    Hi,

I rececived the new caddy from newmodeus,
but if i install it, with the SSD hard drive, the machine goes very very slow, writing a file takes long time, and reading it also takes long time,

does this have any relation to TRIM, how to ensure that it supports TRIM or not

any recommendations how to overcome this slowness

Hello Nando4, I need your help regarding an issue am having with my 2510p.

My main 1.8" Zif drive broke, so I ordered a Drive caddy from NewModeus, and I installed it with a 120 gig sata drive. now i try to install windows 7, the setup runs smooth unless the first reboot then it craps out with errors and missing windows files and it cannot continue the windows setup.

Any idea on what I can do.

    Thank you.

Ensure the ZIF drive is disconnected. Jumper the caddy as master, delete any existing partitions on the 120GB HDD and reinstall Win7. If it still doesn't work then I'd suggest returning the newmodeus caddy in favor of the ebay Fenvi one. The ebay caddy functions better with a 2510P as described.

Yeah, I tried installing windows so many times. I did get a successful installation one time, and had a complete boot into windows but once I shutdown the computer and started it again, it crashed.

(ZIF Drive Completely out and Caddy set as Master and Recognized as Master)

is there any way to get integrated sdcardreader beyond 1-2mb/s?

its great for games becuase of the accestime ;) and not expensive using an sdcard.

but 1.5mb is too low for this.
just good enoguh to keep hdd spin down.

I was using the 2530P Card reader driver (Ricoh) which let me read my 8GB card where the 2510P driver wouldn't let me see anything 4GB or greater. I didn't benchmark to see how fast it was though. Perhaps give that a try?

Finally did my webcam install after having this thing for months. I went with tapping the finger print sensor, as I use the docking port daily.

It took a while, had to cut pins 5 and 6 out of the ribbon from CN11 (schematic p 29) then I had trouble finding power. I tried to tap the wires to the LED panel since they were close, but they didn't have enough juice, ended up copying Mike and tapping the dock connector for power.

Also, I kept my WWAN, as I think I want to use it, thus, I got rid of my latch and shaved the nubs down to fit the camera. I'm in the process of shaving more and trying to get the latch hole to line up with the camera.

BTW, I'm using a Ricoh RY5U870, that I believe is from a dv2000. This came with the wiring from the origninal notebook, which made this a lot easier.

Shaved the bezel down to line up the latch hole with the camera, and added a clear plastic thumbtack behind the screw hole so that the LED would show through.

That's a passive adapter with no sata-to-pata bridge, so no it cannot be used in a 2510P.

As for SSDs, I'd suggest going a low power EWS720-based native PATA units OR use a optical bay caddy to host a 2.5" SATA SSD. ZIF SSD prices are a lot cheaper than when this thread started.

    as i'd go for 60gb i'd have 120/65 read/write.

no chance to obtain industrial ssd with 120/110 r/w

even if some reliable german or european reseller would sell it, it is still slc and hterefore very very expensive.

the mx nano is good comparing price and speed ;) i don't think it would be possible to have 120/110 especially 110 in write on hp compaq 2510p!

My HP 2710p is always running quietly and without noticeable temp on the keyboard. Now I am trying to tweak my lap.

edited--to the "quiet" post in this thread.

    hi there,

great forum, great thread. altough I have no 2510p i think i am nearly welcome here with my nc2400. ;)

for all who are thinking about the bad hdd speed of the 1.8" ZIF: better than a ram upgrade, buy a renice K3E - already the 64GB version is fast enough to start windows 7 ultimate in less than 30 secs on the old nc2400 - really, it's no comparison to the hdd!
I've also tried the MX nano drive, bad idea, as they have changed pin assignement I could not get them successfully running in my nc2400, I think it also will not work in the 2510p series, does it?

another point which I am searching for: has anybody already seen a keyboard mod with backlight on the 2510p / nc2400? i always use my notebook in the evening hours and I do not like typing without knowing what I am hitting ... :-/

    Thanks. ;)

Congratulations on the Renice K3E SSD. That SSD gives a nc2400/2510P plenty of legs to continue as a Win7 machine.

AFAIK, the 2510P/2530P/2540P never had a backlit keyboard. The solution HP implemented starting with the 2530P was a nightlight mounted on top of the LCD bezel that pops out and lights the keyboard. Works well on the 2530P. Not sure if it is possible to mod in a 2530P LCD in place of the one your nc2400 uses. Maybe just changing your background to be white would be a inexpensive 'night light' alternative?

