First of all I wanna say thank you for your helpful response. ThrottleStop 6.00 reported temperatures of 99 maximum on Core 1 and 95 on Core 0. But since I switched to ThrottleStop 7.00 beta 2 it reported everything in general 5 degrees higher. Maybe because 6.00 thought the Tjunction is 100 instead of 105. I have cleaned dust out less than a week ago, and I would rather not replace the thermal paste, as I have no experience with that and I'm not sure if that'll break warranty. I will definitely try to limit CPU frequency and see how that works. I suppose I need to limit the multiplier? If I am wrong, please tell me. Also, should I enable BD PROCHOT? I currently have it off, but as it is the iGPU that is overheating the CPU, maybe that'll help?

    Thank you again.

EDIT: Good news, I tried limiting the multiplier to 15, enabling BD PROCHOT and set Intel Power Balance to 7 for CPU and 24 for GPU and now my iGPU isn't throttling anymore! My fps is now constantly above 80 and my temperatures never exceed 98. Thanks for your help!

Another benefit of disabling turbo boost for low demand tasks is keeping temperatures down. When I have my normal unthrottled profile enabled for just browsing the web, the laptop feels warmer and fans spin up periodically. When I switch to the profile where everything is the same but turbo boost is disabled, the laptop stays cooler, and the fan almost never turns on. That's just for continuous web browsing and using the metro email client. I'm not noticing any drop in performance at that.

Using my Yoga 2 Pro in folded tablet mode, it's definitely a welcome difference.

how come my cpu doesnt reset to default clock speeds when i close throttlestop? i have the "Do Not Reset FID / VID on Exit" option unchecked.

Is this question about your 920XM? These CPUs use Turbo Boost so the speed of the CPU is determined by both the FID setting as well as the Turbo Boost setting. Unfortunately the Do Not Reset option does not reset the Turbo Boost feature in your CPU to its default specs. There were never enough complaints about this to motivate me to try and figure out what the default specs really are for hundreds of Intel Core 2 and Core i processors.

About all I can suggest is create a Profile and set it to your default specs and switch to that profile first before exiting ThrottleStop. I am not sure why anyone would ever want to run a 920XM at default specs. These things are beasts with a little help from ThrottleStop as your signature confirms. :)

Perhaps a new feature on the things to maybe do list would be some sort of exit profile that ThrottleStop could switch to when you exit the program. I am a single profile kind of guy and on my laptop, about the only time I exit the program is when I am installing a new version.

Hi, I'm playing with my new N550jk with 4700hq processor. No matter how i push it the cpu won't go past 80degrees and it throttles from 3200 to 3000 when running prime95 8 threads.

I can get it cool enough to stop throttling if i undervolt -110mV, but that's not completely stable.

There is a lot of thermal headroom, is there any way to allow the CPU to reach higher temps?

i used to run only one profile with throttlestop until i started having problems with final fantasy: a realm reborn. while playing the game, i usually get a random nmi_hardware_failure bsod. i disabled all startup programs and enabled certain programs one at a time. eventually, i found that throttlestop was causing the bsod error. so far, the only program i have ever seen to cause a nmi_hardware_failure is that particular game.

    Hello,

I have a dual core processor i7-2620M (2.7GHz to 3.4GHz) but with Turbo the maximum speed is 3.2ghz. Only when using a single core full speed is 3.4GHz. In fact, the turbo multiplier is 5/7 * 100mhz (but 7 is activated only with a core).
You can set 3.4GHz even when using two cores?

ThrottleStop in TRL (turbo ratio limits) indicates the values:

    1 core active: 34
    2 core active: 32
    3 core active: 32
    4 core active: 32

    Thanks

Most Intel mobile CPUs are limited by power consumption. By default, a 4700HQ is limited to 47 watts. Long term, your CPU will throttle so it does not exceed this power limit. Throttling used to be mostly temperature related but now a days it is usually power consumption that limits your performance. You could run your laptop outside in the Arctic and it would still throttle because of this power limit.

