Hi all, I am from Germany and I ordered my 8560w and will receive it shortly.

First of all I am a little bit jealous that you in the USA can order the i7-2760qm. Here in Germany it was quite difficult to even customize a HP at all, but here is my configuration.

    i7-2720QM QuadCore 2,20 GHz
500GB HDD will be replaced with 256GB Crucial M4 (the 500GB will go into external USB3 casing)
    16 GB RAM (1600Mhz)
    15,6”, Full-HD non-glare (1920 x 1080)
    AMD FirePro™ M5950 (1GB GDDR5 RAM)
    DVD+/-RW SuperMulti DL
3 Year Warranty on Notebook and Akku

I hope that I can provide you with some tests when it arrived and I have everything installed.
The cost was quite OK, I payed 2100€ for everything :)

Never heard of an i7-2760qm. Nothing on the Intel site shows it. Where did you hear about that??

pretty much every HP partner in Germany (or DACH) can configure models and make quotes.

    sorry, foreign language:

Dear 8560W owners, I hope you could help the poor ThinkPad W520 owners (like me  ) by cross-checking one issue.
More and more W520 owners are experiencing random shut down without any BSOD, with no heavy activities, mostly having machine in idle, see this voting http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/611616-please-vote-do-you-have-any-issues-your-w520.html. The remarkable fact is - there is no dump file, no BSOD.
The W520 community has excluded, with the quite high confidence, any memory of NVidia issues and narrowed down the cause to probably faulty motherboard revision. Lenovo is not helping at all, actually is censoring that topic (so the voting had to be moved to this forum, thanks to forum owner :p ) and also Lenovo is refusing to give any information about how many MB revisions are out there and which one could be affected.
Now, one user had discovered, that by disabling CPU Power Option in Thinkpad W520 BIOS ( Re: W520 shuts off intermittently, no BSOD or shut... - Page 39 - Lenovo Community), no more random shut down is occurring and I can confirm that too, beside many others.
Unfortunately, that discovery is giving ammunition to Lenovo support to start accusing Intel i7 2720/2820/2920 CPU. Of course that Lenovo cannot run away from the responsobility sending me to Intel but: the barrier here is, when W520 owners send the unit to Lenovo repair center, beside loosing the unit for 3-4 weeks (yes, they take a lot of time), Lenovo always reports back that no issue could be discovered (because it is random), so official respond of Lenovo is "no issue, no problem", leaving me and others in the situation to prove it to them.
Would you guys be so kind to check if you have ever experienced such similar issue which could be temporarily solved by disabling CPU Power Option in your BIOS? I have searched your forum and could not see any similar complain, but avail, I might have overseen something. To be honest, I expect that yours 8560W do not have such issue at all, so no faulty Intel i7 CPU are causing the issue but only the faulty Lenovo ThinkPad motherboards.
That would be a great help to me in order to get back my money and hey, maybe become a happy owner of 8560W?

    BR
    Wolf

I've been expecting something like this for a while. Since Thinkpad was taken over by a wholly Chinese company, Lenovo, I've been waiting for the quality issue to become a problem. I watched from the beginning of this year how Lenovo got way out in front of the marketing and advertising curve with all their products, and how aggressive they have been in getting out as many of their machines -- including the supposed "top of the line" W520 -- into the public. Of course, it is every company's goal to sell as many of their products as possible but the Chinese are doing things in ways that are different from Western companies: the are doing it purely for the profit and to saturate the market, to take shares from the other of the big three, Dell and HP, and ultimately to destroy them. These companies are, no surprises here, NOT wholly owned by Chinese interests.

I don't trust the Chinese government as far as I could throw it. They are out for world domination at any costs. I am making a concerted effort to by everything I purchase from anywhere in the world EXCEPT China. I hate what they are doing. By the way, they own both ends of the Panama Canal and a lot of what lies in-between. Thanks to people like Jimmy Carter.

I don't know that price talk is common here, but $1,350 is a good price for this machine. It's actually the one I bought, except I got mine from Buy.com because the affilate fee went to a non-profit I work with.

Are you guys happy with the quality of the housing?

Some of the previous Elitebooks I own(ed) and also a 8560w I had in my hands recently have a problem that the display doesn't close that tightly (a bit of rattling).

By the way, I really like the new touchpad - a big plus to the W520 (don't really like trackpoints)

I searched a couple of online sides and a lot of them said only for business not for personal use. But I found one in Berlin, which was quite nice and I actually got what I wanted :) except the 2760qm which would have been nice, but they said they have to test it first because of heat, etc. and it would take a couple of week or month.

Now I just have to wait till it is shipped :). Currently it looks like mid to end of next week.

I have that problem with mine.. the front left (female) locking mechanism is constantly depressed so only the right side locks down. I was upset about it at first, but it's the only flaw so far on the whole machine.. it doesn't bother me all that much.

When may we expect a SmartBuy 8560W model based on I7-2760QM in the US? HP already shows I7-2760QM in 8560W configurator, priced the same as 2720 option.... But no SmartBuy models yet. An HP rep on the phone decline to forecast when such a model may be listed/released, because of typically long testing on business-class machines.

Conversely, the rep stated it is unlikely there will be SmartBuy models based on I7-2860 at all.

Any comments and guesses about likelyhood and timing of these new processors on SmartBuy models?

