Hello everyone, I am the proud new owner of an HP 4530s laptop, I got it from CompUSA (online) for 699.99$US.

I got the Core i7 Unit, with 4gb RAM, 500Gb HD and BlueRay Drive, its not my first HP or even HP laptop I upgraded from a 6910p.

I am very happy with the unit, except that it does not seem to have the USB 3.o! I upgraded RAM to 8Gb (gotta love $20.oo sticks of DDR3!) and a Sata2 128Gb SSD, I want to eventually upgrade to a SATA3 256Gb SSD, does anyone know if this laptop has Sata3 controller? According to the Chipset specs it should.

I used SiSoftware Sandra Lite on my 4430s to confirm that it has a SATA III controller. The 4530s should be no different.

When you're ready to sell let me know :D

I was trying to get this deal before it expired but I was too late. The price is back up now and I don't live in a state where there is a compusa.

Radeon 6490, nothing special really, but switchable with the Intel Chipset Graphics to save power.

So I randomly just decided to update my touchpad driver on the 4530s (haven't done an update since september). WOW! I must say I am pretty impressed at the increased sensitivity to scrolling and pinching to zoom etc. I would recommend updating as well if you haven't done so in a while.

New to this forum. HP 'Tech Support' was unable to help me 'activate' QuickWeb when I first got the ProBook 4530s, despite hours on the phone, with 'support teams' in 2 nations, so I am posting my problem here (they told me that Explorer 8, the Explorer 9 were the 'cause' of this!)
Have the basic Intel Core i3 processor, standard factory software suite.
After the 2-month Norton AV coverage ended, I deleted the program completely, as the Microsoft Security Essentials site directed, and installed that instead: all seems to be working well, with all the features the Norton AV had.
The problem: many times now, I will be in the middle of composing a reply or new email message in YahooMail 'Classic', when I lose key letter-case control, cursor control, highlighting control. Nothing on the keyboard is 'locked'. Attempts at highlighting the error, or the sentence, does not work: the entire paragraph, or the whole page, is highlighted. If I renew the page, I get bumped to the log-in page as should happen, my username is still 'remembered', but the correct password is not accepted, whether caps is on or not. I have to restart the laptop, which still takes about 2-3 minutes.
I suspect that YM is the problem, Yahoo has a 'contact us/feedback' page, but anything submitte there is ignored. I have had YM for over 10 years, many emails I wish to retain, but I dunno how to import this to GMail.
If anyone has had a similar experience with YM or another email service, or recognizes what this is or how to troubleshoot or correct this, I would be very grateful for any stab at it.
Based on other more rare slowdowns, I am wondering now if the Intel i3 is maybe still underpowered, and that a ProBook with the i5 might not experience this. The HD is 320 MB, not the now standard 500 MB.
Appreciate any time taken with this issue in advance. Thanks very much!

    @Jamoke60

Regarding importing YM mails into the gmail account... It is very easy and simple (if you have not tried it yet)...This is a guide I found googling:

    - Select Settings in Gmail.
    - Go to the Accounts and Import tab.
    - Click Import mail and contacts.
    - If you have previously imported mail, click Import from another address.
    - Type your Yahoo! Mail address under What account do you want to import from?.
    - Click Continue.
    - Enter your Yahoo! Mail password under Enter the password for [email protected]:.
    - Click Continue.
    - Make sure Import contacts and Import mail are checked.
    - To have messages that arrive at your Yahoo! Mail address automatically appear in your Gmail inbox for a month, check Import new mail for next 30 days.
    - Optionally, check Add label to all imported mail:.
    - This label lets you easily spot all imported mail in one place. You can always remove the label from individual messages later or delete it altogether.
    - Messages imported from Yahoo! Mail folders other than your Inbox will automatically get a label derived from the folder name. All mail imported from your Yahoo! Mail "Clients" folder will bear the "Migrated/Clients" label after import, for example.
    - Mail in your Drafts, Trash and Spam folders will not be imported.
    - All messages and contacts will of course still be available in Yahoo! Mail after the import has finished.
    - Click Start import.
    - Click OK.

Does this imply that you think it is a Yahoo, and not a flaw in my HP?

Let me reform the question in light of an observation I've made wrt some of the most recent posts above.
I notice that most posters here seem to have opted for the most powerful i7 processor.
This is my first laptop that I bought relatively quickly to respond to an HP-advertised 'super deal', so I didn't research this much.
Wrt to the email problem as I have described it, do you think that an upgrade to the i5 or i7 might have eleminated the 'hang-ups'/'freezes' that I describe above?
Or do you think that the flaw resides in Yahoo.Mail and not in the processing power of the i3?