If contemplating a proper bezel mounted night-light mod then I'd suggest just do a complete system update to a 2530P. It's still light-and-nimble like the nc2400/2510P but gets some tech improvements like 45nm C2D, expresscard slot, sata storage subsystem while keeping the great keyboard. I'd go so far as to say it was HP's best ultraportable implementation to date.

    hi nando4,

upgrading to another model is no option for me, I've just paid for the nc2400, then I doubled the price with the SSD which I cannot use in 2530p.
beside that I do not like to throw away working things. ;)

the white background at PCD is a nice idea, but normally the display does not look to the keyboard, it is used with a >90° angle - so the keyboard is still not viewable. :-/
it's hard to find, I tought maybe someone knows how to best practice a backlight for a no-backlight keyboard. I already tought about just plaicing some LED-stripes below the keys and / or additionally cut out the letters of the keys, but I do not know if this is possible. Has ever anybody seen something like that?

Hey guys. I love this forum for the HP 2510. So much great information on here.

Well I seem to be one of the rare ones to have the HP 2510P with the 1.8 L7700 Core 2 Duo processor. I got the laptop from Sweden 2 1/2 years ago, when I was there on holiday.

I want to upgrade my hard drive. I currently have the slow, Toshiba MK8009gal 80 GB hard drive.

I saw a couple of hard drives on Ebay and I found a Toshiba MK1634gal, 160 GB hard drive. Has anyone tested this drive on their HP 2510p? I have tried to search for hours/days on whether it is compatible, with no issues for the HP 2510p, but I cannot find ANYTHING on it. I saw somewhere that the drive might have an apple ipod hard drive protection? I am not sure what that means. If I get a brand new, unformatted MK1634gal, will this work? Even if the Toshiba MK1634gal hard drive has the little apple symbol on it?

Please let me know if anyone has tried this hard drive out or any issues using it. Thanks so much.

i heard of problems while using linux and a mx nano in 2510p.

linux should sometimes kill one or two partitions.

anyone can confirm this? or is mx nano safe to use (i plan windows XP! and Mageia Linux (mandriva) as now with 2.5" hdd.

Haven't seen a 160GB MK1634GAL tested on a 2510P but it does work on a MBA, also with a ICH8M I/O subsystem. Googling MK1634gal also does show quite a few listings claiming compatibility with Dell D420/D430 and HP 2510P/2710P. This is unlike the 240GB MK2431GAH which has an incompatible block size as described. Please do advise your progress if you go down this path. These drives were used in ipods so could be an inexpensive and readily available way to extend the 1.8" drive capacity if purchased s/h on ebay.

Request: benchmarks of a L7700 2510P to complete the profile

If you are running Win7, would you mind installing the modded bios, engaging dual-IDA ([email protected]) and doing WEI benchmarks like these? It would be great to include a L7700 entry on the first page just so could have a complete profile of these systems.

You could consider setFSB overclocking your 2510P also to see how far it can go. Eg: when I did the 200Mhz_bclk mod, I was able to get 240Mhz going on my U7600 (1.44Ghz), which on a L7700+dual-IDA configuration would max out at 2.4Ghz (!!). No guarantees that overclock is possible since the CPU has it's internal limits and the OC needs to operate under 100 degrees at full load which might be a little challenging for the 2510P cooling system.

    Hello,
I'm a fresh owner of HP 2510p and I must say it is an excellent laptop. I had bios v F.05 and wanted to see new features with modded F.10. So, the flashing was OK, but I've lost IDA support in RMClock and it blocked my wireless card, because it was deactivated and now the bios doesn't offer activation. So I want to install F.05 over F.10, but the flash utility just say "This is an older version of BIOS which is not compatible with your system configuration". So is there any way how can I downgrade the bios back to F.05? I REALLY need it!

    Thank you!

Congratulations on your acquisition. The 2510P is an excellent notebook that can be had for very little $$ on ebay these days. I wish HP made their latest 2560P as small and light as the 2510P is.

There might be ways using TTAV134's modded hpqflash or using emergency recovery with a floppy drive to go back to F.05 but I would not recommend it. Instead, suggest use the unwhitelisted, modded F.10 2510P bios from here to regain those features plus the faster dual-IDA CPU overclock. I recommend using Throttlestop instead of rmclock.

Hiya. Sorry I took a while to reply back. Had gone abroad for work and just now was able to respond back. I have done a WEI refreshed, after doing the Dual-IDA and the modified bios. I am including a picture of the WEI results.

I will definitely be trying the Toshiba MK1634GAL 160 GB hard drive in the near future (next month). I definitely do have the ICH8/M subsystem that you had said. What subsystem do you have on your HP 2510p?

Well after lugging around my HP Elitebook 8440w for a year, I've decided to go back to my old 2510p and use it as my mobile secondary laptop.

