It seems to be possible that 4530s users can upgrade their screen to an 15.6 HD+ or FHD screen. Since HP shipped this model with an 900P screen everybody can take this advantage (even the cheapest models coming with simple HD).

So if your laptop comes with a 1366x768 screen all you have to do is change your screen cable with this one (provides international shipping), or part number 646273-001 from hp part-surfer costs ~67$.

However my idea about using the 4730s cable (part number 646274-001) worked with successful implementations on the tonymacx86 forum. The good think is that this cable is almost 1/3 price on the partsurfer (~19$) and 1/4 of the price on the alinc.com (15$).

So total cost will be 15$ (plus shipping) + ~(100$) for the screen minus the original's screen value(~80$).

Upgrade cost would be only ~40$!!!

I now suggest an R G BLED screen 1080p matte AUO screen part No B156HW01 V.4 only 89.99$!!! One of the best RGB monitors around, you can check anandtech review .

Also confirmed working the LP156WF1(TL)(F3) & (B2) matte screen @ 69$. Its price is great and its colors, white and angles are pretty good.

    I someone is interested for 900p screen I would recommend matte LP156WD1(TL)(B1) & (B2) .

However every led with 40-pin left connector screen would work.

Post #2 is a small guide

NOTE: This upgrade is only tested and working on 4530s. A guy from the tonymacx86 forum tested it on 4430s and it is NOT working so far.

I have no intention to advertise any of the sellers I gave links above. However they seem to be trustworthy and very helpful to technical issues.

Little guide for those worrying for too small letters!!!

    How to?

-Purchase one of the following cables.
646273-001 or 646274-001. 273 is the "official" upgrade cable for the 4530s while 274 is the cable used on the HD+ 4730s. According to liposuction's picture they are identical on looks while huge difference in price (~50$).

-Purchase one screen of your liking HD+ (1600x900) or FHD (1920x1080).
I suggest the LG LP156WF1(TL)(F3) (70$ +shipping) for its greatness. It is also the one tested from all users here. However any led screen with 40pin left connector would do. (laptopscreens.com have some starting from 50$ prior to shipping).

    -Unscrew initial bottom cover

-Unscrew every screw you can see (including those under the rubber covers.

-Remove you dvd and the screws that it is hiding.

-Carefully remove your keyboard. The first time needs much force since it has also some adhesive tape.

    -Disconnect every connector you see.

-Unscrew every screw you can see.

    -Remove carefully your upcover.

-Carefully remove the last screw left to remove your motherboard.

    -Now disconnect the display cable.

-Wait for the above parts to come home.

-If everything is home, follow the youtube video on screen changing for the 4530s.

    -Put everything back in position.

    -Power up your machine. And!!!

    hope it helps

    Bravo timohour!
I think my username will be in your table soon. What keeps me back is that my 4530s is brand new and I dont want to be brutal so early.
It would also be helpful if you could do a video tutorial of how to change the screen cable.
By the way there is another video out there HP 4530s ProBook 4530s Laptop Screen Replacement Procedure - YouTube which demonstrates screen replacement with removing the hindge covers

Not yet. Sorry to bring that to you but don't have time to deal with Internet connection due to exams. After 16/2 I promise to upload.

No need to upgrade cable if you already have a 900p screen. We use a cable because the 768p isn't compatible with 900p or 1080p.
All you have to do is purchase a 1080p screen and follow the YouTube video.

Don't know if this work for 4520s or not. Sorry I don't have one to test right now. But if there was an original option from HP (900p or 1080p) it will work with the proper cable.

If the screen is a 40pin-left connector LED, it is combatible. If it uses an right connector you can use a left to right adapter.
If the screen is an CFL it can't be done.