Processing power of your Core i3 is more than just enough for your tasks... So I would exclude that option...
It might be up to the Yahoo... Also I could not notice which internet browser are you using when experiencing such an issue? Did you try using different browsers? Also is it happening only with yahoo?
From my experience, I have these similar "freezes" sometime, and that "sometime" is only when I open one certain web-site (which btw has a lot of flash content) and I choose opening a link in a new tab...And it is worth to mention that this issue is happening only when I am browsing this certain web-site through Google Chrome but not when using other browsers (such as Firefox or Internet Explorer)...

    Hope this was useful...

    Cheers :)

i bought one of the 4530s lj532 from tiger direct also.. and can confirm it does not have a usb 3.0 port.. Bummmer. but then again an i7 500 gig 7200 hard drive, radeon 6490, fingerprint reader, windows 7 professional machine with blue ray reader/dvd burner. for 699 - 28 fatwallet cashback = 671 + 20 or so for an extra 4 gig of memory for a total of 8 gig cannot really be beat. so i cannot complain too much.. also noticed that when running prime95 cannot really get over 2.6 with all cores due to heat.. anyone else notice this?

i too bought one from TG the LJ532UT and is does NOT have usb 3.0 as advertised

called hp, they said it supposed to have according to serial # and model #

    something is not right,

but think i'll keep it, as i got it for 699- the $28 fatwallet, + 19.99 8gb ram

this seems like a great deal at under $700, about 1/3 cost of a macbook pro :)

i really wish it has the USB3.0, BUMMER !!!

i also have a feeling that maybe this is why the price was so good. somehow they made a batch of these with an incorrect older motherboard that didnt have the usb 3 and sold off the batch to tiger direct at a substantial discount..

if you bought one of these and didnt get the tiger direct rip off warranty you might want to consider getting the one i got .. there is a 3 year promo warranty part number

Item# Mfg Part#/Description Quantity Unit Price Extended Price

    *155602 UZ279E 1 209.00 209.00
HP 3y NBD Onsite + ADP PROMO NB Only SVC

this is actually a pretty good deal for an onsite warranty for 3 years with adp which is accidental damage protection in case you drop it or dump liquids on it.
same thing on dell is like over 400 bucks.

@Arminator: As stated in my descrip, my HP came with Expl 8, which I upgrd to Expl 9 as directed. I did not install or try other browsers; I can't see a reason for this, how/why Chrome or Firefox are better or diff re: this problem.
The prob only occurs as descrbd when replyg/composg messages in YahooM, nowhere else. It happens freqtly enough to slow down my work.
I don't see this anywhere else, no idea about the example you give; I am not a gamer, just upgrd'd from an old Dell and suprised at this glitch. Will import everything in my YMail acct to Gmail, as suggested.

Has anyone found a fix yet for the always on fan issue? So far I've tried speedfan as well as hwinfo32/64 and have had no luck with either. It seems like a waste of energy running a fan like this while remaining completely idle.

I did not want to discuss which is best (since it is more or less a personal taste) :)...
I would try different browsers just for the curiosity if it is happening when using these too (and that would be an easy way to check what might be causing these freezes)... For example, if the issue isnt happening when using Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari etc (hope someone won t mind if I skipped some :)), that it is definitely a IE problem...Also if it occurs when using these too, I would re-install Windows and check it to... And if it would occur again after the re-install than it should be a hardware problem probably (but anyway I dont think that is a problem in this case)...
Also, regarding CPU, well for everyday tasking such as office and internet browsing and watching movies, a modern Celeron (1 core/1 thread) would be just enough, not to mention the core i3 you have (2 cores/4 threads)...So it could not and should not be caused by a slow performance PC... ;)

I hope I made it a bit more clear :)

    Cheers ;)

    @Arminator:

"I hope I made it a bit more clear :)"

Yes Sir, thanks very much for the addl comments: will try all those things.
It's clear from your reply that you have a real understanding of the hardware involved here as well, the CPU design and architecture: gives me motivation to learn more.
Along the lines of CPU operation, I have a quick question. I stumbled upon:

    Desktop gadgets - Microsoft Windows

-most of the stuff here is just novelty fluff, but I spotted a widget called 'CPU Meter', which I keep running now on the desktop. Just as you indicated, the 'CPU meter barely bumps above 5-10%.
However, could you please explain WHY the 'RAM usage meter' hovers around ~ 45% when the laptop is totally idle?
Is this why I read that everyone posting here tells of adding another 8 GB of RAM to their new purchase of an HP?
Curious to know about this, when time permits. Thanks.

