    On a standard battery (i7 2630QM, M5950, 8GB, 500 @ 7200), Wifi off, straight note-taking, I can almost hit 4 hours. Wifi on, looking at 2-3 hours.

With BB09, I can almost hit 10 hours with straight note taking, wifi off.

I broke my Y key, HP couriered me a whole new backlit keyboard within 24 hours for free. Even though there were delays with the laptop, I'm impressed with their post sales support.

On standard battery I get around 4 hours, though the battery indicator always tells me less. i7-2820QM, 500Gb SSD, M5950, DreamColor (low brightness), 32Gb RAM, Windows Server 2008 R2

Also, re RAM speed, try different tools. I had HyperX PNP 1866 memory and 1 benchmark tool picked it up while CPUz didn't. I can't remember which one though sorry.

Hi there. I want upgrade RAM in my EliteBook. So question is, if third-party RAM will work or I should buy one from HP? (eg. Is there some kind of blocking feature as for mini pcie cards?)

    Try the power drain:

    1) Unplug the power cord

    2) Remove the battery

    3) Press&hold the power button for 30sec

    See if this helps.

If not, try unplugging the BIOS/CMOS battery for a min.

    Many thanks Aikimox,

    I've found :
The diagnostic utilities use the LEDs near the Num Lock or Caps Lock keys to blink a series of error codes. At the end of the series the blinking stops. The pattern of blinks will occur any time you attempt to start the computer until the error is resolved.

Caps Lock/Num Lock LED Component Tested Error Condition
LEDs blink 1 time CPU CPU not functional
LEDs blink 2 times BIOS BIOS corruption failure
LEDs blink 3 times Memory Module error not functional
LEDs blink 4 times Graphics Graphics controller not functional
LEDs blink 5 times System board General system board failure
LEDs blink 6 times BIOS BIOS authentication failure

( HP EliteBook 8560w Mobile Workstation- HP Notebook PCs - Blank Screen LED Error Codes - c01443366 - HP Business Support Center)

Indeed One of my new RAM module was bad !

I remove it and my laptop is restarted. Yeeesss !

    Many thanks for your help.
    Best regards everybody !

HP RAM is crazy expensive. 8GB 1333MHZ DDR3 1Dm is $1950 on their website with CTO. On ebay, the same spec Patriot signature memory with lifetime warranty is $147. I bought 32Gb and its running perfect.

concerning the battery life of the 8560w with firepro m5950 i stumbled over a picture from the review at pc.zoznam.sk.

in the picture you can see the power states of the firepro and actually there only seem to be two settings, high-performance ( GPU 725 mhz / mem 900 mhz ) and a balanced setting ( core 400 mhz / mem 900 mhz)

isn´t there supposed to be a power state for power saving when you´re running on battery ? It just seems they (HP/ATI) forgot to implement the power saving state

might be worth to look into for saving some energy for extra battery time.
i still have my old 8510p, and i still remember a similar problem a few years back, that could be resolved with a new bios(+videobios) from HP.

this is the picture fom pc.zoznam.sk :

here´s a picture from everest ( aida64) from my old 8510p. There definitely is a power saving state + a balanced setting + High perfomance settings :

Am i the only one finding that this baby is loud in use even on some browsing ?

I disabled the fan always on in the bios , even tried some fan management soft without success .....the problem is not espaccally the fan noise , but more why while the temp are not excessive , the fan still working (55C)

The passive theme for cpu even didn't help on the power scheme stuff ...

Note that i didn't installeed HP powermanagement software a i do most of the time a clean isnatll without a lot of HP trash ..

Ok guyz now i'm scared !! i isntalled last night the soft i found on a hp 8560w thread to handle spped of fan (TP fancontrol) ...while it was not really working (Max fan speed or nothing) i unisatlled it ...

Now no matter the temp i have the fan are on idle ....so on stress tests : Cpu reach 80 degres and gpu 63...

    Is it critical ?

How to set up the old power management ? seems that this soft messed up something ...even after uninstalation

    Hello all...

Question: If I were to purchase both 100wph 9cell batteries, then fit an SSD (M4), clean install, tweak the living heck out of Windows 7 and then set EVERYTHING to max battery, what battery life would I be looking at with the screen light at a low level and general browsing?

    i5 2540M
    Crucial 128Gb M4
    Hyper-X 8Gb ram
    1600x900 screen
    nvidia 1000m

Thanks all.. NEVER MIND! I've gone for an 8460p instead :)

    Hello,
i have some quick question because i wanna buy a 8560w in a couple of weeks.

Can somebody acknowledge, that the SATA Connection is now SATA 6GB´s? When i search about this and called HP some weeks ago, they told me its still SATA 3GB but the Chipset is able to run SATA 6GB but HP didn´t use this.

Also the backlite keyboard. Is it possible to get one in germany?

    Thanks for your help

port 0 and 1 are Sata 6Gbs, port 2 (eSATA on the dockingstation) is Sata 3GBs

Backlit Keyboard apparently only with the US/UK keyboard versions - the German keyboard does NOT have a backlight.

(btw, the 8560w does not have the "pop out keyboard light" like the 8530p/w used to have, either)

The only time I've ever noticed the fan work loudly while browsing is if I have a bunch of windows going and a movie or streaming video. It seems to remain reasonable. Maybe you have the vents filled with dust?

