i'm just wondering how close it is to being good to use as a daily driver BIOS.

BIOS part is all finished, the EC Mod and cooling is a WIP...

Does that require any hardware changes or it's all firmware?

As @Prema mentioned, still working on a couple of things. But, it is a daily driver already. I am on a business trip and have my Alien-killing Machete with me all week. It makes my business class Dell Latitude employer-provided laptop (thin and light BGA turdbook) seem like a child's toy/smartphone (plastic MacBook semi-clone filth).

Does the 8700K processor also work on the P870DM3? I hope it works. it excites me very much.

The EC would just need code changes.

The cooling is a reference to how the 6 core CPU uses more power and the DM/DM3/KM were designed for 91W CPUs (6700K/7700K). Those CPUs just about never hit their base power limit at stock, and had no all-core turbo multiplier to soak up additional power headroom. You had to overclock (e.g. past 4.5 on both my 6700Ks) or run an artificial workload (prime95 FMA, IBT etc) to get ~90W consumption.

Chuck in a 8700K, which the TDP spec says will use 95W at 3.7GHz, and then will add its 'up to' +600MHz all core turbo to soak up more, up to the +25% (~120W) turbo power headroom as soon as you throw a 100% load at it, things will quickly get toasty on those stock older heatsinks

    1) "EC Mod" (firmware)
    and
    2) "Cooling" (for hungrier CPU)

not "mod AND cooling for EC"

Yep. Just looking at the TM CPU heatsink, it has 4 pipes and the small 2nd grill (although without fan). But also, they are located under the main heatsink plate with only a thin shim for IHS contact, unlike prior P870 CPU HS where the heatpipes are on top of the main plate

Also the whole fan shroud is copper

This is an alternative kind of pipe ...

well, the 4th pipe isn't even going to the main grill/fan anyway so a small pipe and grill might work? will probably need to mod a bit of the frame to fit but that's something i can handle maybe. LOL

Would be interested in seeing how @Mr. Fox does his CPU heatsink.

Is the fan shroud soldered to the radiator? If not a copper shroud is pointless.

    Go full @Coolane?

I'm sure there's enough clearance to add another layer of pipes and have it sit above the grill like on the 980DT heatsink.

I read this topic from beginning to end.
Is the 8700K on the P870DM3 currently stable?
I could not find how to do it. Will anyone be able to run 8700k on the Z170? This is the perfect thing.

@Prema I guess this is not the place. With the PremaMod, can we install the Quadro driver on the GTX graphics card? I installed the Quadro K5000m driver on the GTX780m. (MSI GT70). The core of the GTX780m and the Quadro K5000m were the same.
    Thank you.

Yes, it is totally stable. Still needs some firmware and hardware tweaking to be great at overclocking, but it has no hiccups in terms of stability. The "how to" for the 8700K upgrade on Z170/Z270 is not published. It requires firmware and hardware mods. It is not a simple upgrade by any measurement. This is mainly a POC demonstration to show what great things are possible when literally every business decision made by manufacturers is not guided by greed and an abnormal obsession with control. The only reason it is not easy to install an 8700K and GTX 1080 is because it was designed to be so difficult that buying a new laptop is going to be the only option for 99.9% of end users.

(When complete) will 8700K install details be available for those of us willing to do it on a "caveat moddor" basis? Via PM or something if not public on premamod.com?

Also, when you mention 138C solder in the OP to build the GTX1080 heatsink I assume you are referring to Sn42Bi58 paste?

Wow I'm totally envious, I would have done mine this way, if I had access to a high end metalworking CNC to play with and time and a clue how to use it. I seriously hope Clevo consult this guy about making this an option for their next kick bottom top end unit because it looks quality (despite non-flattened heat pipes and fan gaps, that's probably a prototype)

Though I hope the block is able to be disassembled for cleaning, the CNC routing ridges and square edge pockets would have it gunk up badly inside with the wrong coolant or a lack of maintenance, and I hope there's cutouts for the z-height of GPU board components especially inductors. And of course completely leak proof is critically important.

FYI 2000rmb / AUD$400 is not that much more expensive that a new pair of OEM heatsinks (CPU + dual GPU vapour chamber) for the P870DM3

I would love to see others try it, but I cannot say what will be available that is not my liberty to share. Whether or not the firmware is available will be up to @Prema. As far as the power mods for the CPU, it would be up to @Khenglish whether or not he wants to share that publicly. The CPU pin-out mod may need to be shared privately to avoid the wrath of Intel.

Yes, that is the stuff. :) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0195V1QEI

Making some progress. Cooling is definitely the Achilles' Heel. A 6700K heat sink is NOT designed to manage 160W. Will see how the IC Graphite pads handle it when I get home from my business trip. (I have Phobya NanoGrease Extreme on the CPU right now.) In spite of all that, this is a truly massive performance increase over 7700K, even at a wimpy baby girl 47x6 overclock.

since i cant send u a pm, let me ask here:

could you give at least a hint as to the scope of the hardware changes necessary for the 8700K DM mod? are we talking soldering on the mobo or maybe shorting pins in the cpu socket?

just trying to get an idea of how likely it would be for me to achieve something like this.

also, are the hardware mods necessary for the 8700k to function at all? (stock speeds, all cores and HT active, stable, etc) or are they just necessary to unlock proper overclocking potential? (tdp wattages, amps, voltages)

any input would be much appreciated :) again, no details necessary, just an idea of what difficulty level wed be looking at here. (u can also send a pm if u prefer)

    cheers!

It always does. Best I just buy a whole new system instead of modding an aging platform.. As reliable as a the DM-G is.

yeah it is indeed not an easy decision to make. i for one am most likely going to stick to my DM1. true, its an aging platform, but its got both prema sbios and vbios and the more i mod it the more i make it "my own", unique and thus more worthy of love, affection and loyalty ;)

besides, i owe it to @Prema to make the most out of it after all the work hes already put into it! :D

its still got a lot of upgrade options left:

    960 pro 1tb m.2 nvme
    4x8 gb ddr4-4000
    8700k
    1070/P5000/P5200
    intel 9260/killer 1550 wifi

now if there were only a QHD 120 Hz display in 15.6 inch format...that would be perfect ;)

Prema got my 1440p panel working a treat so I can't complain.
