Hi I've been looking into getting an 8560w and have a couple questions. I know its built well and the 1080p ips screen is high quality, but how is the keyboard and audio? Second, can you put a second hdd into the 8560w? Thanks!
-
NecessaryEvil Notebook Evangelist
It'll take a 2nd drive if you take the DVD burner out. Keyboard's good, audio's decent.
-
Hi NecessaryEvil thanks for the info. So hp sells a caddy for a second hdd that goes into the odd bay? I didn't see one on their site. Thanks again!
-
@technoboy, You can just buy any cabby on ebay, then take the bevel off from the old optical drive and install it on the cabby drive. It worked for me.
-
Hi tony211, thanks for the info!

Hey 8560w owners. I have a few questions about the laptop. Basically I am in the market for a 1080P IPS display (and there are only 3 options)
- 8560w
- m4600 (dell)
- HP Envy 15
I used to own an HP Dv-5 and it overheated all the time. Basically it would get so hot the laptop would just shut down. Therefore, i'm hesitant to buy another HP laptop, but I wanted to get your feedback on this laptop before I judge it unfairly.
I googled "HP Envy 15 overheating problems" And I found a ton of reports of the same type of overheating that my dv5 had, so i'm already ruling that one out.
Now i'd obviously just go with the VAIO since it's not HP, but I heard it has a problem displaying red's accurately, which is no good for me since I do graphic design.
So in conclusion I have 2 questions:
Has anyone who owns this laptop had problems with overheating? To clarify I am fine with a laptop that get's really hot, as long as it doesn't affect the laptops performance or make it shut down or get a BSOD etc..
Also does it have that orangegate (red's not displaying properly problem) that the Dell m4600's have?
If those things check out I will be looking into this laptop, it looks like a beast.
One of the other reasnos I liked the m4600 before I heard about the red problem is that it can accept two batteries and last up to 7 hours (i'm not worried about bulkiness at all, btw)
Does the 8560w have a good battery / a place to put two?
Thanks guys.
Also, are there any 1080p IPS displays i'm missing in my list? -
My 8560w can accept secondary battery, it also doesn't overheat, even not during autocad / 3ds max render.
-
Thanks for the info Palda. Any other's want to weigh in?

the stock one,not the F22 update. I have never thought about checking turbo boost, will check while free time and gf will let me check it

For all .....do not update bios , stick with F03 for now .....

Bkleven, can you clarify why the second piece of kit for the HD Upgrade Bay is necessary:
644694-001
SPS-HDD HARDWARE KIT
In past instances I was able to affix the bare hard drive to the caddy using just hard drive screws. Why is a mounting bracket necessary? -
Bingo. This was the culprit in my audio dropouts for my Elitebook. I uninstalled the puppy.
Here is a link elsewhere to a representative event log message that was indirectly caused.
thx for the hint -
Hello All,
I have an 8560w which I love.
Unfortunately the configuration I got after a long wait was slightly different tham my order... essentially three things missing:
- Webcam
- WWAN Moudle with GPS
- Backlit Keyboard
The first two were very easy and relatively cheap to fix.
I ordered replacement parts and found that retrofitting the webcam was very easy as the screen bezel was already prepared to take the new module.
WWAN was even easier, just popping out the back cover and slotting in the module.
Now, the Keyboard is very important to me as I often work at low-light conditions.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to get anybody to ship me the keyboard.
HP Partsurfer shows the item as non-orderable.
The part# I'm looking for is 652683-131.
Would anyone be able to help here?
thanks in advance! -
I have a tech question that may of been covered in the thread so far, however the search function doesnt seem to work at all so no joy, as such i must ask this even if its been covered before, sorry everyone but i'm not reading 67 pages on the off chance ;-)
Does the 8560w take an mSATA drive and can it be used to boot from then use the main HDD for storage? in the service manual it shows 3 slots in the unit, WLAN, WWAN and one labeled FLASH which to me screams insert an mSATA. or can the WWAN slot be used (i presume this is mPCIE? and is mSATA compatible with mPCIE?)
any info or experience much appreciated
cheers
Ben
oh and also, is this PC SATA3 capable or only SATA2?
cheers again
Ben -
NecessaryEvil Notebook Evangelist
The 8560W is SATA3. Sadly, I can't tell you about MSATA.
-
no mSATA support.
with BIOS version F.03 SATA3 is supported, with the latest F.22 SATA3 apparanently has been disabled, only SATA2 speed according to the benchmarks. -
shame about the mSATA
i guess it will be a gamble to see what BIOS revision i end up with as well which is a pain as buying new. why the heck would they go backwards.........well unless its to make sure older models about to be replaced look slower ;-) -
I have bios F.25 and sata3 seems to be working.
-
which is the model of the ips panel mounted on 8560w dreamcolor2 ?

