Second this too. I bought mine from Newegg and it had the atheros card in it. Turns out that this card doesn't support WPA2 encryption, and now I can't connect to my school's main wifi (they have a secondary one using WEP, but it's a lot slower plus you need to renew the connection every hour). Thank you.

You might have a defective card because I can connect to all kinds of WPA2 access points. Try clearing all your wireless networks and wlan settings and trying again. I know some WPA2 AP's can have some hoops to jump through before getting them to work.

I'm about to try to update the driver. If that still doesn't fix the problem, then I guess I'll have to send it in for a replacement.

Edit: well, after I looked into device manager to check the driver's version, apparently device manager reported that there was a problem with bluetooth. I disabled it since I don't plan to use it anyway, and somehow it can connect to the WPA connection lol. Thanks for your suggestion btw.

I have the 4430s model. (ci3 2330m) the idle temp according to speedfan is 44-45C.Is the fan supposed to run at these temperatures coz its on all the time. I was under the impressions the fans kick in at about 60c+ temp. Else what is the solution. (is there any bios fix)?

    Hi,
is there way to get the replacement key for HP 4330s? Or must I change keyboard?
My "X" key today went out.
And how to remove two plastic pieces, which are holding the key?

There is a setting in the BIOS to disable the fan from constantly running while on AC power. Those temps seem a little high for idle though, especially for an i3. My i5 only runs around 40c idle. Are you using the "high performance" power setting by chance?

I'm sorry, I know this is the wrong section for this, but, there are more Probook owners here than anywhere, so Sorry :D
Anyways, so here's what I wanna do.
I have an HP Probook 4730s. It came with the AMD Radeon HD 6490M (7470M) with 512MB Dedicated memory. Intel Core i5 2430M and 4 GB of ram with the other things (Wifi, Bluetooth etc) oh yes, it has a 640 GB Hard Drive.
Now, this laptop is great. However, it was bought by my father, and he didn't ask me about the size. It's 17.3 inch 1600x900. Now the thing is, I don't need such a big screen, but, a bigger screen can't possibly be wrong, right? The main problem is, I use this laptop for gaming more than anything else. The 512 MB of GDDR5 memory is fast, but low on capacity for me. 512 MB just isn't enough. Is there anyone with a 4530s which has an AMD Radeon HD 6490M 1GB and wants to trade it?
This is the preferable configuration for me.
    HP Probook 4530s
AMD Radeon HD 6490M 1 GB (required)
    Intel core i5 2450M @ 2.5 GHz (required)
    4GB of Ram
    Hard Drive @ 640GB
    and the usual things.
If you wanna trade, then please post here first then I'll PM you. Or post here then PM me.
    Thanks! :D
P.S - Laptop must be in very good condition, mine is in EXCELLENT condition because I use it as a desktop replacement.
P.P.S - This laptop is best for people who watch movies because of the larger screen size.
EDIT: I almost forgot, these are very important for some, I assume? Anyways here they are:
Large Keyboard with numpad. Almost Brand New, because I used an externel keyboard. Spacious touch pad with gesture support. Fingerprint reader and 720p HD Webcam.

    Hi all,

    I've a 4530S ( 8 GB RAM ) with ATI 7470M ( 512 MB RAM ). Can I increase GPU RAM to 1 GB ?
I can not find the GPU RAM menu on BIOS.
    It's possible to hack?

    Thanks a lot.

Can anyone confirm if the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 mini pci-e wireless card will work with the 4430s to replace the Atheros one? I am certain that it will fit physically, just didn't know if the HP board will reject it for some odd reason. I can get it for only $20 here at work through our parts distribution but wanted to ask if someone has tried any of the Intel wireless cards first.

Yes it does. I have the Intel 6230 card in my 4430s model as well as one in my wife's 4530s. No trouble - no white-listing needed.

My machine had the Atheros in it when I bought it and my wife's had the Realtek in it. Both Intel cards were purchased on eBay.

Make sure you ask the seller before purchasing if the ones being sold are engineering samples. You do not want those if you are going to use any kind of Linux due to down rev'd firmware. Either way, just make sure you get genuine parts and save yourself some trouble.

Honestly I haven't had any trouble with my Atheros card in the 4 months of owning my probook, maybe a dropped connection every once in a while, But the Intel card is rock solid and it's relatively cheap. I've seen it for $18 or so on eBay but retail is only like $20-25. I want to snag up one of the new Microsoft Bluetooth mice. Then I'll judge how well the Atheros card handles WiFi and BT simultaneously.

I've had my ProBook for about a year now, and have had no issues with the Atheros card, which is why I asked. Even if the Intel card is $18, unless it really offers an improvement, it's still money wasted.

    I found one annoying issue:
When I put my notebook in sleep mode (FN + F1), it takes quite long time to sleep (about 5-10 seconds). In this time notebook is saving something to the hdd. It's annoying because if I want put it to the bag, driveguard stops the disk and notebook stays turned on for a long time. On my previous laptop it was "poof" and done.
I have hybrid sleep mode disabled.
    Anyone has same issue?

