This forum is totally great i own an HDX16T 1200 AND i was wondering how to find drivers after its discountinued they dont update them often at the hp.com ! thx a lot for helping us ..you are doing a great job
-
Justin,
as a general rule of thumb, if the drivers for those NBs are at least 80% the same as ours I'd say it would be fare to use this thread.
Regarding the Wireless & Support Assistant: the first one is a tiny, nice, and useful piece of software...the second is BLOATWARE...so I don't agree with your statement.
-
The only thing I like about the support assistant is it tells me if System restore somehow gets turned off w/o my knowing, which is useful. But it's useless as far as updating, imo. But I do appreciate that extra check because I have had System restore get turned off on me, not sure how and I am one who finds system restore to be quite useful on occasion, (although it doesn't replace the need for real backups, of course).
-
pae77,
I'd suggest Acronis TrueImage...
-
Ehm ... I tried to install the HP Quick Launch Buttons from the main page, on my Pavilion dv7-3170el, but the slide volume sensor under the display does not work ... any idea?
Other drivers works fine.
-
I do use Acronis TIH 2010 already, and it's a great program, but I also find system restore to be a quick and convenient fix for many little issues that don't necessarily require doing a full blown restore.
As I said in my original post on the subject, system restore doesn't take the place of a real backup such as the kind that Acronis performs. -
Fair enough, I'll take the Assistants into consideration.
Non quad-core second generation dv6 and third generation dv7 notebooks have the same configuration as far as I can tell now in terms of build and components, aside from the fact that they can have Intel HD graphics and obviously, a dual-core Core i3 or i5 processor. I will likely add support for these notebooks in by the end of this week, if not earlier.
As a side note, next generation dv6-3000 (3rd generation) and dv7-4000 (4th generation) notebooks will probably have their own driver thread, and will probably be shared with the ENVY 17 at this point. These products have yet to appear in most parts of the world, so stay tuned! -
Does anyone know when digital persona will be compatible with google chrome?or is there any similar software?
-
Hi Justin,
I just wanted add my thanks to you for creating and maintaining this critically important and helpful thread. Especially since HP is so negligent and slow in maintaining their "official" support site, this is a very valuable resource indeed and much appreciated. -
lovelaptops MY FRIENDS CALL ME JEFF!
Hey Peter,
Owe you a PM (been crazy lately, sorry), but remind me, did F21 provide any noticeable benefits? Anything working worse? I'll get back to you soon. J. -
I haven't noticed anything better or worse. But it adds some functionality to detect fan errors, iirc, so I think it's worth installing.
-
Justin,
I think there's a new Mediasmart Webcam driver just posted on the official site: HP MediaSmart Webcam Software HP Pavilion dv8t-1000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
Say's it's for non touch models. Not sure what that means though. Is my DV8 a touch enabled model because it has a touchpad? Anyway, below are the details:
Description: This package provides the HP MediaSmart Webcam Software to enable the web camera in supported non-touch technology notebook models that are running a supported operating system.
Details and specifications
File name:
sp48335.exe [1/1, 119.16M]
System requirements:
Released: 2010-04-23
Version: 4.0.1.2626 C
Compatibility: Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise (32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise (64-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Home Basic (64-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Starter (32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Home Basic (32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit) -
For HP notebooks there are ways for reflashing the BIOS (I believe through the keyboard controller), I successfully helped a friend to reflash his DV7 (not a DV7 Quad), which was broken because the flashing tool from HP had a bug and chose the wrong BIOS image (the package had two BIOS images included for revisions with different GPUs or something).
-
Sounds like it's always a good idea to wait a while, before going ahead and installing the latest BIOS from HP, to see if any problems with it are reported by others, before attempting to flash one's own machine.
Speaking of BIOS', I was disappointed to see that the BIOS for my DV8 did not include an option to set a hard drive password. It only had an option to set an administrator password and a power on password, neither of which are as secure as the Hard Disk Password. A hard disk password will prevent the drive from being accessed even if it is removed from the original host machine and moved to another machine. It's really a shame HP doesn't include this option in their BIOS' for the DV8 (and, I assume, other non business model HP's). -
Hi pae77, I'm aware of this update and I am looking into it. I've just been pretty busy the past few days so I haven't had the time to update. Updating shortly
-
This driver thread is now compatible with dual-core dv6-2xxx and dv7-3xxx notebooks! A lot of the components were similar if not the same, so it was pretty easy to add support for them.
05/06/2010
- Updated HP MediaSmart Webcam to version 4.0.2626 (4.0 C1).
- Added HP MediaSmart Photo version 4.0.3911 (4.0 A13).
- Added Intel Graphics Media Accelerator / Intel HD Graphics drivers.
05/07/2010
- Added support for dual-core dv6-2xxx and dv7-3xxx notebooks.
Note that MediaSmart has incremented versions and this is somewhat confusing me -- Cyberlink and HP might be renaming/consolidating some of the utilities which I will report back on once all of them have been released. -
It's a little confusing why HP left the old versions of these two latest mediasmart apps up on their support page so that both versions are available for download.