Hi everyone.
Unfortunately my 8560w upgrade its BIOS itself up to F25 (suppose using auto update on HP Support Assistant). With my first BIOS version (68SVD Ver. F.03) I have no problems.
And now Turbo boost not working( max 2195Mhz -22.0X100),and the Temperature of CPU and GPU are higher ( CPU idle 51-59°C ; GPU idle 50-58°C)
.
I dont know what the hell HP Supports do but things getting worse.
If you have time sheer your experience ,with answering to this post : http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/651746-elitebook-cpu-overheating.html
Thanks in advance -
Yesterday I also got this as work laptop.
Does anybody else have problem with fn key + arrow keys not acting like on other notebooks? (fn key+ up arrow => pg up, fn + left key => home) -

2 Issues....
First one and most importantly, my fan does not work at all, I replaced it with a brand new one because I noticed a screw had split one of the wires of the fan due to forgetting to tuck them back underneath the heatsink (stupid me). But it has a brand new one now and still does not work. Everything still works but the fan, so I am wondering what else it could be. I did notice some black on the motherboard next to where the wire got spliced by the fan jumpers but I feel like if it had shorted the computer would not even turn on. The error on startup is 90B. I have been using it minimally since this and closely watching the temps, maybe having it on 1 hour at the most a day.
Secondly, I have TurboBoost and I have not seen it go over 2.2 once yet even on CPU-Z. I was reading it should boost to 3.1. I'm running Bios F25 and win7 ultimate x64 -
hi,can anyone tell me what to do if you work on the laptop using the battery, you shut down and after 3 seconds it sort of starts itself again.sounds like the fan in the left front corner is on turbo and switches on again?thanx

Planning to upgrade my current HDD to a SSD. Anybody can advice, if I can fit a 7mm straight into the slot without any spacers or special frames? (checked the specifications, it seems the OEM SSD also were 7mm). I am planning to buy Samsung 830 series 128 GB and they have two modifications: basic and laptop-kit. Basic is cheaper and I wonder, if I need anything from this extra laptop kit.
Other cocern - I want to put my current HDD instead of DVD. Has anybody got this Nimitz caddy and is it ok?
eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace
And last question, what kind of "frame" do I need to use my current DVD as external? Would such work? (as I understand, SATA connection is necessary?)
USB 2.0 CD DVD-Rom RW SATA External Burner Case #13 | eBay
Is it possible to put the SSD in the 2nd HDD caddy and to use it as primary HDD for OS etc?
Thanks,
Hopefully you will be able to help me with these simple questions. -
NecessaryEvil Notebook Evangelist
I can't speak of the Nimitz caddy...but:
1. I have two Samsung 830s in my 8560W. A retail on as primary, and an OEM I pulled from a Dell in my HP caddy (unfortunately, there wasn't anyone else with the proper bezel at the time). You won't need any spacers, the laptop kit comes with a USB to SATA adapter. It's up to you if you feel that's important enough to warrant whatever the extra cost is.
2. It's possible to put the SSD in the caddy and boot from it, but I don't know why you would want to. -
Hello, I want to expad my RAM till to 20 GB. I'm going to buy two 8 GB SODIMM and I would like to know if somebody here has already tested some brands. I found this: CORSAIR RAM SO-DIMM DDR3 8GB / 1333Mhz CORSAIR CL9 [1x8GB] 1,5V rt [CMSO8GX3M1A1333C9]
May you tell me if someone has tested it?
Thank you. -
@cypherinfo
hi i have tested Corsair - RAM SO-DIMM DDR3 8GB / 1333Mhz CORSAIR CL9 (CMSA8GX3M1A1333C9) -
Thank you. May you tell me if have you found any difficulty to install it please?
-
Any help or insight please???
-
Thank you. -
Yes - I just got the phone number off their website. I recommend you call rather than use the chat service, I've had issues with them in the past. And for replacing the keyboard I highlighy recommend using the ifixit plastic tools or a soft guitar pick. Its tight, but easily doable yourself.

Thank you. -
New BIOS version "2.3.0.0 REV: A" which is released on March 30th 2012.

The SoftPaq downloader gave tries to download that version.
This is for example for the following models:

HP EliteBook 2740p Tablet PC
HP EliteBook 2760p Notebook PC
HP EliteBook 8440p Notebook PC

HP EliteBook 8460p Notebook PC
HP EliteBook 8460w Mobile Workstation
HP EliteBook 8540p Notebook PC
HP EliteBook 8540w Mobile Workstation
HP EliteBook 8560p Notebook PC
HP EliteBook 8560w Mobile Workstation
HP EliteBook 8740w Mobile Workstation
HP EliteBook 8760w Mobile Workstation
I currently have a HP EliteBook 8560w, but did not install this update, currently running F22.
Anybody who has already experience with this version ? -
I installed it on the same notebook and all seems ok!

