark for the most part, which was actually the perfect showcase for the unified lightning and shadowing system when the lights came on. The shadows were all hard-edged stencil shadows, but they were very accurate. Your flashlight and muzzle flashes all cast dynamic shadows, which was insane for the time. The game from that era which I remember being overly reflective was Half-Life 2.

Nvidia aren't shipping anything yet, it's all Marketing Puffery until production units are shipped, tested, and reviewed by end users that purchased their own units - and they are doing useful work with Tensor Cores + RT Cores...otherwise it's a waste of silicon die space. :)
"“AI and real-time ray tracing are transforming the way designers and artists work,” said Amy Bunszel, senior vice president of Design & Creation Products at Autodesk. “Autodesk and NVIDIA are working together to deliver these advancements to the market and we look forward to the new tools and capabilities Quadro RTX will deliver to our customers.”

Leading workstation and systems providers have also voiced their support for new Turing-based Quadro RTX GPUs:

I spent $500 on Craigslist and this is what happened

This was definitely my most risky purchase. The intention behind this was first and foremost to get the best deal I possibly could because that matters a lot to me and the second was put my Craigslist skills to the test. Most people believe that it is luck of the draw no matter what kind of person you meet with, but I firmly believe that there is always a perfect way to handle each interaction/transaction so that you never get screwed.

Anyways, I really tried a different approach to this video than I usually do. Let me know if you like the way this turned out and if you didn't let me know too. That said, enjoy the video!

I didn't have money to buy both PC and consoles while my friends bought them both. But, I always liked gaming on keyboard/mouse rather than using a gamepad or whatever they call it! I felt PC was better than console, in fact it is!
If MS/Xbox S made a real gaming PC then it was a better deal. I'm guessing its not gonna happen till 3000 AD/AF.

Tomb Raider Developers Response to low FPS

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080Ti unable to run Shadow of the Tomb Raider with 60fps at 1080p with RTX On [UPDATE: Developers respond]
    AUGUST 21, 2018 JOHN PAPADOPOULOS 373 COMMENTS
    https://www.dsogaming.com/news/nvid...-tomb-raider-with-60fps-at-1080p-with-rtx-on/

"As soon as NVIDIA revealed its new RTX graphics cards, we’ve been wondering whether real-time ray tracing would be worth the performance hit or not. And it appears that its high-end GPU that will cost $1300 is unable to run Shadow of the Tomb Raider with RTX On at 1080p and with 60fps.

Our friends over at PCGamesHardware have shared an off-camera video, showing the game running with real-time ray tracing on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080Ti:

Thankfully, a FRAPS overlay was present and we can see that this new GPU can run the game with 30-70fps.

For the majority of the short video, Shadow of the Tomb Raider ran with 40fps. Not silky smooth, right? The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080Ti was able to push more than 60fps when Lara was facing a wall but I’m pretty sure that PC gamers will want to admire the environments instead of looking at the sky or the ground so that they can run the game smoothly. When solving puzzles and exploring the environments, the framerate was between 30fps and 45fps.

Do also note that the game was running at 1080p, meaning that those with 1440p monitors will witness even worse framerates.

At this point we should note that Shadow of the Tomb Raider also supports some other resource-hungry graphical features on the PC, like CHS. Moreover, even the game’s PC trailer – that came out yesterday – featured slowdowns and now we know why!

    UPDATE:

The developers of Shadow of the Tomb Raider have responded to the lower than expected performance of the game on the GeForce RTX 2080Ti when using RTX. According to them, the current build of the game features an early work in progress version of NVIDIA’s tech, and the final version will run better.

The Nvidia Ray Tracing technology currently being shown in Shadow of the Tomb Raider is an early work in progress version. As a result, different areas of the game have received different levels of polish while we work toward complete implementation of this new technology.
    — Tomb Raider ( @Tombraider) August 21, 2018

The final Nvidia Ray Tracing integration will be released as a post-launch update, and we are excited for our fans to experience it first-hand.

Those die area looks like AMD GPUs with their share of mammoth amount of cores. I am thinking OpenCL version of RTX tech for AMD Vega and see similar 10 GRTops count in specific scenes/renders besides the avg. sampling rate being lower than peak.
I think Nvidia is aiming to take AMD's shares by providing GPUs that can game and crunch complex calculations almost rivaling Pascal Titan.

