Here is an Owner's Lounge for those of us that keep (or kept ;) ) an eye on the new ProBook 6X60b series. Are there already any owner? Yesterday I ordered mine with the following configuration:

    Probook 6460b
    Intel Core i5-2520M
    14.0 inch HD+ Display, anti-glare (1600x900)
    4 GB RAM, 500 GB
    Intel HD 3000
    UMTS

Says it will be shipped around May 5th ... so I'll have to be patient for about one more week :)

I'll make a complete review of the notebook including display a few days after arrival. Since other feedback in this board helped me on my long journey to final decision, I hope that I can give something back.

This may sound horribly tacky- but may I ask how much you paid? One thing holding me back from seriously considering this machine is the lack of pre-configured models with HD+, the CTO models seem to be priced high enough (even after discounts) for me to opt for an elitebook instead.

Here in germany, we have no lack of preconfigured hd+ machines. I will pay 999€ (around 1479$) vor this preconfigured laptop, which is indeed a bit pricey in relation to the elitebooks. For me it was the lack of elitebook with hd+ and without ATI graphiccard, which lead me to this decision.

My desired specifications vor my new notebook were:
    - min. Intel Core i5-2520M (keyword: AES and VT-D support)
    - 4-8 GB RAM
    - 13-14 inch anti-glare display
    - Resolution greater than 1366*768
    - Windows 7 Professional
    - Weight 1,5-2,3kg (3.3 lbs - 5.1 lbs)
    - No separate graphiccard or at least manually switchable like in Sony VAIO SD series

So, with these facts in mind, there were only 3 preconfigured hp notebooks available:
    1) HP ProBook 6460b, Core i5-2520M 2.50GHz, 4096MB, 500GB, WXGA++, Windows 7 Professional (LG644EA) - 949€ (~1404$)
    2) HP ProBook 6460b, Core i5-2520M 2.50GHz, 4096MB, 500GB, UMTS, WXGA++, Windows 7 Professional (LG645EA) - 999€ (~1479$)
    3) HP EliteBook 8460p, Core i5-2520M 2.50GHz, 4096MB, 320GB, WXGA++ (LQ168AW) - 1249€ (~1848$)

The systems are very similar from a technical point of view. The differences are:
    1) 12 month pick up and return guarantee,
    2) 12 month pick up and return guarantee, UMTS
    3) 36 month on-site service, USB3.0, (probably overall better build quality)

So I had to make my decision between these 3 notebooks. Number 1) left the race quite early. 50€ for integrated UMTS card is quite a fair price, I think ... so I had two machines left. Now I had to gauge, if 24 month guarantee, USB3.0 and no UMTS are worth paying 250€ (~370$) more ... for me it is not. Since I have the possibility to buy a "HP 3 year pick up and return eCare package" for 139,90€ (~207$) within 180 days after notebook purchase, I'm reconsidering this option after "first contact" with the new notebook :) The whole package (Probook + eCare Option) will then cost ~1140€ (~1678$), still 110€ (~162$) cheaper than Elitebook without UMTS. I think it's just a matter of priority (money, value, specs ...) ... one other thing that made the decision towards probook: it does not look as much like a MBP clone as the elitebook. I like the "darker touch" very much :)

if that is the LG645EA#ABD you might have to wait a bit longer - I get an ETA 14.05. at the distributors when checked today.

Good for you, if they are really available

    Just checked with the distris:

    Also ETA 14.05.
    Actebis ETA 31.05.
    Tech Data no ETA

Apparently Ingram has 2 in stock – actually I doubt that, but you might be lucky

Thanks so much for the information! Your spec needs are very similar to mine- except that i do not really "need" discrete graphics- just thinking of futureproofing.

Also, I absolutely agree with you about the darker color!! The 6460b and 8460w are beating out the 8460p for me for that reason...... :)

i love the lighter color of the elitebook P series :)
most of the office comptuers are dark gray so it's a nice contrast

I got a shipping information, so hopefully it will be here tomorrow or at least saturday.

    You are welcome!

