From what I've experienced, the specific issue with Rapid Storage Technology has to do with installation (especially if it needs to be reinstalled). Even if I revert to a previous version of the Intel Chipset Device Software, I am still unable to reinstall Rapid Storage Technology version 10.1.0.1008 through the interactive setup wizard.
What I'll try to do next is install using the Device Manager / Update Driver wizard method and see if this works.
-
Hope everyone had a great New Year's!
As I mentioned before, I removed the recent Intel updates as a precaution due to issues involving installation.
Also, check out the first post for yourself if you haven't done so.

Is a system restore required or can I simply uninstall it and re-install the previous driver?
Thanks! -

Thanks Justinkw1! It worked exactly as you described.
I will now wait until we get the next round of updates for RST and Intel chipset. -
New version of Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility 9.2.0.1021

Hey justinkw1,
After going through the most recent Intel Chipset Device Software (ICDS) and RST updates I have a few clarifying questions.
First, an explanation. (My apologies if this is unecessary, but I was aiming for completeness).
After I installed ICDS version 9.2.0.1021 I was again faced with the issue of RST becoming inoperable as had been the case with ICDS version 9.2.0.1016. I tried to reinstall RST as instructed by your update on the first post of this thread, but again encountered the error "An error occurred while registering one or more components. Setup will exit." as I had with the previous updates as we discussed. I decided to try your suggested alternative method of INF install, but admittedly got lost in the minutia of the READ ME and just decided to try and install it as seemed logical. I downloaded the applicable file, unzipped the contents into a folder on my desktop, went into Device Manager and under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers selected Intel(R) 5 Series 4 Port SATA ACHI Controller. I then went to the Driver tab, selected Update Driver, and simply directed the installer to the folder on my desktop with all of the unzipped components. The update completed successfully, I restarted, and upon startup RST was working again. I then decided to try and see if the standard installer would still yet give me the same error message that I had encountered earlier, and to my pleasant surprise, it did not, but went through the entire install (or more accurately, reinstall) process without a hitch.
So, pardon the long explanation, my questions are these:
Was my process of installation using the INF files done as intended? Again, although I tried to read through the READ ME I got lost in all of the details about CDs and floppy disks which just seemed unecessary. Everything seems to work fine now, so I'm guessing all is well, but I would greatly appreciate it if you could spell out the installation method in layman's terms or at least verify that I did things correctly.
Admittedly I'm a bit frustrated that this, what had previously been a no fuss update process, now has quite a few hiccups. Do you expect that Intel will get its act together and resolve these conflicting issues? I understand that the primary problem seems to be in ICDS overwriting the correct version of RST, but do you know of a reason for this occurrence when it hadn't been present in the past?
Thanks as always! -
@random15: Yup, you've done it correctly.
I didn't try using the interactive setup wizard again after I used the INF Install method though.
Just to get everyone else up to speed, new Intel updates (re-)posted. There are some important things that need to be known about these updates, mentioned below.
01/05/2011
- Updated Intel Chipset Device Software to version 9.2.0.1021 (thanks Spyrus).
- Updated Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver to version 10.1.0.1008.
01/06/2011
- Renamed "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator / Intel HD Graphics" to "Intel HD Graphics."
The Intel Chipset Device Software packages that have been recently released seem to be overwriting the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver should it be installed. I strongly advise that once Chipset Device Software finishes installing, that Intel Rapid Storage Technology be reinstalled.
However, recent versions of the Intel Rapid Storage Technology are also failing to reinstall using the interactive setup wizard, presumably due to the Intel Chipset Device Software update. If this problem is happening to you, try using the INF Install method: the ZIPs include the INF files necessary to manually update the Intel SATA/AHCI component through the Device Manager's Update Driver wizard. I have successfully updated mine using this procedure. -
There's a new package for Intel Turbo Boost Technology Driver 1.2.0.1002 available, that supports more models than the one listed on first page.

