Your CPU is better than mine. No kind of limits by firmware. Uncheck Clock Modulation. Enable Speedstep, SpeedShift and Turbo. I'll provide my entire TS settings along with executable. Be careful, don't overwrite your current TS_obsidian folder but copy it to another drive or partition and look at my settings and tweak your current TS setup that suits you. I'll upload it in a moment.
EDIT:
Save your work before continuing.
Check out Options in TS in my settings and see/check/click and verify each option and revert back if it causes issues.

I am still alive. Just on a summer holiday from the forums and working on some other projects. I will be back. Your new found ability to get the CPU to report lower power consumption sounds exciting. I look forward to adding that to TS someday.
EDP Other stands for Electrical Design Point which often times means that you are hitting the current limit. You can try adjusting the PP0 Current Limit higher in ThrottleStop but I think for your CPU model, ThrottleStop does not give you any access to the current limit setting. If I had the full Intel documentation, I might be able to help. Without documentation, there is nothing I can do.
You can try to access the current limit in Intel XTU. It is possible that your laptop manufacturer set this limit way too low which deliberately forces your CPU to throttle when it really shouldn't be doing that. EDP Other should not be lighting up in red during normal use. There might not be much you can do about this to truly solve this problem. You should not have to disable turbo boost to try and work around this problem. Turbo boost is a feature of the CPU that you paid for. If I brought a laptop home with an EDP problem, it would be going back for a full refund the same day.Last edited: Jul 27, 20176.|THE|1|BOSS|.9, Takeishi, FrozenLord and 1 other person like this. -
SAve your work before doing this. Simply close current TS, and then run the TS which I gave you, go through every options FIVR, TPL, Options, etc.. I have 2 main profiles one is Performance and Battery. Try it and let me know the results.
-
It seems performance profile is better than Battery. mentioned in my previous posts, it definately seems the power cable, when connected to the laptop, makes drops FPS and creates more lag. When disconnected and running on battery, the lag, is reduced and sometimes even completely gone.
When I disconnect the power cable from the laptop, the performance profile automatically deselects itself.
However, with the performance profile, I am now getting BD PROCHOT limit reasons in addition to EDP Other for both core and Gpu. My temperatures I fine I think.
Its strange as sometimes warhammer runs as smooth as can be - even with limit reasons.
But then other times, the limit reasons have a serious impact on gameplay
I have some thermal paste so I think I will reapply some, just to see if it makes any difference.Vasudev likes this. -
Do you mean you need more information on this particular CPU? (6700)
I think so too, it is probably the last time I buy from Gigabyte. It is a shame because I have never really had any other problems apart from this.
do you know of any other manufacturers who do not limit throttle settings as much as Gigabyte? Just for future reference if I decide to buy a gaming desktop. -
Battery mode simply extends battery life so its undervolt settings are aggressive and tuned for max power savings.
During repaste, check your DC cable for any burns? If its burnt you might have to replace the cable. -
I think you may want to entertain the possibility that there is something wrong with your laptop, rather than that this is a norm. My P35, with the same processor, does not show any of the limiting problems you are seeing. Under stress (all cores, like TSBench) all cores come up to 31x, and there is no throttling. In fact, I never had throttling even before undervolting CPU and CPU cache by .145 v. You might talk with your dealer, or with Gigabyte. Best, Joe
-
Hi Joe. thank you for the input; interesting to know you have the same cpu and have had no throttling problems. I will contact Gigabyte and see If I can confirm with them regarding throttling limitations . -