RTX 2080 Ti not Released Until October 20th?
    https://forums.geforce.com/default/...rtx-2080-ti-not-released-until-october-20th-/

"Noticed that there wasn't a RTX thread, so I'm not really sure where to put this.

I was under the impression that the RTX 2080 Ti would be released September 20th. However once I pre ordered my RTX 2080 Ti, the email confirmation had expected shipping as October 20th.

It says right on Nivida website that the expected launch of the RTX 2080 is September 20th 2018.

So the RTX 2080 and the RTX 2080 Ti have different launch dates?

    #1 Posted 10 hours ago"

    "When did you preorder?

I put my order in about 60 minutes after it went up, and my email confirmation says 9/25/2018.

I suspect it is based upon projected inventory, so the later you ordered, the later the estimated ship date.

    #2 Posted 10 hours ago"

    RTX Preorder details
    https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/99d77c/rtx_preorder_details/

"I just got off the phone with a significant computer parts retailer (in the UK) and they told me that sellers are not actually receiving any stock until the 20th of September. So if you order through any retailer (other than Nvidia’s site) you shouldn’t expect to receive a card until a least a few days after then. Just a heads up, I got told this and thought it could be important/helpful to you guys/girls"

GeForce RTX: A Beast for Today’s Games — and Tomorrow’s

"Open box. Start your game. Witness the impossible.

Our GeForce RTX series GPUs — the first gaming GPUs based on our new NVIDIA Turing architecture — fuse next-generation shaders, real-time ray tracing, and all-new AI capabilities. Game developers are buzzing.

But right out of the box it gives you a huge performance upgrade for games you’re playing now.

GeForce RTX GPUs deliver 4K HDR gaming on modern AAA titles at 60 frames per second — a feat even our flagship GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GPU can’t manage."

"Our new Turing GPUs — the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, 2080 and 2070 — arrive ahead of a holiday shopping season supercharged by sub-$300 4K monitors and a lineup of big titles from top game franchises."
    nvidia rtx article image 2.JPG
    " Big Game Hunting
For game after game, Turing delivers big performance gains (see chart, above). Those numbers get even bigger with deep learning super-sampling, or DLSS, unveiled Monday.

DLSS takes advantage of our tensor cores’ ability to use AI. In this case it’s used to develop a neural network that teaches itself how to render a game. It smooths the edges of rendered objects and increases performance.

That’s one example of how Turing can do things no other GPU can. This makes Turing’s full performance hard to measure.

But looking at today’s PC games — against which GPUs without Turing’s capabilities have long been measured — it’s clear Turing is an absolute beast.

Get ready to hear it roar!"

Cool, that's a surprise, so that's showing a 40-60% increase in performance going from GTX 1080 to RTX 2080, with supposedly like-for-like settings. The DLSS portion of the chart is I'm supposing when turning off AA in game and activating DLSS (which is AI accelerated anti aliasing, my understanding) - so that's showing how little fps cost DLSS AA is in comparison to whatever AA technique they had activated in the 'control' group. DLSS allows for up to around 2x the performance when compared to GTX 1080, although we don't know the AA technique used in the control so we don't know how fair a comparison it is. In my first sentence I wrote 40-60% increase in performance because that's supposedly comparing like-for-like game settings so is showing the raw gaming power increase of Turing vs Pascal - I really wasn't expecting such a big increase, I thought it was only gonna be 25% max! Turing looks like a better buy now, we need to know more about the context of that graph though in terms of what settings were used, it's a little vague.

Well, as typical anything from Nvidia is going to point out the positives couched in particulars that make them look best, so we still need to wait for the real world tests by owners - at least trusted reviewers, that we cross-check and verify against other reviewers results - so we can know what we can expect from our new RTX GPU.

The big question is, why couldn't Nvidia figure out this was the top question we all wanted answered at the reveal of the new GPU's:

    THE GAMING PERFORMANCE!! :D

Of course it would be nice to see a comparison of the now $500 1080ti's...:

The control group used TAA, at least according to AnandTech: https://www.anandtech.com/show/1326...x-2080-performance-numbers-announces-ansel-rt
The pricing is still too high though. You're paying 50% more for a 50% improvement. We used to get a bigger generational increase while paying about the same.