Is running ThrottleStop causing the BSOD or are you using ThrottleStop to grossly overclock your CPU and your overclock settings are not stable? Can you run stress tests like Prime95 and LinX or IBT with these settings?

From what I can remember, those numbers in your sig are at or a little beyond a 100% stable overclock. All CPUs degrade over time and when pushing them to the limit, they tend to degrade faster. Try doing some stability testing to make sure your CPU is still 100% healthy. If your hardware problems are only during one game then try running the same game at your default CPU specs. If it runs fine at default then you have to conclude that you are overclocking too much. If it crashes at default then either there is something wrong with your CPU or memory or the game you are playing is bugged. That's why games come with huge patches. They tend to ship long before all of the bugs are fixed.

juan7 - The 34 multiplier can only be used when 1 core is active. That is a limit set by Intel. There is nothing ThrottleStop can do to go beyond that limit.

plazing - The faster you run your CPU, the more heat it is going to produce. You can try lowering the CPU core voltage using ThrottleStop 7 and that will help to reduce heat without negatively effecting performance but there is only so much you can do. If you lower voltage too far you will lose stability and end up with a BSOD. You might have to pull your laptop apart and replace the thermal paste or find a way to improve your laptop's cooling system. The 4th Gen Haswell mobile CPUs are furnaces when pushed hard. Sadly, many laptop manufacturers cooling solutions are barely adequate.

ThrottleStop 6.00 works harder to prevent throttling compared to previous versions. When overclocking, if you are losing stability with ThrottleStop 6.00 at the exact same settings that used to work in ThrottleStop 5.00, it might be because of this. Your comparison might not be a fair comparison if the only reason your CPU is more stable is because it is running slower internally due to throttling. When comparing different versions, run a log file to make sure you are comparing your CPU at the same speed. Run lots of benchmarks at the same settings to find out what is really going on. I always try to make sure that the latest version runs the same, if not better, than any of the previous versions. When adding new features, I always keep this as my primary goal.

Dufus was the brains behind the recent Haswell features like overclocking and voltage adjustment. I am all in when it comes to adding some more voltage adjustment features to ThrottleStop but with no documentation from Intel, I have to wait for information to magically show up in my email box.

I answered this already on the previous page.

    Edit:

Originally, all the information that I got from my not so secret source kind of blew my mind. I finally had a chance to do some more testing and it looks like some adjustable processor cache voltage options and some 4th Gen iGPU voltage options are on the immediate things to do list. Might as well include some adjustable cache ratios while I am at it. My wife is going to kill you Dufus. :p

Hello Everybody, unclewebb i am so amazed by your work with throttle stop. u really saved my life.

i am using a sony vaio vpceb3m1e. bios is really poor and i could only manage to disable c3/c6 states through bios.

although my setting in windows were for full power still i had some issues with Traktor Pro 2.6.8 getting random pop ups for 1-2 seconds. and some graphical lags when loading songs.

i've used throttle stop to monitor my CPU speed, it went from 2400 down to 2000 then 2200 again, then all the way down to 1500 mhz. i've disabled C states and EIST state and the BDPROCHOT option with throttle stop. my cpu now is stuck to 2392.11 mhz. traktor lags went completely off. and u saved my day from purchasing a macbook since i couldnt find any bios update for my model so i can manipulate C states and cpu throttle..

my question is, i've disable all this stuff, and i saved it. i dont want to change cycles , i just need my cpu to run on full speed. now i need to run throttle stop everytime i start my laptop or these settings are saved into the cpu ? when i turn off throttlestop and use it only to monitor nothing is changed on my cpu speed it stays on 2392.11 mhz static. so i guess it saved the settings done on the cpu.

am i right? thanks for all your hard work, i am really amazed!

Thanks GeorgioB. It is always nice to hear from a happy ThrottleStop user. :)

ThrottleStop does NOT permanently save anything to your CPU. When you reboot, you will need to run ThrottleStop again.

