Here were some updates that I made to the first post:

    03/05/2010
    • Updated HP Quick Launch Buttons to version 6.50.15.1.
    • Updated HP MediaSmart SmartMenu to version 2.1.13 for Windows Vista.

I'll try to find official links for those updates that Axel had mentioned. :)

    Justin,

the SmartMenu version you linked (sp47286) is actually 2.10 rev. C, not 2.1.13 (check the html info). It supersedes sp42238 which was 2.10 rev. A and it was the only version that worked perfectly also with Windows 7 and Quick Launch. I'll test this version of SmartMenu and let you know if it still works.

The other strange thing is that SmartMenu for W7 (sp46762) is supposed to work for both W7 & Vista, but it doesn't work on neither. It's strange why they have 2 versions, but we're lucky that the one specific for Vista works also for W7. ;)

    Thanks for the updates... ;)

Ok, I confirm that SmartMenu v2.10c + QuickLaunch v6.50.15.1 work beautifully together on W7 x64 and my HDX18 (bass+treble+volume sliders, mute button, cd eject all working perfectly).

Justin, I also noticed, after the installation, that the version of the SmartMenu.exe file is 2.1.0.13, that's why you probably referred to version 2.1.13 in your update, but I think it is best to refer to v2.10 rev. C. :)

Is it even worth installing that just go get the eject button working? Its one of the few things on the strip that I don't use (the MediaSmart and the Treble/Bass slider being the other) even when I was running Vista. The drive's physical button works well enough for me (I only open the thing like, twice a month anyway).

HP uses the version 2.10 rev. C designation for SmartMenu as a "common version name"; however, I prefer to use vendor version numbers when they are available (as shown in the HP Softpaq documentation). The main reason I do this is because the vendor version numbers more visibly show that the release is a newer version than what was released previously. :)

HP's common version naming scheme does not so much emphasize the fact that this is a new release. With HP's scheme, it could imply that this version of SmartMenu is the same as the previous revisions, but just re-packaged.

Finally, I'm glad that the current version of Quick Launch Buttons work perfectly with this release of SmartMenu. Hopefully they'll be able to straighten things out with the MediaSmart 3.x software suite soon. :)

HELP! Well, maybe too melodramatic, but not to me. I have only today noticed that my dv8t Core i7-720 was running much slower on a number of applications, not the least noticeable of which is booting up. I then looked over at my Intel Turbo boost indicator widget and noticed it is no longer jumping up from 1.6 ghz to its max of 2.8. Then I ran CPU-Z and confirmed my worse suspicions: the multiplier is stuck at 7!

I searched all over these forums and Googled it and all I find are lax references to it with no fix available. Note: there is no driver for the Intel turbo boost technology driver for the dv8t-1000 but there is one for the dv8t-1100, but the latter does not solve the problem on the dv8-1000. The driver notes an error - Code 10 - and states that it will not start. In the devices section, there is one of those tiny, yellow, annoying "caution" signs next to the driver in the list.

I have contacted HP and asked for a case to be opened and it is now. I will keep you posted.

Does anyone have experieince with this? Could it be that the computer is functioning fine and the ghz boost is occuring, just not showing up in any measurement programs, or do we have $2,000 1.6 ghz net books? By the way, my system never gets hot - I have a cooling pad and the cpu almost never goes over 60-65* C.

    Any guidance appreciated.

Has anyone been able to get the fingerprint reader working on a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on a dv6t-2000 or similar laptop?

I've tried the latest Validity driver and DigitalPersona posted on this thread but they don't seem to work. I've also tried the ones provided with my laptop, found in the SWsetup folder, that worked on the Windows 7 Home Premium x64 that came preinstalled but not on a fresh Ultimate.

At the moment I have nothing installed to ensure there are no conflicts with drivers, firewalls or antivirus. I have only been installing the driver and then DigitalPersona, that's it. I am not sure if there are anymore steps I need to take and would like ALL the steps taken by someone who got it working. If you require anymore information I will be happy to provide it.

Thanks for creating and maintaining this thread Justin. It has become the only location I need for both drivers and support.

What am I doing wrong? I installed the below quoted versions on Win7 x64 on HDX18 1200EO and now neither the volume nor the treble/bass buttons are working. The olny two buttonts that work are eject and mute ones.

