I just got an openbox 4530S from Microcenter for $360 three days ago. Yesterday I came across this thread and decided to do the upgrade. I'm getting the AUO B156HW01 V.4 screen. I have a friend that has the matte version in his Lenovo W series and my girlfriend has the glossy version in her XPS 15, so I know the awesomeness I'm about to experience.

Since my model came with the 1366x768 display, I also purchased the Alinc display cable. I expect that everything will get here by Friday, so I'll post an update on my progress then.

I also decided to get a second ram module and a Crucial m4 128gb SSD, so when I'm all done if I can manage to sell the old screen and the 500 gigabyte hard drive the entire rig shouldn't cost me more than $500! :)

Or, you know... I'll have a brand new broken laptop! Wish me luck!

I got the Alinc cable today so I took out the old screen and cable and put in the new cable.

My experience so far has been pretty good. Here are a few things that might help others in the future. Note that I followed the instructions in the Probook 4530 service guide. My comments pertain to the procedures described therein.

    1. When taking the keyboard out, you should push from the bottom with a screw driver. I wasn't sure how far I could safely push, but in my experience I was able to push far enough to get my fingertips underneath the keyboard from the top. Be careful when doing this that you get under the entire keyboard and not just the thin exterior covering or you may bend it. To give you an idea the entire keyboard is about 4mm thick.

    2. I was unable to push the top cover off with a screw driver from the gaps in the battery compartment as the service guide suggested. I think to do so would require that the opposing force be applied down through the screen. I wasn't comfortable doing that, so I managed to separate one corner and just peeled the top off from that corner. The front was a little tricky since you have to get the top cover over the USB ports to get it to come off. Finally the front was especially difficult to get off. I found that pushing in (in the direction of the screen) on the bottom of the front helped to get the top to release.

To the poster that said his laptop no longer turns off the screen when it is closed, there is a small metallic piece that fits somewhat loosely in the plastic bezel that goes around the screen. I'm guessing that this fell out without your noticing. I think if you can find it and replace it, your laptop will again turn off the screen when closed.

Tomorrow I'm getting the screen. I really hope that everything just works because troubleshooting this would be a real pain.

Any advice on how to put the screen bezel back on? Right now I have the top cover installed and I'm having a hard time fitting the black hinges covers on the bezel over the silver hinge covers themselves.

All done! The screen works and is every bit as beautiful as I hoped. The only evidence that the entire laptop was taken apart is a tiny scratch on one of the screen hinges. Overall I think things went very well!

I was unable to get the screen bezel on over the hinge covers. To get the bezel on, I had to remove the entire display assembly, take the hinge covers off, put the screen bezel on then put the hinge covers on. There may be a way of putting the bezel back on without taking the hinge covers off, but I couldn't figure it out.

Barring advice from others, I strongly suggest that you remove the entire display assembly to work on it.

    Hi,
My screen is broken and i need to change it. I have a 4530s(LH297EA) laptop and I want to know if I want to upgrade from 1366*768 to any other resoution do I need to change the lcd cable? because you only talk about 1080p and not about 1680*768. I am afraid to change the lcd cable since there is no video.

Can someone please put back on youtube the video about How to replace your screen's cable video: HD+ screen cable replacement HP Probook 4530s - YouTube.

this is the information i got from hp:"The part number is 646311-001 and the product description is SPS-LCD PNL RAW 15.6 HD AG LED SVA LVDS" can you tell me where i can buy a screen compatible with my laptop.
    Thanks for your help.
ps: Sorry for my english I am french.

    Hi Nivisan,

Sorry to hear that your screen broke.

I'm not sure what you mean about upgrading to a 1680x768 screen. I don't believe that is a standard resolution, but I could be wrong. If you wanted to upgrade the the 900P or 1080P screens, you would need to replace the LCD cable.

Earlier on this page, timhour recommends a 900P screen as well as a 1080P screen. I can personally tell you that the AUO B156HW01 V.4 screen is compatible with the 4530S (if you upgrade the cable) since I'm using it right now.

As far as replacing the cable is concerned, in my experience it was not a difficult task by any means. The following link is for a service guide. Look for replacing the display assembly in that document for instructions on the entire process.

    http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c03054480/c03054480.pdf

Take a picture of how the cable is routed before you take the old one out, and make sure you route the new cable the same way. If you do that, you won't have any problems.