When using ThrottleStop, I recommend leaving EIST on. Go into the Control Panel - Power Options and make sure that the Minimum and Maximum processor states are set to 100%. After you do this, there is no need to turn EIST off.

If you have a laptop that does not have C State settings in the bios, you can edit the Windows registry to disable C3/C6/C7. You do not need ThrottleStop to disable these C States. We were just talking about this in this forum last month.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...31329-throttlestop-guide-206.html#post9631401

After you disable these C States, you can use ThrottleStop to toggle C1E on when you need to save power and you can turn C1E off when you need your Core i3-370M to run at its full rated speed.

sadly, tonight i had problems with my gig... i must have made things worse... ill try disabling all C states using registry.

then enable EIST again. also could you please tell me what to do with the : powersaver c0% its set to 35 by default. i've made it 0. what does it makes? and how should it be? what TDP value should i use?

    thanks for your response.

If you want maximum performance from your laptop, do not use the Power Saver feature. Leave it set to 35% and do not check Power Saver. This feature was for the original Core 2 CPUs.

The TDP value controls how much Turbo Boost the CPU uses. You have a Core i3 processor and these do not use Turbo Boost. Increasing TDP on your CPU will not make your CPU run any faster.

With all of the C States disabled your CPU should run at approximately 2400 MHz whether it is idle or at full load. Disabling the C States will make it run much hotter at idle.

dear unclewebb i am so pissed off with my laptop...

i think its almost impossible to make it work.

cpu low max power set to 100% through power management in control panel.

i've changed registry from value 3 to 4 for C states as u instructed me. also i use the above settings shown in the picture on my laptop.

power saver is grayed out and turbo also.

    vaio.jpg

still when i scan my machine with latency mon to check it out i get throttle problems...

    Latmon1.jpg

is there any way to fix this? or the only way is to change machine?

also i've checked my CPU temp using bios on my Desktop and it was like 44-55 C and using throttlestop showed 60-70.

    Untitled.jpg

    anything wrong with temperature?

No, you do not have throttle problems, you have latency problems. Your CPU temperature is fine and the C States are not your main problem so turning them off did not fix anything.

I am not an expert on LatenchMon results so you will have to find a forum about that program and how to understand its results. The hard page fault indicator at the bottom might mean that you have a very slow hard drive. A new solid state hard drive like a Samsung 840 Pro might significantly improve your laptop. It is also likely that you have at least one bad driver on your computer causing problems. Your computer is an older computer so it is possible that these driver problems were never fixed. Unless you can fix these driver problems, LatencyMon is telling you that your laptop is not suitable for real time audio.

Use your LatencyMon results to see if you can find a bad driver or two and see if there are any updated drivers available. There is some more information about this program and its results on their website.

Resplendence Software - LatencyMon: real-time audio suitability checker

    Good luck.

Edit - Bios temperatures and CPU Core temperatures are measured using totally different sensors. These temperatures are never comparable. The bios will also be using different C States compared to when your CPU is idle at the desktop. You can also not compare Core 2 CPU temperatures to Core i CPU temperatures. Your Core 2 E6400 is running too hot. A better or cleaner heatsink and fan would help that problem but that will not solve your audio problems. You need to fix drivers to fix latency problems.

Edit 2 - For comparison, here's how my Lenovo Y510P looks after a 1 minute LatencyMon test. My results were with all C States enabled including C7.

i've enabled the autodemote C1 in options. now i've run latency mon for more than 2 hours, and it said that my machine is fine for audio proccessing.

i am still not so sure.

i've removed the intel rapid storage driver, and intel turbo boost driver from my pc. but even before that i had em i still had problems. after i removed them i have lower latency.

also my problem is for sure not latency regarding audio.

hardpagefault is for a program taking long to respond. the pagefault that my system has is from latmon only and some windows search or host program. the only way to make me problems is to hit hard pagefault on TRAKTOR. that is not happening.

also my latency is 100-120. it is bearable till 1000. so not a problem. the only thing is the cpu throttle. that seems to causing the problem. all bloatware and everything is removed and turned off.

i've read somewhere that these random pops (1 sec stop to the sound) that happens to me sometimes is when the cpu is changing speed.

also to get clear result from latency monitor u need to run it for more than half an hour.

believe me i have lost many many days searching this and that and making new optimizations.

also about the hard drive i've contacted the support from native instruments (the company that held traktor) and told me that it wouldnt fix anything because songs playback are stored into ram when playing.

i am so lost in space...