I confirm this too.. the more you undervolt cache voltage the lower temprature you have
Vasudev and leftsenseless like this. -
So, I have been using ThrottleStop for a while and it is really helpful. I use a Lenovo y50-70 laptop and I had major issues with the tempretures while playing games. The game I am currently playing usually makes the laptop go to like 96-98 degrees, but that depends on a bit if it is hot in the room. My CPU is i7-4720HQ and my GPU is Nvidia GTX 960m.
I have undervolted my CPU Core and CPU Cache with -37.1. that does help quite a lot but it still isnt enough. I have also undervolted my GPU with - 75mV from another program. The laptop is relatively working but the temps still go really high. Does anyone have any suggestions to lower the temps somehow? Changing the CPU core offset voltage isntantly lights up the "edp current" for Core and Ring.
Another thing I was wondering is that in "Limit reasons", everytime I unhibernate my laptop a lot of things light up. For example, "edp current", "pl1", pl2". Can you please tell me what these mean? I searched a lot on the internet but I cant seem to find what they mean or why they are appearing. I also constantly get GPU power while using the laptop in Firefox.Last edited: Aug 7, 2017Vasudev likes this. -
You can lift the back of the laptop by using two even sized bottle caps or even invest in laptop stands to reduce the temps by 10C. Are you on latest BIOS? I think your CPU can be undervolted to -100mV on cpu, cache and analog IO. If that doesn't help, repaste your laptop.
-
Lifting the laptop and lowering the temprature of the room does help a lot. I have a laptop stand with 4 fans but it doesn't seem to do much.
I am not sure about the BIOS, I think mine is unlocked. I undervolted it throught ThrottleStop to -40 and after playing for like an hour on a somewhat heavy game the laptop just turned off. It did it twice so assumed it was unstable. Are you sure I can undervolt it to -100mV?
I did repaste it and I don't see a difference in the temprature -
Which paste did you use? Use the spread method instead of big blob.
-
leftsenseless Notebook Evangelist
The amount of undervolt that will be stable depends on your thermals. If you can manage to keep the laptop cooler, you'll be able to undervolt more which will help cool your laptop more. It's counter intuitive that way.

I used Cooler Master HTK-002-U1 and I just put it like a blob.
What should I spread it with and should I repaste it again in that case?
Well, while I play depending on the CPU multiplier that I use it will stay between 87 and 98. I usually use a 16-18 multiplier. With 18 it easily gets and stays at like 98-99 but because of the throttling it goes to 8 multipler and cools off but when the throttling stops it starts all over again.
I can never reach the mulipler of 26 which was the multipler that the laptop came with. I cant test it now I will test the unervolting with -60 and see how it goes. -
Look for Cooler Master Maker Gel Nano or else take a look at this thread and decide which paste is available locally that fits your budget. http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...nd-apply-traditional-and-liquid-metal.806840/
-
I just ran Prime95 (SmallFFT) with -75 offset voltage on the CPU core, CPU cache and Analog I/O. Prime95 ran for 17 minutes and then the laptop just turned off. I am not using a cooling stand and the room I am in is 30 degrees.
I will probably buy a better paste and apply it.
Edit: Also does undervolting the GPU actually help the temperatures? I have a GTX 960m and it at undervolting with -75mV from NvidiaInspector but
1. I am not sure it even undervolts it.
2. I dont really see a difference in the temperatures. It might be because of the CPU, which raises the GPU temp as well.Last edited: Aug 7, 2017 -
Prime95 isn't good because it pulls more current and destroys the chip eventually after excessive use. So use OCCT or AIDA64 Stability test instead of p95.
You need @Prema's vBIOS for undervolting the GPU, otherwise the sliders will work temporarily and switch back to stock clocks after sometime.
I think you room temps is the cause. -
My BIOS is unlocked with insydeh2o, but in the settings I didn't find absolutely anything about unervolting the GPU.
I will stess test it again in a cooler room and with AIDA64. -
You undervolt in BIOS?
-
I thought it was from the normal BIOS. Thats why I got someone to unlock it for me with Insydeh2o, but I couldn't find it there. I guess its not the same bios...
-
Check advanced Tab under that CPU/chipset config.
-
I don't see anything related to GPU under chipset configuration.
I have overclocking performance tab. Under it i have:
Processor, CLR, SVID/FIVR, GT, Uncore-IOA-IOD and Memory. -

The gpu is usually controlled from OS controlled program like EVGA, Afterburner, or Nvidia Inspector. Be careful which program you choose, I've heard there is compatibility issues... I'm not an expert, so I can't advise beyond this.
Sent from my SM-G935T using TapatalkVasudev likes this. -
Yeah I am using Nvidia Inspector but I am not really sure if it actually undervolts it.
I just undervolted my CPU to -95 and the game ran fine, the degrees were around 85-89. After the game i went to -100 undervolt and while watching youtube, I got a BSOD with WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR. Does that mean I reached the limit? -
Might be high undervolt. Do you have XTU running in background?
-
That BSOD error is usually a hardware failure. Since you undervolted, it is probably just that. Remember the undervolt values need to be stable with all your multipliers. I am using High Performance so I do not really care about the low multipliers. Another thing to remember, the higher your temps, the more unstable the cpu becomes if you undervolt too much.
Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkVasudev and leftsenseless like this. -
I was using it before but I don't like XTU that much. I find ThrottleStop to be quite a lot better. It uses less resources and seems easier to use.
Well without the undervolt I am always getting 99-100 degrees. My multiplier is at 20 and with the -95 undervolt I get like 85-89 degrees while playing. Before my undervolt was at -35 with a multiplier of 16-17 and I was getting 91-94 degrees and sometimes even more. I was using -35 until now because it crashed twice on -40 on another game. -

Your temps are right at the limit for cpu shut down and beyond the limit for thermal throttling on the gpu. I'd open her up, clean out all the dust, clean and repaste both chips, make sure the fans are spinning up to their full potential, and add any thermal pads close to sources of heat near the chips and the heat sinks.