It may seem like a lot of work to take the keyboard and the top cover off, and it did take quite a bit of time, but it wasn't especially difficult. Also, if I had to replace just the screen, I think I would take the keyboard and the top cover off anyway.

Taking the screen apart is easy enough without taking the top cover off, but putting it back together is very difficult and could very well result in you breaking the screen hinge covers or the front bezel if you're not careful. I'm saying all of this to tell you that you shouldn't fear replacing the cable because you'll probably have to take the entire laptop apart to replace the screen anyway, and replacing the cable isn't hard at all.

Hopefully this helps! Let me know if I wasn't clear on anything. If you have any other questions, I'll do what I can to help. Also, trust me when I say that the AUO B156HW01 V.4 screen is incredible and well worth the trouble upgrading from the original, and my screen wasn't even broken.

Is there a nice 1366x768 that works with the 4530s? It's a pain to find a genuine B156HW01 V.4, plus i have issues with the higher DPI.

Hi, just replaced my screen with the suggested B156HW01 V.4.
The screen works but the top left side is darker.
Any ideas if thats a screen problem and I should get it replaced or maybe a connector problem, or inverter?

I was looking into upgrading to a 1080p screen. Has anybody tried the cable from the 4730s?

    One other question...
Elsewhere I read that I may need to replace/upgrade the webcam cable as well. Is that actually the case?

    Hi Everyone,

Anyone ever heard of the cable 648977-001? This is what I got when I ordered 646274-001 from HP Parts. Initially, I thought about returning it, however, since I had my 4530s dissisembled I decided to test it, and guess what it works.

However, after using it (with B156HW01 V.4) I noticed that it causes a severe eye strain (its hard to focus when reading something).

Now I am not sure if its my screen, cable or just my screen needs calibrating?

    Thanks for your input

    Thanks!

Assuming my bios version is current, do I need any software/firmware patches to make this work? (I saw on a Hackintosh forum that it they needed a dual-link patch to make it work, but I was unclear if that was only to make it work with Mac OS)

Your assumption is correct. Dual ink patch is for Mac.
My laptop came with Bios F.23 and I had no issues (plug&play basically).

I remember reading that certain 4530s models don't work with the screen upgrade. I really want this notebook because of the ability to run Mac OS, but the screen is subpar. So if I can upgrade it to 1920x1800 1080p, that would be good.

    So back to the question,
Is there any model that doesn't work? Or can I just go on eBay and buy the first one I see?

    Okay, i can confirm that this upgrade works with 4530s (A1D13EA) + B156HW01 V.4 + 648977-001 (ordered as 646274-001).
And one question: is anyone of you experiencing some high frequency noise when dimming panel?

Good news for the 4520s owners - my 4520s (i3) received a B156HW01 V.4 lcd yeasterday together with a display cable from 4720s (pn 606166-001). I guess that any cable from 4720s/4520s should work as long as the plug that goes to the motherboard has only one pin missing.

Guys B156HW02 V.1 - this panel worked. This panel is currently in production and the best matte led screen available. The viewing angles are better than my IPS screen on my phone(HTC Sensation) and better than B156HW01 V5. It costs cheaper too cause it is in production atm. I got mine for $60 from ebay. Alibaba has ton of em for cheaper
But the screen is rated 300nits!!!!!!!!!!!! TOOO BRIGHT lol. In the dark I have to go to intel graphics and turn down everything.

Having stumbled across this thread tonight, quite randomly as I was actually looking to find updated Windows 8 touchpad drivers, I've ended up ordering a B156HW01 V.4 and the 646274-001 cable.

If this goes well, the only thing I'll need to change to make this ProBook perfect is to get the CPU fan noise under proper control. I've already gone SSD boot disk, removed the DVD-R and replaced with the original HDD. Now with this 1080p screen on it's way, it should address the one issue that's really really bugged me since installing Windows 8, which just looks poor on the original display.

Will report back when I have the parts installed.

So, having ordered the B156HW01 V.4, what I've actually received this morning is a B156HW01 V.7

Does anyone have experience with the B156HW01 V.7? The order I placed was definitely for the V4 and from what I can tell (I've not taken the panel out of it's platic packing yet) the V7 is a glossy screen so I'd rather get the V4.

