You should definitely try my method as described above, running it for a whole day now and still working perfectly :).

    In a nutshell:
    F.20 BIOS
Throttlestop 5.00 beta -> Set multiplier to 30x (or 31x (which is even named turbo) or whatever you wish) and enable power saving
Check Turbo Boost with Intel Turbo Boost monitor 2.6.

Please let me know if it works for you too! :)

LEDs near Caps Lock and Number Lock keys blink when starting notebook
The LED lights near the Caps Lock and Num Lock keys will blink if an error is detected during the start up process. The LEDs will blink a number of times in a sequence and then stop. The number of blinks in the sequence indicates what component caused an error when it was being tested during start up.
If the LEDs stop blinking and the computer does not start, you can press the power button again to repeat the tests. Count the number of blinks, and use the chart to identify the error condition.
Knowing the number of blinks is helpful when you contact an HP support agent for technical help. Caps Lock/Num Lock LED Component Tested Error Condition
LEDs blink 1 time CPU CPU not functional
LEDs blink 2 times BIOS BIOS corruption failure
LEDs blink 3 times Memory Module error not functional
LEDs blink 4 times Graphics Graphics controller not functional
LEDs blink 5 times System board General system board failure
LEDs blink 6 times BIOS BIOS authentication failure

I had the same problem some time ago, but the reason was a faulty battery. If the laptop even with only power cord connected doesn't start, it should be a problem with electronics on mainboard. Contact HP to solve this!

@F.26: Can you find out if this bios enables Sata-600 again?

I can confirm that Turbo Boost will not work for quad core CPU from BIOS F.20 onwards. I'm using 8460p and Turbo doesnt work for my 2670QM. After some failure on my mainboard, HP replaced system board and the new board comes with F.08. Turbo works without any problems with F.08. The only way to get Turbo working normally is to flash back to F.08 and below but its not possible since you have F.20 and above now. Solutions are :

    (1) Ask HP to re-enable Turbo with new BIOS but I think they will ignore you because I have asked them more than 100 times a few months ago.

    (2) Pray your board will get damaged so HP will replace it and hopefully they will replace it with F.08 inside it

    (3) Ask HP if you can downgrade to F.08

By the way can do me a favour by flashing to F.26 and check if Turbo works? SATA3 works normally until F.22.

I have had this problem before and its not battery but mainboard problem. The notebook can boot from AC adapter but battery will not charge. I suggest you to send to HP for board replacement?

Turbo works for dual core CPUs but HP disabled it for quad core models maybe because of heat problem. The cooling is quite crappy for a business notebook.

You didn't really read my last messages, as I got Turbo working perfectly with BIOS F.20. And I guess I could get it working with F.22 or F.26 too, but I'm not willing to test that out at the moment as I don't want to spoil things now ;).

Just installed BIOS F.26 on my 8460p and Windows won't start. Downgraded to BIOS F.20 and Windows starts without any issue. Seems that HP did another terrific job!

Sorry to hear that. My dual core one with the F.26 has no problems at all. And did not have them either with F.08. Good luck with the next bios release!

    Hello all,

i want to share my HP elitebook 8460p with SSD 320 series problems.

    Hard drive Specifications :
    1. Model Number : INTEL SSDSA2BW160G3H
    2. Model SERIES : INTEL SSD 320 SERIES 160 GB (show as 8 MB in intel SSD toolbox)
    3. Serial Number : BAD_CTX 0000013F (shown in intel SSD toolbox)
    4. Firmware : 4PC10365

    PROBLEMS :

    1. Bluescreen error in windows vista enterprise 32 bit after automatic update in my company.

    2. After restarting the notebook i got the following message in the startup "REBOOT AND SELECT PROPER BOOT DEVICE". My windows wouldn't even start.

    3. I connect my SSD into another computer as secondary drive and boot to the windows. Check in the disk management, i found my harddrive is only 8 MB. Many of the forum called this "8 MB BUG". Note : my SSD harddrive is not shown in my computer.

    SOLUTIONS TRIED :

    1. HP software & driver : I downloaded "Intel Solid State Drive (SSD) Firmware Update" on website " HP EliteBook 8460p Notebook PC -  Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center" and trying to do install SP52887 directly from windows and it says "setup status : this harddrive model is not supported : ST380013AS" which is my first harddrive (not the SD). The most updated firmware, i try to install SP5508 and it says "update status : This harddisk model is not supported". SP52887 installer is also comes with disk images to update firmware from boot process, i also do this and it says "your harddrive is having the latest firmware, no upgrade is needed". So, i think i have no luck with HP software & driver.