I am concerned of everything being too small. I have worked at 1680x1050 and got me some days to get used to, so 1080p will be worse for me

When using a 1680x1050 I assume you did it on 15.4" screen which is smaller than a 15.6. So it would be almost the same (as 1680x1050). Also if you use windows you can raise dpi. On my 4530s I work @ 125% dpi and everything is cool. Also on most browsers there is setting default zoom or lowest font size
To make you understand I have to set word 2007 @ 120% preview to have an oroginal A4 on my screen. Compare this setting with your ideal screen and take your final decision.
Take also into consideration that 1080p movies you will see every single pixel :)

Still haven't received answer. As soon as I get it I will inform.

Does raising dpi also increase the size of buttons and menus in ms office and other software?

    I just did the math:
    1600/900 at 15.6------>46.33px/cm
    1680/1050 at 15.4----->50.65px/cm
    1920/1080 at 15.6----->55.59px/cm

As far as pixel density is concerned 1680/1050 stands almost in the middle.
Anyway I'm now having second thougths..

Well, answer from laptopscreen came back. If you insist on 900p matte screen they would recommend this.
If you change your mind they have an AUO screen RGBLED 1080p matte screen right now in stock model number B156HW01 V.4 priced @ 99$. If you are interested in 1080p I think that it worths the extra bucks. Check here

If you want to stick with 1080p but go for a more moderate LG as the one stated on the first post I could send you mine and grub the RGB for myself ;).

First post updated with small letter GUIDE!!!

Did they say that the B156HW01 V.4 was compatible as well? I know they say the backlighting should be the same...Any other documentation/reviews on how this screen is better?

    Re: 8460P Cable
As we offer only the one single screen for this computer (1600 x 900, Matte),
I don't think there will be a need for cable,
    however what's the point?
Is your buddy's screen broke? Because we'll send out an exact same panel he already has.

I'm not the most comfortable with tinkering around laptop internals, so I ordered the B156HW01 V.4 with the cable mentioned in the first post and dropped it off at my local repair shop. I have the 2310M version of the ProBook, so I grabbed an i7 2630QM and asked the shop to put that in as well.

Just got it back today and that LCD is beautiful, the colors are more vibrant than any TN panel I've seen. The CPU upgrade works perfectly as well, definitely worth the $160 upgrade, especially since the i3 can be sold for around $70-80.

Thanks for this thread and information, I finally have the perfect laptop!

Really happy it worked out for you too. Since manufacturers don't built laptops exactly as we like them, we have to do that on our own. That's the main reason I upgraded to 1080p and i7.

Hi, everyone and timohour may I say that this is a - one awesome thread!

It's been half a year now since I bought my 4530s and honestly it's been all around a real treat to use(after a horrifying experience with a Pavilion dv2000 that in the end I just through off a cliff). And I know it's a sin to complain, but if I had to be absolutely nitpicking about it: I'd have to say that the screen most definitely is its weak spot(that of course being the 768p HD one). Now, from the user manual I already guessed that I probably could go through with a DIY upgrade to 900p. Although, I'm certain I wouldn't ever had bothered doing that just because it wouldn't really make that much of a difference, I think(+no guarantee it would work).

However, last Thursday I came across this thread & by today already got myself a 646274-001. And now, of course, I'm browsing around for a good 1080p display. You suggested AUO B156HW01 V.4 as the best one out there at the moment, is that still the case? Also could there be any compatibility issues going from LG to a AUO display(are screws the same)? I understand that ZipXavier had his 4530s upgraded to it, does it work alright, would you suggest to others as well?
I myself do a lot of video production & editing so I'd really like to experience all the detail of a 1080p capture the fullest.

    That's all for now,
    Cheers.

AUO B156HW01 V.4 IS still the best one and will be the best for a non-IPS screen for a good while. I doubt anything better will be made in the TN panel sector.
Going from LG to AUO is a non-issue, provided that you do have a FHD cable.

