If you do it...and I hope you do...don't sell it. If you accomplish it you might well be able to make a bit of money helping others do it, through advice, description of the process, schematic, etc.
By the way, I think Ireland is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and wouldn't mind living there. I learned how to say "Close the door" in Gaelic on Inishmore, as I was surrounded by people determined only to speak that fabled tongue.
And everywhere I went, people had their own unique version of soda bread.Last edited: Mar 7, 2018 -

Yup that's very true. I am very suprised you didnt learn to say "Pog Mo Thon" as thats every visitors favourite saying haha. One of the best irish sayings to an english man is "Tiocfaidh ár lá" and they will not like that one haha
-
That phrase you mentioned sound to me a lot like GFYS. Just hazarding a guess. Probably a response to the Treaty of Limerick.
I learned to say (but not to write) duin an dòras, go raibh mile maith agaibh, and slàinte. You'd be surprised how often I can slip "close the door" into any conversation. -

Phew lets get back on track before we turn this technology forum political haha. So those big dragons huh.alexhawker likes this. -
Sure. Back to the Dragon, after I mention that I visited Glendalough in Wicklow, which is rather spooky.

Stayed in a nightmare guesthouse in Sandymount, as Dublin was all full up due to a Test Match. So based on one suggestion in a restaurant I took refuge in the haunted hotel in Glendalough.

As far as GPU, the wall that one hits is the MXM 2.1 type III/HE socket and card architecture that the W700 series shares with the Dragon. On the consumer side the top card in that standard is the Nvidia 280M GTX, while the professional version, its sibling, is the 3700M.
The W700s could come withe the Quadro 2700 or 3700M. The next generation, the W701, utilized the MXM 3 standard, which permitted the Quadro 3800M.
The limitation of the W700s is the 2.1 standard. There's no way to put an MXM 3 or above in an earlier architecture socket. -

If you havent seen the funny advert back in the day for the unit watch it. Seeing the side screen is still funny haha
-
I likeThinkpads, and am typing this on a venerable T60P, with its very nice Boe Hydis S-IPS UXGA screen. To me the display on any computer is a paramount feature.
The secondary display on the DS was pretty low quality, and meant more for placing tools away from the main action. It reminds me of the old IBM laptop with the expanding keyboard. I have the feeling many of these laptop designers watch a lot of cartoons.
Here's a size comparison of the main screen on the W700 with that on the Dragon...just for fun:

What does that mean exactly? That we veered off subject? I truly was not aware that we are not allowed to expatiate. I do contribute useful tech information in the main, as in the above post regarding specific MXM architecture.
It was my fault that we discussed Gaelic, not Mr. O Quinn's. Ireland happens to be somewhat of a passion for me.
So...sorry!

I'm not a mod nor did I report anything. I just thought it was sort of interesting and funny. But yes, very off topic. Threads do go off topic all the time here though.

I hadn't noticed anyone else going off topic.

So, back to GPUs! -

I sent 2 HP Dragon laptops to the 'guru' (one for spare parts) for the upgrade path to the 3700M just about 2 years ago now (I've yet to get them back). Though it would be technically satisfying to figure out the screen dimming issue, the best use of time and money at this point would be a motherboard upgrade. For myself that would need to include a mobile Nvidia 10xx gpu to be worthwhile. Also, with respect to the 4k panel, even if one could be found, you would also need to find a new screen bezel as removing it without breaking it, is for the most part impossible, and there are no bezels to be found anywhere (I ended up having one made in China from a mold and it was damn expensive). Perhaps senordingdong will think of something...

Really a motherboard upgrade is the best idea, and is doable. Of course, that leaves me with a rare, new Lenovo 3700M, all dressed up and nowhere to go!
I would think that a 3D printer could produce a bezel without any production costs, and with new plastics and resins could be made stronger than the original. The original lacks tensile strength.
A 4K screen really isn't necessary, even if people are in a race with each other to produce higher and higher resolution screens, and reach higher levels of eyestrain.
The point is that the Dragon is probably the most unique and elegant laptop ever made, and warrants a new life.Last edited: Mar 18, 2018ole!!! likes this. -

MSI GT72 6QD with 970m upgrade with Eurocom's eBay GT72 980m upgrade kit failed.
The supplied 980m X-Bracket screw hole diameter is too small for the MSI GT72 6QD heatsink's spring-loaded screws. -

-
The screws on the GT72 6QD's heatsink are long enough to reach through to the x-bracket.
The screws supplied with the 980m upgrade kit are about 6-7mm to short to reach the x-bracket
and the screw head nearly passes through the of the heatsink screw holes.
The product is advertised for GT72 and Eurocom's upgrade video for GT72 shows the same screws that I have;
that is not what I got in my uograde kit.
see the screws at 8 minutes.
They have replied saying I can remove the x-bracket from my 970M and use that.
That won't be happening if I am to sell the 970M.
The only solution that makes this Eurocom GT72 908M upgrade kit a success is that it works as advertised with a MSI GT72. -

Just use your X-bracket from the other card. They are stickered on, and come off once you get that very easily.
alternatively you can use the screws provided with the cards...ChanceJackson and sicily428 like this. -

Still more expensive then the ones I sell though for instance, so not to pat myself on the back, but why risk it, since there is no returns and no warranty or any kind or guarantee ?ChanceJackson likes this. -

I like the Aetna 1060, uses the old reference design without the need to mod heatsink. Fewer power phases than the gecube/eurocom card, but they use three bigger ones. The aetna 1060 is short one mosfet but also adds 3 extra power output capacitors vs the gecube/eurocom card. Should run fine as long as you don't go crazy with overvolting
