what color gamut the screen can cover won't affect the battery performance. that's seems like an illogical request from your side - do you know what gamut is?

regarding office battery time of 8560w take a look at this quality review on pcsk

I do know what gamut is, but I'm not an expert regarding how power usage is affected when switching from one color space to another (on hardware level). I've been told wide gamut displays use more power than displays with narrower gamut, so it would make sense to me that since you can choose the color space the display uses, maybe on hardware level (see for instance: http://tech.icrontic.com/files/2011/01/DreamColor-display-assistant.png), choosing a relatively narrow color space such as sRGB might use less energy. I don't claim it works that way (it may just artificially "cap" color space without trying to save energy), so if you know that it does not save energy, you can ignore that part of my question.

Thank you, but I'm specifically looking for the battery time of a Quadra 2000M model, not AMD FirePro, which seems to have been used in that test (based on the first page of that review).

I've posted link to that review so you would not have to rely on "I've read somewhere on forums".

Firepro 5950 was used in the testing unit. Look at those 3dmark scores, do you think you can get those with quadro?

I have no idea - haven't looked into it as I don't think I'll be running any software that would require much 3D rendering power. Just to clarify: I'm not trying to choose between the two GPU's, I'm trying to find out what would be realistic to expect regarding battery life from the model I'm considering buying. I only mentioned the FirePro as I've been reading it is relatively power-hungry and therefore I'm cautiously hoping that the battery life for the Quadro models might be significantly better.

I've searched here and it has been asked a few times: does the Nvidia card support multiple external monitors via the docking bay? FYI the Lenovo W520 supports 3 external screens with the Q 1000

quick answer: what I've read only firepro supports 3 screens at once, so quadro is stuck with two.

However you may want to hear from someone actually tried 3 screens on quadro or firepro.

Indeed it does. I am running a 30" at 2560 and a 24" in portrait at 1080x1960. I am going to see if it will drive a 3rd monitor tomorrow.

Awesome! Thanks for your feedback. I'm still trying to decide between a 8560w & a Lenovo W520. I'm leaning towards the HP mostly because the Lenovo looks like machined coal. Nice coal but still...coal.

I have Quadro 1000m and can use only two external monitors (with docking station). Damn HP, Lenovo supports even 4 external monitors (tested with Lenovo T420)

RGB-Led needs more power than W-Led (with smaller gamut). ;) Also IPS needs more power than TN.

I just got mine the other day. I purchased the LG662EA (Core i7-2630QM) model with a 1920x1080 Dreamcolor display.

As I am a nerd, I immediately went to alter it by:
    -- adding 4x 4GB memory
-- replacing the standard HDD with a OCZ Vertex 3 120GB SSD drive, for OS and apps
-- TODO: replace the optical drive with a second HDD caddy ( 2nd HDD/SSD caddy for HP 8560p [HP-2BAY-8560] - $44.75 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks) and putting a WD 1TB HDD in there for data storage. The 1TB drive height is a larger-than-normal 12mm but NewmodeUS says it will work.

This thing literally screams. With the above alterations it boots from cold to Win7 logon screen in about FIFTEEN seconds. Another five seconds to a usable Windows desktop. Amazing!!

What I found hard was adding the memory in the two internal SODIMM slots (not the ones readily available on the back). I literally had to pry the keyboard off the computer. It sits in there HARD.

Also, a bit of a disappointment (I had the 8530w model prior to this one) was a physically larger and heavier laptop, along with a rather heavy charger. Also, why did HP leave the 1920x1200 resolution? New laptops (in general) seem to have 1920x1080 only. I love screen estate!

    Added bugbears:

-- The arrow buttons are way tiny. Could be a learning thing though.
-- The F1-F12 buttons aren't grouped in the regular F1-F4, F5-F8, F9-F12 fashion. This is obviously (not) done for aesthetic reasons. It's going to be hard learning the exact position of the F buttons, as I use them A LOT (Total Commander <3).
-- Did I mention it is way big?

I think I'm going to settle for one of these...

Anyone know a reputable retailer where I can acquire XU082UT#ABA for XU062UT#ABA for considerably less than $1200 on Costcentral and Newegg respectively?

It won't work. Bezel's not right. It says 8560P for a reason, it won't fit flush with an 8560W. You're either going to have to wait for them to release a new caddy, or try to get one from HP. I just ordered from HP...price came out to be just a few bucks more than NewModeUs, but I've been waiting for weeks to have my laptop "done".

Well I've got a XU083UT on its way from Buy.com. I'm going to add another 8GB of RAM and also ordered the bits for the HD upgrade bay via the HP parts store. It will be nice to have enough ram to run more than one VM again.

It would have been nice to have the extra speed and cache from a 2820QM, but I think I'll be plenty happy with the 2630.

I have ordered the same laptop from buy.com. Came in today. I am office now and will get to play for the weekend. I have another 8GB of RAM sitting in my bag ready to be put into this. Seems like we have exactly same requirements of running more than one VM at the same time. What other things have you ordered from HP parts store? Is it the upgrade bay or something else?

    thanks.

Yes, and I bought that for my 8560W the day it became available because of those search results. (Well, had it pre-ordered). It arrived, the bezel didn't fit (didn't have the angled contour of the 8560W, it went straight up like the -P), and they gave me a prepaid shipping label to return it, plus a full refund with shipping.

I love that kind of service, and I certainly recommend their products to others (and still use the tray I bought from them for my 8440W, although it's currently sitting in my docking station until the 8560W caddy comes in)...but in this case, you will not be happy if you buy that for your 8560W. While I was impatient and ordered from HP, I do hope they get the new one out soon, so others don't make the same mistake I did.