All this even though I did a thorough uninstall for both, deleted remaining folders from HDD, installed Quicklaunch first, then rebooted. Install MediaSmart, then rebooted. And not it's worse than before.

Not sure what's wrong, but it is really riciculous how bad HP customer service is that even though these are rather expensive notbooks, HP can't provide at decent service whatsoever.

Any help would be very much appreciated! ;)

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I have contacted HP many, many times about getting these new Windows 7 drivers sorted out for the Quick Launch Buttons, the MediaSmart stuff, and the Tone Control Utility.

I told them all the problems we've been having (at least on my HDX 16t), went through all the troubleshooting steps they suggested, and insisted that they pass our communications on to the higher level support.

Well, it has paid off. I can confirm that all of my Quick Launch buttons, including volume, treble/bass, and eject are working. I (unlike Dundy) am incredibly impressed with how cooperative and willing to help HP has been. They have been friendly and understanding of our frustration.

Currently, the only issue I have currently having with my laptop (running Windows 7 64x) is the on-screen display for the treble/bass slider. The slider itself works, but those hideous vertical lines are simply annoying. I contacted HP about it again after the latest drivers were released, and they said that the treble/bass slider is being worked on and will be fixed in an upcoming driver update.

So, I am happy, and I think HP has been incredible in trying to satisfy all of the minor problems with their new drivers.

So, if present, you use the vendor version field of the CVA file? The problem is that a user wants to know which version he's using he should have access to the CVAs to make a comparison. That's why I was suggesting to stick to HP's schema...we could put both fields in the table of drivers. :)

Anyway...it's your call...you have the final word... ;)

    Thanks for the reply Koomazaz.

Can you outline what you did?

I've been reading a lot of threads of people running the setup in compatibility mode and as administrator for all users but it didn't work when I tried. I'm just wondering if I missed a step or something.

    Hello Alex,

did you use below links in justinkw1's table at page 1 ?

    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp47501-48000/sp47591.exe (HP Quick Launch Buttons)

    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp47001-47500/sp47286.exe (SmartMenu)

And in what order did you install them ?

    thanks in advance

I always download softpaqs from official links and I always follow these steps when I update those 2 packages:

    1. I uninstall HP QuickLaunch and SmartMenu, then rebooted.

    2. Make sure the uninstaller deletes all directories created by the previous setups. If you find QuickLaunch directory and SmartMenu directory after reboot, delete those manually.

    3. I then install latest version of QuickLaunch, then reboot.

    4. Install latest version of SmartMenu, then reboot.

Some reboots could be avoided, but with these ty HP setups I want to play on the safe side. ;)

Also, be sure to have the latest BIOS on your notebook, with old BIOS versions I had the same problems.

I tested sp47591 (HP Quick Launch Buttons v6.50.15.1) with sp47286 (HP MediaSmart SmartMenu v2.10c) and it works perfectly.

Don't use SmartMenu 3.x...it's not working and Tone Control utility is not needed.

Also, what BIOS version are you using?

The SmartMenu 3.x programs and menu all seem to be working great on my fresh copy of Windows 7. I did discover that you MUST have MediaSmart MVP installed for the menu to work at all.

I installed the latest version of the Quick Launch Buttons (as found on page 1), followed by the latest version of MediaSmart SmartMenu, followed by the latest version of MediaSmart MVP. Then you can add whatever other MediaSmart apps you'd like.

You are correct about the Tone Control utility. It's not needed and the graphical bug is still present, but HP is working on fixing that now (according to their tech support).

Thanks for your findings, but I would never suggest to install all that bloatware (MVP) in order to have the keys working when there's a lighter/more practical solution. :)

So my recommendations are still the same: use SmartMenu 2.x (Vista's version) with the latest QuickLaunch and the updated BIOS.

Well, the strange thing is that I was using this version until now as well, that's listed as most up-to-date for Win7 x64 as well. But when I did the uninstall + delete dirs, reboot, so the thorough and carefull installation of things, it became worse than before. Volume and treble bass bars don't even show up on screen, however buttons are funcioning, changes the volume, etc. Strange.

Will try remove them once again and reinstall the same recommended versions for a second time.

The IDT Audio driver cannot have anything to do with this?

    BIOS version is F.32

    results a few hours later:

Nah, still not good. Uninstalled QuickLaunch+Smartmenu + even MVP then reinstalled MVP + quicklaunch + Smartmenu, but still the same problem, it's not working.

