The RTX 2070 is considered NVIDIA's most "affordable" RTX-series graphics card yet. But the Founders Edition is still $600 which is A LOT of money. In this video we take a closer look at this card, its specifications and potential performance.
CORRECTION: Our chart showed the GTX 1070 to have the GP106 core. This was a typing error. As mention in the video, it actually uses the same GP104 core from the 1070 Ti / 1080.

NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti Delivery Delayed Again, to be Sent October 5th-9th
    by Raevenlord Wednesday, September 26th 2018 10:22
    https://www.techpowerup.com/247962/...very-delayed-again-to-be-sent-october-5th-9th

"In another delay to NVIDIA's RTX 20-series launch, the company has announced, via email to buyers, that delivery and availability of the graphics card has been pushed for one week. The card, which had an already delayed release schedule set to September 27th, now has a delivery date that's set between the 5th and 9th of October.

It seems that US customers will receive their cards closer to October 5th, via an express delivery mechanism, while customers in other parts of the world (example, as per the source, in Germany) will receive them within the 5th-9th timeframe, which could be mirrored in other markets.

Online retailers seem to have no indication as to when exactly will the RTX 2080 Ti be made available, with no set delivery/stock dates having been confirmed until now. What exactly is causing the delay is unknown at this point."

There are games that are doing much worse than 1x scaling currently on NVlink, which looks like a bug - you shouldn't see less performance on 2 GPU' vs 1 GPU, but a few of the games are showing less than 1x scaling in the above article.

The earlier SLI/NVlink videos I posted show better performance:

Some people were able to pick up the 2080ti at retail today, here's a couple of "mining" guys, fortunately they are getting low performance output - check the youtube comments - it's not a stand out performer like the AMD RX / Vega GPU's - darn it miners leave those AMD GPU's alone!!

Negative scaling has always been a possibility with SLI...I was hope NVlink would solve that, however NVlink is just utilizing the existing SLI apk for current games.

That DLSS video was very good from Hardware Unboxed - I watched all of it. It was interesting that "1800p TAA upscaled to 4K" vs "4K DLSS" performed the same while offering the same visual quality - this goes towards discounting the value of DLSS as a significant feature of Turing (because the same result can effectively be achieved on Pascal - the "1800p TAA upscaled to 4K" one), albeit there are only two DLSS benchmarks available at the moment, and he was only able to test that set of settings on one of them (Infiltrator Demo). There still remains the other type of DLSS that wasn't tested, can't remember what it's called, the one where it doesn't render at lower res but instead just removes the jaggies while rendering at native resolution - that mode isn't supported in anything yet I think they said; this is the DLSS mode that I'm interested in, that I think will be valuable.

I've made a few DLSS posts, but this one reviews it best so far. Given we still don't have a single active game running DLSS, there isn't much more to explore right now.

The DLSS 2x mode, pure native render + anti-aliasing would work the same with similar anomalies to the upscaling DLSS, except it would be working with better source material - rendering at the displayed resolution.

The DLSS AI sample set is rendered @ 8k, that's where the advantage comes in at both modes. But, I'm pretty sure the rule set is made for each displayed resolution, even if the source material used is 8k. You'd need rule set's for each 2160p, 1440p, 1080p target.

I've looked around and so far except for Nvidia's docs there are no examples of the native render + AA DLSS 2x. It's possible that native render + AA DLSS 2x would be best at 1080p / 1440p, given the overhead added, rather than at 4k native - with DLSS 2x you'll have lower resulting FPS at each resolution just like any AA mode.

Until Nvidia releases the driver updates and DLSS data set(s) for each supported game - IDK if that data will include support for DLSS / DLSS 2x @ 1080p / 1440p as well as 2160p in the beginning.

Nvidia's docs reads like DLSS 2x will be a different data set at each resolution and altogether different from standard DLSS:

"In addition to the DLSS capability described above, which is the standard DLSS mode, we provide a second mode, called DLSS 2X. In this case, DLSS input is rendered at the final target resolution and then combined by a larger DLSS network to produce an output image that approaches the level of the 64x super sample rendering – a result that would be impossible to achieve in real time by any traditional means. Figure 21 shows DLSS 2X mode in operation, providing image quality very close to the reference 64x super-sampled image."