CPU yes. GPU within the same family ATI to ATI or Nvida to Nvida probably. ATI and Nvida use different heatsinks, so if you want to switch, you'll need a different heatsink too.

For the first time today, I got a message that the AC adapter included with my laptop will reduce my laptop's performance, and that I should buy a new one.

I'm little confused -- this is the adapter that came with my laptop (USA).

HP P/n: 645509-002, replace with HP spare 646212-001

Is there something wrong with my AC adapter?

Just ran 3D mark 11, got a score of 905 with the AMD FirePro M5950.

The Quadro 1000 scores even better than this. I thought the FirePro was supposed to be better than the Quadro 1000.

Edit: Reran 3D mark, results attached

I bought mine on ebay for half the price and swapped the bezel with the factory one. Just push the eject button and push the plastic bezel down - there's 3 clips, no screws and is very simple. I ordered a CTO machine with a blu ray and HP used the same bezel as the CD-RW. It now sits in the dock with the ebay bezel and looks fine.

Because it's cheap in the USA too. I paid $1,400 for mine and added 256GB SATA 6.0 SSD, an additional 8GB of DDR3 and a second HD bay (replaced optical) and was still under $2,000, so I don't know where you're getting $4,000 from.

I have a built-to-order 8560w with 4 slots, but ordered only with one 4GB module.
The two memory slots at the bottom are readily accessible and I put in another 2 4GB module, summing up to 12GB now.

But… how the heck do I get the 4th module in?
According to the Service Guide and the Service Manuals I have to remove the keyboard – but I am worried to break something.

Before you begin: Remove the battery, and accessory cover.
    (check)

Loosen the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws identified with keyboard icons that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
    (check)

Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
    (check)

Using your finger or a flat bladed non-marring tool, gently lift up on the rear edge of the keyboard to disengage the keyboard from the top cover.
(ha! The keyboard sits so tightly that I am really worried to break something. What “flat bladed non-marring tool” do you use for that?)

As I know, my book have Intel Centrino 6250 wlan card, and this card is supported by HP BIOS.
My BIOS version is F.03. I tried downgrade BIOS to F.02 and F.01 but still have this problem.

I am exactly in the same situation as you are. Installed the extra 2 x 4GB in the bottom memory slots but have hard times trying to get the keyboard removed.

I find it very hard to believe that we can "gently lift up" the keyboard since it seems to sit very hard on the chassis.

Any good hints how to remove the keyboard without causing damages to the laptop? The example video I saw skipped the keyboard removal totally, maybe because the engineer used too strong language while trying to get the keyboard out ;)

I'm deciding on buying this notebook (or dell e6520), but have couple of questions for owners:
-is the model with i5 dual core less noisy than i7 quad?
-is the FHD non dreamcolor screen good enough (viewing angles) for graphic work and does it have similar spec to e6520 screen (Contrast: 669:1, brightness around 300 nits - Review Dell Latitude E6520 i7/FHD Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews)

thanks to anyone who might help me out

Well, I have a quad i7, and I can't hear it at all.

But anyway, after few months, I want to tell something, about build quality.

Main components are ok. But HP should really start to take care about minor details, like lack system for closing the lid etc.

The i5 dual core has a lower TDP than the quad core i7, so yes it is going to be quieter.

FHD screen and the e6520 screen should be fairly simmilar. The FHD is bright and looks great head on, although if you are doing professional graphic work you should get the Dreamcolor.

Anyone know where I can buy a drive caddy for the optical drive bay? Also, would the factory HDD fit into that slot/caddy or would I have to get a slimmer HDD?

I put a 256 GB SSD in but don't want to waste the WD drive that came with it.

OK Just got my 8560w and I love it... now I cannot figure out how I get faster than 54 mbps. I have an E3000 router and I tried everything to get higher than that. Any thoughts?

Hi, think here is better, sry.

What is about the sd-slot speed?
In the test of the 8540w at notebookcheck, the sd-slot speed was very slow!?

Could anyone test the speed of the sd-card slot with hwtest or something else, and can say something about it?

    Thx.

Today I made the second attempt to open up the keyboard and switch memory underneath the keyboard.

Finally managed to remove the keyboard. Pressing hard from the optical drive bay hole didn't help. Went to my kitchen and found one very thin cake decoration knife and one food knife. Thin enough to fit into that small/thin border between the chassis and keyboard. With the help of those tools I managed to force the keyboard out of it's place starting from _rear_ end (closest to the display).

Happy with 16GB RAM now, waiting for the 8GB memory module prices drop.

Your comment made me go check to see what's available. The 16GB kits (8GBx2) are only $620 (US) at crucial. So for $1240 you can have 32GB, or another 8560w. :p

Try searching ebay for "8560w" caddy. If you want the outer trim piece to match you can pop off the optical drive trim and attach it to the caddy. The factory HDD fits fine. The only fatter 3.5" drives are the newer 1 TB models, 500 GB should fit with no issues.

I am sorry if I have missed it in here but I am trying to figure out how to make my 8560W with the Quadro 2000 run 2 external monitors in addition to the native display.

    Is this possible?

    Thanks!
    Daniel

    ah i can assist here!

You need to ensure you are NOT using TKIP in the wireless security.

if it is AES(Mixed) or TKIP you will not get faster than 150Mbps

also ensure you're on N too, because sometimes it weirdly locks.

Are you using DDWRT or the original firmware?