Yeah as LSB says, off course it will work provided you will use a FHD cable. As stated on the first post every 15.6'' LED 40pin-left connector screen will work. Happy to help in any other issue

Yeah, another thing I was wondering about, could this upgrade void warranty?
I mean if something else, like HDD or motherboard goes wrong, could service people then reply it's my fault for making such uncertified upgrades. Should I save my old display for all 3year warranty time or can I resell it to someone?

    timohour,
thanks so much for this thread. it's much easier to follow than the one on the tonymacx86 forum.

i just purchased the *274 cable (alinc charges shipping now, btw) and the RGBLED v.4 screen ($10 cheaper now!). hopefully the installation goes smoothly.

one thing i was curious about on the other forum was all the talk about DSDT. is that only relevant to those who have OS X installed? do i need to worry about that if i'm just using windows 7?

    thanks again!

Yeah you guessed right. DSDT is only for OSX. Since you are using Windows 7 it is just a Plug N Play solution. As soon as you boot with your new screen everything will perfect.

Thanks for the update on the prices, I will revise my first post.

    Waiting for your results!!!

    @pulfiction

I used the old screen to replace my sisters' broken one, so in case of warranty issues I will install my old one on my laptop. I don't think that if motherboard or hdd or odd goes bad your service department will claim that your upgrade caused the problem. At least no sane person would say that. You can also check with them to be 100% sure.

    Waiting for your results too!!!

I absolutely recommend the AUO B156HW01 V.4. It is hard to believe that it is a TN panel, the colors are extremely vibrant and accurate. It is not a wide gamut display, so you won't have to worry about color correction with your editing. 1080p videos look incredible. At $89.99 it's $10 less than I paid and that's a steal.

Anandtech's review is what had turned me onto this display, but I never dreamed I'd be able to use it on any Probook sized laptop until this thread.

I've had this laptop since August 2011 and it has been great except for the original screen. Following the instructions from this site, the HP video on removing the keyboard and the top cover, it was easy to remove the screen bezel and hinges to change this screen.

I purchased the AUO B156HW01 V.4 screen from laptopscreen.com and the cable from alinc. This has been the best upgrade I've made on any of my computers. This screen is brilliant and clear.

If you've felt that your HP Probook 4530s was a good purchase but the screen left something to be desired, I know you'll be extremely happy if you change out your screen to this one.

I feel like I cheated HP, buying this computer for 599, installed the new screen for about 100 and thinking they could've sold this thing for 800-900 with this screen.

Thank you Timohour for this great thread.

PLS do not hijack this thread...

Choose any 12.7 mm SATA bluray. Remove the bottom cover and the DVD screw, and replace the bluray with the original DVD. If you have further question refer to the 4430s/4530s Owners lounge section.

PLS KEEP THIS THREAD ONLY ON SCREEN UPGRADES ON THE 4530s!

    Thanks!

I was about to order the screen when I found out I needed that cable from Alinc aswell (got 1366x768 screen). $53 for the cable, $44 for shipping and $30 for tax = $130 for the cable only. I have an old Asus G72GX laptop with broken CPU on it and 1600x900 display, can I use cable from that? Was also wondering if it was a cheaper place to get the cable to europe? Thanks.

Scout for a local dealer. I found one in my country giving it for ~20€...
Does you G72GX have a 15.6 LED screen? If yes it will work.

You probably could do the same as I did:
Go into your local HP homepage, in Norway it's HP - Norge | Datamaskiner, bærbare PC-er, servere, skrivere med mer I guess, look up their support contact number, ring them and say you want to buy a spare part for your 4730s, then they'll give you contacts of HP certified dealers in Norway, e-mail them with the part number that you want and get the best deal.
This way I found 3 local dealers and got the part in 3days costing ~20€+VAT.

    Latest update:
Ordered my AUO B156HW01 V4 today from a EU seller on ebay that cost me 90$ + 15$ shipping.
Adding all up screen + cable = 140$ upgrade (not a bad deal considering I live in Latvia, a place no one's ever heard of). lol
The panel should arrive sometime next week, then I'll make sure to post my end results. Probably will leave my old screen lying around for now just in case something goes wrong.
By now, thanks to all you guys who've been a great of help.

So I wanted to report back.. I installed the AUO screen using the cheaper cable from Alinc. Everything worked perfectly. It looks great, although the text is pretty small. I know I can magnify it but I don't like it magnified since I'm using a dual-monitor setup and then the text is too big on my 24". My model # is LJ518UT.