-
Whats the difference between " HP MediaSmart MVP Software" and " HP MediaSmart Photo Software"?
Are they recommended or does the larger one "MVP" do the same as the photo software?
So far, I haven't missed either, but they are both so big, I'm hesitant to even install them unless they are worth it?
Any suggestions? -
Well regarding the photo software, there are much better free and paid options. For free, consider Faststone Image Viewer and Picasa. FIV works fantastic as the default image viewer, although it also does editing and slide shows. Picasa is a great app for easy editing of photos. Although there is some overlap between these two programs, they really work well together and much better than HP's photo editing software. Another two free apps that are useful for more advanced editing are Gimp and Microsoft Paint.net.
I personally use Faststone Image Viewer for just viewing and showing photos even though I also use the big paid apps (Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom) for editing. Currently there is a free beta of Lightroom 3 that Adobe has made available. It will expire sometime later this year around the time that the new final version becomes available.
About the MVP software, I haven't tried it yet. -
I'd guess that for their MediaSmart 4.0 series, they are breaking apart the Music/Video/Photo software into three separate programs... They did this with the Live TV and Internet TV apps for version 3. We'll just have to wait and see what they do. -
Mind You, if you install the NEW Photo software, it will render you musicless program from hp. meaning, it will break the bond between the mvp software and the music and video software will be uninstalled, only the photo will remain.
-
Funny... maybe vice versy too.. based on which one installs last steals the associations.
I haven't installed either yet.
Knowing how HP likes to be all inclusive and delve into areas they are not qualified to delve into and attempt to steal the whole desktop, I haven't trusted it and will most likely stick with my own selections unless I hear strong reason to do otherwise. -
I think you are wise to stick to your own, mostly non HP selections.
I use other apps for everything but have still, up to this point, left the HP apps on my machine, but will eventually probably be removing them. They still work even though I have changed the file associations so that they do not automatically come up for music, video and photos and MVP is still installed on my machine even though I installed the latest photo and webcam apps. But so far, I find these apps to be basically useless.
I haven't had an opportunity to set up the TV tuner (no decent over the air reception where I am, at least with the stock antenna), so I don't know if I'm going to be needing the HP TV software or not yet.
So on my system, these HP apps do no harm, except they are taking up some disk space, which I currently have plenty of so I'm not in any particular hurry to eliminate them. -
Someone can help me? I Have a HP Pavilion dv7-3170el and reinstalled Windows 7. When I touch the volume on my keyboard to increase or decrease the volume, it would appear on the screen for 1 second.
Now after reinstalling, it doesn't show on the screen anymore when I touch the volume increase decrease on my laptop. I would like to know what is the control software for this utility. It seems that is one of the MediaSmart HP suite but which?
Thanks guys for the answers. I'll just became crazy to solve this enigma ...

The base drivers on the OEM system has parts not available on the download site... I did a fresh install and had the same issue....
I have managed to get my treble volume to show onscreen now but my volume does not even though it does work.... just doesn't show on the screen.
I wrote myself instructions as to what I did so I would have them if I needed them again..... I have the DV8T...
Hopefully this will give you some ideas if not be the answer....
I can send you that actual drivers if these links don't work anymore:
How to get HP Tone Control Utility to Work for my DV8T CTO 1100:
1. Make sure you have the latest HP Mediasmart Smartmenu v3.1 C 1-2010 loaded "sp46762.exe" from HPs website for the DV8T.
2. Next you need the driver called "sp45617.exe" Version 2.00A 2009-09-28
This driver is not under the list drivers for the DV8T, but rather the "HP HDX16-1360es Premium Notebook PC" located Here: HP Tone Control Utility HP HDX X16-1360ES Premium Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
3. It will appear to install but no indication it installed will be noted... it really just expanded the files and you have to install it manually.... heres how:
4. Open Device manager (Right click on computer and to to properties, choose at top left)
5. Now highlight anything in the list and go to "Action"
6. Choose Add legacy hardware and hit next
7. Pick "install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced), then hit next
8. Scroll down to "Media Center Extender" and hit next
9. Highlight it and Hit next again and ok to get out.
10. Reboot... your Treble/Bass slider should now work! -
By God! It seems very hard ... and complex. I'm attempting to solve this nuisance from days ...

Looks like Microsoft has fixed the latest IDT Audio Driver package 6.10.6276.0. I installed it today from Microsoft update. Works fine
GO FINLAND GO!! -
This is the direct download link of Microsoft's IDT Audio Driver package 6.10.6276.0 (4MB cab file):
http://download.windowsupdate.com/m..._83f4717a07db2fb306557661360f4b3b1fd5e7ca.cab
It's tagged as a Windows 7 driver, but I think it should also work on Vista.
Unpack the cab, then use the driver update wizard from the Device Manager.
Can someone else please confirm if it installs fine? In particular, dv6/dv7/dv8 users, HDX users should be fine as it works perfectly on my HDX18.
Once confirmed, Justin could publish it.
Cheers. -
Numbers 4 thru 9 is bascially how you install any driver manually.
Sometimes these goofy drivers are released and when you run them they expand and go onto your hardrive but nothing gets installed or activated.... almost like simply unzipping something to the hardrive but never initiating the executable to make it run.