    2. Intel SSD toolbox : I downloaded Intel SSD toolbox from website " http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18455&lang=eng%20" and i cannot update to the latest firmware because of i have the latest firmware already. The only thing left is "SECURE ERASE" and it's the last thing i want to do because it will delete all the data in the SSD hard drive.

    QUESTIONS :

Anybody know how to fix SSD 320 series harddrive without secure erase it ?

You got it working with throttle stop right? I did that too when I was using F.20 and above but it was a hassle and I got to launch it every restart.

Turbo is working by default with F.08. Throttlestop is not needed at all.

Hi All, just thought I might add some input to the issue of F.26 BIOS and turbo mode with quad core CPUs. I have recently fitted a i7-2760QM to my 8460p laptop. I am currently running the F.26 BIOS and have no issues with the turbo mode and this bios version.

The turbo mode will not engage until the machine is placed under load. At idle the CPU appears to run at about 800 MHz and depending on the number of cores utilitized turbo will range from 3200-3500MHz. Acording to the specs on this CPU on intels website this is correct. With all cores utilised the max frequency being 3200MHz.

BIOS F.26 won't work with the Samsung SSD 830 whereas BIOS F.20 works with 6Gb/s and BIOS F.22 with only 3Gb/s. That's what I call progress the HP way!

It is quite easy to avoid that. Just set the settings once, press save and and a shortcut to Throttlestop to the Startup folder under All Programs :)

Can you try to flash back to F.20 or F.22 and test again? If Turbo does work then I would take the risk and flash to F.26. I have a feeling HP disable Turbo on some specific models like 2670QM. 2760QM might be excluded. How is your 8460p's temperature after the upgrade?

Yup, SATA3 is disabled after F.22. I asked HP and they said only SATA2 is officially supported as stated in specifications. What a lame excuse. I wonder if I should buy HP in future because they don't listen to customers.

Yup, that is a quick solution but I would prefer Turbo enabled in BIOS level. Why whould HP disable HP in the first place? You might want to try F.26 because someone said his 2760QM can Turbo. If you did try F.26 do report back because I'm thinking of flashing to F.26 too.

Been lurking on this forum since I got an HP 8460W last April. I think it already has the F.20 BIOS back then and then upgraded it to F.25. Then I learned that turbo is disabled. Well, I just upgraded to F.26 and it looks like turbo is working now. I have an i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz and I see them running around 2.8GHz. Not sure what's the max at turbo speed. And also before cpu freq was complaining that it's not supported (am running Centos6.2). That message is now gone. So this update fixed those 2 issues for me. :)

Yes, turbo is working. I see my quad cores running between 2.9 to 3.1 GHz when doing some load test. As for sata3, I can't answer that since I still have sata2 disks. I'm still thinking on whether I should get a new disk since the one I'm using is still pretty new. I'll post up on here if I do get a sata3 disk in the future.

I have the impression that since updating to F.26 my laptop is running hotter and the fan is more often on. Also the power adapter seems to be hotter.
Not sure if its indeed the fact ;-)

I am intrigued by this, anyone tried adding a backlit keyboard yet?

Here is a 5330m keyboard for sale on ebay

Also I ran across this backlit keyboard that says it is compatible with the 8460 and 8560 but it has the number pad so I'm doubting it will work for the 8460.

    Hi,

Perhaps there's an answer on this thread but it's a long one so kindly ask your patience and help on the following problem.

I've just got an Elitebook 8460p with the Radeon HD card and a 230W Advanced Docking Station running Win7 Enterprise. The laptop worked fine undocked over the weekend.

This morning I've setup the dock with my usual config.: two screens - one VGA (because of the KVM switch) and one DVI. This config was working very well with an Elitebook 6930p. The 8460p also works "normal" up to the moment that it flickers the screens, randomly and with an interval from a few minutes to xx minutes; and this messes all my windows. It seems the screens go into power save and then return. Windows automatically assumes one screen mode and all windows are moved back to the main screen. Very strange...

I've checked the cables, installed the latest BIOS and video drivers from the HP site. I've also deactivate the powerplay and vari-bright.

    Any help is much welcome.

    Thanks.

I had the same machine as yours mpaa but, I'm afraid, I only ever connected it to one screen! Worked a treat and never gave any problems. Mine was tweaked to an inch of its life so maybe start with simple things like exchanging the power pack and try with one screen to see if that's ok. Then again the 230w power pack should be able to handle anything.

mpaa, try closing the laptop lid (latched) and then reopen it.