And if you take the time to clean it and give a good brush remember to take out the old thermal paste and apply a good quality thermal paste. I was amazed that my temps went from 60-65 in summer to ~48-50 by simply applying a good quality thermal paste. Fan and fins were always in good condition since I have a Lenovo Y560p and it's easy to clean.

CPU throttle is not causing you any problems because your CPU is not throttling. You disabled all of your C States so your CPU is always running at 2394 MHz. Your CPU is always at the same speed whether your CPU is idle or at full load. CPU throttling is when your CPU is slowing down but that is not happening to your laptop.

A hard page fault is when a program or Windows has to access your hard drive to find information that is not in memory. An SSD hard drive should significantly reduce the page fault resolution time but it probably will not fix your audio problems.

i have good news! i've made some testing. and here my happy (i think) results.

i was running the windows default sata drivers lately, (i had uninstalled the intel rapid storage driver) now i installed again intel rapid storage.

i've turned my HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm\start to value 3 again, reboot. running throttle stop then latency mon, still got bad results. running without throttle stop the same results almost.

so changed my HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm\start to value 4 again as u said in the post last month, and ran tests again with throttlestop enabled. soon i had no throttle problems and my machine was good for audio processing, but had big hard pagefaults, all of the pagefaults were for rapidstorage, that think doesnt bother me and its fine. as i told you earlier the native instruments support team told me that if traktor isnt hit by a hardpagefault then its no problem at all. also that the disk isnt a problem cause songs are stored in ram when on air.

    Χωρίς τίτλο.jpg

its almost an hour of measuring.

then i've turned down throttlestop restart my laptop and run the tests again,

    without throttle.jpg
    almost the same results.

so i've checked my device manager and saw that after i change value on registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm\start from 3 to 4 i get this alert in cpu section turning yellow.

    Χωρίς τίτλο.jpg

ill translate for you cause its greek.

a driver (service) for this device has been disabled, an alternative driver might gives this operation.

so maybe my cpu drivers was the fault. cause now my machine its no longer gives me that throttle error messages.

    what do you think?

GeorgioB, Traktor (as well as latency sensitive software) requires specific system configs in order to work optimally. For instance, chipset drivers make a world of difference, as well as how CPU priority is configured. Also, ideally you would have little to no networking activity (especially wireless connectivity) that's very disruptive in terms of latency.

Basically, ThrottleStop has no possible influence in latency for latency-sensitive software but rather system configurations and system drivers installed, since most systems work optimally with specific sets of drivers.

EDIT: On a different note, I've been toying with disabling Turbo Boost for gaming and I have to say performance drops are for the most part negligible but I'm getting 15-19C lower temps. I would've already been happy with something like 2-5C lower but this is a significant temp drop for basically no performance drops at all. I'm baffled at this :)

indeed traktor needs low latency. so i have configured my laptop for this.

i have all networking, cameras, microsoft ACPI battery disabled (as u can see in my device manager) so i got really low latency.
also configured power settings to maximum and disabled all unnecessary programs runnings in the background and at startup.

the first time i found that i had problems. i've disabled c3/c6 state through my bios (the only C states i can disable from there in my laptop) and i saw a huge change in my perfomance and latecy dropped almost half!!!

still i had that throttle problems message, and once in a while (once in 5 days) i had a random click in the sound stopping for 1 second.

i've read somewhere that this is happenning when cpu is throttling. now that i've editted registry i get no more that error message. still my laptop is running without problems so far. my laptop is used only for djing.

to get clear results i have to test it this weekend on my gigs to check out if the problem is gone, but for 100% results i have to wait at least one month using it 3 times a week.