I have win8 on my 4430s as we speak. Running great so far. I also swapped out the Atheros WiFi card for an Intel Centrino 6230 which is also working great. I needed an abgn card for work and the atheros card was bgn only.

I want to buy a 4530s. According to Notebookcheck.net, 4530s has LCD manufactured by Chi Mei (~200 contrast) and Samsung (~400 contrast), I want to get the one with the higher contrast display, how do you tell if it uses Samsung?

I'm not sure if they've been updated for Windows 8, nor have I tried them on my install. However, all the hardware works just fine on Windows 8 - I've been using it for quite some time.

Right, I've been frustrated that there's no Win 8 touchpad driver out yet so we are missing the edge-gestures. I went to John Lewis today and all of the Win 8 latops have full gesture support, so I figured I would just find an HP laptop with average specs and download it's latest touchpad driver to test on my 4530s. It's worked!!!

I used the Pavilion G6 drivers and now I have the edge gestures. However there is one thing which is wrong. The LED on the top left corner of the touchpad is now lit when the touchpad is active and off when the touchpad is off. This is the opposite way round to how it usually is. I'll try some other drivers, but in the meatime, if anyone knows how to reverse that in a setting somewhere I'd be grateful if you can share.

    Cheers,

    DC

Update: Illumination is in the settings, I've turned it off. Sorted. It only comes on when the laptop 1st boots now and when on the lockscreen, which I can live with. Happy now.

Has anyone figured out the fingerprint reader with windows 8 yet? My 4430s won't see it as a biometric device so I can't set it up for swipe logins. My device manager looks good (no missing drivers) but there must need to be an updated driver for windows 8 to see it properly.

I have Probook 4530s and I'm looking for working driver for my AMD Radeon 7470M for Windows 8 64bits.
Because of the switchable graphics I'm now stuck with the Intel's graphic card.

I have the same notebook also with 8GB of DDR3 1RX ram / #1 HDD C: = 120 GB Kingston SSHD is my boot drive, #2 HDD G: 320 GB Seagate 7200 rpm HDD is where my optical drive was with a HDD Caddy. I am having the same issue your having now that I've installed the OEM hard drive in the secondary bay. Whenever I leave the laptop alone or forget about it I have it set to shut off after ten minutes. When it shuts off it just goes to a black screen and you have to power it down and restart it to get Windows 7 Pro to come back up. Every time I have to do this I get the "Windows suddenly shut down" screen, the one where it asks if you want to boot I safe mode or "Start Windows normally" mode. Mine doesn't do what yours does when yours does, but it has the same problem as yours when it gets put to sleep with the secondary HDD SATA port being used by a HDD instead of the DVDRW drive. Maybe this info can help you pinpoint the problem? Maybe you know what the problem is with mine and could shoot me a pointer? LOL Any help would be cool! Thanks!

When I purchased 4530s and a hdd caddy, I placed SSD drive into that caddy, which worked as a primary drive. This is when problems started to happen. When laptop gets to sleep, I cannot wake it up anymore. Once I replaced HDD with the SSD (HDD in external drive bay and SSD inside laptop), I do not have wake up issues anymore. Confirmed by many laptop owners - if you place your boot HDD/SSD into your external HDD caddy and plug it in instead of your DVD drive, you will most likely run into problems.

Anyone else getting shorter battery life with Windows 8? I even disabled Switchable Graphics and installed the latest official Intel Windows 8 driver, but battery life is still about 3 hours with minimal brightness and everything (wifi, bt) turned off - it's about 4-5 with windows 7! I'm also reading higher power consumption using HP Power Assistant.

Any ideas? It's a shame, Windows 8 is way more comfortable and faster for me :(

Also, we can install the official Synaptics drivers, and with a bit of hacking, we can get some cool features :)

Hi guys, just want to confirm something from for those 4430s users who also use the ATI Home 2012 or 2013 backup imaging software:

I have the WDC my passport usb 3.0 portable HDD and I plugged it in the USB 3 port of the 4430s. I booted using the acronis bootable CD created from the acronis software on the PC. Once booted into the live acronis os; it cannot detect my external HDD. It will only detect my ext hdd if attached to any of the usb 2 ports.

In windows it can detect my ext hdd connected to the usb3 port and uses usb3 speeds. Even in the bios it detects the ext hdd plugged in the usb3 port... but even the latest ATI home 2013 boot cd cannot see the drive when attached to the usb3 port.

On another PC with an intel board and also third party usb3 ports it is working fine...

just want to know if I'm not alone with this problem. Bummer that I can't run backups using the usb3 speed.

I seem to have an issue with the FingerPrint scanner since the most recent fingerprint scanner update installed a couple days ago. My palm appears to be activating the scanner, and I receive beeps indicating an error in the scan. I don't have any active input windows. I resorted to covering the scanner with a Post-It. Anyone else experiencing problems? Thanks.

I have one in my 4430s that is working perfectly now.

I bought a caddy off ebay that seemed well built and supposedly supported HP. All metal construction and full SATA-2 speed (haven't tried SATA-3 SSD in caddy). Worked fine, but had issues with shutdown and sleep 75% of the time when the caddy was inserted. The screen and hard drives would power down, but the fan and power light remained on. You would have to force a shutdown by holding the power button for 5 seconds. Of course, this wasn't good for sleep mode because of the improper shut down.

