Guys, has anyone encountered a problem with their brightness control? Ever since I got the laptop I can't control the brightness in the OS, as long as I've got nvidia drivers. During POST or boot, I had no issues to control it, or whenever I removed all nvidia components installed on my system (including the hd audio driver). For the past couple of weeks or so though, I stopped being able to control it anywhere - it stays at whatever the hell it decides it wants it to be on and enabling/disabling the ambient light sensor doesn't change anything. I thought it's a driver issue (in fact I'm still working this angle with nVidia support L2 and HP L1), but I tried popping out my 850evo from the 8760w and swapping it with the DC3700s SSD from my 6460b, running win10, in attempt to both rule out the possibility to be a driver, or OS compatibility issue (the 8760w is running win 8.1x64), but wasn't able to control the brightness anyway.
I've tried almost all of the drivers on the hp page for both the 8760w and the quadro k3100m I've got - no change. I've tried components from different pages relating to different OS's and those that did install changed nothing either.

So the bottom line is - I'm kinda stuck... Is there any utility that controls the brightness I need to install too?

Also I don't know whether the fw on my k3100m is correct or someone has fiddled with it at some point before I got it -
I've got 80.04.e8.00.1c (according to GPU-Z). Of course HP offers no updates for neither the 8760w, nor the zbook 17 g1 (which supports the k3100m), nor the card itself, BUT I found an update component for a ws460c gen9 workstation blade for the k3100m, which in case somebody wonders have a proprietary mezzanine pcie slot, but, most of the blades (both server bl and workstations ws) use in some configurations mezz-pcie converter (the mezz slot is essentially a pcie gen2 or 3 with proprietary pin layout, so the converters are simple cards without much or any logic on them), so the ws460c gen8 and 9 seem to use a bridge like that with a standard mobile pcie k3100m. My problem is that a) the update is an ISO, which is good - it means it'll flash the fw independently from the OS, but it might very well not work on a platform other than a 460c gen8/9 (HPE server firmwares are really picky about what platforms to run on), and b) it's older than what I've got already: 80.04.0e.20.02 for gen9 and somethng older for gen8 servers. For whomever it might be interesting to: here's the download link and here're the release notes)
I managed to find newer FW on TechPowerUp, however they're from unconfirmed uploaders and that's why I'm getting a bit of a cold feet trying them without first checking:
Here's the link, where I found 80.04.F1.00.01. All IDs match, but still - unverified upload is an unverified upload and I don't wonna brick my gpu, with or without brightness control...
BTW, if someone is wondering: I've updated my BIOS from F27 to F62 today, as I was working this angle too, but no change there.

Thanks a bunch to everyone in advance

P.S. Also I seem to not be able to install the dreamcolor utility - ver. 3.0 installs, but doesn't start and all 3.1+ whine about being compatible only with DC 3.0 screens and above. v2.x installs fine, but whines about not being able to find compatible hardware. It's not that big of deal, cause I like the palette, the DC gives me as-is, but still would be interesting if I could play with it more, with my x-rite colorimeter.

I got it working by editing the HP nVIDIA .inf file and passing over any "brightness" related controls to the new nVIDIA .inf.

Got it working on the 980m, but then a series of bluescreens so I figured it was due to that. Have not had any bluescreens since I installed a fresh driver after that so..

Thanks for the tip on the metallic cooling "paste", really fixed my problem. CPU could never run over 25W before, now doing its full 55W and over whenever boost is enabled. Note to others who use electrically conductive stuff like this - use extremely small amounts as I kept getting problems booting after some of it most likely escaped around the GPU and shorted a few SMD components. No permanent harm done though.

Can you upload your inf file for reference? I have no idea where to poke for the brightness control vars. Thanks in advance!

P.S. Glad to hear the paste solved your overheating problems too :)

Hi Franek. Was it K4100M from Dell or HP? If it was Dell did you flash HP vBios from Zbook? I presume that u also modified nvidia drivers. Do you have problems with brightness ? Did u switch off signature enforcement.thx in advance.

See a lot of brightness issues with the 8760w and upgraded video cards. With a bunch of help from posts all over the place here, I’ve gotten my k4000m card (HP FW) to work great with brightness controls so thought to share my experience.

