Re the IDT update, the notes say it's meant for the Envy 15 and when I tried to install it on my DV8, it failed to install saying my hardware was unsupported by this update package. I wonder whether it is truly not appropriate for the DV8 hardware or if there is some special procedure I need to use to get it to install on my system?
-
Could you provide the hardware ID of your IDT audio device? You can find it in the Details tab of the device's properties in the Device Manager.
I tried it on my dv6t Quad with no problems. -
Sure, the hardware ID, (using Everest), is: Hardware ID HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_111D&DEV_7603&SUBSYS_103C7001&REV_1002
It appears the device id for the IDT device on the DV8 is different from that in this particular version of the driver. I'm not sure whether it would be advisable or not to edit the .inf to modify the device id so this driver would install. I'm inclined to take the cautious route and just pass on this one unless someone else has success with it on their DV8. -
For anyone who's looking to make an HP purchase, Bing CashBack is currently at 25% right now--it only went to 25-30% 3 times last year. Ongoing thread with instructions here:
http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?threadid=1981882
Note that use of coupon codes have a 100% chance of canceling any CB! -
Some of the users in the dv3t driver thread are having the same issue as well too -- looking inside, it seems that the driver INF also contains your hardware ID (just like those in the dv3t thread with their respective IDs):
The REV part of the ID string should not matter.Code:%ST.DeviceDesc%=STHDA,HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_111D&DEV_7603&SUBSYS_103C7001
Not quite sure what is going on here -- the driver should theoretically work, unless there is some sort of blocking mechanism from the front-end setup exe. Maybe you can try installing it manually via Device Manager's Update Driver wizard (as I suggested in the dv3t thread) and see if that works. You can always go back to version 6255 if all else fails -- it seems everyone is content with this previous version.
-
Thanks for the additional info Justin. Before trying to install it again via device manager, I think I'll wait to see if any of the DV3t users have some luck with that method. Hopefully someone will try it soon, although you are right that the previous IDT driver seemed flawless to me. But perhaps they made the new one even better.
Oh, I just remembered, on another thread, another DV8 user reported it installed fine for him (not sure what method he used, but it was probably just clicking on the .exe).
-
I successfully was able to update the driver itself through device manager, but the IDT software interface did not update and remained at the prior version level.
-
Peter: I guess you decided to continue pursuing it... Must be more important to you than I had been led to understand.
Now that you're digging into it, I hope you find a satisfactory answer. -
Important for dv6t Quad (2xxx series) and dv7t Quad (3xxx series) notebook users: a new BIOS update is now available, now up on the first post. Please read the Important Information section pertaining to the BIOS if you haven't done so, before proceeding to flash.
04/19/2010
- Updated BIOS for dv6-2xxx (dv6 Quad) and dv7-3xxx (dv7 Quad) to version F.1A.
-
Well, with device manager and system restore, it's pretty easy to test and roll back and I had heard that one DV8 user had successfully installed it, and that the Device ID for my unit was, in fact, listed in the driver's .inf, so it was obviously intended to work with my hardware. So all that changed my mind about trying to get it to work with my system.
Where I'm at now is I have the updated driver installed but it does not appear to be working w/o issue with the old software so I'm going to roll back to the previous version.
Edit: The rollback went fine.

