Performance differences between 965m and 970m ha been discussed with theoretical figures, tamarinde is willing to test and confirm before additional purchases are made

I used the flashlight from my mobile phone to light up the screen, was a pain in the butt to do all this way it took me over 5hours.

I have the gtx 965m now clocked to core 1286mhz (from about 900mhz) and memory at 7000mhz (from 5000mhz). Everything works fine but the card starts to throttle because it needs more power, core speed goes down when running furmark, this also happens when running some games that stress the GPU alot.

I have to clock the memory down all the way to 4000mhz if i want to keep my core at 1286mhz without ever throttling.

I also installed a custom cooler with heatpipes in the CD/DVD slot for the GPU (because my CPU started to overheat after swapping the GPU).

Now temps are at 75-80c for the CPU and 60-70c for the GPU (full load temps).

    EDIT:
I did some benchmarking and it seems that i get higher performance out of the card when memory and core are clocked, even if the card throttles sometimes.
With core 1286mhz and memory 4000mhz i got avg. 227fps at fps benchmark map in CS:GO
And with core 1286mhz and memory at 7600mhz i got avg. 302fps running the same benchmark.

BTW tried clocking the memory even more but at 8000mhz i got errors so i settled with 7600mhz to be on the safe side.

Congrats! Please post pictures. I've never heard of a card throttling due to not getting enough power. Are you sure it wasn't due to heat?

970m gets about 66FPS in Furmark and was power limited until I modded it
Btw be careful with modding because mine drew too much power and blew the psu or motherboard and now both are dead.

So i'm looking at upgrading from my thinkpad T410.
    I've found a 8560w with a 5950 and a 2540M on ebay for 160, and i've found a Dell Precision M4600 with an i7 and either a quadro 1000m or a M5950 for 200.
With all the difficulty that people are having the the 85xx/87xx laptops, i'm considering just going for the Precision for the sheer purpose of upgrade ability.
Should i go for the 8560w?

    Hello,
I'm new to this forum and it would be nice if you could answer a few questions.
After reading this thread I decided to purchase an HP8570w with a possible later upgrade of the GPU.
The focus ist not on games but rather on hardware decoding of H.265 (HEVC) and VP9.

    First question
Does anyone know if the GeForce GTX 965M (refresh version) does fit this decoding requirement
I'd think it probably does because it got an FM206 core which according to this
    https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.ph...able_of_GPUs_containing_a_PureVideo_SIP_block
    got Feature set F:
"Introduced dedicated HEVC Main (8-bit) & Main 10 (10-bit) and VP9 hardware decoding video decoding up to 4096 × 2304 pixels resolution"
But I'm not quite sure as this card is not explicitly listed in the article.

    Second question
I could either purchase HP8570w with NVIDIA Quadro K1000M or K2000M
Would it be possible to use the cooling system of these cards (fan, heat sink) for the 'GeForce GTX 965M' or does this card need a complete different?
If it's possible would it be better to choose K2000M as its TDP is 55W comparing to 45W of the K1000M as the GTX 965M has a TDP of 50W (or is the cooling system of K1000M and K2000M the same)?

    Third question
    The post
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...spec-video-cards.768347/page-14#post-10491036
states that it would be possible to activate the on-board Intel HD Graphics 4000.
Around 2012/2013 this feature was denied

Did that change due to a BIOS update?

    Hi guys,

Just bought and installed GTX 965m on my 8560w. The laptop posts and even boots windows (I can hear the sound when it loads), but the screen is black. I followed the advise here and attached a monitor through VGA, but nothing shows on it either. I stared a bit more and noticed that the screen is actually working, but it is extremely dark, like it is on minimum brightness. I doubt this to be windows driver issue, because I never see HP boot logo and cannot see BIOS either. So is that a defective card? I thought that the card either works or it doesn't and needs to be flashed. But in my case it does work, but the signal projected on the screen is like with minimum brightness.

