The Mighty Clevo P870DM-G "Phoenix" Gets an 8700K and GTX 1080 Upgrade

The x 9xxHQ series are always good overclockers and have the best efficiency, less heat on extreme overclocks. Also the multi-core ratio can be overclocked by x6 mutliplier from 3.7GHz to 4.3GHz on all cores which is a big difference in speed. Highest core clock was only 4.1GHz that gets a massive boost to 4.7GHz basically turning the 7920hq into a 7700k at stock.

The x 8xxHQ/x 8xxHK processors are also good overclockers but do not have the best efficiency hence most high overclocks lead to whea_uncorrectable_error due to either heat or voltage issues. Ive learnt its always best to the the '9' series cpu just because you can't go wrong with them and also becasue of countless experience with alienware/msi '8' series bga trash.

You can tell msi actually unlocked everything on the gt83vr because there is no type of throttling at all, no current/power/thermal throttling whatsoever. I have liquid metal on the cpu and it reaches 83c max on prime95. Maybe I got an insanely high binned chip or the cooling system is literally that much of a beast... Time will tell if the motherboard survives

 

They are made trash at FW level nothing can be done at all.

 

Thats literally why I buy the best cpu at the time because I know intel hasn't ****ed with it in anyway

Easy peasy work for the Yakuza. He can score1000 pts disabling spectre and meltdown along with applying latest MCU for MDS exploit prevention. Even real time priority may help in boosting the scores.

I now know the reason for my high overclocks, the core VID on my processor is low, I really did get a high binned chip lol.

@Papusan I got to 1007cb on a bclk overclock of 102.9mhz and the laptop crashed almost instantly.

Have you tried updating MEIFW and apply new uCode and see the difference?

I think its tied to Trophy points, I was able to give 5 reps after crossing 30 trophy and 1000 likes/posts.

 

Could be but @DaMafiaGamer + some others have a lot higher trophy points than this. + some have even a lot less than 1000 likes and still can give out 5 reps. Aka a lot less than 500 likes. Same also for the amount posts. Something doesn't look right.

Final scores are in, time to tdp mod that gtx 1070 to 170w-200w and up the gpu vcore (I need desktop 1080 performance can't stand the 1070 anymore lol) A beastly machine needs a beastly gpu to go with it. Fun fact: 2 GTX 1070's will receive error 43 in the gt83vr if you DO NOT have an sli cable attached. The more you know I guess...

Intel has to deliver something better than their entry chips 7700when they charge one arm and a leg for this awful expensive BGA chips.

Luckily I wasn’t charged that for just a cpu lol. Got the gt83vr barebones relatively cheap and brand new with no scratches etc. For me it’s just amazing value for the money. Performance and the speaker audio quality which is simply unbeatable.

Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be working bclk can only go up to a max of 102.9mhz. I tried @Vasudev microcode fix which leads to revision 84. And your fix which leads to microcode rev AE. Still nothing cuts off exactly at 102.9Mhz

 

Last post on my GT83VR, just to prove to you people that x 8xxHQ & HK are trash BGA chips, here is a comparison:



As you can see the 7820hk is clocked HIGHER than my 7920hq and is still getting worse quad-core and multi-core results, this proves that intel's 'hk' chips are just an overclocking gimmick...

 

...or maybe you just know how to tweak and cool a cpu much better than most others posting their scores thats actually a big factor and shouldnt be underestimated but true, with such large sample sizes, trends can definitely be extrapolated...

When they released or.. maybe leaked CA for Skylake 6700HQ.. it was surely a mistake because after couple of days.. Intel released CC uCode and it disabled this BCLK pass over 102.9Mhz BCLK so.. it was unintended mistake.. I don't know for other CPU's but.. it was very nice error from Intel

One thing I must say is once you get the p870xx series you will hate the p77xx series. It's inferior in everyway, cooling, sound and just looks. The p77xx series looks so ugly!

 

If benching was my starting point I probably would've, but alas keyboard layout and user experience (which is subjective) kept me in the dell stratosphere.