Is the only issue you're having the fact that there is no on-screen display when you adjust the volume? I'm not certain, but I believe that HP purposefully removed the on-screen display because it was annoying and minimized full-screen applications (like games) any time the volume needed to be adjusted.

As I said, I'm not certain they did that on purpose, but the games minimizing was one of the issues I reported to HP, and I think they may have removed the on-screen display as a result.

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

I was wondering if it is related to "HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection" driver we have listed in the first page, an update of the sensor driver?

I didn't install it, but I was wondering if someone else received the update notification. :)

I'm looking at this driver through the Microsoft Update Catalog. It is a newer version of the HP ProtectSmart driver, so I'll be putting this up on the original post shortly. :)

I may have found out why the fingerprint reader does not work of my dv6t-2000.

I'm pretty sure the Validity drivers offered on the first page are only for the VFS201 fingerprint model as the extracted files located in "C:\SwSetup\SP45995\Driver\" seem to only contain the INF files for VFS201. Another Validity installer had the INF files for VFS201, VFS300 and VFS301. Btw I need the VFS301 drivers for Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

I will dig further and hopefully find a fix to help other people who are having the same issue.

Update 1: It seems that the drivers bundled with the DigitalPersona software offered on this forum are the Authentec ones. Since I installed the drivers for VFS201 mentioned above it couldn't find my reader, which is VFS301, and then installed the Authentec ones before installing DigitalPersona. Since the drivers are incompatible the whole thing doesn't work.

    • Updated HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection driver to version 4.0.6.1 (thanks Axel Foley).

@vthiru: I will be looking into this and seeing if I need to update the driver post as necessary. :)

For Windows 7 users: I recommend installing the most recent Application Compatibility Update that Microsoft had posted. Apparently it enables additional application functionality for HP MediaSmart. You can grab the update from Microsoft Update or you can manually download the update using the links below.

Thanks Justin and I have found the solution to my problem and will post the details up later today as I am at work now. I was going to post them last night but my internet connection died.

The drivers you will need to add are found here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&softwareitem=ob-79644-1&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN and are only for Windows 7 (both x86 and x64). The version stated is 1.00 A but I think that's the package version and I'm sure the driver is 2.1.0.2 but will confirm when I get home. From what I saw when I skimmed the folder extracted to swsetup, it supports all three models.

Is there any way to change the sensitivity of the sensors in drives to make it park the heads at a lower setting? I've had my computer for 7 months now and I still can't figure it out~

I'm gonna copy pieces of my earlier post here again as some of the content follows on from it.

I'm pretty sure the Validity drivers offered on the first page are only for the VFS201 fingerprint model as the extracted files located in "C:\SwSetup\SP45995\Driver\" seem to only contain the INF files for VFS201. Since I installed the drivers for VFS201 mentioned above it couldn't find my reader, which is VFS301, and then installed the Authentec ones before installing DigitalPersona. Since the drivers are incompatible the whole thing doesn't work.

Here are the steps and clean copies of the files required to get your Validity fingerprint reader working on any x86 or x64 version of Windows 7:

    1. First of all you need to grab the driver from this link ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp46501-47000/sp46880.exe. This is the driver for the Validity Fingerprint Sensor for Windows 7 only (both x86 and x64). I can confirm that the driver version is indeed 2.1.0.2. I'm pretty sure this also includes the drivers for all the models as I can see INF files for them but this will need to be verified by people who have the other two models (VFS201 and VFS300).

    2. Grab the DigitalPersona setup file, which I extracted from the original setup files, from either http://uploadmirrors.com/download/NAXCV7PR/Setup_x86.msi (~24.4 MB) for x86 or http://uploadmirrors.com/download/1QA0MDQJ/Setup_x64.msi (~31.4 MB) for x64. The originals contained both the Authentec drivers and DigitalPersona. When run it would first check for drivers and if they were not found it would install Authentec ones and then install DigitalPersona. The extracted files have not been modified by me in any way and can be verified by checking their digital signatures (Right click on file then select Properties and then select the Digital Signatures tab).

    3. Run sp46880.exe and on the screen it asks you the location to save files change it to "C:\swsetup\SP46880" (this is optional but otherwise the default value puts the files in "C:\swsetup\" which makes this folder look messy). Continue with the installation and you will notice the setup close abruptly once its finished. This is normal and means the installation is complete. You do not need to restart or shutdown your computer.

