I put system - Windows Vista - into empty SSD

I saw a Ebay seller, who erote MZUPA is not good for HP 2530p, but did not wrote any additional details.

Important Be carefull running a SSD with XP or XP-professional

I have 5 month experience in running the following SSD in the EB2530p:

Lenovo (Toshiba OEM) THNS128GG4BAAA 128GB Solid State Drive

This SSD does not work well as it has no TRIM function and also no
tool exists to run TRIM manualy. I had two intense helpdesk sessions
to solve the upcoming problems. Problems popped up firstly after 3 month.
Multiple bluescreen occured. The SSD had only about 10 GB free storage.
So we run a repair, I cleaned up and defragmented what shouldn't realy be necessary. Now two month later same situation with almost 20 GB free
space. Switching back to an old image with the old Samsung HS122JF, the
NB runs slow and save without any problems. As second external USB Disk, the Toshiba runs without problem.

So my explanation is, that the latency of the SSD without trim is to long for beeing run as system disk.

I'm now thinking about switching to Windows 7 and start a second try with an SSD which supports TRIM.

With XP I would recommend at least a manual TRIM all two weeks.

Has anyone expierence with Windows 7 on the EB2530p in 64 bit mode?

    Freddy

Yes. Win7 64-bit runs great with a 2530P. The 64-bit version was giving about 3.87GB of accessible RAM with 4GB installed. The 32-bit version gives only 3GB accessible. With 8GB installed the 32-bit version would still only give 3GB accessible. So with 4 or 8GB installed it is recommended to run 64-bit Win7.

Also if you are running a SSD which cannot do TRIM properly then it's a good idea to disable TRIM. To do that go to the command prompt and type:
    Code:
    fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 1

    Thank you Nando4

As I am a newbie in those issues.
Do you think with dissabeling I might try to test the Toshiba again?
What is different, when dissabeling TRIM?

    Regards Freddy

I would only run a ssd with win7. It sets the alignment right and supports ssds much better than xp.

Hi there, folks! I've never posted, but, have been lurking/learning here as I share a passion for my Elitebook 2530p! I have a perfectly good 9-cell battery (oem) for mine that I would like to know if anyone would be interested in a possible swap? My 9-cell in exchange for a 6-cell in good shape? Must be oem ... Thanks to all posters for their invaluable help here ... I LOVE this place :)

In re: screen brightness too low? Has your ambient light sensor become enabled without you knowing? I know on mine if I use the ambient light sensor the screen is always too darn dim. I use an older ProBook at work with the ambient light sensor and it does the same thing.

Have you checked to see if your ambient light sensor is active ... I've found that function to be worthless on multiple Hp notebooks! ... either that, or my eyes are just getting way too old ... :)

I just received my laptop and sadly it isn't a 6 cell, sorry! And I do not use ambient light for any of my HP laptops (Elite book 8460p + Elitebook 2530p)

My laptop has the F.12 bios, is it safe to do the modded bios? Do i have to be on F.13 to update?

... Maybe someone else that reads this would be interested in a 9-cell for 6-cell swap? I just would rather have two 6's than a 6 and a 9 (the "bump" bothers me?) - I'm just not keen on going thru selling the 9 on ebay, then buying a 6

... on the other bios question ... I think that is covered pretty extensively by others, certainly more qualified than me (lol), earlier in this thread?

I try other Samsung SSD with HP2530p
MMCRE28G8MXP-0VBH1 is originally in Lenovo notebooks.
The SSD speed is a bit slower than MZUPA, but it works well. (My 2530p always freezes with MZUPA)
MMRCE has not got TRIM with default firmware, but there is unofficial way to TRim support.

    MMRCE speed:

Hello, I have problems with my Elitebook 2530p. I have two 2gb ddr2-800 memory in it. there he runs easily. if I substitute a memory with 4gb dd2-800 memory, I have graphics problems. these are both Samsung memory.
Is this able to do elitebook 2530p no different memories?

Try swapping the modules. An ebay advertiser had problems if ran one RAM module in the rear slot; it needed to be in the slot under the keyboard. Perhaps try putting the 4GB one into that slot as it appears to be higher priority? I ram a 2GB + 1GB flex-memory arrangement without any graphics problems.

When I restart my HP 2530p, it hangs and I get a black screen after the bios splash screen loads. Any ideas? Also, everything seems to be slow and sluggish on the laptop - running Windows 7 ultimate with 2 gigs of ram. I just ordered another 2 gigs of ram to see if it will help. Do you think it might be the hard drive problem? I believe it's running at 5400 rpm. When i a lot of small tasks at a fast rate such as opening the start button and trying to click an icon extremely fast, the computer will hang for some seconds..