Yep, that's the one that I think could be valuable (DLSS 2x), I'd forgotton it's name. If there's a big performance hit from that feature though I don't think it's worth it - I was initially under the understanding that this feature would provide complete removal of jaggies at zero fps cost, but after watching that video & reading your post I have the impression that this feature will not be free in terms of fps. I was previously under the impression that DLSS 2x would be running entirely on the tensor cores & would not 'interrupt' the normal rendering of the game by the GPU core in any way, thereby resulting in zero fps loss, but it seems that this feature will result in some kind of fps drop.

Updated: GeForce cards mysteriously begin playing nice with TR's FreeSync monitors

    https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/9k3x3w/nvidia_cards_suddenly_working_with_freesync_after/

"Update 9/30/18 3:22 AM: After further research and the collection of more high-speed camera footage from our G-Sync displays, I believe the tear-free gameplay we're experiencing on our FreeSync displays in combination with GeForces is a consequence of Windows 10's Desktop Window Manager adding some form of Vsync to the proceedings when games are in borderless windowed mode, rather than any form of VESA Adapative-Sync being engaged with our GeForce cards. Pending a response from Nvidia as to just what we're experiencing, I'd warn against drawing any conclusions from our observations at this time and sincerely apologize for any misleading conclusions we've presented in our original article. The original piece continues below for posterity."

"Here’s the “TLDR” of the tariffs: Nearly every computer component is affected in North America, and those prices can reach outward to other regions as companies try to stabilize for a downtrend in overall revenue. The tariffs were pushed into law by the US Federal Government, with the first 10% taking effect on October 1st of 2018. After this, an additional 15% tariff will be mandated by the US government on January 1st of 2019."

Why did Nvidia rush out the RTX GPU's?

There are no games at launch that support DLSS or Ray-Tracing, and there won't be any for months after the RTX GPU release.

Here's a bit of wild speculation trying to answer this question.

It's a bit of a slow but interesting wind-up to the wild speculation, you can probably jump ahead to 07:45...or even 09:00, jump back to the beginning if it's not making sense.

I'm not sure I agree with it, but it is interesting...

The content of that video is him speaking of his frustration as an Nvidia RTX product reviewer and an Nvidia RTX product owner, expressing that he is peeved (pissed-off) that Nvidia have wasted our time releasing a product that has absolutely no game support for it's RTX features.

He said he feels ripped off by Nvidia because of this situation, and that he feels he and others have been scammed out of their money.

He said it makes no sense to him for Nvidia to have spent 10 years working on ray-tracing, spending 10 Billion dollars, and this RTX-useless product release is the result.

He described in the video how he went through DLSS RTX demos and he couldn't get DLSS RTX to work, and none of the newly released games have support for DLSS RTX features.

He said that he (and others) spent $800 on an RTX 2080 GPU, and other's spent $1200 on their RTX 2080ti GPU, and he feels he and everyone else has been scammed out of their money by Nvidia by not delivering RTX features at launch.

He's pissed off enough about it all to make a Live Stream to get it off of his chest and share how he feel's about Nvidia's RTX scam / rip-off release with his viewers.

That video is a clear expression of the root cause for everything wrong with this Nvidia RTX GPU release, and more people need to be standing up like he has and express their anger and disappointment about the latest Nvidia scam / rip-off.

How does that work with a purchase from Nvidia for an FE GPU? What is the return period? Is there a restocking fee? Do you or they pay return shipping?

As far as reviews I've seen even though the MSI is "faster" what I have been hearing most is that with the power lockdown and no modding there really isn't much performance difference between the FE and AIB GPU's this generation - even with better cooling.

But, maybe I missed a review (why aren't people posting reviews?) showing a better result in performance differences, do you have a link to print or video reviews that show a difference?

