justinkw1 and everyone that contributes here, I cannot thank you enough for all your work!

Just as a heads up, the link for Intel's latest chipset version 9.1.2.1007 is not working this evening. It may be that the server is down or perhaps Intel rolled back the driver?

It looks so strange that HP had just moved Envy 15, either for the products or drivers download, from its web site, recently - I guess that would be occurred within these days, end of Sept 2010 till Oct 1st 2010.

What does happen on Envy 15?

My old laptop 8510w, is still available for drivers download and HP does have lots of updating on it.

How do you do that when it's an .exe file from intel? It does not work for me with -overall.... just running the .exe does go through the full install process on my 540M but when complete there are no changes in any of my driver versions and it does not ask for a reboot like past updates.

EDIT: I forgot to rename the file, got it to run with -overall, this actually showed it loading a few specific drivers and asked for a reboot. Oddly I can find no new drivers in device manager, they are all still showing as v. 9.1.1.1022 dated 10/28/09.

Has anyone with an i5 CPU seen a change in any of the CPU drivers with this new intel chipset update ???

    • Updated Intel Chipset Device Software to version 9.1.2.1008 (thanks Z3tor).

The drivers for each component updated by the Intel Chipset Device Software have different version numbers depending on your configuration, and may not be updated because you already have the most recent version. The version 9.1.2.1008 is the package version number. Intel packages the most recent drivers available, but they will be less than or equal to version number 9.1.2.1008 depending on whether or not Intel fixes something for that component's driver.

Hope that made a little sense...

How do you install the rapid storage technology driver linked in the first page here? It's a zip with drivers, there is no setup or .exe, and not sure what it is I need to find in device manager to update the driver.

    @Bigcat400

IIRC you just unzip the file and run the Setup.exe which starts a normal install manager process.

I think I ran just unzipped it to a folder on my desktop and ran it from there...

So, I've got some wifi problems on the Envy 15 after using Revo Uninstaller to remove some HP bloatware. I removed HP Wireless Assistant, which I thought at first might have been the case, but I reinstalled it and still no wifi. Strange thing is, there are times that the wifi does work, but I think upon restart it ceases to work. I've installed the Atheros LAN drivers but still no avail. The ones for the Intel wifi I was planning to install but it says don't if I have Atheros. Anyone else encounter this problem?

I thought all US envy 15's came with the intel 6200AGN wifi card. I know that's what I have. Check device manager to see which one you have...

The atheros item you see in device manager should be the LAN driver is for the ethernet cable connection not your wifi card.

    Quick question:

I just upgraded my hard drive from the original 320gb 7200 rpm drive to a samsung 640gb 5400rpm. I created an image of the original and the restored my new hd from it (love this feature).

My question is related to the HP 3D drive protection program. The notes state not to use it if you have a non HP supplied hard drive, so I uninstalled it.

Is it really unwise to install the software? It seems like it'd be something useful to have.

    Thanks

Actually, version 9.6.4.1002 of the Intel Rapid Storage Technology does have a setup executable (it's just not named or placed where you would typically find it). Once the zip file is extracted, go to the utils folder. Just run iata_cd.exe and it should do the trick.

If the Device Manager or system did not complain, I think it would have been fine if you had left the sensor driver and software installed. However, I don't think the sensor would be useful for anything much though.

Is it to be assumed that non HP supplied drivers wouldn't have the appropriate sensors for the software to work? When I first installed windows without using the image, I installed the 3D drive guard. While I was downloading the ATI driver I flipped the notebook over to look at something, the computer automatically went to sleep. So, it does seem to be working even with non-HP drives. But I just want to know if someone used it with a non-HP supplied hard drive and then had it suddenly break the drive.

Update: 3D Drive guard should work fine on non HP provided hard drives. See this post by an HP employee:

    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Operating-systems-and-software/Envy-17-and-HP-3D-Driveguard/td-p/307892

I quoted the person to make it easier.

I installed it, and 3D drive guard shows that my hard drive is supported. From what I understand all this software does it stop the drive arm from writing when the accelerometer determines that the laptop is being dropped. This has nothing to do with the hard drive beyond the fact that it needs to have movable parts (i.e. SSD drives don't need to worry about similar damage from being dropped as mechanical drives since they lack moving parts). Since the accelerometer is in the laptop itself and not the hard drive, it should be fine to install. I'm not sure why anyone was worried about this.

@Arctic Fox: Thanks for your detective work. I will update the driver threads so that third-party HDDs will no longer be a concern. As for SSDs, I could put in that it isn't necessary to install the sensor driver.

    EDIT:

Does anyone else run Hyper-V on their Envy 15? I have been running with the F.18 BIOS because the F.28 would blue-screen with Hyper-V running. Lately my system has been shutting down due to temperature warnings and it seems 2A is fairly stable. Just wondering if anyone else has been running 2A with Hyper-V before I update.

Really though? that's the only addition to the bios? Street Fighter IV controller isn't detected? Does it make it more stable at all? Worth an update?

You can use the default driver shipped by HP, delete a registry key to get to set the tap zones.

I bought a new Laptop and had the same problem trying to set a tap zone for a right click.

