[Drivers] HP ENVY 15-3XXX / ENVY 17-3XXX (INTEL)

FWIW, and YMMV, but those Radeon drivers are garbage. They suffer from the brightness controls bug that has plagued so many with Intel Windows 8 drivers. I was able to get brightness control (its system wide, not just FN keys) by installing the Intel driver a second time manually, but it stops working again the next reboot. Leshcat uses the same Intel driver in his unsigned 12.8 Catalyst package, and it works fine. So its clearly an inf issue, which translates to a registry issue. I just don't know which key and what value.

This was a clean install. I am kind of peeved that HP didn't properly test them.

    HP Envy 15 3033CL

    Edit:

I believe I have it resolved now.

This has only been tested on the HP Evny-15 3033CL, and is only meant for the HP Envy-15 3000 series!

Use at your own risk, and considered warned that this has only been tried on my machine!

Those who find their brightness maxed 100% without the ability to change after installing Windows 8 and the HP Windows 8 AMD SG drivers, please see here:

    Fix:
    https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=EE83EB3BE6087DFE!4928&authkey=!ANOLNHTDPbEg1qc

    Default:
    https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=EE83EB3BE6087DFE!4927&authkey=!AIckLWYuoGw-9NA

There is a reghack to fix it, and one to put it back to defaults (for the HP Envy 15 3000 series anyway). Reinstalling the drivers will also reinstate the default values.

I think I am missing something. I tried your reg file and it does not seem to work on my Envy 15-3200. Please advise.

    Yes, this part:

This has only been tested on the HP Evny-15 3033CL, and is only meant for the HP Envy-15 3000 series!

    ;)

You have an Envy-15 3200 series.

That said, you can make it work, or if you get me the value, I will add a .reg file for it.

Follow the directions here under the FAQ:
The Ramblings of Adrynalyne: Fix Brightness Control for Windows 8 AMD SG Drivers (HP Provided)

Summary: Install Windows 7 and working drivers. Open regedit and find the value I need, and post it here. Or fix it manually yourself in Windows 8.

envy 17-3270nr here.. Upgraded to Win 8 last night, but today I went back to Win7 until the brightness can be fixed performed a clean install of win 7 this time). That being said, I still had some issues with the drivers to get me proper brightness control with the on screen display.. I ended up with both the AMD 7850 and Intel 4000 drivers having the 3/26/12 date

    Hey guys,

First of all I am so glad to find a thread like this, because it helped me a lot updating the drivers for Windows 8! I, however, being an idiot.. I accidentally deleted the administrator account (using net user account /delete).. And I had to "refresh" windows 8.. And by doing this everything got deleted.. (Even the stuff in windows.old disappeared.. :( )

So I would like to ask for anyone who has an HP Envy 15-3000 or anything similar to PLEASE upload their recovery folder usually found in C:\Program Files? That would be great!!

    Thanks in advance,

    Hi adrynalyne,
I very much appreciate your efforts on getting a work around over this issue. :)
However the fix doesn't seem to work for me. I am still having Brightness issue and it's stuck at MAX.

    My Notebook Details:
    HP ENVY 15-3017tx Notebook PC

    2.2 GHz Intel Core i7-2670QM
    8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM
Radeon HD 7690M + Intel HD 3000 Graphics (Integrated SG)
    BIOS: InsydeH2O Version 03.61.01F.09

Also, the 2 finger right click isn't working. This problem has been there since Windows 7 Professional x64. Other multi touch gestures are working as expected. Any work around for this?

    Thanks!

Yeah, there might still be hope. The two finger click was reversed for the latest Synaptics package, thats why I thought mine was broken too.

Can you verify some information for me?

Does this key exist in your registry?
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet00X\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0001

What is the value of the Dword FeatureTestControl?

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Select\Current

What is the Dword value of Current?

    Hi
The key structure HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet00X\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0001 exists, but there is no FeatureTestControl. Alphabetically, it has FeatureScore and Force_CV_Detection_DEF. No FeatureTestControl.

The Dword value of Current in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Select\Current is 0x00000001 [Name: Current, Type: REG_DWORD]

    Yes I installed sp58815 driver.
Yes again, your registry file did create that value and set the Dword value to 0x0000f940. But it didn't fix my brightness issue.
Sorry for misunderstanding, but the reply I gave above was after the default installation of the driver without any registry tweak :D

Nonetheless, my Brightness is at MAX is quite inconvenient :(

Weird, because its basically the same machine as mine other than mine being a US model.

Here is what I would try (WARNING: at your own risk when it comes to registry editing).

Search through the registry for the rest of the FeatureTestControl entries and change them to f940. There is probably only one more to change
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\intelkmd

    Reboot.

If that doesn't work, you might need to go back to Windows 7, and see if your FeatureTestControl registry value differs from mine. You might also be able to install the Windows 7 drivers in compatibility mode in Windows 8 to get the information as well.

MAX Brightness is annoying. I could feel my face melting when using the laptop ;)

    Also, check here:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/633054-hp-envy-15-3xxx-series-owners-lounge-230.html

The poster said it works, but I tried my solution on a clean install of W8 with nothing installed, not even additional drivers save the display driver and my method worked. So I am relatively confident that there is nothing else installed fixing my problem.

IF you decide to do that, let me know if the value is different.

Also, it might be simpler to use Acronis and make an image of your current OS, install Windows 7, and then when done go back to your Windows 8 image. Thats what I do.

Anyway some can upload their beats software from their SWSetup folder? I only backed up my recovery and system drives. While partitioning my HD I had some type of failure and lost my C:\ drive...
I can't find it on the hp website. I managed to download ALL of my other needed drivers/software from hp, but no beats. And still downloading the AMD radeon driver. It's quite large for a Qatari 3g connection!

    Thanks Partition magic...

Ah! Finally the brightness issue got fixed :D
The registry tweak about FeatureTestControl actually worked! Only the path needed to be changed in my case, ie, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet00X\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000 instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet00X\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0001. Apparently by default the Control Set 0 was being used it seems.

While the registry key location is likely the same, the value might be different for the 3200. Does the 3200 series have Windows 8 drivers yet from HP? The reference drivers don't seem to work with this hack.

Is it AMD or Intel that we need the proper driver for the 3200 model to get brightness working properly? I'm prettty disappointed that this big of an upgrade was released and the manufacturers didn't have their ducks in a row for it. I'm back on Win 7 until this gets straightened out - I'm mobile most of the time and brightness at 100% just doesn't work when trying to stay off a wall charger.

    For SG, you need both.

For example, you can't grab a reference Intel driver and get SG or brightness control to work on the HP Envy models.

To those running HP provided SG drivers for Windows 8 and have brightness issues, please go back to Windows 7, and get the FeatureTestControl value from

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000]

    or

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0001]

I only have the value for the HP Envy-15 3000 series (not 3200 series).

Post the value and your model. Thanks!

THANK YOU! I thought I would never find a solution to this problem. I also have the 3033cl model, and I was very surprised to see someone who had the same problem and a solution to it. I cannot thank you enough; without your solution, my face would have turned red, and would have continued to melt, so thanks once again. :)

Doubt it. It's the AMD driver and the issue appears to be with the Intel HD 4000.

Thanks. If f940 is the value, then its worth a shot to try the reg hack I have for the 3000 series. I have updated it as of last night if you had tried it before and it didn't work.

Just make sure the HP provided drivers for the 3200 series are installed first.

I would have to upgrade to Win 8 again before I could test the registry update. I did try one of the regedit's but it was from an earlier post.

So the reg hack just changes the value to use the same value that was in Win7?