That being said I'll stay my lane in the benching world lol, I have other interesting things to pursue with my ranger.

IMO no clevo holds a candle to how well the 17 R1 feels and looks, but performance/cooling wise is a whole 'nother story. You certainly don't see any AW 17 R1's cracking 1K, let alone 2k!

It`s tragic how they are artificially EOL`ing these machines instead of making their upgradability a main selling point (marketing).

It's not like Intel gave ODMs a choice...

A handful of user running a few quick benches is a whole different story than making it a mainstream option covered under warranty. There is a lot of responsibility involved.
What to tell a customer, that bought hardware from your company in full faith, when his system shuts down even on stock clocks, that using security patches will brick the system or that he needs to tape a bunch of CPU PINs on his new CPU or it'll short the entire board?

I have both. And I like the Clevo P870 better. In all ways + @Prema firmware on top is a Big +.

Azor and Alienware started screw up the AW models from the start of 17 R1 models. The history from this point ain't nice! A disgusting ride.

And even when they do have a choice, they still choose to screw over their most hardcore consumer base - Maxwell to Pascal and now Pascal to Turing designs.
Don`t get me wrong, I understand their reasons, it`s simply something I would choose differently.

 

Clevo is the only ODM that hasn't changed their GPU design since they made their own after the end of MXM-b in 2015, with the 980 being the only odd-ball, stuck in the middle between two generations, and the original P870DM. (In this model we need to solder an extra wire for Pascal/Turing support).

Clevo style MXM 10x0 and 20x0 series are all compatible with DM2/3, KM1 and TMx (2016+ model) generation. We can even still run good old MXM-b in those models:

But yeah, MSI (one of the other last MXM supporter), with a few exceptions, pretty much screwed their user each generation...
And until now Dells DGFF isn't even compatible between different models, but at least with the A51M they are aiming to change that for the Turing-refresh...

 

...but only with modded BIOS and/or vBIOS. That`s no Clevo work.
Even a simple 1080 swap from TM to KM doesn`t work as plug`in play because of reasons (unintentionally for sure...) and needs a right vBIOS flash. Don`t have a second machine to make a flash - black screen welcome to. Not to mention SLI problems. Other than that, GTX cooling needs some hard DIY modifications to fit for RTX just because they DID change the desing - once again.
So sadly it isn`t unified hardware and software wise so that it can`t be easly carried between models (GTX->RTX and vice versa). But if you do that`s no Clevos work, you are on your own (just to find a dremel after vBIOS flash...).
I`m just drunk, I`m going home already (means I will stick to my DM and KM1 for a log time ).

 

Nope, just update to the latest STOCK vBIOS and a Clevo 1060, 1070 & 1080 works in all models. There has never been a need for any vBIOS Mod to do a simple GPU swap or upgrade.
I have personally used the same stock Clevo 1060 & 1080 vBIOS in a DM3, KM1 and TM1 board and it's been Plug'n'Play that way for all of them with each systems STOCK BIOS.
Same for SLI. No problems with STOCK vBIOS and STOCK BIOS.

 

I tried the p157sm-a and the keyboard layout was unusable. It sat on the floor for a month while I kept using my m4600. Hardware and chassis is better for sure but I'm not a benchmark enthusiast, just a lame power user who likes to game and tinker.

Is the ranger inferior bencher? Of course, but there is still plenty of room to tinker. I consider it to be a good machine for modding, plenty of parts because its a dell and for a cheap price. It's more the machine for the everyman unlike the the p870 which is more like Conan the barbarian.

 

And the new rtx cards work on every laptop too probably including the original p870dm. Just needs a certain earlier vbios

 

Why would an older vBIOS help? No, it has to be the latest stock version (from 2017) for a single GTX card to work across all models (incl. SLI).

Until now there is only one Clevo RTX vBIOS revision (one for each of the 3 card models 60/70/80, plus one for each g-sync version) and they are working fine on DM3, KM1 and TM1 models given the right BIOS is used:

What is this newest stock vBIOS version numbering? Can you share it? I would happily upgrade my 1080 if it`s GSync compatible.