I need some help here. Does anyone know a UK source for the AUO B156HW01 v.4 or B156HW02 v.1?

Most sellers seems quite vague and the one who does have them in stock won't sell to me as I'm intending to do an upgrade rather than a straight replacement.

    Hello everyone,
So I also tried giving a shot and trying to upgrade my laptop!. I have ordered both screen and a cable replacement for HP 4530s. I've gotten a cable first so I wanted to check if it's alright.

What I noticed first was that HP product number is 648977-001 instead of that Part No 646274-001. But after some google I found out it's OK. Shortly - I have disassembled, assembled everything, connected cables, my computer booted but no 1600x900 resolution!!!!!! Might it be true that they gave me a wrong cable? The highest resolution I could pick was the same 1366x768 :(

As for the previous poster's question where could you purchase a screen - here it is
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUO-15-6-...Laptop_Screens_LCD_Panels&hash=item1c1d56bf11

I have ordered from them without problems. Waiting for the item to come.

Hi hallerx1. I purposely avoided anyone advertising one with the words 'or equivalent' in the title as that means that they can just substiture it for a compatible 1080p 15.6" screen.

I ended up getting one, but the seller really didn't want to sell to me when they knew I was upgrading a laptop. Anyway, the screen arrived on Monday and the cable came direct from HP this morning so I'll be turning my laptop into a pile of parts later tonight :D

Oh that was something I was not aware of... I did leave a message next to my purchase that I want a Matte screen. But I have just remembered there are more matte screens with 60% gamut. I hope I get that V4 one and not another type of screen. That's what you risk if you are paying (much) less than the other sellers.

Oh well... I still have some time until my probook comes back from service. After I replaced a cable to the one compatible to HD+ resolutions, power cord did not charge the battery anymore, just white-orange LED blinking. And later it wouldn't boot at all. I placed original cable back and it booted, but battery wont recharge :( So I'm waiting until I receive screen and a laptop and I will post some news here.

Also when disassembling the unit (especially the top cover) make sure you have all screws out before you pull out. I almost damaged the cover, because there was still 1 screw left somewhat hidden and unnoticed. So yes, it's better to double check before you attempt.

Well, here is an update on screen upgrade.

I have successfully installed LG LP156WF1(TL)(B2) screen although I ordered AUO screen. Nevertheless it's a noticeable improvement over previous screen - brightness, colors, viewing angles. It's quite a strange first impression browsing the web 1920x1080 on 15 inch screen, but it's obviously better. I still have a feeling that I would need to calibrate the screen for better results, but for now I will settle for what I have. Overall, it was a worthy upgrade

I'm uncertain if 4530s and 4540s cables are compatible to each other. If someone disassembled the laptop and took a picture of how the cable pins look like, we could compare them to what we have on 4530s display's cable. Only this way, because as much as I've been searching, I couldn't find any 4740s or 4540s cables in HP PartSurfer on sale at the moment and 646274-001 is not officially supported on 45(7)40s models by HP.

Edit: If you checked available HP parts of 4540s/4740s here, you could not even see a cable listed as well as noted on the notebook as a spare part. However 4530s/4730s provides such opportunity

I bought and fitted the AUO B156HW01 V.4 1080 panel and the 646274-001 HD Cable but I only seem to be able to set 1200*900 resolution. Drivers are up to date. Any ideas?

    Hi guys

I`m curious about that 4540s too. Have you found some new information about that ? It is possible to buy 4540s for a real good money so it is a great opportunity to have a nice laptop with great screen.

A also have some other question. I see that if some laptop have HD+ option, it is possible to use FullHD screen. So considering that almost every 17,3" laptop on the market has HD+ 1600x900 screen, we can assume that we can use FullHD in every 17,3" HD+ laptop ? Does it mean that HD+ cable is exactly the same like FullHD cables ?