To be honest, it was an interesting experiment, but I probably wouldn't bother if I had to do it again. I accidentally popped off a keyboard key because I had to pry it from the top, the hinges are slightly bent now, and the bezel around the screen isn't quite as flush as it used to be on the bottom corners. Also, there's a high-pitched whine coming from the CPU area (which may or may not have existed before, and may or may not just be the normal processing noise). Also need to be careful of stripping screws, even w/ the proper tools.

All in all, the results were as advertised. It's just a bit of a pain-staking (and sometimes stressful) process. Whether the results are worth it or not depends on each person.

    Thanks for all the tips!

Great to hear your success... I am adding your impl. on the first post.
If your are gentle enough pls report your personal opinion if the upgrade worth it or not. Also say a word about the difference in colours btw the LG and the AUO screen.

Regarding your huge letters I finally went down to ~112% DPI on Windows, since I was running a dual screen setup with an 23'' monitor.
When I was using it in OS X I was using the so called HiDPI 1080p resolution for the internal screen making everything almost the same. I hope that such a solution would also be available on W8 or it will be possible to set Different DPI on each screen.

Hi timohour, great thread, just came across this!

I live in Greece, Athens and I am very interested to upgrade screen of my hp 4530s - can you share if the best way is still to go through laptopscreen.com +alinc.com or both panel and connector can be obtained via Greek HP dealer at reasonable cost?

    many thanks!

OK, I as well finally got some results to report:
Although I ordered the B156HW01 V4 as you recommended the screen they sent me is LG LP156WF1(TL)(B1) which at first was a bit disappointing. I mean these ebay resellers can sometimes be such f* rip-off artists! Nevertheless, it is simply not cost-efficient for me to return it, so I at least decided to give it a try.
All the how-to tutorials provided were a lot of help as I managed to disassemble and the reassemble the entire machine without ruining any of the body work.

Anyway, having 1080p now on this laptop is simply awesome. Even though I didn't get the AUO this LG is 10x better than the stock Samsung my ProBook came with in all aspects: brightness, contrast, colour, viewing angles, you name it.

Done with the first impressions after using this new setup for a week I've noticed a few glitches. It seems my integrated microphones aren't working properly any more, but I'll probably sort that out myself.
However, another thing is that this new screen doesn't light off automatically when I close the lid. But I think the stock does so. What the situation with you guys in this matter? Am I the only one with this problem, have I connected something wrong?

P.S. The screen does of course turn off after a time out period, just not instantly after closing the lid. Sleep/Shutdown/Hibernate when closing the lid isn't working as well. I used 646274-001 cable same as everyone else here.

Hi, this might be a little off-topic but I also have a dual monitor setup and with the big screen I'd like to have a better video card to use the 1920X1080 resolution fully in gaming. Is it possible to install newer video card chips on the 6490m place or is it stuck there forever. I saw some videos about installing video cards on laptops but I'm not really assured that it works. I see that you use an external solution is it working better like this.

Technically it might be possible to BGA solder off the 6490M and put a pin compatible chip in it's place. Still you'd be looking at a small % improvement in performance at a high cost that would void your warranty.

The better bang-per-buck option is a Fermi-class eGPU via expresscard slot. There you'd see two or more times faster preformance from a cost effective solution. See http://forum.notebookreview.com/e-gpu-external-graphics-discussion/418851-diy-egpu-experiences.html for details. A complete GTX460-768MB eGPU can be had for as little as US$200.

    Hi all

did the conversion yesterday. went with AUO v4 screen- impressive colors and definitely improved angles- transforms the experience. One needs to be aware of high resolution and need for DPI of 125% (at least) though, as mentioned here.

all process took 4h. need to be careful when doing this if you want still mint laptop afterwards :)

    Videos:
I found official HP replace videos extremely useful:

    Customer Self-Repair Steps (videos/animations)
see: "Top cover removal" to see how to access screen cable.

many thanks to all for contributions here this was fantastic!