I came across this blog post via a google search that solved the issue for me.

Ant Experience: Enabling Tap Zones in Synaptics ClickPad for HP dm4

Credit to the blog owner for this find.

The solution in a nutshell is to do the following: Open regedit.exe and navigate to ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Synaptics \ SynTPCpl \ Controls \ 7Tapping \ Tap Zones’, delete the key ‘Visibility’, and reboot. That’s it.

This will make the Tap Zones visible again for the default driver.

So applied BIOS F.2B and my laptop is bricked. BIOS detected a cooling fan issue (902). I don't know if the BIOS applied improperly or if it's actually detecting an issue that was present but undetected previously. Seeing as I was having heat related shutdowns the latter is possible. Oh well. At least it's still under warranty. .

    All,
I'm from HP repair service in Gdansk, Poland.
Yesterday we got a request to flash new BIOS version to HP Envy 15-1150es laptop and here is what we found.

HP ships BIOS update program that is not suitable for "Platform Build ID" 1522. So PLEASE CHECK FIRST YOUR PLATFORM BUILD ID IN BIOS! NEVER FLASH 2.x BIOS IF YOU ARE ON 1522 platform.

We got several repair requests about died HP ENVY's after BIOS flashing. We can't do anything about it --it's necessary to unsolder BIOS chip from mobo first, than flash default BIOS, than solder it back. Soldering is way to risky -- there is a good chance to kill chip from overheating. But yesterday we were requested to flash BIOS ourselves, so we had a chance to save one laptop from permanent death and find out the reason of killed laptops we faced preciously.

The shipped BIOS flash program has the following characteristics:
    1. It detects 1522 platform as eligible for flashing
    2. It has no ROM image for 1522 platform (!)

So, BIOS update program will erase your existing BIOS (it's eligible for flashing) and then fails (because there is no new ROM image supplied). Net result -- your laptop has now no BIOS at all!!! After next reboot you will end up with aluminium-magnesium brick that previously was HP Envy!

We downloaded all the BIOS updates possible. The latest that works was F1.B. All F2.xxx versions are broken.

So please check twice before flashing new BIOS. NEVER FLASH ON 1522!

P.S. To verify my words, plz rename downloaded file to *.z and open it with WinRar (actually download is self-extracting archive). Than extract nested executable with WinRar again (rename to *.z again). Now take a look what ROM's are included actually and what are listed in INI file)

Ummm... I have a 1522 Platform Build and F. 2A Flashing worked on mine. The ones that failed on me before was actually F. 24. Also, isn't almost ALL Envy 15-1100's are on 1522? If so, why is your company so sloppy on your BIOS Revisions?

I'm pretty sure the 1522 is the original, first-generation Envy. You should only be affected if you have a Radeon 4830. That's the easiest way to tell them apart.

No, this one was pretty new (warranty starts end of Mar 2010).
The full config is HP Envy 15", i7 720QM, 5830
Still, Platform ID as reported by BIOS is 1522.

Mine is also 1522 with i7/5830 and all bioses F2x worked for me. F2B also.
Only F24 bricked my brand new Envy (from F18) and it was replaced by another.
So with the new one, I upgraded first to F1B and then F26 and so on ...

So mine was a cooling fan issue. Got it back with OS intact in a week. Couldn't ask for more... well other than having FedEx Direct Signature Required so I had to go pick it up but other than that I was very pleased with my support experience this time.

BTW, F.2B is loaded and working fine. Hopefully Hyper-V doesn't bluescreen on this one but that's a test for tomorrow me thinks.

    Hello guys,

I found some great information browsing this thread, but I'm still stuck.

I have a ENVY 15 1030ef 1rst Generation, i7 720, HD4830, 4Gb RAM, and I have been looking for working video drivers for ages now.

I couldn't stand the HP crap that was on the preinstalled windows, so I made a clean install of Windows 7 32bits. I also flashed the bios to F2A. I tried installing the drivers listed at the first page (8.712), tried the latest ones from amd, I also tried the 8.702, and all gave me the same result : it freezes on windows loading screen (and sometimes goes BSOD after a while).

I did not install any other drivers (intel things, and so on) though.

I hear most of the people saying that HP drivers work, but I also tried installing the ones from HP website (which are the 8.712 I think) and it did not fix the bug.

I am just looking for some working drivers since I could'nt find any so far, I don't care how recent they are, or from which brand.

    Can you help me ?

    redpoo,

give a try for drivers directly downloaded from AMD (Notebooks, Mobility Radeon 48XX series)

though, I would install first Intel Chipset Drivers.

Thank you for your answer, I already tried the latest ones from amd, not working either.

I'm going to install the chipset drivers and see if anything changes.

To the 4830 owners : if you managed to get the video drivers working, can you tell me your exact configuration please (OS, driver version...) ?

i cannot confirm it works on either gen of envy15, but HP has updated the ATI drivers for the envy14 & envy17

i didn't include the link for the envy14 because hp packages the ati & intel drivers together

Driver: AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver HP ENVY 17t-1100 CTO Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

    Documentation: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp49001-49500/sp49450.html

it might be worth checking out, esp for 4830 owners as HP drivers have been the only ones reported to work