lovelaptops MY FRIENDS CALL ME JEFF!
Hey Justin, hate to bug you, but i never understood what the F.17 BIOS was supposed to do or correct, and i have the same question about the F.21. Nobody likes the sweaty palms that an HP BIOS flash brings on, so it would be nice to know there are benefits. Do you have any idea? (I kinda reamed you - without meaning to - on your quote from HP about the reason for the F.17 "update." It said something like: aids in enabling you to go from f.12 to f.15 without incurring..." Never made sense. -
According to the HP documentation for F.21, the only change that was made since F.17 is:
This is a bit more straightforward than the last release they posted.
-
Sorry, it didn't work after all that...
At least the rollback was successful.... white-knuckled?
-
No, not really because I knew that if the rollback didn't work, I could always just use system restore and that almost always has worked for me, at least with W7. MS has really improved the effectiveness and reliability of system restore in W7, imo.
I've gotten into the habit of creating a quick restore point before I do any mods so I can quickly and effortlessly revert back if something gets screwed up. In fact, I have a shortcut that I can click on that will create a restore point with just the one click! I play around a lot with different apps and tweaks so it's really useful for me.
But like I mentioned elsewhere, it's no substitute for real backups or clones. But it's very easy and convenient to have this additional method of undoing things. -
I heard you! Horse is DEAD!
-
OK, but you might also be interested in doing this little tweak.
Note: You can also put the "instant" SR shortcuts in the start menu, in addition or instead of following the instructions which tell you to put them on the desktop.
I won't say anything more about it.
-
I checked my system protection and found that System Restore is enabled on my Dv8. Thought you'd be happy to know. -
lovelaptops MY FRIENDS CALL ME JEFF!
Yes, quite agree.
But my more important question is: do you know how I can get a roll back to the previous version of the Intel 5100 wifi driver? Ever since I installed the most recent one, I find my wifi card spontaneously disconnects from time to time. I find I can't connect to a web page out of the blue and look and sure enough, the blue light on the keyboard is showing orange (off). I know it is not from me brushing against it, because it happens too often and I very rarely encountered this before.
Thing is, neither HP nor Intel has the old driver and the "roll back" option on devices is greyed out. Any ideas appreciated.
Edit: Never mind! Went to HP driver site and found something to click to get older versions, installed the November 2009 version, which never gave me a lick of trouble. Fingers crossed
Thanks for all your hard work that we all benefit by! -

HP Pavillion DV8 (dv8-1090ev) USB Flash Drive BIOS Recovery
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
6GB RAM
OK here goes nothing! Its a work in progress and i need some feedback.
Yesterday I see a BIOS update on HP Systems Messages on my beloved DV8.
I was not thinking at the time so just followed instructions closed all programs etc and clicked start to flash the BIOS and upgrade to F.21. Few minutes pass and my desktop is frozen with a error message "Out of memory blabla.. close few programs and retry"... but i never get my mouse and keyboard control to kill anything... So rebooted and now i see a black screen with message from BIOS stating that Cooling Fan is not running with error 902.
The fan is running fine... so now i try to flash the BIOS.
I Downloaded F.21 and F.17 BIOS images the only ones available...
If anyone has another version please message me
Extract them and find "7001F17.exe" and "Crisis_BIOS" folder containing "7001.bin" and for version 21 i get same structure.
I happen to have HP's USB Digital Drive so I am using that.
First Attempt with 7001.bin from F.17 version of BIOS copied from Crisis_BIOS folder to USB root
1. Removed Laptop Battery
2. Removed Laptop Power
3. Did Hard Reset (Press n Hold Power Button for 5 to 30 seconds)
4. Plug in USB drive in Left Port; Hold Win+B keys and Plug in the Power
5. While holding Win+B key I pressed the Power Button
6. After couple of seconds the USB is accessed and i can see activity
7. 10 to 15 Loud Beeps I keep holding the Win+B key
8. And laptop shutsdown
9. I remove power and usb
10. Plug in the power and press power
11. Laptop turns on and shuts down
12. I press power button again and it turns on to show me same message again Cooling Fan (902)
I repeat same steps with F.21 version and get same results only with different error code. Cooling Fan (908)
After reading a lot of forums i findout i should work with a xxx.FD file! So i check the 7001F17.exe and 7001F21.exe and find 7001F17.FD and 7001F21.FD files in their respective exez. Well the 7001.bin from Crisis_BIOS was exactly 2MB and the 7001F*.FD are exactly 2.5MB.
Anyway Next i findout the platform.ini lists PlatformName1=7001
Next I findout my Motherboard Part number 573758-001 but i cant understand what is my motherboard model!
I also find 7F0994 along with the part numbers.
Now i decided to name my files as following:
573758.bin
573758.fd
573758.rom
573758F21.bin
573758F21.fd
573758F21.rom
7001.bin
7001.fd
7001.rom
7001F21.bin
7001F21.fd
7001F21.rom
7F0994.bin
7F0994.fd
7F0994.rom
7F0994F21.bin
7F0994F21.fd
7F0994F21.rom
AND
573758.bin
573758.fd
573758.rom
573758F17.bin
573758F17.fd
573758F17.rom
7001.bin
7001.fd
7001.rom
7001F17.bin
7001F17.fd
7001F17.rom
7F0994.bin
7F0994.fd
7F0994.rom
7F0994F17.bin
7F0994F17.fd
7F0994F17.rom
Now I have the files ready... BUT
When i followed the above steps with Win+B key my DV8 kept showing me the cooling fan error instead of reading the USB. Maybe there is a check on how many times you can use the Win+B key the easy way
So after another 10 hours i accidentally findout the revival of Win+B key!
Here it is:
1. Removed Laptop Battery
2. Removed Laptop Power
3. Did Hard Reset (Press n Hold Power Button for 5 to 30 seconds)
4. Plug in USB drive in Left Port; Hold Win+B keys and Plug in the Power
5. While holding Win+B key I pressed the Power Button AND KEPT IT PRESSED
6. Laptop turns on and shutsdown, keep holding the Win+B key
7. Press the power button down again and KEEP it pressed
8. The power cycle turns quicker, keep the Win+B key pressed
9. Press the power button down again and KEEP it pressed
10. Do this 3 to 4 times.... with Win+B key pressed at all times
11. on 5th time Just press the power button to let it turn on...dont keep it pressed
12. And viola! it read the USB again...
13. But!!!! No Go!
14. For some reason it is not taking xx.FD files at all no matter what i do
Now after another 6 hours...
I use the link http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c01670688&lang=en&cc=us&taskId=101&prodSeriesId=3688712&prodTypeId=321957
to follow its steps:
1. I created the folders as
"\Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\current"
"\Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\previous"
2. Copied the files in both folders as well as root of USB
3. I downloaded Copy As
Since i wanted to try files with all UPPERCASE! It Helps!
Saved me a lot of time renaming 71 files.
Re-tried all the files again ... same steps but it reads the usb and doesnt want the 2.5MB xx.FD files... however it always responds to F.17/F.21 Crisis_BIOS folder version 7001.bin... goes through the beeps... but same thing....
So far I am stuck here...... I have one more trick up my sleeve lets see what happens...
If anyone has any more tricks that I should try please post here... EXPERTS please help...

