Funny that WMP works perfectly well with LAV, while MPC does not. Here's my MPC output, no Aero. Messed with many configs, same deal - video stuttering in 80% of the cases, plus occasional tearing.

Keep Aero enabled (if you have more than one monitor connected and being used, things become a bit more complicated). Try change video renderer to EVR (not custom pres) in MPC-HC: View-> Options-> Output.

Even better: Download and install madVR on top, select it in MPC-HC and enable madVR's Smooth Motion option. This is something that no other software can do without messing with refresh rates.

It seem to have vsync on?

madvr is definitely something great to play with. (tinkering beware!)

Other than that, you can probably try pot player which should eat/handle anything fine.

I did keep it enabled (in fact, that was the default). I also tried EVR. No effect whatsoever on stuttering.

I will try madVR and report back.

Yes, vsync is on. Same with off. Same with all other vsync alternatives.

Does that both on the external display and on the DC (regardless of whether an external is connected or not).

Did you solve your video stuttering problem? Sure its down to software though if WMP remains smooth..
Did you try disabling nVIDIA powermizer? There is a tool out there you can google for, that makes a few minor changes to the registry. It cannot be disabled in the nVIDIA control panel, but it can be changed in the driver .inf before install. Makes a huge difference on DPC stuttering for me as I mentioned before.

    On another note altogether;
The FHD LED LCD I have is an AU Optronics Display AUO219D, and I find the picture very low quality. I can see grey vertical lines over the whole screen. Has been there since day once, different OSes, GPUs etc.

Wanted to know if anyone got these panels replaced under warranty, because I think its simply a bad batch of panels. No way those screens were hand picked for their great picture quality.
Did not want to hassle HP with it, but I did not really take notice of the difference until I used the panel for a day and noticed how badly the screen looks in comparison to say my old 8730w or my work laptop or on my Dell M4700 with a LG LP156WFC.

    Hi!

Yes, I did solve it eventually. Forgot how - as I also sold the 8770w in the meantime. :) I remember I played with the renderers... Got a Zbook 15 instead (needed something smaller).

As for the AOC display, I had the DC but I know the AOC as well. Poorer, indeed, than some alternatives. I know the 17" version of the LG Philips (from an M6600 and later an M6700) and it's clearly a better screen. Same goes for the ubiquitous CMO screen on the Precisions (and gameworthy Asus, MSIs, Clevos). That being said, I also find the AUO better than pretty much any other 17" out there (except for the aforesaid LGP and Chi-Meis and, of course, the newer IPSs).

Hi guys, concerning the monitor, i have the grey vertical lines too.
I already start a support ticket with hp in olrder to solve this.
I just bought this laptop used, in the past i was dell precision fanatic.
I Never experienced such bad laptop monitor on dells hi end machines.
Little question: with gta V coming in 10 days i would like to upgrade my video card with a gaming one.
Do you think i can install ge force gtx 970m/980m on 8770w?

I think you can. There is no whitelist for GPUs. I am running a Quadro K5100M in mine which is not standard and it works just fine. Should be the same PCB layout on the 880M & 9x0M card.
Obviously, you have to have the nVIDIA heatsink if you have the AMD M4000 now. Been considering buying the 980M myself, quite confident it will work without a hitch.

Feedee, please let me know what happens with that support case regarding your vertical lines. I have been considering raising a ticket as well because, why not. The screen is so annoying to look at. Simply bad panels.

Hey guys, I picket up a 8770w the other day second hand and have had a bit of an issue with the keyboard. Basically, several buttons don't work (left control, caps lock, esc, fn and dash key). Have reinstalled drivers to no avail. The esc key will no longer even let me enter the bios. But it definitely did the first day I bought the PC. Any thoughts on what might be going on here?

    Could be liquid damage.

If it's cola or similar with sugar, keys will get stuck later and then easy to spot. Coffee and alcohol can be told by smell. Altough knowing what was dropped on keyboard will not fix it, nothing will.

Get the service manual and take out the keyboard. Liquid damage is easily spotted from underneath and you'll also see if other components are damaged.

If there is actual signs of liquid damage, then it's time to take the whole computer apart and clean up the parts before they break.

Ah yep that thought had crossed my mind. Exactly how spill resistant are these keyboards supposed to be? That said, I have no recollection of anything being spilt.

I'll have a poke around inside the machine and see what can be seen.

I think it is totally dependent on luck.

Take the keyboard out first, it is fastest way to see if there is damage.

Well I swapped the CPU out today, but couldn't see any visible sign of damage to the keyboard. I suppose I'll just have to replace it!

If your laptop works okay with an extenal keyboard then it's pretty safe to assume keyboard is faulty.

If anyone else runs a RAID0 array on their 8770w let me know, because since I upgraded to the lastest BIOS F60 from F43 I cannot install an Windows/Linux on the array in legacy mode.
Only way to get the installation to proceed is to set the boot mode to UEFI mode. It will still boot an existing array you created before the BIOS upgrade, but reinstall not possible.