Hm, that's something I can't comprehend ... most of the "office laptops" have a black or silver plastic surface without any metallic application. That's another appeal for me: the anthracite metallic look of the probook in combination with the retro minimalistic style makes my heart leap for joy :) Very nice and elegant ... but as said before: it's just a matter of personal taste and priority. And to state it proper before any misconception will rise: I didn't say, that design of the elitebook is crappy or anything else ... I think it's also very nice, but it didn't gripped me like the probook did ;)

yes agreed appeal is very subjective. Also most of the notebooks in my office are gunmetal/gray or black. (older Dell D830's and Lenovo's). Also as for the metallic comment the new elitebooks have a minmal amount of plastic and that is where they differ from the probooks in build. It's all metal. I do agree both colors look very nice and the W sereis with the gunmetal looks pretty sleak. But one thing I dont like about the w series is the gigantic hinge on the 15 and 17 inch models.

I also prefer the dark case, like the new b-series and w-series, don't care much for the p-series color.

Thanks for the pic. I have been considering purchasing this laptop for sometime now.

How is the size of the 6360b? Does it look and feel big and heavy? Which spec did you order?

My distributor has the current specs: Misco

    HP ProBook 6360b Notebook PC / Intel® Core™ i5-2410M (2.30 GHz) / 4 GB RAM / 320 GB HDD / Integrated: Intel® HD Graphics 3000 / 13.3" diagonal 16:9 LED-backlit HD+ / DVD+/-RW SuperMulti DL LightScribe / Gigabit Ethernet ~ WiFi b/g/N ~ Bluetooth / Genuine Windows® 7 Professional 64-bit

The processor is reasonable, but what do you think? Should I wait and order from HP or buy from my distributor?

Good idea ... I changed the topic towards it.

My notebook arrived yesterday and turned into frustration because of a heavy transport damage which even avoids opening the lid  So I can't test nor see the whole notebook ... I'm very disappointed and have to wait till Monday to contact customer support. I'm curious how fast it will be exchanged since there aren't any other machines of this type on stock ... we will see :(

I have the same setup. I carry it to work every day and it fits nicely into my backpack, but it's not a Macbook air :p. It's a bit thick an a little heavy but it's not something you really notice, since it's still only a 13". The build qulity and the metal finish feels very sturdy and far better than any of the regular HP's. Battery time is great, and not to much bloatware. A lot of Hp's own security stuff, but I'll guess that's a bonus to those who need encryption etc. The screen is ok, but not a wow factor. The CPU is fast enough for my needs, I have a 3.8Ghz i5-750 in my main rig, so it's not as fast as this.
Overall I'm very happy with it and the price/value seems to be spot on.

Thanks GreatDane! Looks like I am ordering this tomorrow! Was worried about the thickness of the laptop but it does not look that bad. The specs match up well with a Macbook Pro and it is better value for money then a Macbook Pro.

Bottom is plastic, but it feels very sturdy. Good thing is that it's one large back plate for easy access to the interior. The areas around the keyboard are all metal, but plastic around the screen.

    Hi there,

    Yesterday I got my new 6460b (LG645EA#ABD, 900€)
    and a Samsung SSD (128GB, 470 series, 200€).
And maybe you're interested in my first impressions:

    - it' not very slim, the weight is okay
    - it has a very fine keyboard, and the diplay looks great (for me)
    - cool, no crews to access the hd od memoy slot
    - the hd exchange was a joy
    - at the first try I couldn't access the bios setting
    - every entry at the initial menu ended at some system information !?
    - I wasn't shure if I should install a dual-boot or a virtualisation system
    - therefore I started with a test install of Windows7 (from cd)
    - very annoying: beside the Win updates, there are about 20 updates on the hp site ... urgl
    - next I tried some linux installations
(I wanted to move from Ubuntu to some rolling distri like Mint LMDE, Sabayon ...)
    - I ended up with following setup
    - Ubuntu 11.04, one btfs volume (no compression = bug), no swap
    - VirtualBox with Windows7-64Bit on a growing image
(only the Windows updates - this is my solution)
    - BUT you have activate the cpu virtualisation at the bios
    - every thing worked fine (except of course the fingerprint reader an gps)
    - if you work with it, it's silent (except the cd) and it only get warm
(it was a good choice to get a notebook with no additional graphic card)
    - hdparm show me impressive 255 MB/sec read
(maybe I should have ordered a faster ssd, but I thougth it was SATA-II)
    - I miss the volume wheel of my old laptop
    - it's very handy, the akku reached for nearly 4 hours (installing, rebooting ...)
    - I didn't get the draft n working (130MBit with my FritzBox)

And next week I got the additional 4GB RAM (about 30€) and
a hard disk box (eSATA, 15€). Then I have fast 500GB backup device, too.
And I'm happy to choose better equipped one without ssd and did the upgrade by myself.
After all I'm very pleased, I paid under 1200€ and got my perfect notebook.