    4. Run which ever Setup_x??.msi file you required and restart when done. The fingerprint reader should now work.

Thanks vthiru for your insight. After looking at the current Validity package I have posted, it does not include VS30x support. I will update the link when I have the chance. :) There's actually a newer Validity Fingerprint Reader package than the one you provided, so I think I will use the one that I found instead.

As for the setup files pertaining to Authentec and DigitalPersona, note that Authentec is actually another fingerprint reader manufacturer which provides drivers (they are NOT compatible with the Validity fingerprint reader) -- so I'm assuming this setup file is provided solely for DigitalPersona. :) What is the version?

EDIT: I see you have posted updates. :) I'll put them up in a bit.

In regards to the version of the DigitalPersona setup files I uploaded they are the same version as the ones you provided which are 4.11.3805. I'm not sure if I made myself clear but the files I uploaded are actually sourced from the setup files you provided. I simply ran the install and then copied only the setup file for DigitalPersona from my Temp directory while leaving the Authentec driver install file behind.

I really don't get this. Uninstalled MVP + SmartMenu + QuickLaunch, then reinstalled only QuickLaunch and SmartMenu but I still don't see the grapihcs for the volume + Treble/Bass buttons. As a matter of fact I think the treble/bass buttons aren't changing anything. Volume changes, mute button is always lit up (orangish color) but does mute properly but no visual effect. Eject button also working.

In what way could my DX18 1200EO Win7 x64 can be different from you? Can you please list what HP products you have installed? Could the IDT drivers affect this?

Dundy, I have been waiting on your results. I have the same issue you have. I installed SM and QL only. SM started crashing and I removed it

Hello. I'm not sure exactly what is different between my configuration and Axel's, but I was having the exact same thing happen with the exact same drivers as you, Dundy.

I have Windows 7 Professional x64 on my HDX 16t, with the very latest of every driver installed (minus the Tone Control Utility). Every feature is currently working on my laptop with the exception of the on-screen display for the Treble/Bass slider. The slider itself does adjust the levels, though.

As I had said previously, the Treble/Bass sliders are working with the latest versions of the drivers and MediaSmart programs installed. You can see the sliders move under the Control Panel --> Sound --> Speakers --> Properties --> Tone (I think this is the menu... I'm on a different computer right now, but the panel I'm speaking of is somewhere around there...) So, we know the treble/bass sliders are working.

As for the on-screen display for the volume slider, with the current versions of drivers, you must have MVP installed. If you install it, the display shows up. If you uninstall it, it goes away.

If you want treble/bass sliders, you must install the bugged 2.00A version of the Tone Control Utility (posted on the HP Support site).

These are just my findings, and I think they are correct. If anyone has had a different experience with the latest drivers and MediaSmart 3.x, please let us know!

Thanks for making this a great resource, guys.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the info Koomazaz, I checked it in Control Panel and not only do I not see treble/bass sliders, but it's not working either. The Tone Control Utility I used for a while, but I found it annoying that when I was watching a movie and used the remote control to adjust volume it always switch back from full screen to smaller window size and I couldn't switch back to full screen with the remote control. Try and see if you have this problem. Otherwise, I'd be happy to use it.

FYI, in case you didn't see my prev. posts, the volume/tr. sliders don't show for me either even if MVP is installed. Guess I'll just have to wait for the first Tone Control version which will not make the movie player turn off full screen mode when adjusting volume.

Have a feeling we're running out of ideas, however, if any left, let me know and I'll try - unless you tell me to reinstall Win7 ;)

    Thanks again.

Justin, it's a pleasure for me helping out. And thanks for your comments, let me just add that without your work, I wouldn't have started mine. ;)

Keep up the great job, I'll try to be here as much as I can, but my life is pretty busy, and the time spent here is stolen to my sleep... :D

I noticed you updated many drivers...great...I love updating them...thanks a lot my friend. ;)

use 195.81 from from laptopvideo2go oddly enough it lists it as the recent one for GT230 which we have.
Don't forget to install the modified inf file and insert it in the same folder where the driver is extracted before installing it.

Realtek has already released a 7.017 version of its driver for the Realtek Ethernet Family Controller. It is found at their website... :)
