(in several days I will have one new msi 1070 for sale.. ;)
Nothing intentionally , just saying as the topic is around this, besides - hands down, msi is the best mxm 1070 out there. Zotac, the Chinese crap are jokes in comparison.

No, the VRMs are ok, as they are the same as on Quadro P5000.
The problem is the Chinese use rebranded/refurbished GPU sockets.
Poor soldering, leading to loose contacts when pcb under heavy heat...

Once again, not MXM, but cross-posting here:

I received a rather pleasant surprise today: my Quadro RTX 5000 DGFF2 had arrived, and I have installed it.

Before I dive in, let me start with a picture, comparing all three GPUs I've used so far. From left to right:
    • Quadro P3200 DGFF2 (Dell P/N XDVC6)
    • Quadro RTX 3000 DGFF2 (Dell P/N MWDWM)
    • Quadro RTX 5000 DGFF2 (Dell P/N 8CMTP).
This is intended to be a comparison primarily of the overall board layout, the GPU die size and port positioning. The P3200 and the RTX 3000 boards have a lot in common; nearly everything is in almost exactly the same position. VRAM count is the same, at 6 GB.

    Some other notes:
    1. I had to swap out the heatsink—details mentioned here in the last spoiler.
    2. The existing DGFF power cable was almost too short to fit into the RTX 5000's port, which has moved, as one can see in the photos. I just managed to plug it in, but it requires some finger gymnastics.
    3. The VRM set-up has increased for the RTX 5000. This makes it likely that it can support more power in, as it is currently set at 80 W.
    4. All three boards come with an aluminium EM shield (the latter two on both sides) to reduce anti-static discharge. This was removed to photograph the complete PCB configuration.
The RTX 5000 board is testament to the fact that a powerful GPU, and 16 GB of fast GDDR6 VRAM can be fit onto a board roughly equal to the area of MXM-A. Whether or not it actually happens is merely down to manufacturer willingness to do it. Dell did, and I have now upgraded the GPU in my notebook, twice.

This time, I actually performed some benchmarks to compare between the RTX 3000 and RTX 5000. Results are below.

TL;DR: the 80 W power limit completely neuters the potential performance of the RTX 5000. I tried flashing the 110W vBIOS posted by @myshko here, but I was greeted with a black screen on boot-up. Flipping the Switchable Graphics option in the BIOS made no difference.

All in all, an easy upgrade, but not particularly worth it.

Black screen with backlit on ? did you let it boot to windows (with drivers installed) ?
On my P4000 and M6700, if I put a wrong vbios (desktop P4000 or even P5000), it boot with a black screen (no backlit) but as soon as windows/drivers initialise the card, it work fine

Yep; backlight on. The thing is that the 110 W vBIOS works immediately upon bootup, and I can see the Windows loading circle, but it then goes to a black screen when Windows has loaded.

It works on safe mode, too.

it might be a drivers issue then ? If you DDU then install drivers with 110W bios, does it work ?

SHOULD be able to, but if you use the MSI 1070 will need to do some modifications.

Ive only seen a few screenshots from a chinese website that more or less paints the picture that it works. Havent been able to confirm it personally yet.

The ZM series is LVDS internal display only. A 1070 would not be able to drive your internal display.

    UPDATE:

Ignore the above. I was thinking of the SM series, just before the ZM.

Huh. Unless some revelation passed me by, the entire subforum for M17XR2 was claiming that nothing post GTX 680M single/SLI works without colour inversion or audio issues. That the Maxwell+ cards don't work on this machine. What is your full setup?

He is using a M17x R3 panel with a M15x display cable, not the factory rgbled display. That’s why he got it working on internal display. It will never work for rgbled 8 bit display. Give m4000m a try, maybe Quadro support 8 bit panel. You’ll know as soon as the alien head bios logo pops up

Absolutely, please do! This is one of the greatest news about the M17XR2 upgrades and possibilities, if it is possible to make it run with 1920x1200 RGB-LED and even 970M in SLI it's an incredible achievement! If you would be so kind to share your knowledge :)

A vBIOS problem for sure. I have 2 x 8970M which is easily 100W per card and I score p11000+ on my M17x R2. I do not overclock my CPU.

Yes but my point was it’s not power draw that is the problem, the VBIOS is making artificial throttle. 8970M does not throttle because vBIOS does not care. Maybe @Prema can help you with this.

if it's a regular eDP output you can put any screen you want, usually RGDLED need an adapter 40 pins ("eDP" cable) to 50 pins (screen), that's how it work on precision laptop, however there is also a "3D cable" which is a fully working out of the box eDP cable for 40pins eDP screen.
I think in your case the worst case scenario would be to rewire the eDP cable in order to be compatible with pinout of regular 40 pins eDP.

There is an eDP output on the M17X R2, you can't drive a billion color with "high resolution" display using LVDS only, look at the schematics :
    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showpost.php?p=861437&postcount=11
Some came with it soldered on the board and some other don't (I don't know more about this one), if it's not already soldered on the board you only need to solder some passive component and the connector, then it should works. Worst case scenerio would be that this screen is recognized as an external one or the LVDS output would be still active then the bios might not display on the eDP display at first.

Even the M15x R1 seems to have an eDP output by looking at the schematic preview here :
    http://laptop-schematics.com/view/8793/
(can't find a "free" schematic for this board)

So it's basically the same story as the quest for m15x with eDP?