They only talk about TAA being used in the Infiltrator Demo, and that's not in relation to the Infiltrator Demo in the chart either, so I don't think we know the AA used in the control group in the chart.

Yes, you're right about the pricing!

You think the control group might be using downsampling? Because TAA is almost free in terms of performance cost. Going from TAA to DLSS does not suddenly jump you from +50% to +100%.

Something I watched, need to figure out what, suggested that even if the DLSS was only 75% as good as normal anti-aliasing results at 4k, the frame rate increase was worth it.

That sounded to me at the time like DLSS was rendering at a lower resolution and using the data driven (yeah it needs reference data generated and downloaded to the users computer for the game at a resolution to work) AI to create images for display at 4k.

Some have mentioned it doesn't make sense that simply replacing the anti-aliasing method would result in 2x FPS, but rendering at a lower resolution and then using AI and reference data to make those images 4k images would make that possible.

That would mean that the performance comparison results at 4k with DLSS is a "cheat", saddling the 1080 with full 4k rendering, while the 2080 is rendering at a lower load using the AI to "up-sample images display to 4k.

Anyone have a reference on exactly how DLSS does this? Is it automatically when enabled rendering at a lower resolution - or otherwise "cheating" by rendering less frames and using the AI to piece together a "as good as" frame stream at the 4k display resolution?

    Update:
This is the closest explanation I can find so far, but I think he missed spoke "normal resolution", I think he means lower resolution than intended display resolution.:

"Now, DLSS is a form of oversampling Anti-Aliasing, only instead of actually rendering the frame at higher resolution then downscaling it, you are rendering the frame at normal resolution, then using Deep-Learning assisted upscaling algoritm to produce a frame of higher resolution, then downscale that frame to your intended resolution.

"So, the proper way to define DLSS is Deep-Learning Assisted Aproximation Oversampling Anti-Aliasing, but DLAAOAA is one hell of an acronym, DLSS just sounds better."

    That's what I expected. :)

The 2xxx series are RTX, and the GTX 11xx series are normal GPU's - pure non-RTX GPU's that have a lower power requirement to fit into laptops.

The higher power and cooling requirements for the huge RTX die doubling size to add the RT and Tensor cores can't be scaled, as in MaxQ, due to the poor FPS performance in ray-tracing even with the 1080ti at full power, so Nvidia might as well either disable those sections or not include them in laptop GPU dies, and non-RTX desktop GPU's.

But it is confusing when we've already seen GTX 2060/2050 GPU's mentioned. Maybe the GTX 11xx series are for laptop's only?

Still many questions to be answered...like will there be desktop versions of the GTX2080/GTX1180 / GTX2070/GTX1170, or will there only be high-end GTX laptop versions?
    twilight-zone-get-out-promo.jpg

More confusing is that they are making an RTX 1080 / RTX 1070... I can't imagine how slow those are going to be at raytracing @ 1080p given the full power 2080ti isn't holding firm with 60fps @ 1080p

"Perhaps the most intriguing tidbit from the announcement is that the aforementioned Sky models will support future GPUs such as the "GTX 1180, GTX 1170, RTX 1080, RTX 1070" due to their versatile MXM 3 slots. Had Eurocom mentioned these GPUs before Gamescom, then we would have been quick to label them as placeholder names. However, the reseller is explicitly mentioning these GPU names almost two full days after the public reveal of the desktop RTX series in Cologne.

It's possible that Nvidia will introduce a different naming convention yet again for its next generation of laptop GPUs. At best, the diverging names could simply be an attempt by the chipmaker to better distinguish between its laptop and desktop GPUs since current mobile Pascal GPUs have the exact same names as their desktop counterparts. At worse, however, we could be seeing a relatively minor refresh for mobile gamers."

DLSS doesn't have to be perfect, only good enough
    https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/99g245/dlss_doesnt_have_to_be_perfect_only_good_enough/

    Tech_AllBodies 3 points 4 hours ago
"The idea is it's better/cheaper computationally than rendering a native higher resolution and/or other forms of MSAA.

i.e. you could run 1080p + DLSS on a 4K monitor and it'd look nearly as good as native 4K. Or you could run 1440p + DLSS and it'd look better than 1440p with 4x MSAA, and also run faster.

Latency is just the time it takes to render and deliver the frame. So the idea is you'll take advantage of DLSS to do MUCH less render time (because you'll render at lower res and/or turn off all AA), then add DLSS as post processing, but the whole thing will take less time than doing that level of quality natively, while looking 95%+ as good."

