    Hello guys,

After reading through these threads which contain tons of information (cudos to them and the community):
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/mxm-gpu-resellers-in-the-world.804197/
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/successful-mxm-gpu-upgraded-laptops.805136/
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/the-hopeful-of-keeping-mxm-3-0b-alive-thread.795048/

I went in search for a GTX 1070 MXM upgrade for either my Alienware M18x R2 or my Alienware 18 (Viking).

My google, ebay, amazon, newegg, taobao, aliexpress/alibaba came up with all kinds of results and I just wanted to help out those who are in the same position and need some help / advice to make up there mind.

[I'm sorry if part of the information here has already been described / discussed on the other threads. The information available here is a compilation of the available data I found]

[Any additional information is of course welcomed to make this thread even better]

    MXM standard Dimensions:
    -mxm 3.0b is 82mm x 105mm like MSI Gtx1060
    -mxm 3.0 is 100mm x 124mm like Clevo Gtx1060
    -mxm 3.1 is 94mm x 111mm like Aetina Gtx1070
    -mxm 3.1b is 94mm x 105mm like MSI Gtx1070

Let's get into it and look into the existing and available models these days:

It looks like this last model is the one most available on ebay + Taobao

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    According to this:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/successful-alienware-18-msi-gtx-1070-mxm.818900/

The MSI card works with a little dremel work on the heatsink. The idea is to see if the upgrade is possible with the other models, except Clevo of course.

Let me know what you think.

The last model is Dell P5000 PCB with a GTX 1070 die from my understanding.

Results have been a bit mixed from what I have seen but not as bad as the early Aetina, Eurocom, Gecube models.

Zotac is likely the best practical choice but supply is very limited, requires MSI vBIOS to output internal panel. MSI is more common but isnt MXM 3.0b and requires a bit more attention to the VRM cooling or will shut down to prevent damage to the VRMs

    Great post!
You've only missed the two mosfets on the right side on every PCB:

thank you on that one, let me correct that straight away.

What about Aetina, GECUBE (desktop chip) and the P5000 PCB ones, how many MOSFETS do you count?

I think nine on Aetina and eight on Quadro’s PCB...

Both 1070M and Quadro P5000M have the same PCB configuration, but if you look at the Quadro M5000M (previous generation, Maxwell), it is the same as GTX 980M, and they all very much look alike...

Also, Quadro usually comes out AFTER the general market GTX... This might be the reason why inital PCBs for 1070m come in all kinds of layouts and as soon as Quadro P5000 came out, Nvidia decided to streamline production for both pro and general markets based on the Quadro PCB... just my thoughts... nothing proven here...

I'm very surprised at the PCB layout differences between early GTX 1070M models and the late models...

If Zotac model is not available, nor MSI model, probably last decent solution is the MXM 3.0b cards (black PCB) with a MSI Vbios, right ?

Black PCB Dell doesnt need a vbios.

The Zotac card needs the MSI vBIOS because its installed originally in a desktop which doesnt require a signal output to a built in panel.

MSI 1070 is likely easily available here or on ebay and is the best card to date, but requires some modification pending the model of the machine in question (most need it to my knowledge)

Kudos @tomx thank you for this thread +5 rep

If anyone is after a Gtx 1070 mxm this is my preference/order (Aetina isn’t listed as I haven’t had one yet). I have had at least 20 Gtx 1070 mxm cards and from what I can gather this is the order from which is the most reliable:

    1) MSI GTX 1070 MXM - An over engineered marvel of a gpu, rarely ever has mosfet issues and clocks high whilst fitting most chassis.

    2) Clevo GTX 1070 MXM - only for Clevos but can be modded into a normal laptop housing if you have the space :D I have noticed that these are fairly reliable but vram mosfet cooling isn’t as great as the msi or others to be honest which is why some of them end up failing surprisingly.

    3) Quadro/Dell variant GTX 1070 MXM - A very safe choice, literally one of the best ones you can get too. Core quality on my sample was good and it performed great, even though it was limited to 100w. These can be pushed to 110-115w spec if your willing to do the vbios mod ;)

    3) Zotac GTX 1070 MXM - I have had a few of these and they are actually decent, although they don’t clock as high as the MSI/Clevo or Dell variants they are mxm spec. However the 1070 tdp is limited to 100w like some others. I don’t mind this though... Oh yeah and the vbios definately needs to be flashed to allow internal edp signal

    4) Last but not least Gecube/Eurocom GTX 1070 MXM - As much as I like Eurocom AVOID THESE LIKE THE PLAGUE. If you want your mxm card going up in smoke go ahead but I wouldn’t trust these cards. Mosfets used are underpowered for even the meagre 90w the 1070 gpu die pulls (wattage was revised by eurocom on further revisions). I mean really Gecube? You couldn’t engineer something slightly better??? Even the improved revision suffers from the same blowing up mosfets. If you changed all the mosfets on the board with some nice top tier stuff you’ll be sorted though :) but that’s something @Khenglish knows about way more than me :D
Moral of the story adding more crappy mosfets doesn't mean a gpu can handle the 1070 chips rated tdp

Ahhh super news! Great Master @DaMafiaGamer spilling out the goodies! thank you!