    A question if i may:

I have a dell venue 11 tablet with the 4010Y Processor. The GPU is clocked at 850MHZ however the moment i do anything taxing,
For example i run the Intel extreme tuning tool GPU benchmark the GPU clocks back to 400MHZ. It does this while maintaining a 57 degrees temperature.
It's so low that the internal fan doesn't even turn on. I have had this while on battery and while on power.

Can ThrottleStop help here in anyway?

GeorgioB, latency numbers you're getting are quite acceptable, even if not perfect (which is rather hard to reach since it requires very carefully selected hardware). And believe it or not, even something like selective USB suspension can play a part in latency. You should go to System Properties, Advanced tab, Performance settings, Advanced, then select Background Tasks. That will improve audio performance. And while you're on that menu, do set a static page file as drive activity can also impact audio performance.

Also, do note your audio interface drivers play a big part in terms of latency and any potential resulting popping, crackles and overall glitches. What's the current audio interface you're using?

Out of curiosity but is there any chance for an option on ThrottleStop to change profiles when specific software is running? And I apologize in advance if that option is already available and I haven't noticed it. Also, could "Run Program After Profile Change" be used for this purpose? Do note I'd like the profile to change after the program opens and not a change in profile triggering opening the program.

You are not the first person to ask for this feature but I probably will not be adding this useful feature to ThrottleStop anytime soon.

To program this, I would need to write some code that runs in a constant loop and every second it would need to analyze the 101 programs running on your computer and then it would need to compare that list to a list of programs within ThrottleStop. It would have to continually do this so this feature would work.

Once a game or app was found, it would have to continue to monitor this program list so it could switch back when the program ended.

Handy feature for some but that seems like a lot of wasted CPU cycles. The day I turn ThrottleStop into a CPU hogging bloated pig, my Alienware friends who love to bench are going to hang me!

Scale - I do not own a Dell Venue Tablet so there is no way for me to know if ThrottleStop can help you at all. Tablets are designed to be low power devices so ThrottleStop might not make any significant difference. Some of the low power U CPUs are severely limited in the bios, usually based on power consumption and not temperature.

tribaljet, i have disabled usb suspension a long ago both from device manager and from power settings. also i have disabled my virtual memory (pagefile) cause its not needed.

i am using traktor pro 2.6.8 and pioneer ddj t1 controller. using the latest drivers with 512 sample size.

i cannot see why latency could be a problem on my system. if it was then it should be happening almost everytime. not randomly.

i think it was the cpu driver the problem. i am sure thats hardware problem, cause i didnt get this laptop for djing, i used to do it with cds. then i swapped to digital djing and i used my already owned laptop. but i see that it can make the work. i am using only 2 virtual decks and my cpu load is no more than 20% when i use effects loading songs etc... normally it runs at 5%. ram no more than 1,5gb used. to other 2,5 spare.

Ah, fair enough. I wasn't aware that so many CPU cycles would be wasted through that monitoring usage. But could there be a way for ThrottleStop to be able to add an option on a .exe/shortcut context menu to open said program with a specific profile? Or being able to run x program and it would automatically change for that program alone (no need for it to revert back since I imagine ThrottleStop would have to keep checking whether the program was still running or not), rather than constantly monitoring open programs? Basically, something static rather than always scanning for program changes.

I have seen that NI drivers can be finnicky at times. For instance, my Audio 2 DJ drivers still cause me problems when it comes to USB port types, and the same drivers prevent my CPU going into deep C states. With that said, I would suggest you try different drivers, even if older as there are many reports (mine as well) of specific older drivers being both more stable and allowing for lower latencies without glitching. It might be worth checking out the NI forums as well.

Ideally a laptop's software environment should be nearly barebones as to prevent any random background activity that very likely will interfere with uninterrupted audio usage.

After some more testing i noticed TDP throtlle turning on when the gpu clocks back. and intel extreme tuning reports 100% power limit throttling.