While installing dell printer drivers, I managed to get a bsod, which resulted in some faulty files that make it impossible to restore the system. (i've tried everything google could learn me, and always ended up with the same problem with the only solution: backup and do a clean install of w7)
Now when using the HP recovery manager (pressing F11 after entering your ps on boot) the system fails to reinstall itself. Most of the time it gets stuck somewhere seemingly at random.
When I simply download a w7 pro 64bit iso from microsoft, and use this to install a clean version of windows over my current windows partition, will this give me any problems? (regarding logging in and security, since my previous user accounts are still used to get past the boot screen)

For those who are looking for a backlit keyboard with their local layout, I advise you check hp's partsurfer, select your own country/localised supplier, and search for the part you need. While HP US didn't have my specific (belgian, point) keyboard in stock, HP Benelux had it. (which is quite logical, yet nowhere stated on the international/us website.) -
I wonder if there is a way to seach for a part (for example: a backlit keyboard) simultaneously on all the on line local part stores!
Thank you. -
After one year of use on my 8560w this is my $0.02:
Shipped annoyance: my space bar and far left enter key have a nasty squeak in them, but I decided to wait to have them looked at thinking that if I use them enough the squeak will go away. It hasn't.
Shipped annoyance. The screen bezel was not installed exactly square so there is a rather sharp edge on the monitors top left side.
Shipped annoyance: the right side monitor latch depression thing on the laptop's palm rest never fully pops back into place when I open the lid, I have to press the lid open button two or three times to get it to pop back up.
Shipped annoyance (I think): the built-in microphone cannot be shut off even when I am using a headset so if I use Skype or any other communication software the laptop uses the headset mic AND the built-in mic... seriously annoying...
Shipped annoyance & design annoyance: the power adapter has a rather loose fit to it. Sort of disconcerting actually.
Shipped annoyance: the KB back light flickers when it comes on if I activate it using the a,s,d,c,v,f and z keys.
Upgrade annoyance: SSD upgrade yields marginal results. The M4 256 GB SSD I purchased isn't 100% compatible with the HP I/O system (no SSD is), so I had to jump through about 75 hoops to get it to work. So many in fact that if I had to do it all over again I would have just bought a 10k RPM HDD and "suffered" with that.
The boot time is about 16 seconds, yes, and Illustrator launches pretty damn fast, but man was it a huge PITA to get it to work.
Newly developed annoyance: the cooling fan now has a rattle in it...
General annoyance: it's heavier than I expected.
General annoyance: the power adapter has already failed (at 9 months old) and HP would not ship me a new one to my office in mainland China because -and I kid you not - the guy said it was "classified technology that HP is not allowed the Chinese to have", so I had to buy a cheap Chinese knock-off here in Guangzhou. Seems to be working for now...
Which brings me to my other annoyance: the power adapters of these are too damn big and heavy.
General HP annoyance: despite me purchasing the most expensive travel warranty directly from HP (that included China in the literature) HP is refusing to ship me any parts. Do not buy HP travel warranties.
Purchase annoyance: Do not buy from CostCentral. Their customer service is the worst of any retailer I have ever bought a computer from, and when they found out I was in China, told me I had to prove I was an American by having someone from my family in the US send them a proof of citizenship... totally and completely ridiculous. I should have sued them because they demanded this lenghtly delay only after I gave them the money, of course...
I put up a poll some time back about whether or not you regret buying your 8560, and it seems like most ppl do not. I however wish now that I would have purchased an M6600 for my design work and then a cheap ultrabook for travel use. The 8560 is a little too heavy to be a good travel notebook and a little too small to be a good desktop replacement. 15.6" screen with 1080p is just too high of a resolution for the screen size. 17.3" 1080p is much easier to look at 12 to 16 hrs a day. -
NecessaryEvil Notebook Evangelist
What I/O system problems are you having? my Samsung 470 and 830 and Intel G2 all did just fine.
I will agree about the power cord being kind of loose. -
I suggest you to contact the tech support if your warranty is not expired; I heard about peoples who had their elitebook raplaced for that you call: "annoyances"; please let us know if you succeed.
The ways Hp offers to contact it for customer support are: phone, chat and message with a form. The latter is the one where you'll find all your submitted cases archived and where you may track the active ones; here a link to it: https://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/scm/home/
Thank you. -
I cannot use tech support for my laptop because I am now working in mainland China and HP refuses to help me while here. See above post about sending "classified parts" to China...
They said I would have to ship my laptop to the US (two week trip) have a service call done (another week) and then ship it back here (another two weeks). Meanwhile I would have been fired two days into this repair fiasco because I don't have a machine to do my job on.
If you live/work abroad from the US, do not buy from HP. Period.
Newer Intel SATA controllers that use LPC do not like SSDs. I get about 2/3s the speeds other get. -
Hello,
Thank you. -
1. The power plug does not fit tightly into the laptop.
2. My laptop did not come with a factory installed SSD. I bought it and installed it myself.