With the 3000m/4000m/5010m cards that were offered with the 8760w, you can install the newest drivers from NVIDIA and brightness would work as long as you have the hotkeys drivers from the 8760w support page. (note though that in W10, there’s a bug with the newer NVIDIA drivers in which the System and Compressed Memory task hogs the CPU ~35% and everything lags. Uninstall the NVIDIA drivers and let Win Update install a much older [354.90] driver and the bug should be gone. I reported the bug but don’t expect a fix)

The newer kx000m cards (and others it seems), as many peeps have already reported, won’t have brightness working. It seems HP customized the FW or the newer cards have various standards so you will need the HP customized NVIDIA drivers (FYI, I tried newer 8770w HP HotKeys drivers and lots of versions of NVIDIA drivers and that didn’t help). With any drivers from NVIDIA/Windows Update, the build in brightness slider would adjust according to F9 and F10, but the actual brightness will be stuck at 100%. For my k4000m on HP firmware (and this should work for other kx000m cards), I downloaded the newest 361.80 drivers from the HP page for the 8770w (which came with the kx000m series). And as you’ve read, you won’t be able to install it since the .inf specifies exact models with specific cards (e.g. 8770w and k4000m) that can install this set of drivers. So you will need to mod the .inf file. Thanks to user Gloin, here’s a very useful page that helped me: http://null-bin.blogspot.ca/2015/08/how-to-modify-nvidia-notebook-driver.html It’s really not too bad as long as you double check your edits. (You can PM me for the modded .inf for the HP k4000m in the 8760w. You can just replace this file under the Display.Driver folder and that should be it.)

You also need to install the modded drivers by disabling device driver signing in Windows (you modded the drivers so they’re no longer signed and Windows is worried). Here’s some info if needed: http://www.technipages.com/enable-disable-device-driver-signing FYI, installing with the “Have Disk” method doesn’t work; you need to boot up with device driver signing off (option 7) and then installing your modded drivers.

Brightness is working great for me now. Thank you, Gloin again (thank him here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/hp-elitebook-8760w-owners-lounge.581056/page-98#post-10117679 ) This should be similar for other cards as well; you probably need to find HP drivers for your card (looking at whichever model might originally be released with your target upgrade card). And if you’re on Dell/other firmware, you might want to get onto HP firmware first? Sorry, I didn't have to flash so I have no experience there.

P.s. anyhow, didn’t figure this out all by myself. Had lots of help here. THANK YOU to you all!

UPDATE: seems like after installing modded NVIDIA drivers from HP, you can then install/update with newest drivers from NVIDIA's website. I didn't check the "clean installation" box when updating and the brightness toggles still work great after. I'm on 368.39 with no issues now.

Quick question about the HP Elitebook 8760W, Are the dual core systems comparable with upgrading the gpu to like a 780m or 880m on the mobo? Also, Is the CPU upgradable to a quad core CPU. I already know the ram limits and amount of ram slots between both models, QuadCore: 4x slots 32Gb max, Dual core 16Gb max. I do also know you have to edit the driver files.

The dual core models have single heatpipe heatsinks, but the board is afaik 1:1 the same besides the lacking two extra memory slots o'course, which means that besides any pottential overheating or thermal throttling issues don't see why not. Mine is dualcore board with 2670qm and a k3100m, so both have been upgraded without any problems. Well, i had high temperatures under load so i got myself a nice quadcore heatsink and that took care of the temp issue, but it worked without it too.

    Cheers,
    V

Just wanted to report that I replaced the 900p screen with a 1080p from an MSI 1763. Most LED backlit 17.3" screens with 40pin connectors should work but this one was a B173HW02 V.1 HW:5b FW: 1. Pretty good brightness and 90%+ sRGB gamut. Not too bad for the price. Also, on first bootup, you get some weird repeated screen issues, but a reboot fixes it.

Apologies if this question has already been asked, but I've been though the thread and can't see the answer.

I'm just trying to find out if my 3000m card will run a 4K monitor using the Club3D DP1.2 to HDMI2.0 adapter?
If so, is it able to run at the 60Hz specified or is the card only good for 30Hz.

    Thanks.

So, does anyone know if it's possible to unlock turbo controls and multipliers on this machine for the 2920xm/2960xm processors?

I'm thinking of upgrading from my 2820qm, but if I cant OC, the increase in performance will be minimal with the 2920xm, and the 2960xm is quite expensive right now

Vbios version is 80.04.F4.00.07, in ebay it was advertised as "Dell Alienware M18X M17x Nvidia Geforce GTX 880 Video Card GTX880M 8GB CXC7W".

Was able to get temperatures in control too, had to remove a dust filter below the cooler to get more air in. This is a 122w tdp card and the HP thermal solution is rated for 100w. Had to buy a laptop cooling pad also, http://www.coolermaster.com/mobile/notepal-all-notepals/notepal-xl/ is working well.

Before the mentioned improvements the gpu was throttling alot and was not giving steady FPS.

I have a strange issue. I've upgraded my 8760m to an Nvidia gtx 840m and 16GB ram and I'm running a 2670qm cpu. I bought two more 8 gb sticks of ram and the laptop won't even post when they are added. In order to test the new ram I removed the 16 GB I was running and booted with just the new ram......it booted fine. I then booted with one of my old 8 GB sticks of ram and one new one and it booted fine. If I add one chip to either one of the empty slots after booting successfully with just 16 GB of ram (in other words trying to boot with 3 sticks of ram installed for a total of 24 GB) the laptop won't post. If I fill all four slots with identically specced ram....the laptop won't post.......is there anything else I can try to make 32 GB of ram work?