I did see the performance improvement from improving cooling on ice, air-conditioner, nitrogen - the Jayztwocents OC'ing contesting, but I assume none of those are your daily driver situation?

What about waiting for the Kingpin edition from EVGA? Those usually have a greater delta in performance potential. :)

Nvidia offers a 30-day money back guarantee for all products...

I don't know how the shipping is cross charged, wouldn't be more than $15 to ship back regardless.

Agree on the power lock down...

Performance gains really boiled down to better temperature control resulting in more constant clock speeds. A few FPS at best.

If I had to buy an Nvidia GPU this generation, I would also want to get an AIB GPU - rather than dealing directly with the "Gates of Hell" @ Nvidia... but even the Devil deserves reciprocal treatment - fair compensation for services rendered - give the "Devil his due", so to speak.

We've been *****ing at Nvidia forever to give value for their FE cards through upgrading the cooling with better build quality, and Nvidia finally did that - with a rather sophisticated yet beautiful machined look.

Even if Nvidia jumped card classification performance tiers: 2080 => 2080ti, 2070 => 2080, no NVLINK / SLI on 2070, no 2060 - which used to be the no-SLI demarcation point telling us the 2070 should really be a 2060, and then Nvidia tacked on another $500++ more to the 2080ti (2080) to pay for it.

I'd probably keep the FE card if it works well, and doesn't burst into flames during the 30 days... ;)

Here's an MSI 2080ti modding video...even though the video thumbnail image shows an FE card...

Yeah...I'm in mo rush to open it.

I'll be out of State on business for most of October and November so all my gaming will be via 1080P on my Zephyrus M's 1070.

I do rather like the looks of the Founder's Edition this year though, and I think Nvidia did a great job on this RTX design even if the price is horrid!

Well, I guess that decides it then, you'll want to return that FE card before you head out...if you can't verify the card works before you leave it's not a good idea to let the 30 day return period expire before opening it and verifying it works.

Many times I've helped guys that return from their trip to unbox a new laptop that they now can't return due to the initial return period expiring, and it's got a problem. Now they have to fix it themselves or go through RMA delay's.

I'd recommend checking it out before you go, or send it back unopened.

Really though, if you have an unopened 2080ti arrive before heading out on a trip, and you don't rip it open and plug it in the minute it arrives, are you really a gamer? o_O

Wait, you didn't cancel your trip when you got the 2080ti shipping notice?? ;)

Oh...I wish I could cancel it!

I'll be back every weekend, so if I decide to keep it I'll have time to verify it works before the return period expires.

The MSI card is great, but after I heard they are locked down and be cross flashed it went off the short list real fast. I'm keeping my Asus Dual OC which can be cross flashed with any vBIOS so far, including the 380w vBIOS. Eventually were going to see that 400w vBIOS surface like the XOC vBIOS did. Once these cards are placed under water or have adequate cooling they all perform roughly the same less the silicon lottery. With that said I would 100% send back the FE card as there also locked down, but locked down with the lowest stock power limit. I'm sure a hardware programmer could bypass but hasn't' been tested to my knowledge.

Exclusive: NVIDIA RTX Mobility Graphics Cards Lineup Leaked Wccftech.com

And Nvidia continue put it it's warm hands on the crippled version of Mobile graphics (Max-Q design).

So we have just received details confirming that NVIDIA will be rolling out its RTX mobility lineup soon. The last time we heard from our source, they confirmed the existence of the RTX 2080 Max-Q mobility part and the likelihood that it will be the first part to launch (more on this later). Now, however, we have what appears to be the complete parts list for the RTX series.

The lineup will be as follows:

    • NVIDIA RTX 2070 Mobility
    • NVIDIA RTX 2070 MAX-Q Mobility
    • NVIDIA RTX 2060 Ti Mobility
    • NVIDIA RTX 2060 Mobility
    • NVIDIA RTX 2050 Ti Mobility
    • NVIDIA RTX 2050 Mobility
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q mobile design might have been pushed to Q1’19
Historically, NVIDIA has moved on to using desktop dies in laptops – which makes it very hard to predict what they will launch – but we are pretty sure about this one since its the only GPU that has the suffix “M” in its machine ID.