I'm curious how many of us have bought the 8560W primarily for virtualization. With how easy and cheap upgrading to 16GB of RAM is right now, I'm looking forward to actually putting it to the use I bought it for. I just need that tray to come in so I can do it off the docking station.

Has anyone tried installing Server 2008 R2 onto this? We're starting to look at virtualization a lot more at work, and it may be easier to add some Hyper-V images to some of the servers in the field for the clients who don't want to pay for a proper bare metal solution. I've got a spare 160GB I plan on tossing in the 8440W caddy and booting off of it while in the docking station to test things out, but I'm curious if there's already a fairly well beaten path or if I get to be the trailblazer.

So this works 100%? The upgrade Bay part isn't listed on the 8560w Spare Parts list.

HP EliteBook 8560w Mobile Workstation - Spare Parts - c02844994 - HP Business Support Center

But it is listed on the 8760w list.

So does it work with the 8560w anyways and does it look ok?

    Thanks in advance!

not primarily for Virtualisation - but I use VMware Workstation a lot. Right now only with 8GB (the other 8GB arrive next week). With a 240GB SSD it´s quite relaxing running VMs and working with the system.
My other VMs I start either off a USB3 1TB drive (2,5", power over USB) or a eSATA USB3 drive (faster, but needs extra powersupply).

I'm just wondering what temps people are getting on the i7 2630QM on the 8560W. I'm getting 49-52C on idle across all four cores, which seems a bit hot.. but then again it only goes to 80C max on Prime95 SmallFFTs after 30 min.. which doesnt seem too bad.

Those temps are in line with what I'm seeing as well.

I don't have any actual data on this matter, but I am interested in the question as well. As far as I can make out, the Quadro models would only have better battery life because of improved switching technology to the integrated chipset.

According to Notebookcheck, the TDP rating for the 5950 is expected to be the same as the Radeon HD 6770M. And referring to that GPU, the TDP is said to be similar to the Mobility Radeon HD 5770. And the power useage for that GPU is "30 Watts".

Meanwhile the "Quadro 2000M is specified at 55 Watt TDP".

So by that I would assume that the Quadro would, under straight up comparison result in battery life that was half of the 5950. But then, that does not account for driver issues or switching benefits.

According to specifications its 6.4 ounces heavier and 1/4 inch thicker. But, when opened (as it would be on a flight tray for example) it is actually a little bit smaller.

Personally, I don't like extra weight, but I don't mind some thickness.

    Hey Elitebook Owners!

Seriously thinking about becoming one of you. Comparing Elitebook 8560w (for power) with Envy 14 (for mobility). (also have DV6t-Quad hiding in the shadows and underbrush).

    I don't care about DreamColor.

is there anyone here who owns a 8560w -- who thinks just maybe they should have gotten something smaller, lighter like the Envy 14?

Anyone who had an Envy 14 would moved up to the 8560w and has a view on it?

I'd appreciate any insights you guys have!

Indeed, it did not fit snugly. However it technically does work, apart from not being very fitting.

I'll get myself the HP second-drive bay spare part instead. Does the HP part also allow for 12mm = 1TB drives?

Yes it does fit 12mm drives. It uses the same bracket as the 8560W's primary drive.

My HP cage & caddy arrived today. The color on the HP doesn't match the 8560W (it's a different shade of gray), and it's a PITA to get installed. You're better off screwing in the drive cage to the caddy, then inserting the hard drive than trying to screw the drive into the cage and then into the caddy. But, it works, and I can finally use my laptop the way I intended to.

Additional issue, when compared to the 8530w: HP removed the volume buttons! Quite annoying. Maybe one could re-program the Browser / Calculator buttons to decrease/increase volume? Anyone know how to do this?

Exactly what parts did you order to get the drive caddy thing working? Let's say I have a 12mm 2.5" drive that I want to use as a secondary drive, replacing the optical drive.

Has anyone tried using ram sticks of different size? I have two 4 GB RAM sticks installed on machine and have two 2 GB lying around. Will it impact performance having 2 GB and 4 GB sticks installed at the same time?

    from the Product Bulletin:
Dual-channel: Maximized dual-channel performance requires SODIMMs of the same size and speed in both memory slots.

so as long as you put both 4GB SODIMMs in slot 1&2 and both 2GB SODIMMS in slot 3&4 you should be fine - at least if all 4 are DDR3 PC3-10600 SDRAM (1333 MHz)

I also have noticed that i7-2820QM never goes to 3,4GHz (3,3GHz maximal). It seems that HP limits the CPU.

    Anybody editing/viewing 1080p 60fps HD videos?

Just got my 8560W and am having problems playing back HD videos that I shot with my new camera. The videos are M2T/MTS format, 1080P, 60 frames per second. This is progressive video high framerate not interlaced. My work laptop is an 8540W with 2.8 Ghz dual core i7 and doesn't have an issue. Wifes Dell with i5 dual core also is fine. Playback is really choopy on mine. Any ideas?

I thought it might be bad drivers.
Went to the HP site and installed the latest, same results.
Went to the NVIDIA site and tried that one, still no go.
Pretty frustrating I might say. Spent $1700 and actually worse off than I was with the previous setup.

Bad power settings? Try running whatever 3dmark utility there is out there and report the results. I'll do the same.

Does anybody know how to modify the behavior of the Hotkeys on the top cover?

I'd like to set the Internet button to 'decrease volume' and the Calc button to 'increase volume'. Im sure there's a way of doing it, either via the registry or via the Hotkey Presentation-button utility that existed on my 8530w (but not with the 8560w??).

    Regards,

Which program do you use to playback videos? I use the same format as you from my camera, and play them using this:

    Free Splash Lite Download

    Works perfectly.