    Ciao, T.

This week I got my new 6460b (LG645EA). So far I'm quiet happy with the notebook.

The only thing that's really annoying to me is the fan control. I set the fan in the BIOS and in Windows 7 energy options to passive cooling. But the fan only remains a few minutes after I turn the notebook on silent. After that it's spinning at a medium loudness and it's never turning off.

Did anybody experience the same behaviour or does anybody know how to get the fan more silent?

I have the same problem with my new 6560b.
Fan is constantly running at a relatively high speed. Would expect it to be more silent, especially when it has not much to do.
    No solution yet.

Beside that the first impression is very good. Some minor quality issues, that are ok for the price. The SSD makes it super fast.

Does anybody know if there is a difference between the 1600x900 standard screen of the 6560b and the screen advertised as "wide viewing angle" on some models such as the LG655EA ?

@Titus: Did you use 64bit or 32bit version of Ubuntu. I've just ordered my 6460b (no OS configuration). I wonder if you had any problems with this laptop + ubuntu. Is the fingerprint reader the only thing that doesn't work?

@GreatDane, how would you rate the resolution? I'm still debating between a 6360b and a 6460b. Portability is a factor for me. Resolution is also a factor as i will be coding.

Do you feel a bit cramped when using 2 documents side by side? Can someone help me in deciding between these two(6360b or 6460b)? Thanks.

The 6360b only has the lower res screen option so it would have to be the 6460b if you're coding

Bough the 6460b exactly for that reason. I need the resolution (for CAD and Photoshop) and the 6360s is just not good enough. The 6460b has a great 1600x900 screen and it's a pleasure to do some serious work on it. Size and weight differences are not that big that I would go without the much better resolution.

I can't understand about what kind of photoshop work you are talking about. I own 6460b with 1600x900 screen, it is reasonable for general office work(and yes, it is better than my stone age nx6325 screen), but at no mean for photoshop (all photoshop work is being done in dock mode). So better resolution has no advantage here, at least for me.

I just got myself a 6460b and i have to say i'm very pleased with the laptop. The keyboard is a little spongy can miss a letter because i'm a fast typist, but otherwise i'm really enjoying the experience. It's also very quiet.

I was also pleased to find that the PC came with a top of the line WD Black HDD (Which i swapped out for a 120Gb SSD)

    HP 6460b
    i5-2520m
    4Gb Ram
    HD 3000 GPU
    500Gb WD Scorpio Black HDD

It came pre installed with Windows 7 Professional and HP Protect Tools. I found HP Protect tools to be too time consuming and bloated for my use.The TPM setup was also quite more involved than what i'd been used to, to achieve the same result.

I decided to format and install Windows 7 Enterprise. I then installed the fingerprint sensor driver from the manufacturers website which also came with digital persona. I then enabled the TPM and Bitlocker. The fresh format netted me 10Gb of HDD space as well.

Since receiving the laptop i have upgraded the memory to 8Gb Corsair 1333Mhz CL9 and swapped out the HDD for a 120Gb SSD from my old laptop (Will be getting a 160Gb SSD when Intel fix their firmware issues). I will then use the 500Gb drive which came with the PC in a HDD caddy (replace the CD-Rom)i ordered from Ebay to increase my available space.

In power saving mode i can get about 5 Hours and 30 minutes battery time with Wlan on while surfing and typing documents.

Overall it's a nice well rounded machine, well worth its price here in Norway where we can't configure our own laptops.

Ok, it seems France is the iest country in the world regarding the probook specs:

Here: Ordinateur portable HP ProBook6460b spécifications - produits Espace +pme HP

We can see that both 1366 and 1600 are available for a 6460b notebook.

And once you click on the specific models, you can't find any information regarding the screen resolution...

I'm so pissed with this website. I have the money to buy a new computer, I want to buy a new computer, but because I can't find any accurate specs on this probook, I will spend all my money in wood and match and set the HP France HQ on fire...

Couple of days ago windows7 started to annoy with a message: device on usb port is not recognized... Finally BIOS kindly informed me that WWAN is not supported thus is disabled.

Anyone else with the same situation?
    -------------------------------------------

Simple re-insertion of WWAN card solved the problem. Sorry for disturbing.