DLSS could work in tandem with DSR.
    https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/99idv2/dlss_could_work_in_tandem_with_dsr/

RSF_Deus 2 points an hour ago
"Ah, I think I understand what you mean, for example DSR at 4K, but game set to 50% resolution scale instead of 100% but with DLSS to get an "AI upscaler" ?"

So, DLSS is a "cheat"?, not really rendering at 4k - or DLSS is padding frames to fluff up the FPS numbers - so at what resolution are those Nvidia published benchmarks using DLSS for the RTX2080 rendered? :D

I think it's safe to assume the actual renders are at 4k per Nvidia's graph. I just wish they had included a baseline for the quality settings and AA utilized.

Why would you think it's safe to assume that? :)

They show 4k DLSS is 2x the performance of the 1080, a huge jump up just from changing the anti-aliasing method to DLSS, that's not possible without changing some other variable, like the resolution.

Otherwise simply disabling anti-aliasing would cause the performance to jump up even higher, and that's also not possible.

The non-DLSS sections of the performance graph bars make sense, the DLSS jump in performance doesn't, unless the rendering resolution or some other quality setting(s) was also dropped to reduce the load on the GPU, increasing the FPS.

It could be that DLSS is generating "additional" frames other than those rendered by the GPU, padding / inflating the FPS numbers. Not real rendered FPS, but DLSS "fluffed" FPS.

Something is going on, maybe someone can point me to the docs that explain it all?

Well, in those charts DLSS is actually providing anything from 25% to 55% increase in performance over non-DLSS Turing, not quite the 50-100% you mention. But yeah, I was gonna say that TAA is not a massive performance hit, although TAA x2 (x3 if it exists, not sure) has a bigger hit if I recall correctly. So yes, maybe that indicates that a more expensive form of AA was being used in the control group, because like you intimate DLSS doesn't magically increase fps, it just replaces any existing more expensive forms of AA, so DLSS won't increase frame rates above a no AA control group for instance.

Thing is though, if the new GPUs aren't very power efficient, then what else can we expect, you can only fit so much power within a laptop & those extra Ray Tracing Cores & Tensor Cores all take up a significant power budget - the next architecture after Turing on 7nm might be the architecture that suits laptops.

Take DLSS out of the equation and your still at 1.5X, that's my assumption (everything else being equal). We definitely need more info on settings, AA, and the DLSS settings for the 2X performance. But the 1.5X is a straight 4k (like for like) comparison (quality settings unkown).

That's not the part in question. But, it probably should be too. Considering we don't know the game runtime settings, or much else about the runtime environment.

The DLSS is suspect, that's what I am trying to get characterized. Brush it off if you like, but given the sum of all the "oddities" with this release, I'd stay away until everything is accounted for, all of the oddities explained.

Maybe after all is explained, the 1/2 of the die we are all interested in will be worth the wait. :)

RTX 2070 is more like 10% faster than desktop 1080. And 1080 desktop cards is a bit faster than the desktop mobile 1080. Once again remember the fiasco or call it “The Scam” 880M vs. 780M :D Around 10% Performance increase on same Kepler. Maybe Nvidia can squeeze out a few % more this time? :p To make it looks prettier. YEEES

But will NVIDIA make the same (or similar) stunt? That’s the question.

10-15 or even 25% increases in performance with coming 1180 vs. 1080 is too little after over +2 years on same old Pascal.

I’m not brushing it aside, DLSS may be of great benefit down the road with consideration to 4K. It’s just to early to tell, and only independent reviews and benchmarks will reveal what’s behind the green curtain.

RTX shows a radical new approach to creating a GPU, introducing new AI and raytracing features whilst keeping just enough of the old stuff to still be better than what came before. I analyse and speculate about Nvidia's RTX series of graphics cards and what it means for the future.

Very good insight into what is really going on. New tech always smells sweeter than the existing stuff. When you let go of Fanboyism (not real word) over NVIDIA products, you begin to realize that these cards represent the manufacturer investing in the future. A future that mainstream users don’t need to rush out and partake. Eventually, we may all need to be there. Time for the competition (AMD and Intel) and the software developers to ante up. I’ll cash in when all the cards are on the table.