Take a look at the memory section of the resource monitor. You'll see that Windows 7 cahces RAM. What is listed as "Standby" is RAM that Windows 7 is caching. It's technically "free" in that it's not being used by any programs or processes other than the caching.

    320GB HDD 7200rpm,

i have the "Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter" in my 4530s,

and i was thinking to buy a wireless router to benefit from the "n" , but i have read that this Atheros wireless card does not work well on wireless-N speeds,

any one can confirm that ?

would i better save the money and stay with wireless-G ?

anybody have tested this card, and how much is the actual throughtput mbps?

My general rule of thumb is this: if you need a product and can afford it, get it. Otherwise, you're always waiting on something.

Same thing happened to me, but when I called HP they confirmed that the model 4530s LJ532UT should have the USB 3.0 port and gave me a "Defective Case Number" to give to CircuitCity (TigerDirect) where I purchased mine. CC has emailed me a pre paid overnight return label and will be sending me out a new 4530s with the USB 3.0 included. HP says that with my case number if the new unit comes without the advertised 3.0 port then they will replace it themselves with one that does.

I asked HP tech about using a 34mm PCIe port converter to get USB 3.0 on my 4530s that came without the USB 3.0 port and was told that the 34mm slot would give no better speed with the port converter than a USB 2.0 port would. I had thought about just buying the port converter after reading about it here a number of pages back instead of going through the hassle of returning my laptop. But after hearing about the speed limitation from HP decided to just go ahead and get a unit with the onboard USB3.0 instead.

ya i thought about doing that.. more than once. but the time i would spend re-configuring the laptop and re-installing all my apps and . is just not worth it for the 1 or 2 times a year i would use something that needs usb 3.0 , my phone memory cards wouldnt use it. and my backups are done via backup exec and i plug in to hardwired ethernet for that.

i can almost guarantee you are going to have to go through this twice as the replacement from cc/tiger will be the same.. since they were gotten in the same batch (my box says some number x out of 250 sent to tiger direct), and then you will need to go through hp again. but keep us informed please.

If you can find a god deal on eBay, the Wintec Filemate Go expresscard SSDs are decent replacemnts for USB 3. My 24 gig model gets 115/65 MB read/write speeds.

I have always found that i get better throughput with G over N and better range because G adapters can have a single antenna input. I use a buffalo whr hp 54 adapter with a big 20db outdoor antenna and dd-wrt software. I get 30mb sustained transfers over wireless from upstairs through two walls and one floor. In my tests with N in this environment I couldnt get near as good.

I'm a little worried about that as well, but mine was #231 out of 310 and they were all sold out the day after I ordered mine, so the current batch is different than mine came in on and HP said that any new stock of our model should have the USB3.0 included. Worse case is I have to send the 2nd one back to HP directly and they will replace it with the correct configuration per their "Defective Case" policy. At least that is what I was told...

    I just upgraded my 4530s from a 128Gb Sata2 SSD to to a 256Gb Sata3 SSD, but I have run into a little bit of a problem;

I clone'd the old SSD to the new one using Acronis, but now the system gives the following error on cold boot:

    Boot Device not Found

Please install operating system on your hard disc.

    Hard Disk (3F0)

    F2 System Diagnostic

If I press ESC, the system will go to the test screen and pres ESC again windows comes up and runs fine, shutdown is a little slow/long.

I tried running the Windows 7 64bit Repair option, and I tried aligning the disc with Paragon Alignment Tool Version 2.o, which by the way, only was able to align the hidden windows partition.

So what can I do to fix this, I really don't want to re-install the OS, as it took me two days to get the Bloat-Ware off the machine and the programs that I want on the machine.

I have a Probook 4430s LJ 764PA (india retail)? It is the base model with 2GB of RAM and the usual.

It uses the LP 140WH1 matte screen and I find it to have very fine vertical gray lines running throughout the monitor. At first glance, it doesn't show but after a while you realize it. It isn't very visible at more than 1.5 feet. However, it is pretty disturbing. I can't clearly photograph though. It's something like a fine vertical mesh/grid running thoughout. At first, i thought i was the gap between two pixels but it doesn't appear so.

I have a 30-day replacement and I can get it replaced if it is defective. Is the LCD actually defective or is it supposed to be like that? Could somebody help me with this?

    Hey,

I bought a 4530s i5 yesterday. At the same time i wanted to change the disc to af sata3 SSD HDD.

So i decided to clone my HDDs with EaseUs Clone. It worked fine until I checked to see if HP Recovery worked. It says it can't see the recovery disc??