How are you guys installing the rapidstorage??? I tried unzipping it using 7zip and winrar and it's not working....help!
-
I was trying to unzip the .exe...lol. Anyway I got it to work, went ahead and ran the installer like random did...it worked here too. Only concern is the software is installed in the x86 folder..is that alright?
-
Did some checking on the intel site and the seems like the x86 thing is fine...
Man, I just realized that this is probably the first time i actually installed the intel chipset drivers as before i never did the -overall thing. This time it actually installed stuff rather than just said "installation complete" without actually doing anything..haha. -
01/08/2011
- Updated Intel HD Graphics driver to version 8.15.10.2266 (15.21.2[.64].2266) / 6.14.0.3074 (Audio) (thanks Z3tor).
I also added a sentence to the Important Information section pertaining to the INF installation of Intel RST through Device Manager. Once the driver is installed, run the Interactive Setup wizard again to get the software to work correctly. -
Do the new Intel Chipset Drivers fix the problems with the idle CPU Usage and overall lagginess?
-
-
Hmm, well it seems that these drivers also cause the high idle CPU Usage....
-
Catching up on the updates:
01/22/2011
- Updated IDT High Definition Audio Codec to version 6.10.6302.0.
- Updated IDT High Definition Audio Codec to version 6.10.6315.0.
- Updated ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5430 / 5450 / 5470 / 5650 / 6330 / 6370 driver to version 8.771.1.0 (AMD graphics) / 8.15.10.2189 (Intel SG).
- Updated Intel WiFi Link driver to version 14.0.1.2 for Windows 7.
- Added Ralink / Motorola Bluetooth + High-Speed Adapter driver version 3.0.42.285.
- Updated Ralink RT3090 WiFi Adapter driver to version 3.1.13.1.
- Updated Synaptics TouchPad driver to version 15.1.22.1.
The Intel WiFi Link driver package that I linked to also includes the My Wifi Technology Software. If you just want to install the driver and not the software (which I prefer), follow the instructions that I posted in the Important Information section. -
Does anyone know why HP does not provide a driver for Broadcom WLAN modules?
justinkw1 - how did you find the driver from Acer? -
Hey justinkw1,
I have a quick question.
I was planning on installing the latest Intel WiFi drivers as you instructed and leaving off My Wifi Technology Software as you did, but when the installer automatically installed My Wifi Technology Software I decided to give it a once-over just to see what it does.
From what I gathered, it seems to offer additional easy connectivity to peripheral devices through WiFi. Is this essentially correct?
I have no devices with which I would use this software at the moment, but for future reference, if I wanted to utilize such functionality would I need My Wifi Technology Software or can I do the same things without it?
Thanks! -

- Updated Synaptics TouchPad driver to version 15.2.4.4.
- Updated Synaptics TouchPad driver to version 15.2.7.0.
- Updated Intel GMA / HD Graphics driver to version 8.15.10.2279 [15.21.8(.64).2279] / 6.14.0.3074 (Audio).
- Updated Realtek PCIe Gigabit Ethernet Family Controller driver to version 6.246 for Windows Vista and version 7.037 for Windows 7.
-
It looks like the latest Synaptics Touchpad driver version (15.2.7.0) is significantly incompatible with the Envy 14.
After installing, the orange TouchPad Disable Zone light on the top left-hand corner of the device turned on, stayed on, and could be turned off no matter what I tried. In addition, the TouchPad Disable Zone feature itself was rendered inoperable. I did quite a bit of experimenting with the enabling and disabling of certain features, as well unistalling and reinstalling, in an effort to resolve these issues, but to no avail.
If anyone finds a way to fix either problem please post it. Although I don't believe it to be so, I may very well have overlooked something.
It should also be noted that Synaptics Touchpad driver version 15.2.7.0 automatically installs Synaptics Scrybe, which may be nothing more than undesirable bloatware for some users, such as myself.
EDIT:
I also tried Synaptics Touchpad driver version 15.2.4.4. Unfortunately I found it to perform woefully worse than the previous version (15.1.22.1). From the onset it was clearly apparent that something major had changed in the pointing and scrolling functions making both exceedingly touchy and jumpy even though none of my settings had been changed. For example, at the end of a scroll simply lifting my finger off of the device would make the page jump two or three lines at best and half a page at worst.
I think I'll be sitting this round of updates out.
Any insight into (or corroboration in regards to) these issues would be most appreciated! -
Some new drivers available from Acer.

Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0.82.0
Intel iAMT 7.0.0.1144

I'm also still using 15.1.22.1 and am satisfied with it. It doesn't do anything special, but it works well enough that I can forget about it and that's mainly what I want from a touchpad. I've just been in the habit of installing every update that is released to make sure all of my drivers are current.
I'm don't know what Synaptics did with 15.2.4.4 but from my experience it is terrible. -
Broadcom Bluetooth 6.4.0.901 from Acer installed fine and working properly.
-
I'm using the Jan. 22 Synaptics drivers (15.1.22), and I've tried updating to the newest drivers. Unfortunately, when I try installing it "is not a valid win32 application". I've tried the 32 and 64 bit versions. Other users seem to be having trouble with the newest drivers, according to the Envy Drivers thread.
-
Installed the latest synapticsdriver posted here and the compability with the envy isn't as good as before. The touchpad can't be turned off for example. Can I fix it somehow?
-
Wow amazing! This saved my dads dv5 gen 2 =]

I can't get the Broadcom 2070 Bluetooth 3.0 driver to install. The install starts fine but stops at one point, displays the message "There was an error in the install of assembly part
policy.8.9.Microsoft.VC80.CRT,type="win32-policy",version="8.0.50727.42",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18eb3b",processorArchitecture="amd64" More information. HRESULT: 0x800...
and then (after pressing OK) starts "undoing previous changes"
Apart from the pure gibberish (i.e. error code) there might be some translation errors above since I'm running the Finnish version of W7. I'm a bit curious as to if I've even got the right driver since I'm installing for Envy 14 and afaik its only got bluetooth 2.1+ or something (not 3.0 anyways). Help...? -

The iastordatamgr is at 25% cpu...
Never seen that before.
Also, when I update the chipset drivers it seemed to update the ati/intel GPUs too?
This is weird.
Uninstalled the RST. Then tried to re-install and got the can't install error....unpacked it and manually updated it through the device manager. Then did the normal instal via setup.exe. Now it's working fine. Go figure.
No idea why my Intel HD driver version is 8.712... I swear I saw the chipset installation utility messing with it. That btw is the same version for the ATI 5450. I dunno.
Any way everything seems to be working fine so... -
03/29/2011
- Removed Validity Fingerprint Reader driver version 4.3.110.0.
- Updated Intel WiFi Link driver to version 14.0.2.2 for Windows 7.
I had removed version 4.3.110.0 of the Validity Fingerprint Reader driver because of reported installation problems -- this package is not natively meant for the readers used in these notebook models. As a result, the driver failed to install during setup. Also, I realized that the drivers loaded for these readers are not actually WHQL Certified -- only the newer VFS471 and VFS5XXX readers are WHQL Certified in this package. -

I wanted to add this for people who have problems with DigitalPersona personal fingerprint reader software auto login feature not working with Firefox 4. You should use the latest version of HP SimplePass(7.0.74.0), it has support for Firefox4 and IE9. HP SimplePass is more robust than the DigitalPersona software.
Make sure to uninstall DigitalPersona and reboot then run CCleaner's Registry cleaner and reboot again!

Simply for reasons of documenting my experiences so that others may benefit from them in the future, I will note that the latest Synaptics Touchpad driver (15.2.8.0) like the previous driver (15.2.4.4) is significantly worse performing than the preceding driver (15.1.22.1) and all other drivers released for this device by HP since the inception of the Envy 14, all of which I have tried.
Since the 15.2.4.4 driver scrolling has been, in my opion, ruined to the point of being almost completely unusable. Whereas in previous versions scrolling was responsive, smooth, and precise, in each 15.2.X.X version it preforms in a very choppy fashion, sometimes creating the illusion that a the screen is refreshing slowly. It is also incredibly jumpy, especially when removing one's finger from the touchpad at the end of a scroll. Sometimes when doing this the screen will jump the entire length of the document being viewed, but more frequently it will jump one or two lines either up or down unless the utmost care is taken to lift one's finger directly straight up off of the touchpad.
These issues occur with all settings remaining the same between updates and cannot be eliminated, from my experience, through tweaking of settings.
Thus I am yet again sticking with the the 15.1.22.1 version of the Synaptics Touchpad driver and would not only suggest that others do the same, but also that when the next update arrives, at which time if following the current layout of the original post the 15.1.22.1 driver will no longer be listed, if the scrolling issues are not resolved 15.1.22.1 remain to be listed as the latest good version.
Please excuse what may be taken as the overly serious tone of this post. I'm not quite sure how it turned out so if it is indeed perceived that way. It was not my intention.
I'd be very interested in whether or not other people are noticing the dramatic differences that I seem to be experiencing. -
Duly noted random15. The TouchPad just doesn't seem as responsive with driver version 15.2 on my end as well, despite trying to adjust the settings.
If an updated driver becomes available, I will not be removing 15.1. Instead, I will move 15.2.8.0 down and remove 15.2.4.4.
There are other updates that I have been wanting to post for you all, but it might have to wait until the weekend since I'll be busy for the next few days. This includes updated versions of Intel Rapid Storage Technology and the IDT Audio driver, to name a few.