I haven't tracked down the reason why yet, but I'm having a lot of hardware behavior issues and I suspect it's because the machine is getting confused as to whether the lid is actually open or not.

Too Bad, but there seems to be no way for backlight Keyboard in 8460p!

Download BIOS F.26 and F.20 from the HP support site. Install the BIOS via USB Key or HPQFlash program. BIOS F.20 supports SATA III with my Samsung SSD 830, but won't work with some other SSD models. BIOS F.26 seems to work with most SSDs, but will crash Windows with my Samsung SSD 830. Good luck!

F.20 should support SATA3. F.08 is still the best if you haven't upgrade, Turbo, SATA3 is broken after F.20.

Unfortunately "should" doesn't work on my config and not able to roll back to F.08 either as F.22 was installed by default.

Turbo seems to function properly on F.27, though, no problem, but not SATA3

    ?

On the UK page, which you might be looking at the U.S. page, the docks are listed within the accessories section after selecting a model... There are also other models that will work but you'd have to change the power supply.

Hi All, got some good news for the SSD drive users wanting SATA3 with BIOS F.27. I have installed the following driver from intel "STOR_Win7_8_11.5.0.120_PV.exe" and can confirm that my OCZ Agility 3 displays as 6Gb/s. I benchmarked with AIDA64 and was getting data transfer between 400-510MBs. The details of this driver are available at Intel RST Driver with Windows 8 Support - Softpedia

Hi Mike, thanks for this hint. Seems like intel has removed this driver from their support page due to instability issues.

Nevertheless, i was able to find the driver pack elsewhere and installed it but am again unsuccessful to get this bloody controller run at 6gb/s..: (

Just got one second hand (brand new look) with firmware version 8. SATA 3 works great.
Cant be happier with this purchase.

Thanks to this forum I could do my research and purchase it with confidence :)

    Hi,

i just got a refurbished unit, I really like it. But the LED of the mute button is orange all the time, even when I set it off and on. Is this normal? I think it should be white like wlan and 'the Internet button'?

ok, after installing the audio drivers from hp, the button can change ist color now.

btw. Win8 64bit is working like a charme.

after a ~9 months of usage of my hp8460p - the power adapter keeps disconnecting from laptop very easily , I do often connect power adapter during the day - several meetings during the day at work, than at home. Does anyone have the same issue about unstable power adapter plug to laptop?

We have a few 8460p and 6460b machines in work and so far none have any issues with the power adapter as it's quite a good fit. My partner also has an 8460p and she uses it all over the house... no issue.

    Okay this is interesting.

I sent my laptop to HP for warranty and they decided to replace my CPU. And instead of giving me my old CPU (Core i7-2620QM, top of the line dual core) they gave me a Core i7-2670QM, bottom of the line quad core.

It's definitely a lot faster than my old cpu, but I have not tested how the battery life will be affected by this.

What do you guys think? Should i keep the upgrade or turn back to the dual core for better battery life?

"It's definitely a lot faster than my old cpu" - Sold! I'd keep it :) There's always the s09, CC09 and/or BB09 for extended battery trips

    i7-2620M - 2 cores 4 threads, 35w max TDP, 2.7Ghz turbo 3.4Ghz
    i7-2670q - 4 cores 8 threads, 45w max TDP, 2.2Ghz turbo 3.1Ghz

The quad has a lower default core speed so with everything set to max battery (max cpu 5%) you might not notice 'that' much battery drain (Would have to test) over the 2620m. I'd keep the quad every single day of the week!

    Hi, I found new issue:

I have 2 modules: WLAN and WWAN for internet.
When both are physically installed in laptop the coverage and amount of discovered networks is twice less when WLAN module is installed alone.
Same situacion with WWAN- if is installed alone I can connect to my mobile internet, if I put inside also WLAN module, then is imposibble (I can't even find my mobile operator - which has really week signal in my city).

    Any idea's?

As I mentioned before my partner has an 8460p with both the WWAN card and wireless... no issues. :/ The issue does sound REALLY odd! Which cables are plugged into what?

Can you please share the URL where you got the STOR_Win7_8_11.5.0.120_PV.exe file? I would like to try it on my Crucial M4 SATA3 SSD.

Does anyone have the download link to the F.28 bios? It is not listed on the download page. The Advisory that mike6502 posted only has links to the main download page that only has f.27 listed. Did the F.28 download get pulled? I would still like to try it.