The laptop is physically in great shape but the slower speed is a problem. Ideally, I'd like to be able to run Windows 7 on it (or Ubuntu if possible) but I've tried installing Windows 7 in the past and it ran super slowly. If possible, I'd really like to be able to run HD flash videos on it as well.

So I was wondering what upgrade would be best bang for my buck if I have around $200 to spend. I was consider an upgrade to either 4GB of RAM or to a RunCore Pro IV 1.8" PATA 64GB SSD which do you guys recommend?

Currently, my 2510p is spec'ed at:

    C2D U7600 @1.2 GHz
    2GB DDR2 RAM
    100GB PATA Toshiba Hard Drive
    Windows XP

Any help is greatly appreciated and I have to say, this 2510p community is amazing.

Best bang-per-buck would be to sell the 2510P for ~$130 on ebay and buy a 2530P for ~$230-$270. A 2530P is as small/light as a 2510P but has 2 ram slots so 4GB RAM upgrade is cheaper, SATA drive subsystem, webcam, nightlight, has considerably better battery life and performance (can be OCed too).

I consider the 2530P to be HP's finest ultraportable to date and it makes an incredible s/h bargain. Consider my 2530P setup here to see it's awesome performance potential. A L9600 overclocked 2530P gets very near i7-640LM 2540P performance for less than half the price, with a better keyboard and less weight.

If still want to upgrade the 2510P then I'd suggest:

    * 200Mhz_bclk mod to improve X3100 iGPU performance
    * US$20 ebay 9.5mm sata-to-pata caddy + cheap 2.5" SSD you could reuse in an upgrade system + sell 2510P optical drive OR
    * US$125 Supertalent ZT2 60GB ZIF SSD so can have the ODD + better battery life.

    Hi Nando,

I've managed to get my hands on 4 Hp 2510p laptops in good-mint condition.

I'm planning to do a DIY project on them- custom painting the "grey" parts of the laptop a different bright color with a glossy finish.

Upon looking at the disassembly instructions, it seems the grey touchpad "panel" under the keyboard seems built into the frame.

Any idea whether this panel can be removed?
I've attached a screenshot below to assist.

    Many thanks,
    Joel

The touchpanel is molded on the frame so cannot be removed on a 2510P. A 2530P does allow it to be separated but I believe the top cover is not a compatible fit with a 2530P.

Please do post your resultant color/finish mods. Other 2510P owners may be inspired to do the same.

Understood, thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
I haven't had the chance to physically open the laptop up yet, so I'll proceed with that this week and see if I can work around it.

I will definitely post my results once completed.

Expect to hear back from me relatively soon.

    Hello,

i have a nc2400 and looking for a ssd solution for under 100 bucks.
    I own already a newmodeus PATA-SATA Caddy so i tried a Crucial m4 64GB SSD.

It works but the system (Win7 x86) hangs every 2-3 seconds for a short moment.
The installation is clean up to the current chipset drivers.
But also without them the problem occurs.
The caddy works fine with a harddisk and also the ssd has no error because in another sys its works well.

So i think its a incompatibility problem.

Has anyone of you a 2.5" Sata SSD with the newmodeus caddy in use?
Which one can you recommend me?

    Thank you,
    best regards

    Martin

This problem has been documented in the Comparison: ebay versus newmodeus 9.5mm sata-to-pata and pata caddy.

The ebay caddy does not require TRIM to be disabled.

    @nando4
    Thank you so much!

I disabled trim and wooow the freezes are gone.
Enclosed two benches... not outstanding but of course really a big difference to the 4200rpm zif harddisk.

So the ebay fenvi caddy is the solution when i will have trim support.

But is there ever a possibility for trim on the old nc2400?
It has a 82801GBM (ICH7-M)... ATA6 (right?) so no trim support (right?).

So maybe i should keep my caddy, forget trim and look for a ssd with a good garbage collection?!
A sandforce ssd should work fine without trim - or has someone another clue?

Can you run a CrystalDiskMark bench on your installation? The I can include it at the bottom of http://forum.notebookreview.com/sol...-1-8-zif-pata-ssds-available.html#post6861746 .

An ebay caddy with Marvell sata-to-pata chip will accept and pass the TRIM command to your SSD. It worked on a 2510P and will work on a NC2400 too. The newmodeus' caddy uses a Sunplus sata-to-pata chip and cannot pass TRIM as noted. It's a shame because the newmodeus caddy otherwise has the best chassis construction and a master/slave jumper. If you want to keep the newmodeus caddy then please schedule a Tony Trim now and again to ensure write performance doesn't deteriorate.