Do i have any option to lock or increase the power limit (the strange thing is that it doesn't under clock instantly but after a few seconds about 10~)

    Hello
    I have a Lenovo g500 with i7 3612QM 2.10ghz
I want to undervolt to reduce as much as it possible temps.
    Can i?

papakitou - ThrottleStop can not be used to undervolt a Core i7-3612QM.

Scale - On many tablets that have 2nd, 3rd and 4th Generation low power U CPUs, ThrottleStop can not be used to increase the power limits. Thanks for offering to let me use your tablet remotely but without hardware in my hands or the full Intel documentation, there is not much I can do.

tribaljet - You have some good ideas but my available time for project ThrottleStop is very limited. Why not set up some keyboard shortcuts to change ThrottleStop profiles? Then you can swap profiles before or after you play a game without having to open up the ThrottleStop user interface.

ThrottleStop can undervolt the older Core 2 Duo processors and it can be used to adjust the voltage on the newer 4th Generation Haswell processors but it can not be used to undervolt any of the older Core i CPUs like you have.

You can try Intel XTU and see if your CPU is supported but as far as I know, there is no software available to undervolt your 3rd Generation CPU.

@papatikou - ThrottleStop is an amazing product that I would be lost without, but I think almost everything is locked down with the 3612QM. I don't even have an option to undervolt the 3920XM on my Alienware M18xR2 with an unlocked BIOS. (I would never want to, but I don't see a way to do it if I ever did.)

Why are you wanting to undervolt the QM CPU? Is it overheating? If you are looking to reduce power to run longer on battery, the voltage should drop by lowering the clock speed with the "Power Saver" option in ThrottleStop. This will also help with temps, but it comes as the expense of a reduction in performance.

If you are having thermal management problems, cleaning the fans and heat sink radiators, and using a extremely high quality thermal paste such as Liquid Ultra or IC Diamond are probably going to be the best options. If it has not been done recently, cleaning out the fans and heat sink radiators may be enough. Using compressed air blowing through vents doesn't get the job done. At best, doing so only temporarily moves the crud out of the way and it will end up clogging the cooling system again in short order. You need to take it apart to do it right.

As far as I know, the only under volting you could do with the 3rd Generation processors was if you had some motherboard specific software. This might be available for a desktop board but it was never available for any laptops that I know of. Intel finally saw the error of their ways and reintroduced under volting with the 4th Gen CPUs. They pretty much had to do something because the 4th Gen are like small nuclear infernos during a melt down when you start clocking them up.

Having overhauled my cooling just last week I set my 920xm to 28x (3.8ghz) on all cores. This is stable for anything I do.
This program enables me to push my old chip like mad. Cheers unclewebb!

This is a thank you note to unclewebb.

Take a look at this link to see what I did with Throttlestop on my VAIO Tap 11 (with Intel i7-4610Y).

Although I still can't figure out how to tweak the TDP values (or whether it is tweakable at all), I used another feature of Throttlestop that helped a great deal.

Undervolting is doing wonders for my VAIO Tap 11

Yes, it's definitely crazy how hot Haswell processors get, and it doesn't help that they are designed to shut down at 100°C instead of 105°C like 3rd Gen procs. It doesn't take a lot of effort to hit 100°C when you bump the clock speeds on a Haswell CPU. Haswell is an unimpressive product overall, and a major disappointment to see something this half-baked from Intel. That said, ThrottleStop goes a long way to make it a usable product. It has always been fantastic with my Sandy and Ivy XM CPUs, but I cannot imagine how utterly worthless the über-turd 4930MX blast furnace would be without it.

    Hello,

I just started using Throttlestop for my Vaio Flip because the bios would throttle the CPU at 78C... -_- Anyways, Throttlestop works perfectly and now I'm able to do some casual gaming on this thing, but I have an issue regarding minimizing to the tray. I have the options checked, but Throttlestop just sits in my taskbar. I am currently using 7.00 b2. I saw an older post that said to use a notification area cleaner, but that didn't do anything for me :/

EDIT: I derp'd. Please ignore this post.