I also received the following quote from a random bird that wandered in from the open window:

We will put the 2080-Max Q into the current thin 15 and the 17 with nVidia’s help. It’s still unclear on when the 2070 will be out. I don’t think the weight will increase significantly on this new card. Our ID/design will be pretty much the same as what you saw.”

This is great news for gamers who want something more portable than a tower because NVIDIA’s Max-Q designs are the closest you can ever get to desktop-grade performance in a laptop:rolleyes::rolleyes: Heat and cooling are usually quite innovative for these laptops and clocks are lower than their desktop counterparts. TDP is usually the next big concern but considering 12 NFF is an improved version of 16nm FinFET this is something that we should have quite a bit of leeway with (Low clocks + 12 NFF = decent TDP).

That's a weird lineup of cards, in as much as it looks like they'll all include ray tracing ability given the RTX moniker. The weird thing being that the desktop cards only include the RTX moniker for 2070 upwards, and probably won't for the lower end cards (did they say this or was this a rumour?). So, it's strange that weak cards like 2050 & 2060 contain ray tracing where such desktop cards will not. Although, if BF5 is only targetting 1080p 60fps when running ray tracing then you probably don't need a beefy GPU core to target 1080p 60fps - as long as you've got a decent ray tracing core to keep up with 1080p 60fps from a ray tracing perspective then it's quite possible that these low end cards have enough traditional GPU rendering muscle to push to 1080p 60fps alongside the seperate work that the ray tracing core is doing.

Not so trustworthy from what I can see. And the lack of mentioning the full-fledged 2080 smells of rotten eggs. If not Nvidia will push it out together with 2080 Max-Crippled early 2019. Take it as rumors.

Unless a 2080 is too much power for a laptop, and they're gonna keep power & specs of desktop cards in notebook same-named examples, e.g. notebook 2070 just as fast as desktop 2070. But yeah, rumours, seems like there's some inconsistencies.

The only thing that you don't get with a 1080 is accelerated ray tracing, but consider that

    1. It's hardly going to get any use, for at least a few years and
    2. By the time it's being used frequently, newer cards will be doing ray tracing MUCH better than Turing

There is literally no reason to buy BETA technology as expensive as this other than to say you have it.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 3DMark Timespy Performance Benchmark Leaks Out – Slightly Faster Than GeForce GTX 1080 Wccftech.com

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 3DMark Timespy Benchmark Leaks Out – Slightly Faster Than GTX 1080 Custom Models
The benchmark results posted by the source aren’t very clear since it only displays the overall score and not the individual graphics score. The system was configured with a Core i7-8700K and ZOTAC GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card with a reported clock speed of 1950 MHz (Boost clocks). The score was 8151 points for the entire system and as I mentioned, there are no individual scores provided since the benchmark is hidden.

The interesting part is that the GeForce GTX 1080 with the same CPU scores around 7500 points in 3DMark Timespy. The Core i7-8700K used here is clocked at 3.70 GHz which is the base clock of the CPU so it wasn’t overclocked and not affecting in a higher overall benchmark score. The GeForce RTX 2070 used is supposed to be a factory overclocked model so the performance can be expected to be slightly better on the new card compared to the Pascal-based GeForce GTX 1080.

    "...
With this numbers, I can confirm that most (if not all) the performance I lost on the previous driver test was not because the new nVidia drivers, and not because the Windows 10 v1809 October update itself, but due to the Spectre microcode patch (which was installed in my machine along the v1809 October update). Some people already got it installed in the past as a standalone KB4100347 update, so they won't probably notice any difference after Win10 v1809 October update.