Do You have any experience with that?

I have also posted a screendump of the disc's

Hope someone have a great idea for it to work again :)

I thought the Probook 4530s supported the PCIe version 2.0 standard port which carries speeds of up to 5 Gb/s? How then a usb 3.0 PCIe card would not give better speed than the usb 2-0 port?

OK so here is what I learned from this install of the SSD in my HP 4350s:

I originally Shrunk (using gParted) the factory installed 500 Gb Hard Drive to fit in on a Mushkin 120Gb (Sata2) Drive, this actually seem to work pretty well, but when I ordered a new Crucial Technology M4 256Gb (Sata3) SSD, cloning the 120Gb drive to the 256 Drive just did not work correctly!

So I Decided to do a fresh install, after doing a fresh install and applying all the Patches and Service Packs to the install and using the HP Factory Restore Disk for the drivers, the machine still did not work correctly in ATA/IDE mode or AHCI Mode. ACHI mode would actually BSOD the machine, erratic behavior and just general problems overall.

Turns out (and this is the important part) that there is a Microsoft Knowledge Base article and 'Fix It' for this problem:

Error message when you start a Windows 7 or Windows Vista-based computer after you change the SATA mode of the boot drive: "STOP 0x0000007B INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE"

If you re-install and start the machine in ATA/IDE mode and apply this patch/fix, restart the machine, jump into Bios and set the controller back to ACHI, everything works!

Any way to fix the fan issue yet? I'm on latest bios, fan is pretty noisy even at idle and ramps up during any slight load.

    Have you tried speedfan?
I'm considering buying a 4330 for my wife. Would be good to know if speedfan works.

I've tried speedfan and hwinfo on my 4430s and have had no luck taming the fan. I too would really like to know if there is a solution available.

Well if you haven`t checked already... When I updated my Bios, option "Fan always on when on AC" was checked and that was a bit annoying for me because fan was spinning even when idle...So I unchecked it and got my silence back...
Anyway, it wasn`t spinning when it was on battery (as described in checked option) ;)...
    Hope this helped...
    cheers :)

Yeah, it didn't do anything for me either. It's always running whether on AC or battery.

sorry it didn`t help... :( for me it worked and I am satisfied with it now... :)
I couldn`t notice, have you monitored your temp levels?
you might be facing a overheating issue?

Arminator, does your fan turn completely off or does it just run quietly?
My fan is always running and my these are my temps:
    CPU (i3): 36°C.
    Memory: 30°C
    Motherboard: 40°C
    (HP-4430s)

    try reading this thread.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/8030189-post145.html

and go to the page that shows you how to enable the advanced processor settings. when you enable them, you will have more choices in the power management settings.

afterwards, go into your plan settings and click advanced settings. scroll down to process power management -> system cooling policy -> set it to passive.

then your cpu will be decreased before the fan turns up.

if not, leave your computer on power saver plan or upgrade the thermal paste.

Hey guys. I have the Probook 4530s: Intel i5, 500 GB HDD, 4GB RAM upgraded to 8. I was looking into upgrading to a SSD and for the past few days I did some research into certain brands and sizes. I feel like I need above 80GB but I don't have a lot of money to spend. My budget is $150. During my research I cam across this SSD Newegg.ca - SanDisk Ultra SDSSDH-120G-G25 2.5" 120GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
It seems like the best bang for the buck. I have read the reviews of it on amazon and newegg and most of it seems good. No one hasn't seem to tested it yet but I was wondering if any of you had come across this SSD? Any others you would recommend?
Another question would be, what do I need to do in order to install an SSD into my probook? I will do a fresh install on the SSD and I have an external HDD so backing up isnt an issue. I haven't done the latest BIOS update after reading the bad experiences. Will I need to update? What other things do I need to do for the SSD to work perfectly? Thanks for your help :)

Thats a Sata2 Drive and it will work perfect, and it fits within your budget I would say go for it, I had a Mushkin Sata2 120Gb SSD in my 4530s (i7) unit and it ran great, I recently jumped up to the Sata3 256Gb drive, but that was more than double your budget.

Ryangoan, I appreciate you trying to help with this issue,
I followed the thread, I don't see the option to set "ahci link management - adaptive milliseconds" but have set the processor power management system cooling policy to passive. It hasn't made any difference. My fan remains running at its lowest speed, but never seems to stop. I don't think it's a legitimate heat issue as my temperatures seem quite low. Does your fan in your 4330s completely stop while idle?

    Thanks ZeroHunter
I am further researching into different SSDs. So would I need to update my BIOS in order to get the SSD working on it?
