I installed it on top of the old drivers. But that doesn't explain why it wouldn't have changed the values.

Sorry should have been more clear - Was Windows 8 an upgrade or new install?

Ah, I upgraded from Windows 7. Unfortunately, not knowing about this issue, I could not check the values before the upgrade.

All we need is one person with an Envy 17t-3200 to check the value(s) before they upgrade to Windows 8 and we can figure this out!

Well I'm back on Windows 7 and I have the Envy 17-3270NR - my value is f940 as well!

Then based on that I would say this registry entry has nothing to do with the fix.

Nothing do with the fix... for you. I have formatted twice, not activated, not installed anything but graphics drivers, and it WORKS. There are 2-3 others it worked for too.

What Intel driver version do the 3200 drivers use?

    These are 9.17.10.2817.

Well, yeah, that's the one I'm the most concerned about since it's the only one I have. No reason to get defensive.

    I am on 9.17.10.2867.

Yup, I'm content to wait for a fix. I've already wasted a lot of time on this. Intel is still trying to figure out the issue:

    Brightness settings are ignored.

I can confirm that on an ENVY 17-32XX (7850M/Intel 4000) on Windows 8, using the latest HP VGA Drivers (2012-10-18 , Version:8.982.6.0, 298.3M | sp58812.exe) and the same reg hack (change the dword value to f940), brightness control is working. :)

I,m not sure you can screencap brightness fixes ;)

Hve you thought about using Acronis to make an image of your OS?

You could then install Windows 8, and if it doesnt work, flash your image back.

This is the driver for the AMD 7780m so I am confused as to how that would have fixed what is clearly an issue in the Intel graphics driver. Please explain.

BTW, I'm running this same driver with the same fix on my 17-3200 and no brightness control.

Intel drivers are included with the HP SG packages. They have to be installed together to work correctly.

You know they have been installed together if it shows the provider as AMD, even for the Intel driver.

It will also show for version the package number from AMD. If you are showing Intel as provider or an Intel driver version, your drivers are not correctly installed.

I uninstalled the AMD drivers and reinstalled the latest ones and now the brightness control is working. I did have to change the entry below 0000 to f940.

Yay! I got it as well - completely removed AMD using the express uninstall.. then reinstalled using HP's latest drivers. I then went into registry and located the FeatureTestControl values and changed all to f940 and rebooted. Confirmed working.

    • Added: AMD Radeon HD graphics driver package for ENVY 15-32XX (7750M) / ENVY 17-32XX (7850M), version 8.982.6.0000 (AMD) / 9.17.10.2817 (Intel SG) for Windows 8 x64.

Sorry guys for being absent - the past few days have been very busy for me and I'm in the midst of catching up. Terrible timing, I know. :(

Thanks adrynalyne for being such a great resource on the Windows 8 display brightness issue and corresponding workaround. Your blog post is now linked in the first post of this thread under the AMD graphics drivers.

    Reg fix Confirmed!

Envy 15-3000 upgraded to windows 8 pro. installed HP's Radeon drivers for Windows 8 x64 from driver page (Version:9.0.0.0, 297.14M Available as of 10/18/12), then ran reg fix.

    Quick and easy. Thanks!

I'm sure there will be soon. What AMD GPU is in that?

Edit: Try the ones for the Envy 15 3XXX.

I found this in the inf:

    AMD6740.7 = "Radeon (TM) HD 7690M XT"

Give me your device IDs from driver properties in Device Manager, and I can look closer.

Doesn't quite match. Odd, because I checked for another 7690m XT (with 2GB) and it matched.

    Sorry for the false alarm.

Several people have had success, for both 3XXX and 32XX. There is a very good chance you have incorrectly installed video drivers.

    All posts I've seen are for the 30XX (15" & 17") and 32XX (17" only).

This ain't my first rodeo and drivers have been correctly installed using HPs, Leshcat, and those listed on the forum; each tested with the registry changes. I'm also one of the few (if not only) that has done a full clean install rather than an upgrade of Windows 8. If anyone has a 15" 32XX CTO with brightness control working please let us know.

Your first rodeo or not, you not providing me information doesn't allow me to help you. Post your driver information in a screenshot like I did please. If you think your control number is different, you might need to grab it from Windows 7, or even extracting the Windows 7 drivers. Check here for information on where it would likely be here under Update 3:

    http://adrynalyne.blogspot.com/2012/10/fix-brightness-control-for-windows-8.html

Best of luck to you :)

PS, you are definitely not the only one who did a clean install of Windows 8. I too did a completely clean install of Windows 8.

    Edit:

I checked the Windows 7 drivers, and your feature code is the same as the rest of us.

    [PwrCons_SNB_AddSwSettings]
    HKR,, FeatureTestControl,%REG_DWORD%, 0xF940

    [PwrCons_IVB_AddSwSettings]
    HKR,, FeatureTestControl,%REG_DWORD%, 0xF940

Can you post your driver information in the AMD control panel as well as Device Manager?

Open regedit and tell me what the value of FeatureTestControl is under

    Thanks.

A couple things I would like to check:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\intelkmd

There is a FeatureTestControl here as well. Can you also make sure that it is f940 and reboot?

Also, under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Select, what is Current set to?

Anyone got anything to work on Envy 17 3070nr on Windows 8??
All there drivers refuse to install, or install without brightness controls. =(

Are you installing official HP drivers?

I ask you because none are listed for your model yet. Until then the reg fix likely will not work.
