Yesterday I opened a case with HP about how to download the f.28 bios. It took them 1 day to get back to be but what I was told is that the notifications are published once a month, but the files only get published once a quarter. I was told that the f.28 bios should be available in the first or second week of October, since September is the end of Q2. :(

    Hello Friends;

For hp 6460b laptop with a resolution of 1600x900 lp140wd1 (TL) (M1) display with HP SPS-LCD CABLE KIT HD + 6460b cable I bought it. But the screen does not display when I inserted the light coming from behind the screen. If there is no problem with the screen resolution of 1366x768 original. I had to get B140RW02 screen. Is it true?

PLEASE HELP!! Thank you in advance for your comments and support.

BIOS F.28 will not work with Samsung SSD 830 - won't boot! But F.20 works well and also supports SATA III 6GB/s.

That's really disappointing. I was eagerly waiting for a nice Samsung SSD 830 offer.
Really no chance to get it working? Did you try the latest firmware for the SSD?

Are there any things that makes F.28 better than F.20?
There is Notebook FanControl for a working fan speed control on our 8460p, so i personally don't see any things that they could do better.

I've the chance to buy an unused EliteBook 8460p for my parents. The seller charges 600 Euro which is a hell of a bargain price. Even the warranty is valid. The specs of this machine are Core i7-2620M, 4 GB of RAM, 320 GB common hard disk drive, hs2340 HSPA+ module, 1600 × 900 pixels display, and unfortunately an AMD Radeon HD 6470M which is really crap with regard to battery life.

There is one thing that's been troubling me. The product number is suspicious. There's neither a number sign (#) nor a code that specifies the region (e.g. GB956EA#ABD, GH719AW#ABD, XN710EA#ABD).

    http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?SearchText=LJ429AV

I don't know these acronyms. What do "RCTO", "DSC", and "F/FPR" stand for?

I think I shouldn't pass up this opportunity. What do you think of that?

As long as the warranty is valid but the machine :). It might be a refurb like my 8470p. The AMD isn't that bad on battery and you've always got the BB09/CC09 etc battery options for crazy battery life.

You could also fit a quad core cpu with ease :)

Do you guys think the elitebook 8460p will receive official windows 8 support? In Hp's support site the 8470p already has windows 8 drivers and the 8460p does not. I hope we won't be left behind because I quite like this machine.

Contact Hp support, send them your proof of purchase and they will send you back tools to unlock the computer. If you have no proof of purchase you might have an stolen one. In this case I urge you to return it to their original owner since many of these machines have Computrace (tracking software) enabled. It is also against this forum rules to discuse bios password bypassing (I think) so you wont find help here.

Well, if it will, than it will take some time as usual, but most of the 8470p's drivers working, except a few of course. Here is what are definitely works:
    sp59426 - gigabit ethernet
    sp59253 - protect tools
    sp58647 - synaptics touchpad driver
    sp59253 - devce access manager
sp59033 - alcor micro smart card reader
    sp59291 - itd hd audio
sp59021 - Broadcom Bluetooth Software Driver
sp59036 - Intel Wireless LAN Drivers for Microsoft Windows
sp59043 - jmicron media card reader
sp59117 - LSI High Definition Audio (HDA) Modem Driver
sp59343 - hp universal camera driver

    A few won't work, so I used the 8460p Win7 drivers:
    sp57275 - HP 3D drive guard
    sp57879 - hotkey

What I not found is a working intel graphics driver.

I already installed win8 on the 8460p with Ati, WWAN, etc. It worked fine, I just had to add Ati, Sound and wwan drivers manually, the w7 64bit drivers worked.
But I sold this notebook, the screen quality was just awful. I had the 1600x900 resolution, the brightness was good, but it had slight yellow tint and it was so grainy, it was like looking through some mesh. It was simply the worst display I ever had to look upon.

Just tried to upgrade my 8460p to 16Gb RAM using Corsair Vengeance 2x8Gb DDR3/1600Mhz SO-DIMMS which according to crucial and corsair site support the laptop, however on boot, WIndows 7 Pro wont start, just sits at the starting window. If i down it to one 8GB SO-DIMM, the damn operating system starts. Any ideas?? Really need the 16Gb for buidling complex Virtual Machines.