    Would appreciate any advise ...

this is normal and it is a driver/firmware issue as the card can't activate the back light without the correct driver being installed on those hp systems. Another user(a few posts before this one) had a hell of a time installing that driver under these conditions. I suggest putting a very strong light behind the screen or maybe disconnect the screen so the system defaults to VGA. or if you have an official hp docking station try turning the laptop on with the lid closed and have a monitor connected to the dock

Note: It is also important to make sure your card has an LVDS vBios installed (I assume it does based on what you have said)

not sure TBH, if you can see anything windows-like on the screen even if it is difficult to do so I would assume that means it has the right vBios type already the rest of it should just be installing the driver

Hmmm, last 2 boots it still logs into windows, but I don't see anything now. Tried to use my mobile flashlight and a strong lamp behind the screen but nothing changes. Maybe @adix87 dismantled the screen so he can have access to the lcd ...
@adix87: can you share what is the secret pls.

since you have a vga monitor maybe you can try turning the system on and closing the lid immediately so that it defaults to vga from that point onward, of course you will need a mouse and keyboard to go through all the steps

Never occurred to me that slapping the lid immediately would default to VGA. Unfortunately I've returned the monitor to my neighbor and it is already too late to ask him to borrow it again. Appreciate the quick responses and trying to help! It is weird that initially I could see (barely but see) windows desktop, but now it is gone.

I was going to try and bind flash, but unfortunately my 8560w loads windows irrelevant of the freedos flash I've inserted. So that option fails as well ..

So to sum up: if slapping the lid does not activate VGA and it doesn't boot from bootable DOS flash, what are my options?

You're very welcome, I personally would hold off on flashing. Is there anyway you could take this laptop to work and simply use a monitor there?

Yeah, I have a monitor I can use there, but clearly if the VGA doesn't activate on closing the lid (it doesn't activate in normal conditions when in windows), it would be a dead end .. I would try this in 2 weeks (going on vacation tomorrow) and share/ask for further ideas ..

    @ChanceJackson
Would you (or anyone else of course) be so kind nice to answer me the following (as I'm a bit confused about the eDP vs. LVDS and DC vs. non-DC thing). In another thread you posted
"The way I understand it all dreamcolors from Zbook g1 and earlier are all LVDS and in the case of Z books connects to an adapter that connects to eDP of the notebook "
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...m-3-0b-higher-spec-video-cards.768347/page-15
Does that mean that in the case of an 8570w there is always an LVDS display that connects to LVDS on the motherboard regardless of dreamcolor display or not?

Did anyone ever managed to get a GTX 965M work with an 8570w with dreamcolor display? Maybe adix87 you had a dreamcolor one?

You are LEGEND buddy!!! That was it! I was able to see at the beginning because it was daylight and the laptop was facing the window of the room. As soon as it got dark, I was no longer able to see. I tested the soundoflenses method and I am once again able to see. It would be royal pain in the arse to get the IDs and setup the modified ini driver in these conditions but I hope I would manage. Thanks a ton!!!

    Congratulations and have fun!
As I'm also interesting in purchasing the 965M could you please tell me:
Does your 8560w have a dreamcolor or non dreamcolor display?
Do you have an MXM3.0a or b card?
What kind of cooling do you use?

Thanks, I haven't had the time to play around with it yet, but surely will. Mine is a TN (Non DC). The slot in 8560w/8570w is for MXM 3.0a, so I purchased 3.0a card. Haven't made any changes to cooling and do not plan to. I was using k2000m till now and according to specs it has the same TDP as the 965m 2nd rev. Since I do not plan on overclocking, I don't expect overheating issues.

Heads up, Windows 10 Creators Update just got installed and it reset the display driver as if no display driver was ever installed (i.e. I went to Device Manager -> Display Adapter -> Driver, expecting that the Rollback driver button would be available, but alas NO).

So before you agree to install the Creators Update, have in mind that the whole procedure of disabling driver signature check and installing modified driver would have to be repeated. Annoyance ...

