It isn't particularly hard for a large OEM like HP to order a custom sodimm chip like this. I think Sony used to do a similar thing for some of their thin and lights, and those used an odd shorter sodimm layout. At least it is modular so if an 8GB version of it comes out in a year, you should be able to upgrade.

If you have to ask why they did this - it could have been over the sake of a millimetre or two. Maybe the marketing department decided that in order to sell this machine they wanted to be able to advertise it being over 5% thinner than the previous model or something. We are already talking in tenths of millimetres with these subnotebooks - so from an engineering standpoint considering some component that is two millimetres thicker than another is a pretty big deal. My guess is statistically they determined that more people would buy this machine if it were thinner than the competition's, rather than optionally being upgradeable to 12GB of ram. With both the Elitebook 840 and Zbook 14 available as well it doesn't make sense to sacrifice the thinness of their "thin" model either.

I am far more confused about their decision to put dual cooling fans in this machine. The heatpipes must be pretty thin if it needs two of them to properly dissipate the heat from the 15W processor.. and even then the notebookcheck review says it still throttles!

That is interesting, and thank you for that insight.

Dual cooling fans are getting more and more popular in ultrabooks. Acer, and ASUS are doing it with their high-end ultrabooks too. Perhaps two individual units can be made thinner than a single large one, or make the design simpler? Not too impressed with HP's implementation though. There is still throttling, and the base heats up considerably under load such as MATLAB programming what-not. Not to mention the fan clicking noise issue that came on the first batches of this.

It looks to me like one fan is smaller. I wonder if they do that to allow another level of "quite" cooling? I have to say, I haven't had any issues with heat or with throttling, but I haven't been using it as a workstation, either. Which CPU do you have? And is it set to use passive heat control in the power management settings?

I've got the i5-4300U. I have to admit Haswell U series is pretty good. With MPC-HC + codecs as the main media player even huge video files don't make it break a sweat. Even a little picture editing in Photoshop doesn't consume too much CPU. But with number crunching softwares that I use for assignments, etc like MATLAB and Proteus it does get a bit warm, but that's about, like, 20% of my workload anyway so heating and throttling isn't a very significant issue.

Passively cooled on battery, actively cooled when connected to supply. Fan always on with AC enabled in BIOS.

Throttling is dynamic frequency scaling. Your CPU doesn't work at the same speed all the time. Usually, Intel processors have something known as TurboBoost which automatically overclocks your CPU if there is enough thermal headroom. If the CPU gets hotter than a certain threshold, the CPU is downclocked to reduce heat production or save power; that is known as throttling. Of course you may or may not see any visible difference in performance when this happens, it depends on what you're doing at the time.

Does anyone know the correct part number to upgrade the RAM? I ordered a genuine HP part, however it's too big and rubs on the casing. According to the HP engineer, the RAM needs to be low profile

Does anyone know if this model is available in China/Beijing or if not if there's any plans to release it here and when? Ive tried to email the HP China webshop but so far not gotten any reply.
Or maybe someone has any other idea how to get one here (china/beijing)?

Today, a friend linked me to the PCMag review [ HP Elitebook Folio 1040 G1 Review & Rating | PCMag.com ] of the Folio, because it says this:

How can it be accessed? I feel like a noob.

Update: Just contacted Box and they handed me the storage.

Hi, can you please confirm this?
I'm interested in the 1920x1080 version and I'm asking cause the official website does not mention the IPS panel, 14" diagonal LED-backlit FHD anti-glare UWVA slim (1920 x 1080) is the only specification i can read.
Furthermore, I'm not able to find any review stating anything clearly.
    Thanks a lot.

That's a slot for a micro SIM card for mobile data connectivity. I don't know if it can be purchased without an HSPA data card, but there are two types of it. The Qualcomm one gives up to 4G/LTE connectivity. The one I have is the HP Broadband module which goes up to HSPA+.

SIM card slot. The Micro-SD port is on the left side of the unit, between the smart card slot and a USB port. On the right it is SIM, mic, USB, DisplayPort, Dock, power.

Can you also confirm that the microphone/headphone combo input also works with just the classical headphone (without the microphone) jack?

It doesn't surprise me that Apple uses a different implementation from anyone else. So I would advise avoiding any "made for iPhone/iPad" headphones, as the mics on those units will probably only work for Apple products (at least that is *my* experience, and believe me I have sampled several as finding a non-iDevice mic'ed headset in a store is all but impossible).

I plugged a Sennheiser HD201S in to my Folio and it worked fine. I also plugged in a Klipsch earbud/mic (non-iPhone model) and it worked fine for both earbuds and mic.

Does anyone have the E8E17PA model with the FHD 1920x1080 display? If so, what resolution options do you have?

The reason I ask, I've got the E7N24PA with the following spec:
    1). 14" diagonal LED-backlit HD+ anti-glare SVA flat (1600 x 900)
    2). Intel HD Graphics 4400

I have two resolution choices only, 1600x900 or 1024x768.

Is anyone else having problems with the new ForcePad drivers? Seems like if I install anything newer than the (very) old 17.0.18.8 drivers, the touchpad stops working. Tapping still works, but anything related to 'force' stops working. I even tried the firmware update thing, and still having this issue with all newer drivers. Which sucks because the 17.0.18.8 drivers have strangely high CPU usage (like 11% or so! which is absurd. 1080p video takes less CPU than that!).

