I'm now in the market for a workstation class laptop, so I was seeing what was out there. When I realized there's probably an Ivy Bridge update/refresh of the 8760w coming pretty soon, I tossed "HP Elitebook 8770w" into Google just to see if there had been any news yet.

~12,300 search results, the majority of them links to batteries and ac adapters, along with an occasional blogger theorizing about the 8770w.

I did come across this while I was skimming all the results just now:

    http://markmail.org/download.xqy?id=rmjdgpbvlg45p5zo&number=1

I honestly have not a clue what it is, but it lists this line:

    "[ 0.000000] DMI: Hewlett-Packard HP EliteBook 8770w/176C, BIOS 68IAV Ver. C.00 10/07/2011"

    and:

    "[ 284.673562] Hardware name: HP EliteBook 8770w"

Is it some sort of Linux / BIOS / startup log/dump? Seems like it may or may not have some useful information.

I saved a copy to PasteBin just in case the source link vanishes:

    HP Elitebook 8770w Linux dump - Pastebin.com

EDIT: found this 2nd link which I think explains where this dump came from:

    http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-usb/msg57902.html

EDIT2: Just pulling some random lines out of the mess that seem interesting:

    0.082218] CPU0: Genuine Intel(R) CPU @ 2.30GHz stepping 04
    [ 0.010100] ACPI: Core revision 20120111

    [ 0.461588] Brought up 8 CPUs
    [ 0.461592] Total of 8 processors activated (36718.80 BogoMIPS).

    [ 0.001000] Detected 2294.925 MHz processor.

I think there's more hardware info in there if someone knows how to read that stuff.

I think there will be a presentation of the 8770w soon (with Ivy Bridge), just wait a few more days after Ivy Bridge is official. But when will it be available? I guess this will take a few more months and if you live outside the US until autumn at least.

Certainly we know what CPUs will be offered. I assume they will continue to split dual and quad core models by RAM capacity. It appears that the 8470p has the same body as 8460p, so one can probably conclude that HP will keep the same body for the entire Elitebook line. This means similar choices regarding ODD/HDD.

I do wonder about screen options. It seems Intel is trying to push those up over the next few years. It would be cool to see something higher than 1080p, though I have my doubts (Apple will probably lead this charge, the 17" MBP refresh might be a leading indicator for the 8780w).

GPUs are unannounced. I'm sure Nvidia will offer 3 options. I hope HP goes back to the 17" class Firepro. The 8760w offered M5950, it should have been M8900. In both cases, we can get an idea of performance from the gaming versions. For Nvidia that is the 680M, AMD is 7970M.

How did Dell deal with their 10bit panel in relation to HD3000?

Except the battery life on the Dell kind of sucked.

As stated, there is no Optimus with the IPS panels since there is no 10-bit support. Optimus was only on models without the IPS panels for Dell, and HP didn't even bother to implement it.

I wonder if HP will bump the screen resolution to 2560x1600 on the display this time?

Besides the Ivy Bridge refresh (along with kitting it out with a large amount of RAM by default), the only notable upgrade I can really think of for this kind of machine would be a resolution bump. Wonder if they decided to actually do it, if it would cause a notable delay in the time it takes the refreshed model to hit the market?

They have that 2560x1400 resolution on their new Z1 all-in-one workstation model (27-inch).

Also, I just checked Google again, and I now see a reference to the 8770w model on HP's website:

HP EliteBook 8760w Mobile Workstation - HP EliteBook 8770w Mobile Workstation

It's just a small thing, but it's there immediately beneath the black upper area:

"You are here: Laptops & Tablets > EliteBook Mobile Workstation > HP EliteBook 8770w Mobile Workstation > HP EliteBook 8760w Mobile Workstation"

No, it's right where I said it would be. Centered on the upper portion of the page, immediately beneath the large upper black area. Just CTRL+F and search for 8770 if you're still overlooking it.

They will probably keep the same case for 8770w. Add Ivy Bridge, I haven't seen any Nvidia Quadro beyond 5010m yet but maybe it will come soon. Intel Thunderbolt might be a new feature.

What I really would like to see is that they drop this horrible chiclet keyboard they added in 8760w and replace it with something more similar to what they had previously. The keyboard on 8740w was nice. I really hate this chiclet trend that is infesting all brands.

Just watched the video, and looked at the pics. It striked me, that those picures and the video don´t show any design changes. It looks like the picture and the video show the old 8560w and 8760w.

    edit /

looks like the video and pictures are authentic.
the design of the elitebooks has not changed a bit as far as i can see now.

    here´s is a thread with a few pictures :

Looks like literally no change except for Ivy Bridge and a few more lower-end GPU options. Well, the 8760W was awesome to begin with (except for 1080p!) but this kinda blows.

Honestly, this was very expected. It was the same thing with 8730w and 8740w where 8740w was the same case but with the next year hardware. The case has a two year cycle before they change the design again. So next year we will probably see an update of the case.

Looking forward to see what's hiding behind the FirePro M4000 reference. Seems to be based on the HD 7000M series. Didn't manage to find more info though...
I hope it will be as good a surprise as the M7820.