That's a HUGE if, as it seems. There's RX 480 MXM though, but it's "a bit" on the power(cooling) hungry side - 150W.

Nope, it just came-up a few days ago, a few Chinese are trying it out in different machines, but no luck so far. I guess the way our DreamColor is wired and how our machines omit Enduro/Optimus while with DC, this GPU should work, but we'll never know till someone tries. I'm a bit hesitant to shop from TaoBao, otherwise I would've tried.

Seems fine if you ask me. There was a post in another forum, where a guy literary put a whole syringe of paste on the CPU, the difference was in the margin of error compared to a perfect application.

Has anyone tried the Gtx 965m with the HP Elitebook 8760w with the heatsink solution for the Fire Pro M5950? If so is it possible that i can have your drivers, or how do i find the HP values for the gtx 965m. and how do i flash a video bios for it? Do you have to flash the vbios on a diffrent laptop, or can you do it on the same laptop you are going to use the gfx card on? I seen that someone put a gtx 965m in the HP Elitebook 8560w. As seen here:

Alright, I see that the values are in the videos and it appears that he flashes it from the laptop itself. But what I don't know is how many lines of text (Values) i have to put into the nvbil.ini file. By examing other files I see that it's only in there one time, But im not sure as im a noob when it comes to understanding how ini files work as in editing it, I do have some experence with yml files cause of my Minecraft Server.

Hello guys, and gals. Iv'e been doing research on the on the nvidia driver ini edits and im having some problems with finding a ID for where the '????' is I don't know where to find this number but for the most part I figured it out, Heres what i got so far for the Nvidia driver file for the Hp Elitebook 8760w: NVIDIA_DEV.????.1630.103C I know that 1630 is for this laptop model, and that 103c is HP, But I have no clue where to find the part where the ????'s are, If you can help me with this I'd be glad to post my results on how i will get a GTX 780m to work in my laptop (HP Elitebook 8760W)

I'm not sure how you do it, but let me tell you how I do it and works every time (780m on 8740w including). Open your Device Manager and check the Hardware IDs. For example 8740w with K3000m results in PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11BE&SUBSYS_1520103C where 1520 is for 8740w and 103C for HP (you already know that, but for someone who doesn't). Now search in the ini files for 10DE&DEV_11BE (again, example, yours would be different) and edit everything behind it, at every occurrence in every ini that has it, with your data - &SUBSYS_1520103C, or just 1520103C. Don't forget to save. It should install now.

Thank you, I figured it out, For my specific model (HP EliteBook 8760w) it's NVIDIA_DEV.119f.1630.103c, for the GTX 780m and for the GTX 770m it's NVIDIA_DEV.11E0.1630.103C. If anyone on here needs it I'll get all nvidia graphics cards models on up to the 10 series. Speaking of 10 Series GTX cards, Has anyone tried out a gtx 1060 mxm in the Elitebook 8760w?

According to this whitepaper ( http://international.download.nvidi...al/pdfs/GeForce_GTX_1080_Whitepaper_FINAL.pdf ) there is no support for LVDS in the 10xx series...

So it will be a bit game of chance to get it running, depending how the display is wired to the mobo.. If I'm correct, the 8760/70 have LVDS and eDP on the connector, the regular screens are LVDS, while the DreamColor has an "color board", which converts the signal.

According to the thread about the dreamcolor display upgrade the matrix is ( http://www.panelook.com/LP173WF3-SLB3_LG Display_17.3_LCM_overview_15557.html) LVDS, and the chip is http://www.st.com/en/display-controllers/stdp8028.html which cannot take LVDS input but outputs to LVDS. So, the connector of the 8770 should be able to output display port, I guess?

Theoretically, I guess it shouldn't work with regular display matrix, but it might run with a dreamcolor one...

hey guys, i just upgraded my old 8760w dual core/5950 with one 980M.
I got the 2 pipes heat sink and the drivers (347.26) from this Chinese forum (only one i got working).
I tried a lot of others drivers but nothing worked except this one (sometimes it installed just fine but black screen of color lines appeared).
I can deal with an older driver but I can t get this f*** brightness control working, i just read the 114 pages but no one is giving a clear answer...
    Can someone help me ?

edit: forgot to mention, I m on Win7.

I don't know for 8760, I'm on 8770 with same GPU and everything works just fine with self modded inf (followed this guide: http://null-bin.blogspot.de/2015/08/how-to-modify-nvidia-notebook-driver.html).