Yeah I had that happen to me on my Zbook 15 with GTX 1070 mxm I didn't mind it to much because it gave me an opportunity to try a slick driver inf modification method

instead of creating a whole new line and choosing a section id an configuring a bunch of stuff just find one of the gpu device ids already configured for your laptop and change it to the new card doing so allowed me to use the StereoScopic 3D features my laptop had with a K610/1100/2200M but on my GTX 1070 which I believe is disabled otherwise

sadly i thought so but after testing with my i7 3630QM with my 965m
while hard gaming my cpu would hit 100-104C and throttle down. also my gpu would hit 85C

i made a mod with a second heatpipe-fan and the cpu is now at 70-80 max and gpu only 60C

By the way as you understood...... I AM BACK!!!! :)

what did i miss all those months? i read the last 7 pages. i am glad more people are moving on to the 8570w + 965m backwagon...

by the way today i uploaded a video with my laptop. i had been thinking of doing one about the whole thing for months. but i just got the time. enjoy...

Lately i have been thinking about installing a 980m MXMb in my laptop just to check if it is possible. i wont have issue with temps cause my current setup is ok. I just want to know if the 100W that the 980m needs will be covered by the mxma slot of my mobo or both will be fried...
by the way... did the link you posted some pages ago show a 8560w with a 970m?? mxmb???
    https://forum.51nb.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=1691822&highlight=8560W+970M

ig it works there it will work in our 8570. and if the 970m works then maybe the 980m too.... hmmmm

wait wait... your zbook had originaly which card? our screens in the 8570w can not work with 10xx series (1050 - 1060 -1070)
the only lineup we can use is the 9xx series

does your zbook have an MXM b slot?

aside from the cooling mods and the physical mods to fit the card. did you have to do anything else? does the card get enough power from the mxma slot? does it overheat? throttle?

also, what card did your laptop come with? how can it be that it works with a 10xx series card? they are suposed to have extra power cable that connects to them? how did you give them extra power?

All I had to were the physical mods and inf mods.

Not all 1070 cards require an external power connector for Example the MSI 1070 and Zotac 10 series cards all get power from the bus connector.

As far as I can tell my card can get enough power but I have seen in rare cases where so much power is pulled that my cpu throttles even when it shouldn't based on reported temps I have decided on under clocking my cpu to prevent that from happening in GTA5 where it would happen all the time

my laptop came with a k1100m

can you tell me exactly which zbook model you have?

also your zbook is eDP but i think our 8570w with the normal 1080 screen is LVDS ?? only the dreamcolor screens are eDP right?

I have zbook 17 g4 fully equipped. The dreamcolor screens are not as great as people make them out to be I've had dead pixels and all kinds happen to mine

i dont care about their quality. i just want edp screen so that a 1060m will work.

i am also thinking of going 980m . i can find ones for 350Euro . i think they wouyld work ok but i dont know if i will have to buff the cooling more...
after seeing benches , a 980m is the same as a 1060m ... so why the hassle going for a 1060m (except the lower TDP of the 1060)

do you have a thread for your 1060m upgraded zbook? so i can see pics and stuff..

    Zbook 15 G1 aka HP 1909

The original dreamcolor screens are 50 pin LVDS IIRC as a result Zbooks up to gen 2 iirc need an eDP to 50pin LVDS converter to use Dreamcolor Screens

Additionally the dreamcolor screens used after the 2nd gen zbooks use a totally different screen that has a smaller color space

HP 8560w - Best AMD GPU Upgrade?

Thanks to everyone in this thread for their incredible work including AlienHack and ChanceJackson.

Most of the thread revolves around NVidia cards - probably because they are the most available and patchable.

For various reasons (ease of use in Linux) I want to upgrade the video card to the best performing AMD Card that will natively fit MXM 3.0a? - FirePro or Radeon.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I have spent hours searching for results but I am assuming that I am just not using the right key words or the results I am looking for do no exist.

I am committed to posting results if anyone can point me in the right direction. Thoughts?

There is info and clips of successful upgrades to:
    FirePro M4000
    FirePro M5100
    FirePro M5950
    FirePro М6100

for this laptop. If you manage to find M6100 and upgrade to it, would be very interested in the 3dmark "Fire Strike" test score.