Did some research and found the solution elsewhere on this site. Evidently HP changed how the caddy works on some laptops, so a modification to the caddy may be necessary if your caddy doesn't work properly. There is a pin on the Upgrade Bay connector that required being connected to ground for some models, but not others. Supposedly there are caddies out there that address this issue by having a switch. I took my caddy apart and removed the solder connecting the ground to that pin and now it works 100% perfect. So, if you get a caddy modified specifically for this series laptop, or find one with a switch, or modify it yourself, then it should work fine. I think I also read earlier in this thread that people had issues when they tried to put a SSD drive in the upgrade bay and tried to boot from that drive. Once they moved the SSD internally and put the extra drive in the upgrade bay they were alright.

The thread regarding the pin issue is titled 'HP Elitebook 8560p Won't Shutdown'.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/655065-hp-elitebook-8560p-wont-shutdown.html

    Hope this helps.

4330s owner here trying to update bios b4 I install win 8.
so I DLed latest bios and created bootable usb. but the usb is not bootable.

so i tried the second method from win 7 x64 and it said that after restart it would update the bios but nothing happened.
although I did notice that in my current bios f.09 I have a new option 'update bios' but nothing happens when checking it then save changes and exit bios.

    what else to do?

I had this problem with 4530s. I tried in safe mode and got message "SYSTEM DOES NOT CONTAIN the NECESSARY WMI SUPPORT for this VERSION of HPQflash".

I contacted HP support and their dumb advice was to reset the CMOS battery but it involved taking the laptop apart as it's not easy accessible.

Did you do a clean install of your current Windows os? If so try install 'HP BIOS Update UEFI' from the support website (it's under Utility - Tools for 4530s). I don' think it's on the HP drivers CD. This solved my problem.

    Otherwise, check this link -

SOLVED - BIOS UPDATE "SYSTEM DOES NOT CONTAIN the NECESSARY ... - HP Support Forum - 974329

    and that might help.

A friend has had a 4530s i7-2670 8Gb for nearly a year. She has these problems:

    1. Connection to Wireless excellent, often 144Mbps to ISP which is good down this way.The bars on the connection graph though usually show only 1 or 2, flicking between the two.
    2. When in Chrome or IE will often/almost_continuously freeze and have to start another session on the browser. Extremely annoying, say when in gmail in the main inbox and a mail pops in, 9 times out of 10 the tab updates with the # of new unread emails (1 times in 10 it does do this), but the mail doesn't pop into the main inbox. Press refresh and it doesn't refresh. Have to start a new session on another tab. This happens all over browser windows.
    3. Wireless mouse/keyboard will not reliably work, whatever the USB used. Have tried 3 different sets.
    4. When plug in the external 24" monitor to the VGA port, this will, about 50-70% of the time cause the internet just to drop.
    5. Whenever moving around the system, the cursor spends about 50% of the time with the little circling arrow running.

    Other information;
    a. no bloatware removed,
    b. has about 30 processes running (can't confirm this, from memory).
    c. Has had the bios redone on the wireless card, no change.

To me the problem is hardware, probably the motherboard, maybe just the wireless card? but why the problems with the USB and VGA connections? It could be that too much is being swallowed by the bloatware, but my wife's very similar machine, with even more processes and 1/2 the memory has no such issues.

    Any thoughts?

    Puzzled in Auckland.

    Hello all.

I own Probook 4530s and be very happy.
But I was wondering if someone can provide me an F.0A.rom BIOS image.

I want to revert from F.20 back to F.0A using this guide but don't have the rom.

Someone who haven't updated to F.20 or after and is kind enough to provide me that rom.

    thanks I appreciate any help

Worked it out... we downloaded the HP Download Manager, then did a complete update of everything. On reboot the problem was gone. I suspect it was the graphics card driver update, because when looking closely at the gmail screen, the cursor changed from an arrow to a pointing hand at non-logical places. Anyway, sorted, including the problem with plugging in the monitor (another vote for the graphics card update).

I recently flashed it and now my RAM shows up as 597Mhz in CPU-Z. What gives!? That's not even 1333! On top of this, my 4430s has been acting really crazy lately. I have a top of the line Samsung SSD and it takes over a minute to boot most of the time. It used to be 25 seconds. I have also seen some hard locks within Windows 8. I have replaced RAM and SSD, If something were wrong I hope that it would still be under warranty.

Hello, sorry if this is not related to your guys computers, but how do you guys like the reliability of your machines? Have there been many problems arising? Have you been able to use these machines for a long time without major problems? Do you think it would be able to last about 5 years?

I was interested in buying an HP probook, specifically the 4540s C8J06PA model:

    ProBook 4540s C8J06PA :: COMPUZONE - 15

And was interested in the reliability of these machines.

    Thank you.

I would recomand this model , it has all needed especially the 2gb graphics chipset ... I would definitely upgrade to an ssd drive for sure !!! All said and who owns a probook will always buy a probook when in need of a new machine.