HP EliteBook 8560w Mobile Workstation - Spare Parts - c02844994 - HP Business Support Center

Guyz , i don't know if you expereinced that but i carry time to time my laptp opened , so i take with 2 hands one right and on left on the palm zone of the laptop and i experience small cracling on the left ....can somebody reproduce that ? faulty assembling on the unit or wak design like i think

By far the stupidiest design since i go Workstation With HP ....speaker not even centered ???on in center one on ther right ....concluson stereo image dirty on th right !!

No backlighted keyboard for the majority and not even the light near the cam to compensate ...

The laptop main platform (around the keybloard and wher your palm rest) i no more like the previous its assembling with the body make me think : wranaty ewtnsion i got was a must ...

The express card situation make me think twice before buying any express card to use in conjonction with usb 's ..

Those are not major but we're supposed to have enhancement not the opposite when switching from old to new models ....

But i can say that you may have a build issue because mine is built like a tank and has never made any cracking noises regardless of how i carry it.

It's always hit and miss when buying directly, there's simply no third party to do the aggressive testing and ensure you don't get a paper weight.

I'd recommend opening up the machine using the online manual and try to reseat the palmrest. Also, if you are going to repaste the CPU/GPU, you can fix the heatsink's fins using a thin flat screwdriver or brow pincers (these work really well for bending the fins).

I am planning on purchasing the 8560w very soon and I have a rather ignorant question about the CPU choices offered.

I definitely will be going with the higher-end, i7 quad-core. But I notice that both the 2820QM and 2860QM run the same, cost-wise. The only difference is that HP is saying their 2860QM has a 6meg L3 cache. When I research this CPU, I cannot find a 2860QM with a 6meg L3 cache (2.5 GHz clock but no turbo). I find one with an 8meg L3 cache (clock speed 2.5GHz and turbo upto 3.6 GHz). I was just wondering if there is a typing mistake somewhere or something that I am not understanding. If someone could please shed alittle light. Thanks! :)

The Core i7-2820QM and Core i7-2860QM have the same amount of cache (8 MB total including L3).

Here is a side-by-side comparison of the two at ARK: Compare Intel® Products

If you have a 2720, just go with it. IMHO if you need the machine, it's not worth the wait. I don't even know that it's worth going from a 2630qm to a 2720qm, but that's just me.

No, I do not have an 8560 with 2720 at all, but only an old LeNovo X-61 with T7300 processor with rattly fan. I am planning to purchase a new machine in February or March 2012 timeframe, hence my question about possible/eventual 2760 variant on 8560 SmartBuy. Aloysius

Could anyone with quadro 2000m please post their BIOS and Video BIOS versions?

That info can be found in System Information menu (ESC menu at notebook start-up). In windows it can be found in HP Support Assistant and Nvidia Control Panel (link with system information in the lower left corner of its window) respectively as far as I know.

Hi there, and first of all, merry Christmas to everyone!
i'm now searching and reading this thread now for 2 weeks, because we also got some of the 8560w workstations at our company!

with one of the workstations we've got a strange problem since last week: i'm unable to turn it on again. it's keeping as quiet as a mouse... :(
as soon as i plug the battery in, or the ac-adaptor, or put the laptop into the docking station, there is a blink-code on the "battery"(lightning) LED. it starts alternating from white to orange very fast, and that all the time. over the christmas weekend, i left the battery in the notebook, and today morning, it's still blinking.

does anyone of you know what this blink-code means? did any of you had such an issue before?

i checked also the blink-codes maintained at: HP EliteBook 8560w Mobile Workstation- HP Notebook PCs - Blank Screen LED Error Codes - c01443366 - HP Business Support Center
but with no luck - my code isn't listed there... :(

maybe you've got a tipp for me!
    thanks + regards
    Fabian

PS: not native english speaker, thanks for your appreciation!

this might be interesting for those of you guys having the Firepro m5950 installed in their 8560w / 8760w.

Since HP has not updated the graphics driver for the Firepro m5950 for a while now, i was searching for an updated driver over at AMD/ATI. I reckoned that Ati might have a newer driver with the proper installation routines for the m5950. While i was searching over at ATi i found a new driver - version 8.85.7.3 / officially released on 19/12/2011 :

you can find the driver for win7 ( 32 and 64 bit ) here :
    AMD FirePro? Mobile Driver

    supported are m3900 and the m5950 in the 8460w / 8560w / 8760w

Information about supported workstation models from the installation routine of C7129660.inf - Ati does support the following graphics card/(HP-) motherboard id´s :
    Code:

    "[B]AMD FirePro M5950[/B] Mobility Professional Graphics" = ati2mtag_VancouverA, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6740&SUBSYS_1630103C
    "[B]AMD FirePro M5950[/B] Mobility Professional Graphics " = ati2mtag_VancouverA, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6740&SUBSYS_1631103C
    "ATI FirePro M5800" = ati2mtag_Manhattan, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68C0&SUBSYS_1521103C
    "ATI FirePro M5800 " = ati2mtag_Manhattan, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68C1&SUBSYS_1521103C
    "ATI FirePro M7820" = ati2mtag_Manhattan, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68A0&SUBSYS_1520103C
    "ATI FirePro M7820 " = ati2mtag_Manhattan, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68A0&SUBSYS_1520103C
    "[B]FirePro M3900[/B] Mobility Professional Graphics" = ati2mtag_Vancouver, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6760&SUBSYS_3671103C

Thanks for the linkschoko; I'll try those out tonight. Now that I'm looking at this doing some gaming on it, new drivers are certainly a good thing. How did you find them? They still don't have the 5850 listed on their front page.
