ok, just now I changed some hdd settings in bios on my d620 and my vista started to boot much quicker...
changed from performance setting to default, can't recall right now what is right name for it...
anyway, it has three options, for "high performance", for "low noise" (for hhd-s) and off, like default setting..
all the time my laptop run on performance setting, so, I tried this default and it seams better...got few mb in benchmarks as well...
could it be solution for my w7 problem ???
-
That strange, why would that setting affect SSDs? Does anyone know if it really does? I think I have that option on my Dell M1530 and I believe it is only for acoustic management... which is not an issue with SSDs.

you wouldn't know of a freeware alternative to acronis? I would hate to spend money on something I am only going to use once. -
heavyharmonies Notebook Evangelist
Actually, you can download a 15-day version of Acronis True Image Home 2009 for free from www.acronis.com... just make sure you're done in 15 days.
-

I saw that, but I was worried it would be tainted/limited in some ways like most trials. If that's not the case, then thanks! -
Heck, don't get in a rush. Why don't you wait for 10 years? You'll really get a deal on a faster, larger SSD than what we're getting to day. You can come back here and laugh at us all.
-
Thank you Wolf, I now understand how I would get the faster newer Samsung 128 MLC. I wish the next "round" of these and other SSD drives would come much more quickly
-
You could also use a trial of Drive Snapshot:
http://drivesnapshot.de/en/index.htm
It should work without limits during the trial... and it will preserve your partition alignment should you so desire. -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Yeah, I usually just install the trial, let it do it's thing, and uninstall it
Then do the same thing again the next time I wanna re-image instead of re-install.
LOL. Ten years ago we had these blazing fast 10GB 7200RPM 3.5" PATA hard drives. 14ms access time! Can you believe it!? The IO must have been in the double-digit range! That's right, I'm pointing and laughing at all those fools who bought 10GB 7200RPM drives in 1998; if they waited ten years they could have bought these newfangled SSD things we've got here...
EDIT: Also, Fusion IO vs X25-E:
http://www.tomshardware.com/picturestory/493-x25-e-fusion-io-iodrive.html -
Yeah but in ten years, the standard connection wouldn't be the sata you have in your laptop so you're screwed. With technology, there is no point in waiting for any arbitrary amount of time, just wait for a worthwhile shift of paradigm. Perhaps buy the last of its kind.

I would imagine that for a lot of people, the decision when to buy is less a matter of specs but one of price... when the price of a given widget drops to "acceptable".
When things go on clearance as the next generation comes out is often a good time for deals. Same thing with refurbs.
$1,800 for the Dell XPS 630i config I wanted? Not so much. $1K from the Dell Outlet? Sure.
$1,900 for a Dell Latitude E4200? Ouch. $975 from the outlet? Hmm... more viable.
Sony Vaio TZ SSD + HDD dual-drive config for $3,600. Yer kiddin', right? $1,400 brand new on closeout... hmm, nice price.
Samsung 64GB SLC SSDs for $600-1,000? Too pricey. $180 each? I'll take a dozen.

!!!!!!!!!!
Where do I buy those bloody 1.8" to 2.5" adapters? -
heavyharmonies Notebook Evangelist
1.8". Nice.
But don't most 1.8" SATA implementations in notebooks and UMPCs use ZIF connectors rather than standard SATA? The ones I've seen do. -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Yeah, this uses like a mini SATA connector (or whatever it's called). You need a form factor and connector adapter like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/1-8-2-5-LENOVO-...hash=item270348935939&_trksid=p3286.m63.l1177. But this is the only one on eBay and not only does it cost $70, it's from the UK. Fail. Why can't they just give us the 2.5" variant at the same price? Oh, that's right, cuz people can actually use the 2.5" ones, right?
-
Micro SATA adapter
I think that 1.8" drive with this adapter will fit where was 2.5" drive. -
Only works if your laptop provides 3.3v to the power connector though in most cases. I'm not sure how common that is as most laptop 2.5" drives run on 5v only.
-
Micro SATA 16 pin data and power socket 1.8 inch drives
This with some DIY will do the job
-
well, seller wrote it works both 3.3 and 5 volts way
-
Sony Vaio Z has both 3.3 and 5V wires in its internal SATA connectors (total 2)
IBM/Lenovo should work, too - as Ebay is full of those 1.8" Samsung SLCs with 2.5" adapter from Lenovo. -
You should buy when the happiness/benefit > cost.
-
Yes! Ulimately, one's ultimate happiness is all that matters in life.
-
Yeah, that's great except for the 1.8" factor. Hopefully the will also release a 2.5".
I should get my Sammy's today!!
-
Anyone here actually use one of these? If so, any problems?
-
anyway, guys, how do you configure your noise management on your dell laptops with ssd-s, did you guys notice any difference with any of those modes ???