Someone may have another way.. thats just what worked for me. -
Re the new IDT driver:
What is the correct method to install this .cab driver? -
There's another way, that doesn't require the buggy Tone Control utility, just search inside this thread, I wrote many posts about it, for example this one: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...n-3-dv8-hdx16-hdx18-intel-78.html#post5953540
If you need detailed steps, use the following procedure Get The On-Screen Display Back For Volume-Bass/Treble - Guides and Advice - HPHDX.net
In particular, use SmartMenu v2.10a (sp42238) and latest QuickLaunch (sp48159), in that procedure there's the link to an old QuickLaunch.
Make sure to use the latest bios too.
Justin: we need a FAQ section in the first post of the thread, with pointers to significant posts, new users are not encouraged to search inside a 1000 posts thread...
-
Unpack the CAB with winrar, then use the driver update wizard from Device Manager.
-
YUP, she installs fine.
No problems installing it at all. -
Thanks Axel.... I could find no help from anybody.. after exhaustive hours online with dumb dumb tech support guys and even paying "they later refunded" I figured out my solution out all by myself.. but my volume still does not have the OSD working.. but the volume itself does.....
I have done a system restore point and I"m going to try your solution... looks like you went back even farthur than I did for the smartmedia version..... funny how they just lost that?.... while updating, they downdated too!
You made an excellent guide... either it will work or it won't.. Ill let you know.. -
Thanks Axel.
-
Here are the problems I had.... I had HP tone control installed and that ran at the same time causing double OSD's when messing with the bass/treble.
Also if I moved the volume slider in the lower right tray, it locked up the whole system.. "really bad".
I finally had to uninstall everything "including HP Tone control and start over fresh and it worked properly....
Here are the changes I had to make for it to work for me on my DV8T cto 1100 in red:
All said and done, what I accomplished was that I now have volume OSD and Volume Bass Treble shows on each slider and of course on the affected slider moves.
Better than before, so I'll leave it that way..... the HP Tone control I had installed was for another computer anyway.
Now when I use the slider, OSD moves and the slider in the lower right tray follows suit... all seems to be sync'd like it should be.
For the first time, my sliders work after doing my fresh Win 7 install.... Thanks Axel!
I posted my sequences of events on your page.
Its almost comical we have gone this many updates since HP MEDIA SMART MENU Version 2.10 and they still haven't fixed the obvious... its a shame to HP that we have to go backwards that far to get our capacitance sliders to work. -
The link doesn't seem to be currently working.
@Axel: I'll take a look at the IDT audio driver and it should be up on the first post shortly. A FAQ section would be appropriate now -- could you find posts in this thread that you think are worth mentioning so I could add them in?
Thanks!
Edit: I'm looking at the IDT audio driver now and the packages look huge when in actuality they are much smaller than advertised
-- the Catalog says 355.6 MB for x86 (32-bit) and 660.6 MB for x64 (64-bit)
-
Don't know whats up with the link.. when I clicked on your quote of the link it even worked for me.. maybe a signon thing.... Axel's original link he posted is the same link.
-
The size of the packages on MS Catalog is wrong, when you download the file, the real size is approximately 4.5MB. BTW: the link is working fine now.
Regarding the FAQ, the first recurring thing that comes up to my mind now is the volume/bass/treble sliders that don't work.
But probably we should also explain how to install drivers packaged via cab archives, and also how to access the device id info via device manager in order to troubleshoot issues.
I don't have much time now, but when I do, I'll work on it...
-
Thanks Axel, I look forward to seeing your FAQ compilation.

- Updated IDT High Definition Audio Codec driver to version 6.10.6276.0.
There are a lot of updates that need to be posted and I'll try to get them up as soon as I can. This includes a new Synaptics TouchPad driver and a new Atheros wireless LAN driver.
-
Hello everybody...
The HP Tone Control Utility which controls the Bass and Treble slider is messed up in HP website, I found somewhere on the internet a perfect version that works fine, how can I help in listing the update in the first page? thx -
just post the link here and it will be automatically updated by the threadstarter "justinkw1"
-
anyone here tried the 197.45 WHQL for the GT320M?
I would like to know their experiences in performance and stability.
Thank you -
I remember seeing a link to this version being posted in the HP forums.
-
Hi again, I uploaded the "proper" HP Tone Control Utility to this link:
RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting
Please proceed to list it on the first page. thanks.
NOTE: the file can be downloaded ONLY 10 times. -
then i suggest it should be mirrored. i'll try to download the file and mirror it in mediafire, then post the link.
-
This is the mirror file of HP Tone Control Utility
HPToneControlUtility.zip -
I updated mine and the IDT, got a lot of BSOD, so i uninstalled both. Not sure which one was responsible for that.
-
You can use the tone control utility if you want...
If you look at post # 1033, Axel posted links to an older file that gives proper functional use the volume and tone/bass sliders.... I know for a fact that the HP tone control utility clashes with that.... so don't try to install both.
Axel's solution has proven to be a perfect fix for me on my DV8T. -