Limit Reasons reports data that is saved within the CPU. It is normal during boot up or when resuming from stand by for this data to be showing random information with many boxes in Limit Reasons showing yellow. This data does not seem to mean anything.
If you want accurate information from Limit Reasons, before you do any stress testing or gaming, open up Limit Reasons and press the CORE, GPU and RING button at the top of each column to clear all limit reasons data from the CPU. After you do that, Limit Reasons should be all black and you are ready to begin testing.
While you are gaming or after you have finished, now you can look at the Limit Reasons data. Now if you see a box in yellow, you know that the CPU has triggered that type of throttling since you last reset this data. The included ReadMe file should explain what some of these things mean. PL1 and PL2 are the two different turbo power limits and EDP is the electrical design point which usually means the CPU is throttling because it reached the current limit. While stress testing, anything in red means that the CPU is currently throttling and that is the reason why. Anything in yellow is simply a record that throttling has taken place since you last reset this data in the CPU. -
I did open it a couple of times and cleaned it with a small paint brush, every little leg of the 2 fans and the heatsink. I did put new paste although it is pretty bad, I cant make the fans snip faster.
What are thermal pads? -
I tried to increase the current limit but it didn't seem to do anything. Don't know why PL1 and PL2 light up since i dont use any turbo power consider my CPU is at 18-20 Mhz.
I don't think I have seen anything blinking in red in Limit Reasons, except the GPU POWER once while I was watching a video in Youtube and the video card decided to be locked at 135 Mhz, which never happened before... I browser uses the Nvidia card. -

Thermal pads help shield or dissipate heat from other components. A quick Google search should tell you what works best for your system, hopefully. I'd use canned air to blow out your internals. Sorry to hear you are having so many problems. At those temps, I don't believe you'll get the full life out of your components. Have you always monitored your temps? How long have you owned your book?

The laptop is 2 years old. I don't expect it to survive a lot long honestly. Now i am at -45 because it froze 3 times at - 95 then at -85 and then at -75 with multipler 20. So i just went to a safer undervolt.
I have always monitered them and they were always pretty high. But with time they just went higher and higher. At some point i was forced to unervolt it to -35 which fixed the problem for about 4 months until is again went to like 95 degreas.
I havent been able to use the laptop at 26 ghz for the last year and half. Whoch means it only survived at full speed for about 6 months...
I do quite a lot of gaming and I am planing on getting a desktop pc but I am moving a lot for now so I need a laptop. If you have a suggestion for a somewhat cheap laptop for gaming that would be great. I am limited at less than 900 pounds honestly though... -

I preinstalled windows 10 fully because my mom decided to check her email on my laptop and ended up encrypting all my files so I had to just preinstall everything. I have tried rolling back drivers but it didn't help

Thanks a lot for the help. I am at -45 on the CPU Core, CPU Cache and IOA on 20 mulitplier and its holding at 90 degrees. Thats pretty good so far. I will look into the thermal pads as I have the feeling the GPU isnt connecting fully with the heatsink. Also my GPU heat limit is 92 degrees and that is when it starts to throttle. I find that to be a really high number. My friends GPU is limited to 78 or 82.Vasudev likes this.

If your heatsink doesn't fully contact with your gpu, you can use a shim to get better contact.
Sent from my SM-G935T using TapatalkHundredBlades likes this. -
Thanks I will do it this way when i get the better thermal paste.
I looked some up and I will probaby buy some. Not sure if they will fit honestly but never a bad idea to have some just in case.Vasudev likes this. -
leftsenseless Notebook Evangelist
They make a pressure paper, it's a little spendy, that will tell you how your surfaces are making contact. You don't want to use a shim if you don't have to. In some cases, using a shim may actually make things worse.

i upgraded to latest Version from OP because throttlestop had expired (i have had extracted the zip and moved the content into the existing folder in the obsidian tool - and chose to override) and i am now getting the message "CPU model is not supported" on my W650KK1 with G4560 1151 LGA CPU. Throttlestop worked fine in older versions before i used it to enable Speedshift and set an undervolt on Core+Cache -150mV. It was working fine with previous versions. How can i solve this error?