Upgraded my HDD to SSD, but I wasn't able to buy a Samsung Series 830, so I brought the new Series 840 -not the Pro version-. Its working fine with F.28 BIOS.
    AS SSD Benchmark.PNG

When I started the test with an older verison of AS SSD, it was measured 508MB/s. Its clearly shows, wahat Samsung states, in seq. write is slower, than the 830's, but I got an Win 8 Pro upgradde with it (already had one), so if I substract the upgrade price from it, it was a pretty good buy, brought around 213 USD, incl. Win 8 Pro Upgrade.

Yes, they are fit perfectly, actually some SSDs are thinner than HDDs, but the plece of the screws is in same place, so don't worry, they will fit.

I just picked up what I feel is an incredible deal on an 8460p. Like new, barely used, exactly how I wanted it to be configured!
    i5 2520
    Intel graphics
    1600x900
    4gb
    128gb ssd

Paid $400 shipped on eBay, should arrive in a couple days.

My question is... What ssd does HP use? I know they've traditionally stuck with Intel and Samsung. I'm hoping it's a Samsung 830 128gb!

Can't use fingerprint sensor to authenticate on a 8460p with Windows 8.
After restart, display flashes with no possibility of logging in; only solution is power off and restore system with W8 DVD.

Hey, I got one with exactly the same problem, after hours of research I found nothin on the subject.
On the off chance I put the hard drive in my Toshiba laptop and did a fresh install of windows 7 when I put the hard drive back in the HP to my surprise it loaded up and auto installed correct drivers! I'm still locked out of the bios which is annoying but the machine is fully functional, hope this helps!
If anyone has help with the bios lock out, it would be much appreciated.

A hardware reset could help: Turn off your machine, unplug the AC adapter, remove the battery, and press and hold the power button for at least 30 seconds.

    What happens then?

Umm... not sure on the speed of the memory you used. I have 2* 8GB SODIMM 1333MHz working which are branded 'MR Memory' on the sticker on them. In other words just the 'cheap' stuff. Works fine and makes a huge difference for building complex networks in GNS3 in VM, and other running other VM machines. Only issue I get now is the heat when running the CPU under high loads for long periods of time (hours).

I see that 'HP Support Assistant' poped up with a important 'upgrade' for the bios to F.29 via SoftPaq no. SP60365

Anyone installed this yet and got any feedback on the SATA 2/3 speeds and other issues? Anyone know if I can restore previous version post F.20 if this has 'issues'.?

I am running the F.29 BIOS with a SandForce based SSD (Kingston HyperX) on Windows 8 and I am getting SATA3 speeds. I haven't benchmarked it, but the SATA 2/3 switch is still visible in the BIOS and Intel RST is showing 6 Gb/s.

Is there any possibility to update the bios without the bios password? As I noted in my previous post I don't have the bios password. I am currently still on F.04 (2011 lol). Normal flashing it through windows ends up asking me for a bios password.

Try this one. Maybe it deletes the BIOS password.

Power off your machine. Unplug it from the external power source (PSU). Remove the battery. Press and hold the power-on button for at least 30 seconds.

    Hi Everyone,

I’m between choosing an Elitebook 8460s and a Probook 4540s so I’m hoping you guys could answer some questions for me.

Seeing that there is 75 pages of discussion on here, are there any long term problems any of you have had with your laptop?

How do you like the computer as a whole?

    How is battery life?

Has there ever been any documented static electricity issues with the Elite Book casing?

This sounds like a silly question but an old Toshiba Sattelite laptop I had ended up in a class action lawsuit judgement because the metal mesh speaker grills on the bottom corners of the top were conductive to static electricity shock and it could (and on mine DID) fry the motherboard!

Has anyone directly compared the integrated Intel 3000 Graphics Cards to the AMD Radeon HD 7650M?

I’m catching the impression from what I started reading in this thread that the Radeon is bad on battery life?