I have made some updates to the first post.
Note that the new NVIDIA graphics driver is from Microsoft Update; read the Important Information section for more details on installation. Also uninstall all previous versions of the graphics driver first before installing the new version.
Finally, a new IDT High Definition Audio driver from Microsoft Update is available! It must be installed through the Update Driver wizard within Device Manager. Hopefully these drivers will solve any incompatibility issues if you had encountered them.
I will be trying both the NVIDIA graphics driver and IDT audio driver -- feel free to post your experiences.

Windows 7 x64:
The IDT Driver 6.10.6276.0 is non-functional on a DV7 2140eg (C2Q, HD 4650). The device-manager shows that it can't check the certificate and the IDT High Definition-Entry has a yellow exclamation mark.
Even the Windows 7 Update-Program shows an error during the installation. So it seems that there is a faulty / incomplete driver-set on the microsoft servers.

Couldn't get the new Webcam update to install on my DV8.
The new video driver was offered to me by Windows Update and I installed it through WU as well without having to make any mods. So far it seems to be working fine, including up and downclocking. -

I'm experiencing problems with my HP dv8 in terms of installing updates. Yesterday, HP Advisor indicated I needed to update my Lightscribe, HP Media Smart DVD and HP Media Smart MVP. I turned off my firewall and antivirus program and applied the software updates. Did a Restart and then checked History to verify the updates had been made. Unfortunately, it indicated that all three updates failed. I tried again using the Safe Startup mode with the same result.
I have BIOS F.06. I've been reluctant to update to F.21 given several reports on this forum of owners experiencing problems doing so and bricking their computers. Is the older BIOS the likely cause for the software update failures or is it some other cause? -
You do not have to update your BIOS in order to run software updates. It looks like F.21 is a stable update, and I think it would be a good idea for you to flash. However, that choice is up to you.aloharay said: ↑I'm experiencing problems with my HP dv8 in terms of installing updates. Personally, I would not rely on HP Advisor to install your software updates. Use my links from the first post instead!
They're probably even more up-to-date than the ones that HP Advisor is asking you to update to.
(Whoo! 1,000 posts!) -
yep, when you can't trust them to keep thier site updated, there is no reason they would keep a wizard updated either.
-
Indeed, there is an update for the HP Support Assistant.
But seriously, who uses this tool anyway? It's not worth my time looking where this tool creates its log files and looking there for the download URL or use Fiddler to find that out.
BTW:
HP Webcam software still tells me that I need Microsoft Windows Media Player 11 or newer, although I have WMP 12 which came with Win7… -
Just a thought -- although I know the driver thread is getting a little crowded in terms of what is supported, but I'm wondering whether I should expand support to all Core i3 and Core i5-based dv6 and dv7 notebooks (the non-Quads
). Apparently their builds compared to the Quad Editions are pretty much the same now but with a choice of Intel HD graphics instead. I keep forgetting, but I am also going to put up Broadcom wireless LAN drivers too.
Feedback is encouraged.