Anyone know how to solve this?

Edit: Oh, yeah, just thought I'd mention. I posted this on the HP Support forums but I got no responses in two weeks. Nobody is helpful there -_- NBR is much better.

You should update the Intel graphics driver I should think. From Intel website directly. I've got the 900p panel and I've got like 5-6 choices between 1600x900 and 1024x768/

Word of note to anyone trying this, don't download the exe, download the zip from Intel and run the update manually.

Yessir. I just update the drivers over the current ones. Fixes itself on its own on the old driver with the same settings. Hardware defect maybe? Seems unlikely.

Yeah, hard to say it's hardware when it works with one driver and not another. Other than maybe trying the "Reset Device" button I don't know what else you can try. Although I did notice that if you click on the Synaptics system tray icon it pops up a menu with a bunch of enable/disable buttons, so that's another place to check.

Can you open a ticket or a chat with HP Support? They've been pretty good with me on some issues with my 8560w.

I got two problems with my EliteBook 1040, wondering if someone has had the same problem.

First I can say the 128GB micro-SD from SanDisk works. But the problem is that after putting the microSD in, I cant take it out... stupid question but how do you take out the card? I have been trying everything almost.

Second, my Logitech MX mouse has a long lag time and works very unstable... any experience there?

The micro-SD card should spring-eject. Push it in a bit farther until it clicks, then it should pop out. You'll probably have to use a finger/thumb nail to push it in until it releases.

I just tried to create a recovery drive in Windows 8.1 and noticed the "copy recovery partition option from the PC to the recovery drive" option is grayed out. Any idea why? I would like to have that on there in case I have a complete HD failure.

Disappointing ... I received my loaded spec 1040 today. While the fit and finish was perfect, the bottom edge of the screen had two unacceptable bright spots that were clearly noticeable (especially on darker colors). I'm not sure if this was an exception with the 1080 display or the norm, but what a way to ruin an otherwise perfect laptop. I called HP and the same build is on backorder with a 20+ day TA time for an exchange. I had to pass, as this machine was also delayed and I'm pressed for time. So disappointing. It seems that the screen has become the Achilles heel on otherwise high end laptops. Even the Mac book Pro retina display has its fair share of problems / complaints.

PLEASE someone create a screen that doesn't have backlight issues like all of these "high-end" IPS displays! Good grief.

i got this notebook as a refurb last week

overall i like it, however i have 3 problems (in order of severity)

    1) wireless adapter sometimes won't wake up from sleep (seems to be common on intel 7260)

    2) brightness hotkeys sometimes don't work after sleep (others had this problem -- latest driver doesn't fix it)

    3) small bright spots at bottom of screen. i think the hing is screwed too tightly to the lcd frame, which is pushing on the back of the lcd and making the spots. i had it happen on my old laptop when i screwed too tightly after replacing old hinges. the spots on the 1040 are small and not a big enough deal to return it -- most people probably wouldn't even notice it.

by far the most annoying problem is the issues this sometimes has after waking from sleep.

vs. Thinkpad X1 carbon (2014 haswell model)

    Hello HP 1040 guys,

Hows everyone's experience with this Folio 1040 so far? Still very satisfied with it?

Is the real world battery life 7 hrs+?

    Fan-noise near silent?

If anyone has any insight on how it compares with Thinkpad X1 carbon yr2014 haswell version?

    thanks very much guys!

    Hi khawarspirit.
I've recently bought this ultrabook and, surprisingly, I noticed this "click - click" noise too... your answer could be very helpful!

I've found this pic: http://goo.gl/kLaIOT. Could you please give us more details about what you've done exactly?
Maybe it's not the same problem but you talked about the left fan... it's the right one in the pic, right? And... which screw you fixed with the paper?

Thanks again for your helpful suggestions ;)

You can check out our reviews of both models:
    Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (2014)
    HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1

The EliteBook should get about six hours usage realistically for normal tasks and reduced screen brightness, almost identical to the X1 Carbon. I'd take the 1040 any day over the X1 because it has a far superior keyboard. No one seems to know what Lenovo was thinking when they designed the X1 Carbon's keyboard. The Broadwell version went back to a standard keyboard if that's any indicator.

I opened my ultrabook and i can say that the click noise is not from the fans, they run perfectly.
It seems it cames from the battery instead, from its loose coating... I think i should put some thickness to press it a little bit...

    Any further comment?

I have the i5, 256, 8 RAM folio and it is eerily silent. Very solid, very fast, very comfortable. However mine cam with an orange/red lid. It's a lovely color but I cannot find any reference to this from HP or any other source. Also can't get the LTE to respond, is there a fix for that? Tx

The only advantage i see the X1 Carbon having is that its 2.8 lbs for the HD+ non-touch version. That makes it very easy to carry around.

However, now that i found out that the Folio G1 can actually hold 12GB ram, also way superior build quality...i'll take the 3.3 lbs weight for a superior overall laptop :)

6 hrs should be good enough. I found that a person rarely ever goes past that amount of time of straight usage / work :)

    thanks again!

    hello Wins32asmguy,

I just got clarification that 8GB ram stick would work for 12GB ram.

Can you further expand on the 'double sided sodimm' issue? Does this mean 4GB ddr3l ram is single sided and 8gb ram has to be double sided?

    thank you!