The M4000 must be the 15" class card. It is offered in the 8570w. So once again, HP decides to skip the good Firpro card. Dell M6700 will once again the best value for non-CUDA users since they should offer whatever the Firepro version of 7970M is.

well, at least it has nearly the same layout. compared to my backlit 8560w keyboard it seems the enter-key has become a little smaller. don´t have a 8760w, so i don´t have a real comparison.

if that enter-key is really smaller i probably would not want that keyboard. Maybe it is just me, but when typing fast i do very often miss the enter-key. Instead i seem to hit the "7"-key from the numpad, before my finger is on the right spot for pressing "enter". this is quite a bit annoying.

    edit //
nevermind, i just saw that the 8770w and the 8760w share the same keyboard layout. And indeed the 8560w is a little bit different. It seems the keyboard of the 8770w is like the base unit from the old 8x60w-series.

The difference between the keyboard in picture 1 and 2 is that the keyboard in picture 1 has an American enter key layout and in picture 2 it has a European enter key layout.

Despite UK and US in practice share the language and alphabet, the enter key differs. I don't know the reason and history for this difference. German and Scandinavian keyboards also have the enter key like in picture 2.

I would assume that 8760w, 8560w, 8770w, 8570w all share the same part numbers when it comes to keyboards. Having the same parts saves HP money and it makes sense.

    Hi FoxWhere,

i was not talking about different language layouts. i meant the general keyboard layout - placement of keys, format, size...

i forgot to add a picture of the 8760w. i added another picture to the last post that shows the us-layout of the 8760w keyboard.

about the enter key, i guess that size and format of the keys on all language versions should be the same for the 8560w. haven´t yet seen a different keyboard on the 8560w than the one i have installed.

anyway, what we can clearly see is that the only changes for the 8770w seem to be the new QM77 chipset, new cpu and graphics options and new intel wireless adapter. Everything else should be the same compared to the 8x60w workstations.

I forgot to mention that the European enter key is annoyingly thin. If you look at older keyboards and full desktop keyboards, the enter key is much wider. On the 8770w they could actually have a bigger keyboard as there is plenty of space on the sides. You could easily have a bigger gap between the numerical keypad and the rest of the keyboard and you could also fit decent sized arrow keys.

normally on German keyboards e. g. the Enter key is bigger, so it really differs what language type the keyboard is.

Looking at photos, I have the clear impression they actually use the same keyboard for 8560w and 8760w, which is probably the reason why the 8760w keyboard is so crappy, being designed for a 15.6" workstation.

It's a business laptop not a consumer one. Generally they won't have the newest consumer ports like thunderbolt or even the dated HDMI (most business machines use displayport).

I thought so too, was wondering why The Verge wrote that new article. Maybe HP sent out a new press release when they were sending out all their other ones, yesterday?

Thought maybe yesterday was the first day they were available to purchase, like with the Spectre XT.

    NVIDIA Quadro K5000M (4 GB dedicated DDR5)
    NVIDIA Quadro K4000M (4 GB dedicated DDR5)
    NVIDIA Quadro K3000M (2 GB dedicated DDR5)

So K stands for Keplar I would assume, bascially GeForce 6-- series cards. I see nothing about the new Quadro cards on Nvidia home page though.

    My 8760w quickly got outdated.

It's time they bump the resolution to 2560x1600 on 17" models. They have managed to make a 5" HD screen so 2560x1600 on 17" shouldn't be a problem.

Looked at the Apple announcement about the macbook pro and they have a ridiculously highres display. Now what is stopping HP to bump the resolution as well on their EliteBook workstations?

They'll get that high res within the next year or two I expect. The high res display is nice but I think most people will be hard pressed to tell the difference, pretty sure the Elitebook's DC2 and Dell's Premiercolor displays trump the new MBP display in all other regards, and comes in at a cheaper price point too.

The only unforgivable sin is 16:9! The new MBP which.. pretty much seems to be designed for the mass market (despite the pro in the name) and seems to prioritise form over functionality in a huge number of ways, still comes with a 16:10 screen! I hope the new line of workstations returns to this scaling..

Returning to 16:10 will not happen and I'm surprised that Apple didn't go for this change as well. I think they made a deal with some LCD supplier so that they could still use 16:10. 16:10 screen was a much better size I think too, then the 17" was exactly so that a full keyboard with numerical keypad could be fitted instead of that dead space at the sides.

16:10 is better for pretty much everything a workstation user would use a workstation for. I know 16:10 is going the way of the dodo, but for Apple to keep it on their pro line (which is gimped in every other way) and HP and Dell to dump it, at least so soon, just leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

I know HP and Dell probably don't sell anywhere near as many workstations as Apple does MBPs, but the profit margin can't be THAT significantly affected for HP and Dell to dump it so quickly.

    Oh well... it's too bad.

Then where is it? Are they releasing it later? If so, what proof do you have?

Aww no thunderbolt... Even Dell upcoming Precision M6700 does not have thunderbolt, just too bad.

Is M4000 just a medium class graphic card? it is offered at 8570W too which in tradition 15.x" mobile workstation will not house a MXM 3.0b card.

Yes, the M4000 is a 15" class card, just like the Firepro offered on the 8760w.

The Quadro 4000M is rated at 100W which makes it suitable for 17" and over. If it is the Keplar Quadro 4000M, Quadro K4000M I think it is called, I've no idea what that one is rated at.

I think you mixed up the AMD FirePro M4000 and the NVIDIA Quadro K4000M ? (both will be available in the 8770w)