Or run the controller in RAID mode with no array and use the second drive on the controller as its accepted as a boot device.

Attempted setting up a RAID0 array as well on my 8740w with the latest BIOS, same problem.
Did all the usual to pinpoint the problem. Swapped drives, rebuilt the array, formatted and removed partitions in AHCI/IDE mode. Reset the BIOS to defaults etc.

Its not a Windows problem. Linux Mint also failed when attempting to build the grub boot loader in legacy boot mode.

Suspect they have ****ed up the latest BIOS revisions on the whole Elitebook line unless I am missing something here.
Might need to raise a ticket for the HP support lads.

EDIT: 16th of May, 2015. Raised a ticket with HP regarding this problem if someone else has the same problem. Feel free to PM me for progress.

Small info Dell AMD FirePro M6100 is not working in 8770W.

With the card in machine would not boot at all. No signs of life when the card was in. I did try pluging out both batteries but that did not do the trick.

Thanks, good to know. Was thinking about a M6100 before going for the K5100M.
If anyone wonders, I attempted to run a GeForce GTX 970 4Gb via the ExpressCard slot. Only had a solution allowing for Gen 1 connection, so 2.5Gb/s bandwidth.
Long story short: The performance is terrible, my K5100M does a much better job than the GTX 970 due to the limitation of the single lane ExpressCard to PCIe interface.
Not sure if I ever got the nVIDIAs' Optimus PCIe compression running, which in theory could give an big boost in speed.

There dies my dream to run Elite Dangerous perfectly with the Oculus Rift DK2 on the 8770w. Resource Extraction Fields are a less than stellar 30 fps experience even after overclocking the K5100M.

If anyone still wants to run an "eGPU" you must modify the ACPI table to allow the external card to use memory addressing above the 32-bit space unless you fancy 2Gb of RAM....
PM me for the modified file if you are attempting the same.

EDIT: I have read somewhere that only Generation 1 Intel i-platforms allows for ExpressCard slot and mini PCIe slots to be bridged. Can anyone confirm this? Otherwise I have a shot of getting this to work getting another solution with ExpressCard and mPCIe giving me 2 lanes which would possibly make it good enough to use.

FYI- the bluetooth in an 8770w has to be handled via the integrated HP module and will not work in an intel combo card.

Hi guys. I'm offered a good 8770w with 1 year remaining warranty and a Dell m6600 with no warranty and a bit cheaper. It looks like a no brainer, but I like the dell more - what do you think - is it worth it getting an older machine like the m6600 just because of the ability to switch off nvidia graphics card for more battery life?

So, my laptop started life as a 8760w and I upgraded the GPU to a Nvidia 680M. I have now upgraded the motherboard and a few daughter boards to become an 8770w with 3920XM cpu, along with my Nvidia 680M GPU.

I guess I am no longer welcome in the 8760w Lounge anymore. :)

Topic: 8770w Upgrading to Windows 10 (from Windows 7)

    Lessons learned:
Try to fully uninstall all HP ProtectTools prior to upgrading. You must un-install all related "ProtectTools" apps (e.g. encryption) prior to uninstalling the main ProtectTools app.
To get past Windows 10 installer preventing you from upgrading due to HP ProtectTools for Windows 7 still being installed. Hunt down the ProtectTools for Windows 7 version 8.0 and install it. Windows 10 will let you upgrade.
After upgrading to Windows 10, if your desktop flashes and then your Explorer.exe (desktop user session shell app) keeps crashing every 20 seconds, uninstall app "IDT Audio". Crashes will stop.
Once on Win10, go into Device Manager, and open each non-microsoft device driver and do a Driver Update via "Search Automatically".

Topic: Upgrading to Windows 10 with non-standard Nvidia GPU installed (e.g. Nvidia 680M)

If you need to edit Nvidia INF files prior to running Nvidia driver installation, you may need to take an extra step to install the latest Nvidia Windows 10 driver with your edited INF/ListDevices.txt files.

If installation fails, the Nvidia log will likely indicate the "hash" check on the INF file has failed due to Windows Driver Signature Enforcement.

    Solution:
    Open Command Prompt (Admin):
    c:\>bcdedit -set loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS
    c:\>bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING ON

    Reboot
Desktop right corner should read "Test Mode"

Run Nvidia installer with edited INF files
At alert pop-up "Windows can't verify the publisher of this driver"
    select, "Install this driver anyway"

Once you confirm your Nvidia driver appears correctly in Device Manager/Display Adapters/, turn Test Mode off
    Open Command Prompt (Admin):
    bcdedit -set loadoptions ENABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS
    bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING OFF

    Reboot

If your Nvidia driver gets replaced by the standard MS video driver later on, from doing things like "Scan for hardware changes", you can replace the installed Nvidia driver by doing the following:

    Device Manager\Display Adapters
Right click MS Video driver, select "Update Driver Software", then "Browse my computer for driver software". You may have to put your computer back into "Test Mode" first.