    Thanks for the answer

    EDIT:

If you try to search "4540s screen replacement" in google, you can find some informations that it uses 40pin cable. Does it mean that FullHD should work fine ? For example - http://www.amazon.com/HP-ProBook-4540s-Laptop-Screen/dp/B00A82HPWQ or https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/hp-compaq/PROBOOK~4540s/

Ehh, it looks like it doesn`t work... - http://www.tonymacx86.com/hp-probook/88212-4540s-lcd-screen.html

And something new here - http://www.tonymacx86.com/hp-probook/55473-hp-probook-4540s-68.html

To Moderator - Sorry, I didn`t know that it has to be accepted by you and I sent it few times :p

Does you hp 4540s screen backlight go "out" with the new cable (4740s cable)?
I bought the same cable and am currently using it with a 68p screen but at times the backlight goes out and I can't view anything.
How did you route the cable? As you would realise the cable is longer.
    Thank you

What is state about probook 6560b or 6570b?
I know it exists with both hd and hd+ screen. Do they both use 40pin cable or different?
If yes, i think 1080p screen can work.
    Any help

    Hi guys!
Sorry to revive an old thread, but I need help.
I have a 4520s, and just received a replacement for my broken screen (1366x768). I purchased a new screen from laptopscreens.com. The new screen is 900p. The problem is - after installing the screen, most of the resolutions not displayed correctly in Win7 Professional. Sometimes there is a green/blue/red cast instead of black.(even in the bios). The 900p and 768p has no color cast, but the display is not readable, everything seems distorted.
Any suggestions? Is it because I did not upgrade the cable as well?

    Thanks guys!:hi2:

okay not sure what i have going on i tryed upgrading my 4530s to the 1920 by 1080 lg LP156WF1(TL)(B2) and the first cable sent to me was incorrect so i sent it back the new cable came today and i cannot verify if its correct or not as thier is no model number on it i ordered the 646273-001 model as when i tested with the original incorrect cable the picture comes up on the new screen and i can select 1920x1080 but the lcd has horizontal red lines not solid lines more like static whats going on also can anyone tell me the pin count diffrence between the hd+ cable and the non hd+ cable as i think thats probably the only way to tell them apart without the model number on the cable itself

Just a note to say that this guy is right. Yeah, I joined the forum just to let other folks know the HP Probook 4520s does work with the Au Optronics B156HW01 1080p screen. I got a used V.4 version from Ebay and bought the cable new from HP. Note that the product number of the cable I used is 602999-001, per HP's support site. The product number Randomnick gave is for the 17.3 1600 x 900 display itself, not the cable. I got the cable with the webcam plug included. If you're not a big webcam person, or would be OK with an external webcam, you might want to get the one without it (606973-001), because the webcam cable is too long for the 15.6" 4520s, and kinda bunches up behind the screen. Anyway, it works like a charm and the image quality is, as others have noted, drastically improved. With this screen, an SSD, and 8G ram, you've got yourself a pretty slick machine.

    Hope this helps somebody.

Hey anyone know for sure if it's the same process for the B156HW02 V.1 You all know now the vendors will send you "compatible" screens now. I ordered the 646273-001 for $12 from itpartsource.com I think their site said they had like 4 to sell. The 646274 also mentioned was at alinc for about $22 anywhere else it was more.

Any idea what the problem is? Or have run into this? Should I get the 646274 cable instead?

Wow anyone who read this and orders screens and cables be careful. A lot of these companies are rip offs. I'm seeing a lot have illegal return/exchange policies.

Update: With this screen 646273-001 did not work properly. I ordered the 646274-001 for about $45 total from sparepartswarehouse.com which worked fine. I only ordered the 1st one cause it was mentioned that it should work also but didn't in this case for laptop model: HP Probook 4530s A7K07UT

This will be a good update for this forum. The screen doesn't look bad actually. Seems to have a good viewing angle. Lol the 1080p resolution is so small on it but still a cool thing. A lil tweets is all that's needed. My client can figure that out on their own. He did want a better screen on it for his wife. I'll let her complain to him if she has an issue with it. From what I can see not sure how she would have an issue. Better than that garbage screen it originally came with. (Samsung isn't garbage but you know. ..resolution wise)

I don't see how it being an IPS screen would make any difference as long as it has the same 40 pin left sided connection. The trick is really in what cable to use that will work. The AU Optronics seems to be the way to go when trying to upgrade the screen on this model laptop and I read AUO has made an IPS 144hz screen.