Also, is there a way to do the overclock and still have the computer manage the the cpu frequency? I would like to have decent battery life while have the ability for the computer, itself, to overclock the dual-ida if it feels the need to have the extra juice.

Use Throttlestop to setup a DC and AC profile. I ran a L9400 at [email protected] (DC) and [email protected](AC) dual-IDA. Throttlestop has a power save option that would drop the FSB to half and run it at x6 (shows as x3). Was idling at 5.2W with a 2.5" HDD in a caddy. Was getting 5-6hrs of real battery life websurfing with a 6-cell as measured by BatteryBar. Adding a 93Whr 9-cell and would get double that.

Consider too I was able to TME-unlock the PLL and overclock the L9400 to 2.6Ghz on AC. Was humming along very nicely then.

Recently got a 2530p & 128GB SSD and its up and working with Win7 x64. There is a WWAN module installed but there doesn't appear to be any drivers installed or an unrecognised device so I think there is some work to do on this (not a big deal though as I use my Android phone for tethering). The Webcam device is causing me some issues though. Under Windows device manager it appears under Imaging devices as a 'HP Webcam [2 MP]'. However after a while it disappears and then appears under USB as an unknown device? The device status says 'Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)'
It could be faulty (PC was purchased used) or it could be a dodgy connection?

    Hi Guys,
I have recently bought from a french "ebay like" website a hp 2530P L9400 with 4gb memory in perfect condition but without hard drive (200$), I have ordered a 64GB Bullet Proof 1.8" microSATA SSD (90$), a hard drive cage caddy with USB 492574-001 (60$) to use my 320go from my previous laptop.
While waiting for these to arrive I was playing with the notebook, ran ubuntu on a usb drive, everything is working beautifully !
Then I went in the bios to see the settings and what a surprise "bios administrator password" what a big disappointment !

So I have 1 question for you, when I will plug the SSD in will I need this password for anything ? I have removed the RTC battery last night for about 30 minutes, no changes at all.
I am so upset ! Will I a be able to use my ssd or the 2.5" SATA hdd in the caddy ?

2510P stored the password on the flash eeprom. The easiest workaround on those was to boot a system without password protection, going through motions to set a password. Before hitting the final [ENTER], you swap the 'protected' bios eeprom. Then you swap them back, boot up, enter the newly set password, then set it to be [none]/cleared. Problem solved BUT you need two 2510P's handy to do it.

Several 2530P systems I viewed had socketted bios chiips in the 1.8" drive bay, and a few didn't. If yours has one then consider above fix. If it's still under warranty then can ask HP for assistance. They could probably assist if you don't have warranty but expect to pay.

You can see if the biosconfigutility can alter any settings in the current password-protected state.

Hi! Any tips for the 5.2 W power compsumption guide for Xp? Is it possible to adjust the same variables? I recall my 2530p behaved much cooler with Xp as Windows 7 has more hard drive activity (almost continuous). What do you guys recomend? I want to use linux as my main OS so I was wondering if I can adjust similar variables to get a lower power compsumption & undervolting in linux.

User Avlan got his P9400-2.4 Dell E4300 down to 6W idle within Arch Linux using the same steps here. As for XP I don't use it but should be able to get it to a very low idle power state. Main contributors getting there are disabling LAN + other unnecessary devices in bios, enable AHCI link power management, set 4500MHD + wifi driver to max power savings, use Throttlestop to run SuperLFM 'power saver' mode.

You may want to try to reattach the webcam wiring to see if can get it to stay recognised. It's a USB device. Wouldn't be hard to swap with another.

As for your WWAN card, I'd suggest if it's not a 2530P whitelisted one then use the non-whitelist modded bios and if necessary isolate pin 20 on the WWAN card with a tiny bit of cellophane tape to force detection. A 2530P that had a HP UN2400 designed just for it even required that I isolate pin 20 to get it detected.

It is a HP un2400 WWAN module so it should be recognised without the modded BIOS. However I have updated the BIOS with the modified F.13 BIOS. In the BIOS setup it displays the WWAN and it is enabled.

As for the Webcam, it is recognised by Windows and the drivers are loaded. When an application attempts to access it the LED doesn't turn on (I assume the LED above the camera 'eye' should turn on when the camera is activated?). I have searched for how to replace the camera but I can't find a description of how to do it. I have the service guide but it isn't clear. I have some spare HP laptops that I can butcher parts from (6735s and 6930p) so if anyone knows if they are compatible?

OK, so fixed the WWAN module (installed HP Wireless Assistant and enabled it....). As for the Webcam I think its probably faulty. Google search keeps coming up with Webcam firmware although I can't seem to find any specific for this Webcam. At the moment it is an unknown USB device, however if I shutdown and then restart it will be recognised although if I try and use it (via some freeware Webcam software, Windows Live Messenger or Facebook) it causes the app to freeze and then it eventually goes back to an unknown USB device. Strangely if I just reboot it still appears as an unknown USB device.