not all of the stuttering may be ssd problems. i get enough stuttering in normal disks just as well. as normal disks have better balance between reading and writing, the behaviour is different. but f.e. outlook can block an os when starting while logging in for minutes (check my work-notebook
)
it's davepermen, not perman
but yes, the intels and sammies and mtrons should be no problem. i don't trust ocz anymore and never will. they are too much on the "lets make some money with ssd's" side. others try to get their ssd into server business. they care about higher quality.
nice that all of those are no problem with mtrons which are close to a year and a half old now
(except mmorpg, which i hate with a passion, thus can't test).
-
I'll be testing Warhammer Online pretty thoroughly when my samsung arrives later today (on truck for delivery) i forget... do i just pop it in the bay and start loading vista or do i have to set something so that it recognizes the SSD in the bay?
-
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
The description implies that the thing is meant to be soldered to a PCB. You're supposed to use it for DIY applications; in this case you'd somehow have to make the entire adapter yourself using this connector, a standard connector, and some thing in the middle. I', sure some of us are fanatics, but I dunno how many of us are willing to (or have the capacity to) go through with that
I don't think noise management does anything. On my E6400, it's set to "bypass" or something like that.
How long have you had your Mtrons in particular? It's great to see that at least SOME drives are holding up so well after extended use. -
Yes, You got a problem if there is no 3.3V on power conector.
I think that this will not help if You don't have 3.3V on power connector that 1.8" drives require. -
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
mine are now around 5 months old? dunno exactly.
usage rather random. from the ordinary stuff (browsing notebookreview much too often, msn, etc) to programming, to audio production (ableton live) to movie/editing (quickly filling up storage space.. currently 85% filled of the 120gb on my pc), installing and uninstalling some os' for test (sometimes installing, sometimes imaging back from the homeserver). gaming. blueray playback. a lot of stuff
-
yes, its bypass, mine was on performance and it seams it runs better in bypass mode
-
Super Talents answer to Vertex has landed
and the 64gb is significantly cheaper!!! -
You need one of these : http://www.national.com/mpf/LM/LM3940.html to solder or http://www.ulinktech.com/products/hw_adapter.html too
-
According to e-mail I got from SuperTalent - LE version (SLC) is also released last week.
I am definitely looking forward to seeing some benchmarks
-
Do you think Samsung will release more of their SSD's other than this one?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147056 -
Newegg prices:
OCZ 60GB = $245 (- $20 MIR), 120GB = $399 (- $20 MIR)
ST 64GB = $205, 128GB = $399 -
Big Vertex 250 price drop:

Is that SuperTalent the same thing as the Vertex... but with a different firmware or something?
-
Yep, same Indilix controller.
-
heavyharmonies Notebook Evangelist
That's a 1.8" version. The 2.5" with the same specs is the one from geeks.com that many have been jumping on. Which "other" models are you referring to? -
I think he's wondering if more Samsung drives will appear in mainstream outlets such as Newegg, and not rebrands by other companies.
-
they must have dropped the price inbetween my post an urs
-
Well I think it's easier to buy 2.5" SSD!
-
I don't see why too bother with OCZ or Super Talent because You can buy 64GB Samsung SLC for Your money.
-
jsut threw it out there... hopefully my sammy is sitting at my front door as we speak
but i'm all for supporting a newcomer like indilinx if they are striving for a quality product. i think they are anyway... -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
That's exactly what I was thinking when I saw the $205 price tag on the 60GB SuperTalent model
I agree, actually. I think the Indilinx controller has potential. Hopefully a couple of firmware updates can rid it of whatever's causing the performance degradation. Hopefully Intel can get a fix out for the same problem as well XD -
ehhh. Vertex doesnt fully support Thinkpad in ACHI. My laptop can not locate the hard drive, and I have to disable ACHI, then recovery entire OS again.
-
I'm starting to wonder about the Vertex 2 we heard about a while back, but haven't seen for sometime. I'm kinda surprised OCZ didn't show it off at CEBIT.
http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?Itemid=67&id=11365&option=com_content&task=view -
Last i was in the ocz forums just before the vertex's "releases" Tony mentioned it a few times to get some hype