As I replied to a poster below, note that the Meltdown and Spectre patches do not have any direct effect on your GPU nor your graphics horsepower, only over your Intel main processor. You won't see any difference in performance unless your gaming is somewhat CPU bottlenecked (as was my case with the mid range i5-4590 4th gen processor with a pretty powerful 1070Ti GPU under DX11 games). If your system is mostly GPU constrained (low-mid end GPU or a high end main processor), the Spectre microcode patch shouldn't affect your gaming performance."

Am I right in thinking that Spectre microcode updates are actually included within v1809 itself, or does the upgrade to v1809 just automatically include the KB4100347 as part of the update?

Seems the microcode patch is integrated in the October 2018 Update - But you can still use InSpectre tool. I testing 1809 and have still the old 84 who is implemented in mod bios.

But latest Cpu's wont slow down games with the patch installed.

You might need to be careful about what HWInfo is telling you about the microcode version. I've seen HWInfo reporting the wrong microcode before - on my laptop when I reverted to an older microcode it was still showing the newer one in HWInfo. I don't think HWInfo is particularly reliable in showing the right microcode. Thing is, what other software or where else can we look to confirm actual microcode being used? We can look in BIOS of course, but then this can be superceded by microcodes implemented by the OS, anyone know where else apart from HWINfo we can look to see microcode version actually in use?

That's good that we can still use InSpectre if necessary to remove the now 'forced' Spectre protection to regain the performance. I don't bother doing that anymore though, I just run my games with all Spectre protections in place, I do get a few fps less on some maps in BF1 though - e.g. Amiens map which is CPU limited when hitting 130fps+

I don’t think Win Crap install microcode patch if it can see what’s implemented in firmware. The patch (search also up my posts regarding microcode mess in the forum) include same version as bios. And I have zero decrease in CBR-15 scores vs. 1803 which I used without the patch.

Not sure if Aida64 can show microcode.

I've just been googling for last 5 mins to work out how else to see microcode in use, I think you can see the version in use by using regedit. This is mine, C6 is the version of microcode I'm using (implemented through BIOS in my case):
    microcode version.jpg

EDIT: in above pic I think "Previous Update Revision" is the code that is implemented from BIOS, and "Update Revision" is the code implemented through the OS. On mine both codes are the same, because I'm using a BIOS which already has the latest Spectre microcode included.

MSI GeForce RTX 2070 GAMING Z Performance Review
Sunday , October 14, 2018, Brent Justice, Kyle Bennett
    https://www.hardocp.com/article/2018/10/14/msi_geforce_rtx_2070_gaming_z_performance_review/1

    " Introduction
HardOCP has an exclusive for you today. Since we have not signed NVIDIA's recent NDA, we are not being sourced RTX review cards by NVIDIA or its AIBs...
    The Bottom Line
...The MSI RTX 2070 GAMING Z is faster than our MSI GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING X, but that 1080 is actually less expensive at $509.99 after $20 rebate.
The big question is a $100 premium worth the performance. If you are playing at 4K, then absolutely yes, go for it. At 1440p though the money savings on a highly overclocked GeForce GTX 1080 may be preferred. It just isn’t fast enough to warrant the price difference of $100 for a 10-20% performance difference.
You are better off saving some bucks and going with a highly overclocked GeForce GTX 1080 for 1440p right now....We would not consider a reference clocked GeForce RTX 2070 at all for gaming, we think the 2070 GPU needs the boost of a high factory overclock to make it worth the money
and certainly the MSI card serves this up in spades...."

"So it's faster than 1080, but costs 650$. At that price, might as well get a 1080ti, which is faster than this card..."

A somewhat more sensibly priced version of Turing here! Performance is less than 1080ti, so this years xx70 card is not faster than the previous gen x80ti, so it's not pulling the same trick as the GTX 1070. DLSS will be an interesting performance addition to that already respectable performance, while the ray tracing may lag behind due to being a more neutered RT core than the RTX 2080 & 2080ti. All-in-all, not too bad really for this card, RTX 2070.

Ha, HardOCP may be getting some flack from NVidia & other review sites for publishing this review ahead of schedule, even if they hadn't ever signed an NDA it's still putting noses out of joint from lots of angles!