If you do get a ebay caddy, can I suggest getting the Fenvi 9.5mm sata-to-pata unit with the metal construction and swappable faceplate?

    Sure - is attached below.
    Thanks again for your support!

Sure the chipset of the nc2400 is not to old to forward the trim command?

Hmmm yea if there a simple "one klick solution" like a wiper.exe then it would be a option but so... not really - i think i go for the ebay caddy.

    Its this one - right?

Very good result there from your 64GB Crucial M4 (Marvell 9174). The NC2400's ICH7M I/O controller will simply pass the ATA TRIM command to the sata-to-pata bridge for processing.

Yes, that is the one. Two unanswered questions I have about the Fenvi caddy that would be useful to 2510P/NC2400 owners to know:

    1) Can the NC2400/2510P ODD faceplate be swapped over onto it?

    2) Is it possible to do a slave_mod &? This would be helpful to those that would want to run a 1.8" ZIF HDD/SSD (master) + 2.5" SSD/HDD for example.

Perhaps you could investigate these if you get the Fenvi ebay caddy?

I just installed the newmodeus PATA caddy with an old 128GB SSD (TS128GSSD25-M) and removed the 1.8 hard drive. The BIOS doesn't recognize the SSD at all, telling me there's no drive.

I hope someone here has an idea what to do about it.

According to the TS128GSSD25-M manual, it has a master, slave and cable select jumper setting. Try each one until one results in the bios seeing the drive. If no luck then reconnect the 1.8" ZIF HDD (master) and re-do jumper tests. If still no go then test the drive in a native 2.5" PATA system to ensure it is not faulty.

I hope you can get it working so can do some benchmarks. It would be the first reported 2.5" PATA SSD via ODD caddy 2510P installation.

I know that the drive itself works, I used it in an nx6125. It was jumpered as master when I put it in the caddy. I'll try your other suggestions, hopefully it'll work then.

    EDIT:
I put the jumper on cable select, after which the SSD shows up as DVD drive in the boot device selector. It correctly loads the Ubuntu I had previously installed on it.
I had set it as master, because someone on this thread mentioned writing speed restrictions if it's set as slave.

    EDIT (again):
I just played around with it, set it as master again and suddenly it shows up in the BIOS as primary hard drive. Don't know how that happened. Magic? It works now, anyway. Thanks for your help, Nando.

Good stuff. Maybe the jumper wasn't correctly seated? Anyway, can you post a crystaldiskmark bench result of it plus a listing of any additional enhancements you've done to your 2510P so I can add an entry on the first page? It would be the first 2.5" PATA SSD entry :) If you don't want to load Windows to do it, then can just install the 1.8" ZIF HDD (master) and the 2.5" PATA SSD as slave and run benchmarks. Recommend do the slave write_uncapping steps to ensure maximum write performance is reported (supposedly it's a 80/30 drive, so may not even be necessary?).

Here you go. Not very spectacular, I admit, but still noticably faster than the HDD.

No other tweaks yet; I thought I'd hold off on those for a while, get used to my new laptop first ;)

    Hello again,
the 2510p works very well although there is one thing which holds me back. It's the graphics card. No, I'm not talking about performace, it's about DX configuration. The Intel GMA Control panel lacks DirectX setting (only OpenGL) and I don't know any other software that can configure DirectX setting on Intel GMAs (preferably ZBuffer bit-depth and Lightmap resolution).
Here's the thing: I'm trying to run DX 8.0a game and instead of transparent textures I get areas filled with black (when using color overlay for example night vision, the screen became pitch black). I found later that this problem is with most DX 7 and 8 games.
    I tried almost everything:
    * reinstalled drivers from 4820 all the way up to 5016 (4820, 4916, 4990, 5016, 5032, 5218)
    * used modded drivers
    * downgraded Video BIOS
    * downgraded DirectX to 8.1 then upgrading to 10
    * changed HWVP to SWVP
    * changed registry values on "igfx" key
    * upgrade/downgrade BIOS
    * debug over 3DAnalyzer and Swiftshader
    * used drivers without T&L support
    * used desktop drivers (G33, G31 chipsets)
    * used intel 4xxx hacked drivers
    * tried to use Extreme (HD) driver and Master (HD) driver - they don't work with XP
    * tried to copy OpenGL settings from working system (equipped with GMA3100)
    * disable all power saving settings
    * reinstalled Win XP
    * and tried to modify the amount of allocated memory

Yet still, the problem is there. DX 9 based games are OK (ex. CS: Source). Any SLIGHTEST idea how to solve this will be greatly appreciated.
    OS: Windows XP SP3

Thank you and apologize for the way how it's written.

Edit: OS reinstall didn't solve the problem