    The device ID is 'USB\VID_04F2&PID_B082'

    Any other ideas?

Have you tried undervolting? I have 47°C for mine under windows 7. You should try nando4's guide to lower power compsumption in the first page!

Also, I dont think it will cause damage but the noise the machine produces its uncomformatable for me at those temps.

2530p runs now with new Setup under Win7 and retry of the Toshiba SSD.

I have a Samsung SSD drive from Lenovo laptop (MMCQE28G8MUP-0VA) in my 2530p and its running OK as far as I can tell. I have checked and the firmware that is installed is VAM08L1Q but I have discovered there is a later release of the firmware (VAM0DL1Q).

Solid State Drive firmware update utility (Bootable ISO) - ThinkPad

I have downloaded the firmware but it is part of a Lenovo 'pack' of SSD firmware in an ISO package. I have created a bootable USB drive and the 2530p boots OK and the utility runs OK but fails to 'see' the drive to update the firmware.
I have searched and can't find this firmware in an alternative format. Does anyone know how I can update the firmware?

    Thanks, Andy

Try switching the SATA mode from AHCI to IDE in the bios. Often these firmware update tools require legacy IDE mode to find the drive.

Yep, already tried that. Curiously in AHCI mode it says 'Searching for ATA device ...' for a while and then says no drive to update. In IDE mode it almost immediately says no drive to update.
Seems a bit of a pain if I need a Lenovo laptop to transfer the drive into to perform the update :(

Can someone who has the integrated camera in their 2530p confirm the USB device ID for me?

    USB\VID_04F2&PID_B082

I just want to confirm that the one in mine hasn't had a bad/wrong firmware flash and that's why it isn't working. I don't think it is; I think it is just a faulty webcam.

    Cheers

Yes. I downloaded the driver on HP's website, however it was already installed as part of the Windows 7 installation. I also booted a live Ubuntu CD and this behaves the same when you try and access the webcam. I have exhausted all avenues and this is probably faulty - either the webcam, the cable or something on the motherboard.
The only other (remote...) possibility is that the previous owner attempted to update the firmware on the Webcam but somehow managed to install the wrong firmware. I know I am grasping at straws a bit here but replacing parts will probably get expensive with me not knowing exactly which part to replace....

My friend had similar issue with dv6000 series webcam. It felt like cable issue, as computer would make device connected/disconnected sounds every now and then.

I checked all the cables, didn't help. Webcam stays as unknown usb device. Then I took webcam cable from another computer, didn't help. I replaced the camera unit too, no help. Conclusion in that case is faulty motherboard.

If you can get your hands on a similar but broken laptop, that would be the cheapest source for spares. That unit in question I used had liquid damage but working display.

2510P webcam retrofit used the docking connector USB pins -> can use that if your 2530P webcam port is faulty

If the webcam systemboard USB port is faulty then can easily route it to use the docking connector USB ports instead. That's how mike50 added a webcam to his 2510P here. Though I'd test a known working webcam module first if I can borrow or get one cheap somewhere.

The un2420 WWAN module works with the 2530p and the whitelist BIOS. I chose the un2420, because i may want to switch to the 2540p soon, because the screen of my 2530p has some defect pixels and gets darker after 4 years of heavy use.

Furthermore the fan only runs very slow, at the lowest option. Even under load it doesn't turn up. So anybody knows how to use fancontrol with 2530p and linux? Lm_sensors only shows temperatures, no vcore or fanspeeds.

Bit the bullet and got a replacement screen with webcam on eBay....
Webcam is now working :) so there is a fully working (apart from the webcam obviously...) 2530p screen on eBay if anyone is interested?

I tried to repaste the cpu today, but theres a huge gap. Unfortunately I already put the old pad away so I will have to buy a new one. So better use pads than thermalpaste.

This is bad news. I was hoping to put a good thermal paste to lowert temps and/or noise. Noise has never been an elitebook strong point.

well, i fixed it by applying some heatresistent plastic to the base, so the cooler gets pushed against the cpu. Lowered my temps by ~6°C. But cleaning the fan helped too.

I put an (Lenovo OEM) SSD (MMCRE28G8MXP) to my 2530p.
The oem SSD drive is much smaller then 1.8" HDD, and HDD holder do not keep SSD drive in place, one time I received non system disk error. I checked drive and I must put back to SSD to place.
How can I fix SSD in place?
    Any Idea?

i have came across a problem with my 2530p. i cannot enable VT hardware accelerated virtualisation. its enabled in the bios but neither virtualbox or vmware say its enabled.

i have the whitelist bios flashed and i have reset the bios a number of times still no VT.

i have the sl9400 so it should support it.