If the Radeon has a noticeable difference in image quality and performance that may be a deciding factor to me. I do a bunch of Photoshop and Illustrator work, and if the computer is up to snuff I may occasionally be using it to VPN to work and use 3D modeling software like Solidworks remotely. I realize that anything short of an approved Graphics Card will NOT run Solidworks or other 3D software optimally, but I guess I’m looking for something that it will generally work with to some degree.

Is the monitor REALLY that bad? Are you guys expecting Mac Book or Retina display STUNNING HD out of this thing and not something on par with the rest of the market?

Based on reading this thread I'm concerned about the monitor quality but leaning towards the idea of getting it anyway and pairing it with a decent IPS panel monitor. For the cost of the laptop vs.a brand new one with a potentially better screen I'm still coming out ahead if I get one of these.

Any other advice or help is appreciated.

    Hi!

I didn't experienced any kind of static electricity issues. Honestly I think its a good one, I use HP's business notebooks for a while, my previous one was an 6910p I served me for almost five year. Now I with 8460p and well it's different. For starters this bright metal casing is collecting everything, I mean, its need a lot of cleaning, if you want to keep it esthetically attractive. But there are few issues, compare with the 6910p. Some of the design is really stupid. Like, usually I always open the DVD if I lift it, because the poor design, okay, few weeks is enough to learn where to hold it, but I think its still a stupid design.
The battery life is good. I can juice out more than 6 hour, with SSD, minimal light, and with lot of WiFi connection; for a 14" beast, I think its good enough, with the 55Wh CC06 battery. My one is with Intel integrated graphics, I use it for software development, so I don't care with graphics to much... but with 16GB RAM is good for me. For the monitor quality. Personally, I haven't any problem with it, my previous notebook was equipped with piracy filter, so compare that... But it's not a bright display and I love it!!!
Just installed the HP un2430 WWAN card and it has some connection problem, basically its shows that its connected, but my browser can't sense any kind of connection, so its a kind of ongoing issue. Edited: Okay, its solved my one of my provider's card, which I use for data connection using some kind of special way to connect, which one, the connection manager can't handle properly, I checked with other ones, and its working perfectly.
If you think about to change RAM, HDD, or other parts, its easy to maintenance, its a huge plus, compare to few Dell's, which are simply nightmares...
Besides a few of its drawback, its still a really good one, and I love it. <3 Strictly my personal opinions.

Couple of random thoughts .. :D
Graphics performance etc is discussed here : AnandTech - HP EliteBook 8460p: Everything But The Screen
Note that there is a good chance that the current versions of these laptops may have a different screen . This is rather common after a year ..and this one has now been in production for well over that.
We got one last month and there are no contrast issues to speak off . BUT my wife still does not like the display vs the older 6930P High rez . It is better. Both larger !! ( yes it is 1/2 longer or so ) and of course a lot more pixels.
The ATI /AMD lets you run 3 displays at once . The Intel can not.

3 year warranty machines are available now from Tigerdirect and Amazon . for $550 plus tax ( maybe) and a few $$ shipping . The "OOPS" warranty Accidental Protection from HP is $70 for 3 years .
    Not bad.

I'm doing some light Solidworks stuff with my 8560P. Same toy as the 8460P but has a good high rez 15.4 display. And of course I'm running 3 screens :D
This is mainly viewing , editing and measuring .

Fro real CAD you need to look at a 8560W W as in Workstation or 8570W type hardware. $$$

Thanks for the feedback guys. I am actually typing on the exact one that you mentioned right now Supertech. :D I'm not crazy about the screen but once I figure out how to play with the contrast, etc some more it may be better. If nothing else for the money I saved on this I'll go get a 22" or 24" IPS calibrated monitor which I should be using for photoshop work anyway.

    Hi,

I've just picked up an i5 8460p with UMA Intel graphics - I should get it tomorrow.

Can someone clear something up for me? Will I be able to upgrade the CPU to a quad core i7? I'm confused as to whether you can only do this with 8460p laptops with discrete graphics...

In short, has anyone put a quad i7 in an i5 Intel integrated graphics 8460p?

Also, I'll be installing Win 7 Pro from scratch - which of the HP stuff is recommended and which is bloatware?

    Thanks so much.