So if we look at these Alienware models:

    *** Alienware M18x R2 ***
    - it has been done with Quadro:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/m18x-r2-with-quadro-p5000-gtx-1070-is-a-success.813082/
    - it seems to have been done with a 1070 (but which one?):
    https://www.alienowners.com/threads/alienware-m18x-r2-gtx-1070.8095/
    https://www.dell.com/community/Alienware/M18x-R2-graphics-card-upgrade-4/td-p/7641033
    https://www.dell.com/community/Alienware/M18x-R1-possible-GPU-upgrades/td-p/7494767

I would imagine best options would be :
    1) MSI (with the same kind of work on the heatsink as with Alienware 18)
    2) Quadro/Dell variant GTX 1070 MXM
Clevo is not an option because of the size/form of the card

    *** Alienware 18 (Viking) ***
    Best options would be :
    1) MSI (with the work on the heatsink as done by you)
    2) Quadro/Dell variant GTX 1070 MXM
Clevo is not an option because of the size/form of the card

Now the real question is who to choose from all the available Quadro/Dell variant GTX 1070 MXM models on the web as they all seem to be the black PCB dell variant... and there have been a few bad / sad stories with those chinese cards... according to @TheReciever .

Great thread! I burned my MSI GTX1070 and now looking for a way to repair it or replace it.
Problem is I just got the watercooling loop that is specific for the MSI 1070

The build quality looks solid and the company trustworthy... however with VAT and delivery the price goes to 1000$ :(
There is MSI 1070 on eBay in USA ... with shipping + VAT price is around 500$

Price is not that high actually, compared to AETINA's...
But 125$ for freight charge! LOL
Anyway now that nvidia/amd killed the mxm standard, we can now only rely on private manufacturers for MXM cards...
Unfortunately we will all switch to BGA rather sooner than later... :(

It doesn't effect performance, but having too few Mosfets and VRM's can leave the card prone to failing more often. If you have a lot of VRM's and Mosfets, the card will last a lot longer and can have more stable overclocks.

    Hello there guys!

This thread needs to be revived its just really awesome thanks!

Is any of those MXM 3.0b 1070s going to work in my Clevo P770DM-G Laptop ? my current GPU is 980m but its failing on me so I want to replace and upgrade, maybe it last few more years especially in these tough times I dont want to build a PC.

and any modifications required for it to work ? I know how to do the INF file mod, but I still have 0 ideas about vBIOS and how/what to change about it. will any 1070 from different manufacturers work fine if it fits the mxm 3.0b slot ?

I just wish it was plug and play. for the time being am looking at the last one on the list, as it has the same chip outlay to my 980m so I wont have to change the Heatsinks.

    please enlighten me =)

Don't know if this is the place to post it but here goes :
I have a GT70 2oc currently rocking a GTX 770m, but I wanted to upgrade it to a 1070, i went up and bought one of those Dell variants from AliExpress without much thought, it hasn't arrived yet, but probably will in the next 1 work or so ( already in my country).
Do I have any hope of it working?

It “should” work, but be sure to mod the drivers right. Make sure to aggressively test it ASAP as they seem to be hit or miss. If it has ANY issues, return it immediately. I personally bought one of the Dell variants and i had issues getting into the BIOS alongside shutdowns when it used more than 110ish watts of power.

Gonna try my hand at it today, as the Thermal pads just arrived! The card arrived a few days ago ( less than a week)

If you need help modding the drivers let me know and i’ll walk you through the process. Also, be sure to test if you can get into the BIOS.

Any results? I'd be very interested to know as I have a Clevo P770DM with a 970m that I'd like to upgrade to the gtx 1070. Some people said I may have to Dremel the case a bit to get it to work but I thought since both cards are mxm 3.0b they would fit the same.

No, this is not a good option. Look for MSi GTX 1070.

That's 3.1b, I need 3.0b to replace the same layout as the 970m that is in there right now.

Is it not possible to mod the chassis a bit?
Believe me, you don't want the Chinese Frankenstein, called GTX 1070 with 3.0 layout...

As I have already told this member in another thread, The MSi card requires the removal of the M.2 slot and a capacitor. The modification was authored by @DaMafiaGamer when using the MSi card.

The other options on the table are P5000, P5200 and RTX 5000 all of which are expensive and more importantly unconfirmed.

@SierraFan07 that MSI card is your best option bro, it will cost you an m.2 slot but believe me it’s the most reliable 1070 mxm to date. It’s virtually bulletproof if cooled well. That’s one thing I’ve liked about MSI’s pascal mxm cards, ain’t that right @Reciever :D

I was warned by the seller that this card would only work in certain MSI lappys. Tried everything to install in GT72-6QE. Closest I got was it being recognized in device manager with a note that it had been stopped because it had reported a problem.Wazzup??. Easy to say, get an MSI 1070 but I have never seen anyone post a list of the different versions and what works and what dont! 321.PNG Capture 123.PNG Capture 123.PNG Capture 123.PNG

Not sure what you mean by "post a list of the different versions and what works and what dont!" The original post of this thread has a link to many of the upgraded cards and in what laptops they were upgraded in. http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/successful-mxm-gpu-upgraded-laptops.805136/

Im not asking about "many" upgrade cards.People are saying the MSI GTX 1070 is the best card to use as mentioned above. Thing is not all the MSI GTX 1070 cards can be used as an upgrade. I have been playing this game for 15 years and I can tell you that the card I posted CANNOT be used in the GT72 6QE and that includes Hard v bios flashing. At present I am aware of 4 different versions, and then you have 1BA1 and 1BE1. non g sync and g sync versions. Your comment about not being sure of what I mean obviously excludes you from providing relevant info.Unfortunately thats the trend on this site.
