    That's weird.

    Maybe your heatsink is broken?

Here are temps on my HP8710p:

How can the CPU be undervolted on the 8710w? NHC doesn't work on Win7 x64...

    No, it's in normal state.

I have few virtual machines running and flash video (720p) and few other things.

Dropped ThrottleStop, and using RMClock now, with 2 pstates: SLFM [email protected] and [email protected] (tried 1.175v but bsod).

Much better than before but it's still absurd that the minimum temperature it has reached in idle is 49°. Thats a HUGE lot...

Stress test with Orthos as always ends up at 99° and laptop shuts down.

What bothers me is that when load increases, it makes HUGE jumps in temperature (from 50° all the way to 80 in a fraction of a second). Is this even possible?

it depends on what kind of load you've got, but yes it's not normal.

normally temperature increases via small portion.

but NVidia videochips in this notebboks are very hot even in idle i've got 55-60 Celsius.

No, well, the gpu is fine. 45-50° maximum in idle, and very stable.
It's the CPU that has huge temperature issues. I am starting to wonder if the heatsink actually has issues and might need to be replaced. Problem is where the hell am I supposed to find a replacement heatsink for a 6 years old laptop?

I was also thinking of upgrading to the T9500, which runs cooler, but at this point I doubt it would make much of a difference...

    hp 8710 heatsink | eBay

you can always buy from eBay.

dunno, read about T9500, it might even have lower energy consumption, not sure though.

I found one in Europe, but it's not new, it has been taken from another 8710w:
    HP COMPAQ 8710w CPU HEATSINK - AT00X000100 | eBay

Oh, it does. Reviews state that it runs around 5° cooler than a T7700, which would bring it to ~45° in Idle.

    But meh, 100€ ($140)...

At this point I'd take the laptop open and check what the thermal paste looks like on the CPU. Is it connecting properly? Sounds like the heatsink could have bent a little... It happens so easily (I have my uncle's Asus 17" under my table, missed one screw and killed the heatsink with one move... :D Now looking for replacement).

As I've written above, I have taken it apart, cleaned everything and changed the thermal paste on cpu, gpu and chipset. It has dropped temperatures quite a bit, but they are still absurdly high.

Check plugins you've got enabled in Chrome, I've seen such thing on my laptop on some buggy sites with flash (e.g. some pr0n sites :D).

Also update graphics drivers from nvidia.com (they now have for mobile chipsets updated drivers) and update flash player as well.

That's the point, take it apart and look at the thermal paste. Is there a perfect image of the CPU or only half or a quarter of it? Temperature rising that fast could indicate a bad contact.

If only one corner or one end of the CPU touches heatsink well, that should be visible on the thermal paste. Like running vs. walking on wet sand or mud, your feet leave different marks.

    Oh.
I'm out of thermal paste atm, so I can't remove it now. Later on I'm gonna buy another syringe of Arctic Silver 5 and repaste again.

And I appear to have ed up something, because I keep getting BSOD 0x50 today...

Anyone ever figure out a solution/workaround to the Samsung SSD and 8710w/8510w issue? I purchased a new 840 EVO 120GB SSD today, and if I'm going to encounter these issues with my 8510w I'll just throw the SSD into my Dell E6400.

what's the issue you're getting? get intel 520 or intel 530 they have nice firmware and its compatable with old BIOS/notebook models.

I haven't encountered any issues thus far as the SSD isn't installed yet, the Samsung SSD issues were posted in Posts #34 - #42 earlier in this thread, I was just curious if there was ever a solution to that specific issue as I would like to avoid it if I'm going to experience those issues down the road.

Can I ask other current owners to run Intel Burn In Test with HWmonitor/ CoreTemp showing temperatures and post a screenshot, please?

I need to establish a baseline for temperatures, to properly see if my heatsink is really broken or not, since buying another one would be quite a problem from Europe.

Mine never goes over 95 degrees Celsius on stock heatsink and thermal compound, probably going to move to a 45nm based Core 2 to drop the temps

What kind of temp issues are you having?

I replaced my T7500 that was always at 80c with a T8100 and undervolted to 1.075v and now I stay below 60c at 100% load for 2 hours. I thought my heatsink was broken as well as my CPU Temps in AIDA64 and HWMonitor are always 10c above the core temps, but everything runs fine and it doesn't get blistering hot like the T7500 did.

EDIT: I also stopped using AS5 on the CPU/GPU and started using Shin Etsu X23-7783D. This too made a difference.

Does anyone know how thick are the default thermal pads on the heatsink? I want to change them with new ones, but not sure which to buy, since they're available in 0.5mm, 1mm and 1.5mm thickness...

I'm using copper pads, for MB chip I use 2 copper pads each 0.8mm thick, so 1.5mm would do it.

The only reason I wanted to "upgrade" was to help with the overheating issues. I tried Linux Mint 15 and the temperatures were quite a bit lower than with 7x64, so I was wondering if Win8 would have the same benefit.

I have a t9300 coming tomorrow, to replace the T7700. Should help with temps. The temperatures on the 3600m are unsolvable, even with the double heatpipe. It's a known issue that it stays at 40° in idle and goes up to 80-90°C in full load.
Still, I want to know why the temperatures are a lot lower in Linux compared to Windows 7x64...

Do you still get any BSODs? I recently acquired an 8710W with 3600M, it seemed to run fine with the 331.65 driver and GPU locked at P10 at first... then I had a large windows update install to complete on reboot, and it couldn't reach the desktop fast enough to launch the power saver. Got stuck in a BSOD loop :(

Back on 198.05 for now which is stable on its own, but I guess there will be a performance hit.