I wouldn't see a problem if the Core i3/i5 model drivers were added. It's a big driver list, but formatted very well, so it doesn't take long for new readers to your list to find where everything is. It would also bring in some more readers to the thread, so more potential insightful posts and contributions.
I think the biggest consideration to deciding to add them is your time; I know it's not easy finding the time to keep up with all the driver updates so make sure you don't add too much more work for yourself! -
Might be a good idea to start using Spoiler tags and putting the tables in them.

Being a little too futuristic there (or am I?)
I also appreciate your feedback on what you think about me adding support for the Core i3 and i5 models. I still need more opinions though! Still worried that the driver thread will become too bloated for all the products that it will support.
As an aside, I do get busy outside of NBR as well -- classes, being a board member on a student engineering council, and other activities keep me occupied these days. Despite them, I'll do my best in continuing to get the updates posted!
I'll think about it, but since it's not too necessary as mentioned by others -- I might hold off on it for a while. If there's more support for it in the future, I'll add it.amires said: ↑@justinkw1

i would suggest not to upgrade BIOS to F.21 from within windows... it has very high probability to crash if tried with winflash. i would suggest following:
1. Backup current BIOS
2. Create a Boot time BIOS recovery and update scenario
3. Update BIOS at boot
My DV8 is now with the vendor to either recover the bios or change motherboard.. it can take anywhere from 3 days to 4 weeks depending upon if my BIOS is recovered or otherwise. -

FWIMBW, I updated to F.21 from F.15 with no problems, but I suppose caution is advised. It's always a stressful thing, almost holding one's breath waiting to see if the flash completes without any fatal errors.

While I agree with your three-steps (a best practice), I strongly disagree when you say "it has very high probability": based on what facts do you say so?ziggyz27 said: ↑i would suggest not to upgrade BIOS to F.21 from within windows... it has very high probability to crash if tried with winflash. i would suggest following:

I owned lots of notebooks of different vendors (mainly HP), and I've always upgraded BIOS versions with the vendor's utility under Windows and never had one single problem. And I'm not alone, many people do it like me and don't have any problems too.
I know s*it can happen, but it's an exception, reading your post it seems that 9 out of 10 times you brick your notebook, and that's not the truth.

You can roughly install the drivers listed on the first post in the order they are in from top to bottom. It doesn't really matter a whole lot I think -- just make sure you know what you should be installing though. Also, you may need to search for driver/software packages with international language support. I can guarantee English, but you might have to search around for Greek support (it is doable though).

ONE THOUSAND!
I expected that it would come soon, just not like this.
I haven't even thought up of an amazing prize for the user who created the 1000th post, I'll have to think about that a little more...
Back to business: I could put Wireless Assistant up, but then I'll probably put up Support Assistant too since it's only fair.
If I do put both of these up, then I will designate them as optional as I had done with the MediaSmart suite. In addition, I'll post them across all the HP/Compaq driver threads.
What do you think of me adding support for Core i3/i5-based dv6 and dv7 notebooks to this thread? I still haven't heard a whole lot in terms of opinions on this. -
If, as is likely the case, those systems use the same drivers as the quad core systems, I think it would be fine to support them in this thread.justinkw1 said: ↑What do you think of me adding support for Core i3/i5-based dv6 and dv7 notebooks to this thread? On the other hand, if they use different drivers, I think it would be preferable if those systems were to be supported in a separate thread of their own, just to make it easier for users to figure out what applies to a particular system.