Mine is not closing his left lock/tooth of the display. It just won't 'click'. Anyone know fixes for that? I've removed the top cover and inspected it, but couldn't find anything....

This maybe a bit off topic but anyone noticed that not all the dreamcolor screens have that graininess.
( it will kinda look like a rainbow when scrolling or moving your head really fast.)
I had about 3 8760w all with dreamcolor screens and I noticed that 2 of them weren't grainy at all.
I open up the grainy and non-grainy screen thinking it must be a different model number but they were the same.

    weird.

So, I got a 2960xm for my 8760w, and I think it's not quite worth the money for this laptop. It cannot be overclocked and at least in my case, the chip runs very hot. ~55 degrees idle, ~70 degrees under moderate load and it goes all the way to 94 degrees under prime95.

My 2820qm ran about 10 degrees lower.

I reckon if you don't want heat issues, the 2860qm is the best quad core to go with - thanks to TurboBoost, it will run at about the same clocks as a 2920/60xm under load.

Anyone with an XM chip care to share their temperatures? Thanks!

What thermal paste are you using? Can you try to overclock with ThrottleStop? Or XTU (unlikely though, since it's BIOS dependent and EliteBook's BIOSes are locked and cut from any overclocking, but that's kinda understandable)?

Is there a manufacturing date? I guess they had different supplier for the matte filter, or different batch. That's the only explanation I have.

idk... All I know is at some point they did something different with the matte filter.
I tried to look for a date but didn't find any.
Originally I thought that maybe it was a different screen all together.
Like I've seen lp173wf3(sl)(b1) though lp173wf3(sl)(b4) panels on the net.

    But nope both lp173wf3(sl)(b2)

I wonder if the newer laptops with dreamcolors screens by LG still have this issue?

DreamColors are only one model. The variation might be the DELL version (PremierColor). Quite likely they have changed the filter, the question is when?

Hi. Will a NVIDIA Geforce GTX 960m N16P-GX-A2 fit into the HP 8760w? Would I need anything else physically to make it fit?

    I have the I7-2620m 1600x1050 version with Quadro 3000m

Sounds to me that the matrix is done. I'm not talking specifically about the DC screens, but I've had experience over the years variety of Dell and HP enterprise monitors. Sometimes after some time the matrix simply becomes grainy for whatever reason/defect. The remedy is recycling of the whole monitor or replacement of the matrix, which might be a pricey endeavor with a DC matrix...

If it's standard (pinout compliant) MXM 3.0a it should physically fit. Whether it will actually work or not is a different story. Depends on the source of the card, as not all of them work out of the box, so you might need to flash a specific vBIOS and surely mod the INF files of driver to get it working. Read around this thread and the dedicated thread about video card swapping for more information on the topic.

    Nah
Nah it's a know issue with dreamcolor displays that goes wayyy back with some reporting this issue even with new units. I myself have never owned a new dreamcolor but have owned about 10 dreamcolor displays ( 4 8760w, 2 8560 ,2 8570w ,2 8740) and they all had it. With the exception of 2 of them from the 8760w and one of those had a stuck pixel and "screen humming " so I returned it.

The one I have now is perfect.I got it from a 8760w I bought from a laptop refurber for $200 shipped pretty sweet deal. Then I just swapped it in to my 8770w pretty easy since the 8760w has the same case as the 8770w.

Has anyone tried one of the new Gtx 10 series in the Hp Elitebook 8760w? I think by tdp restrictions it would be able to handle a 1050 1050ti 1060 but not the 1070 1080 1080TI or anything like that (All are in mxm form factors)

No, they are not MXM. Only the msi 1060 is MXM-B, msi's 1070 is "inflated" MXM-B, there's also "inflated" 1080 from GT83VR (both of which might fit with some grinding) and finally there's the really odd GT73VR 1080. All clevo 10 series are non-standard. There's one more 1070, from Zotac, but you'll have to buy a whole PC (~$1300), and whether it would work remains to be seen. Since I mentioned working, all of the 10 series, no matter the shape, lack LVDS, so if you are after trying one, you have to have DC panel (since it's DP).

Yea I was thinking that about the 1070 and 1080 they wouldnt work cause they are too big and, Those are also too high of tdp I believe.

Well @RMSMajestic tested the 1060 and it doesn't work with 8740w's DC. At least that's the current development on the matter. Hopefully we can fix it and/or it might work for you (8760w DC) straight away, but that's the only information I'm aware of so far.

What does DC mean? is that a abbreviation for Dual Core, That's the only thing I can come up with besides type of lcd panel. I have the quad core version of the Hp Elitebook 8760w Its also non-dream color.

Around here (hp's business systems) it's mostly* used for DreamColor :)

*Actually I'm yet to see another use, maybe there was one occasion of user using it to denote dual-core.
