    Hey all,

Does anyone know when the new hp elitebook 8560w will be available? Google and a search on notebookreview doesn't give any new info.

    Thanks Jan

Because nVidia is still preferred for workstation solutions... not really sure how you figure nVidia is crap either.

It would be nice if we would have a choice. Firepro or quadro (dream on: quadro 1-2-3000 or 6870 based firepro : dream off).

If AMD releases a FirePro equivalent, I have no doubts that HP and other companies will add it to their GPU selection list when it is available (after all, the 8540w/8740w did).

While I don't think nVidia is "crap", actually they make the most full featured workstation cards, I wouln't buy an nVidia product because I just don't trust them. Many other tech professionals I've worked with share this feeling. And ATI's workstation cards have caught up in leaps and bounds lately, as well as their newer hardware designs tend to be more innovative. nVidia has given us the impression that they are more interested in what their marketing people want instead of following their engineers' advice. Case in point was the "bump" problem of a few years ago. The engineers said the design would be very fast, but would break down prematurely due to the thermals. Marketing, I assume, heard the word "fast" and pushed to use it anyway. And then the cards started to fail, many right after the warranty expired. And nVidia kept quiet for the longest time. Until, that is, they were forced to address it. And it cost them. Money, yes, lots of it. But more important, reputation. I'm retired from corporate life and no longer oversee $400 million a year in technology spending. But even in my small operation, I choose my vendors carefully, and history is part of that choice. Hopefully, nVidia may make it back to my list of choices some day.

By the way, love your avatar.

Wii, may be you can also ask your reliable source what have happened with the full HD (1920*1080) display option for 8560 p? When the sales just started in the middle of march it was available for some time, but then quickly disappeared. Now this option is only available for mobile workstation. Looks like some marketing decision, because apart from this option i really don't see much difference between p and w.

    nice!

So right now i have to choose either the current 8540w (i7-740qm, 8gb, dreamcolor 8-bits+FRC) or a similar priced 8560w (dreamcolor 10-bits).

    Which should i go for?

    Thanks Jan

Maybe i should re-phrase my question:

Would the 8560w be a significant update (in your opinion / expectations) to the allready good 8540w or would it be 'just' an update to current available hardware? Or in other words will the 8560w be worth the wait?

I am trying to justify the wait for the 8560w over buying an 8540w for myself, but i didn't come to any conclusions yet. Maybe your ideas about this could tip the scale in one way or the other.

    Thanks Jan

It will have a totally new desing, upgrade CPU/GPU.

The rest should be about the same.

I think it worth the wait.

The thing is there is always better around the corner, so if you can wait a few months then wait. But when you need a laptop, buy whichever is best out then and forget what's in the future.

The thing is that sometimes the corner is a bit further away and the need is very urgent so buying the product is right, but when it is the other way around waiting makes sense, don't you think? ;)

Not every new processor is "new generation", so "half a year" is not true. You can look here for details:

Where did you hear THAT? The latest news are that Ivy Bridge will be availabe 12 months after Sandy Bridge. This would also fit into Intel's Tick-Tock strategy. Although Ivy Bridge will probably fit into the current 6-series chips mainboards the new 7-series chips will support USB 3 natively and the respective mainboards will probably be available at the end of Q4 2011.

I think it will be far more interesting to see how AMDs Llano will perform. It is their first 32-nm CPU (or APU as they call it) and has already been delivered to the respective brands. If it performs well (like i7 Sandy Bridges), it will put pressure on Intel's pricing strategy. Thus it might be wise to wait for Q2/Q3 2011 when prices might drop significantly.

If i understand correctly than the Sandy Bridge is a evolution of the Westmere processors? Or is it a new generation?

So the Sandy Brigde is totally new and new ivy bridge wil be a shrunken smaller version of the Sandy bridge?

Anyway an ETA (and price indication) on the 8560w would be great but still out of the question i guess.

    Thanks Jan

Just to keep everything straight, Intel's current prospective roadmap as I understand it is:

2011 - 32 nm Sandy Bridge (new arch)
2012 - 22 nm Ivy Bridge (shrink of SB)
    2013 - 22 nm Haswell (new arch)
2014 - 16 nm Rockwell (shrink of HW) - may be 14nm built from the first 450mm substrates and called Broadwell.
2015 - 16 nm Sky Lake (new arch)
    2016 - 11 nm Skymont (shrink)

Although new toys are always interesting to me, I can see having all my processing needs covered for about 2 more years with my current crop of 8540w, 8740w and 6550b. So I'm waiting for the design and features of the new Haswell machines.

The years quoted in my post are the main production years. Yes, Ivy Bridge more then likely will be introduced in 4Q 2011, but in any case, will not be included in HP mobile workstations until Spring of 2012.

In terms of CPU performance, that's not going to happen IMO.
The CPU cores in Llano are related to the cores in Phenom I and II, and those are quite inefficient compared to SB.
For the same reason, AMD have dropped this design for high end desktop and will use the new Bulldozer design instead.
Llano will be replaced next year with a new design which is based on Bulldozer, but by that time Intel is one step ahead again with 22 nm, and AMD will still be stuck at 32 nm.

AMD's only chance to compete with Intel is this year, with high end Bulldozer desktop and server CPU's.

One big reason why Llano doesn't have the new Bulldozer design is that it would be too risky for AMD to use this new design on all new CPU's.
That's why we'll see Llano (with integrated PCIe, graphics, new socket, but old cores), and Zambezi with new cores combined with the mostly old AM3+ socket and chipsets.
AMD will replace everything old next year, so these upcoming CPU's are transition models in many aspects.
Expect a much faster successor for Llano, and a socket replacement for AM3+ next year.