Leaving your computer in "Test Mode" is not a good idea because it allows viruses/trojans to easily install edited/replaced versions of your driver files, you know, just like you did. :)

Hey I'm new to the 8770w, after finding a good deal for one and absolutely falling in love with it I had to get it

After searching around I've seen some conflicting information and would love some help if possible.

Firstly I'd like to say I'm currently on the qm77 with the 3630qm and a Firepro m4000

    So i have 3 questions

    1. Can anyone give me some solid info about replacing the m4000 for something more fulfilling? I've seen varying info about jumping to the nividia series but if possible would like to jump to a higher spec Firepro card or just amd.

    2. This thing came with the 1600x900 screen, i know the part numbers for the fhd screen but am having issues locating any still around for ourchase. Has anyone else gone through upgrading this and know where I might find one? From my understanding the dc is out of the question do to connections.

    3. What kind of experience do you all have with replaced the supplied Intel wifi cards with an ad complaint model, is it worth the hassle or should i just jump to a usb adapter?

I understand that a lot of this info can be found throughout these pages, but much of it is conflicting(the gpu).

I do apologize in advance for the long post and thank you for any help I'm given

Hi, i can only answer to your question number 1, since my 8770w came with an M4000 as well, i bought an Nvidia K4100M and repalced it. You would need to get a new heatsink as well, since all these better cards are bigger than the m4000.
The results are amazing!, I only use the video card for gaming purposes, and i can tell you the 4gb on this card and all the power on it are making a difference.

Out of curiosity do you do anything else aside from gaming and if so how do you think it compares, what kind of temps are you seeing?

I do some programing and use several VMs, hence i have 32gb of RAM. Playing games for a couple of hours will get the video card up to 80°C and the CPU to 84°, but those are just peak temps, it usually goes from 70 to 78° on both the GPU and CPU.

I picked up a 8770w a couple of weeks ago and I love it. So much better then my the junk Sony Vaio I was using.

My only complaint is with the display. It's got the 1600x900 screen being powered by the AMD Firepro M4000, The screen colors seem like they're washed out, it doesn't get very bright and the anti-glare protection on the display makes it look like there's a thin film over the screen (it's really bad on anything with a white background).

I'm looking to replace the screen and was wondering how I would go about doing so. If I could get it up to 1920x1080 (can the Firepro M4000 even push 1080p) that would be fantastic, but I can live with 1600x900, as this is just a general computing device, not really trying to play very many games on it.

I'm assuming since it's a non Dreamcolor display, that it uses the 40 pin connector.

As long that is not Dreamcolor, you can change the screen with no problems at all,

Also can you take a photo of the screen? to see if its actually physically "color washed" rather than some AMD drivers settings (not judging them just saying that you or someone might had changed the settings and totally forgot about it) also take a screenshot of your amd Display settings.

also if you dont do heavy games you should actually change to 1080p screen, and check if the screen is 17 inches (i made the mistake with a 8760w before and i had to use a 15 inch screen until i got the 8770w)

Thanks. I don't know what I did, but I just restarted my computer, Windows pushed an update and now everything looks a lot better. The colors aren't as washed out and the screen is defintely brighter.

Thanks for the help. I ended up going with a 1080p glossy display and it looks fantastic. Even the guy who did the install said it looked fantastic.

    Hi guys,
    Quick question.
Using a 8770W with Windows 10 (1709). The left top click botton turns one click into many click. I've tried uninstalling the Synaptics driver - it fixes it (but loses the gesture, and advanced trackpad functions). When it restarts, Windows seems to download that incompatible mouse driver which multiple clicks again. Does anyone have a solution?

Just playing with Microsoft's hide update troubleshooter tool with limited success.

I bricked nvidia k3100m while flashing vbios. The thread is below with details.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...g-to-k3100m-in-hp-8770w.821630/#post-10781009

Can you provide suggestions for my problem as you have experience with K5100m. By the way, my HP 8770w is not with the dreamcolor display.

What should I do to flash original bios in this bricked card.

I have created backup of that vbios before messing, but I cant even blind flash now because the laptop wont boot at all with that card inside, previously it was working.

Also, what I should be doing after I get the original vbios. I flashed the dell vbios before, which gave me display in laptop but when installed the graphics driver directly from the nvidia without any bios modifications, the display after restart went crazy while loading windows 10 and 7 both ( I cant describe the exact term or description nor I have photos of that). But wrongly flashed another HP vbios which led me to this situation.

Also created a new thread. Can you please go through this too.

The AMD Firepro m6100 works on the Elitebook 8770w. The only problem is that the card is recognized as a AMD Radeon HD 8950m.
