This package is not compatible with these notebooks. Business models are only supported in this package. -
Thanks a lot for this thread, it's been really helpful. I have a few questions though:
1. Is there a significant speed increase from doing a clean install as opposed to just uninstalling bloatware from getting the computer from factory settings? I'm also wondering besides software what I may lose, like the preset "HP Recommended" power setting. Don't know if it's necessary or not.
2. I'm using a dv6-2000 Quad Edition, and I've noticed that the factory drivers for the GT 230M have always run cooler than the updated ones. Computer seems to heat up a lot quicker with the newer drivers. Anyone know what's up with that?
3. Lastly, why doesn't HP have all the latest drivers on their site? I find it incredible that a community forum is able to provide better up to date support than HP is...is HP just slow, or lazy? I only ask this because I'm wondering if maybe the latest drivers on the HP support site might be more compatible to my specific notebook, or is that incorrect?
Thanks very much for any help. -

I can try to answer questions (1) and (3) for you:
1. I personally would recommend that you perform a clean installation of Windows. It's a way to start completely fresh. Even though uninstalling the bloatware from the system's factory image is an option, you will never be able to remove everything as remnants can inadvertently remain (like files and/or registry entries) that may reduce your system's performance. Software that is able to define custom settings can always be re-installed if you prefer them, either from the SWSetup folder or by downloading the appropriate software from this thread. In your example, the "HP Recommended" power scheme will be restored if you install the HP Power Manager utility.
Also, you can backup the existing Windows 7 license present in the factory image and restore it once the clean installation is completed. Visit this thread for more information.
3. Although it may be true that the drivers on the HP support page are certified to work with the specified models, there are always going to be newer drivers out there (either from HP or through the component manufacturer) that provide the same if not more compatible functionality - even when not explicitly documented. It generally takes HP longer to certify drivers for some reason...I don't think their process is really that efficient to be honest. In addition, HP is no longer updating the drivers for these notebook models because they are now deemed end-of-life / discontinued; in essence, they have stopped supporting these notebooks for the most part. I know a lot of users who still have these notebooks though, and I believe that these users can continue to gain additional value out of these notebooks as long as they keep their drivers up-to-date (whether those current drivers are provided through HP, a component manufacturer, or Windows Update). -
A couple more updates.

Thanks so much for answering my questions, that makes a lot of sense to me. You've really helped me out and I'm sure many others by maintaining this thread.
I have another question that I hope you can answer: My notebook has a first gen i7, and I know it supports Turbo Boost but the drivers you have listed only support the i5 processor? What do I do to install it for my i7 then? -
Right - the standalone Intel Turbo Boost Technology driver is only compatible with the first generation Core i5 processors. I used to have a dv6t-2000 Quad Edition (Core i7), and it would refuse to install the TBT driver. I don't think there was ever a reason determined, but the feature seemed to work automatically without the use of a driver.

None of them work on HP dv6-2160ep
-
If you had already applied a previous version of the Intel Chipset Device Software, there's a chance that nothing was updated if you tried one of the newer packages. This is because the specific driver components within these new packages are the same as those in the older package (and what's already installed on your system).

As the title of this post says, finally I found out a consistent procedure to make my HDX18 fingerprint reader (Validity VFS201) work both at the OS/driver level (Win7 and Win8) and at the application level (works in web browsers too).
It was a long time that I was working on it because the current published drivers and relevant software combination didn't work consistently; I found out the problem when I reinstalled Win7 due to the switch to my new OCZ Vertex 4 SSD drive. When I reinstalled, the drivers and software published right now didn't work on the fresh OS installation. I made it work in some way by using all the old driver versions and DigitalPersona older sw releases but it was a mess, every once in a while fingerprints were not recognised, the device didn't work after hybernation and Biometric Devices (control panel) didn't recognise the device.
So last night I migrated my HDX18 Win7 Ultimate to Win8 x64 (Pro version + MediaCenter) and I faced the same issue...fingerprint didn't work with the current published drivers+Digitalpersona sw combo, so I got mad and I decided to solve the problem at any cost.
To make the long story short: I solved the issue and finally came out with a consistent and tested procedure that works in all Win7/Win8 (x86+x64) HP notebook environments and I thought to share it in this community first because it helps me solve issues on my HP notebooks quicker than HP support very often, particularly regarding drivers...
Here's the drivers and software you need to download:
- Digital Persona Fingerprint Management Application (FMA) with Validity WBF v4.3.34.0 by Validity [sensors supported: VFS201, VFS300 family, VFS5011, VFS5111, VFS5131]
- Only in the case you have an HP notebook with VFS451 or VFS471 sensor, you need to download the specific version for them: v4.3.100.0
- Only in the case you have an HP notebook with VFS451 or VFS471 sensor, you need to download the specific version for them: v4.3.100.0
- HP SimplePass v6.0.100.252 by AuthenTec [supports Win7/Win8 in both x86/x64 flavors]
- First of all, if you're not installing on a fresh-copy of Windows, make sure to uninstall any previous Validity fingerprint driver (use device manager to uninstall it), older software app (DigitalPersona, SimplePass etc.) and Validity DDK/WBF packages (use control panel's Programs and Features panel to uninstall these). Then reboot. After reboot, make sure that you have an unidentified device (Validity fingerprint reader), that means that Windows doesn't have a proper driver for it. Also, make sure that in the uninstallation list of Windows there's no trace of the apps uninstalled and Validity DDK/WBF older versions.
- Unpack item 1 above: you will find a setup executable file and 3 subdirectories: before executing the setup file WBF_DP_FMA_Setup.exe, rename/delete the subdirectory named DPPersonal_FMA. This is because the setup will first install the necessary WBF drivers (required for Biometric Windows APIs to communicate with the fingerprint reader) and then the DigitalPersona FMA (Fingerprint Management Application). DigitalPersona FMA only allows to manage fingerpint enrollment, it doesn't manage web or application passwords. Since we have a more complete software available for free (see point 2 above, HP SimplePass) we don't want the installer to execute the second step of the process. After you execute the setup you will notice that it will work on the driver installation and then it will try to execute the DigitalPersona setup but since the directory isn't there anymore it will fail with a file/dir not found error; don't worry this exactly what we wanted, the installation of the WBF drivers and nothing else.
- Check in Control Panel that you now have a Biometric Devices entry, click on it, and (if everything worked fine) it should list your fingerprint device. There is a Properties link under the name of the device: click on it and you will have access to the device properties (you can do this through Device Manager too, it's just a shortcut), check that it is working fine and that the driver version installed is 4.3.34.0. If everything's ok, it means that the hardware, driver and the Windows Biometric services are communicating well. So we can go on to install the software application.
- Unpack item 2 above: you fill find one executable file, run it and it will install the latest (v6.x) HP SimplePass software (free version) developed by AuthenTec for HP that will work both on Win7 and Win8. It's a full-featured fingeprint reader management application, it allows you to enroll fingerprints, enable Windows logon biometric authentication, allows you to manage website passwords, quicklaunch functionality, etc. Now play with the app, enable windows logon authentication, enroll your fingerprints and enable all the other modules you want. If you need a User Guide, you can download it here, it's actually for an older version of the software (v5.4), but it gives you an idea.
- Validity website news article (January 5, 2011)
- AuthenTec Support Site page for HP SimplePass
- My brain: luckily for you it's not readable...

Hope to be of any help to the HP users community, we're all in the same boat mates...
Alessandro (aka Axel) - Digital Persona Fingerprint Management Application (FMA) with Validity WBF v4.3.34.0 by Validity [sensors supported: VFS201, VFS300 family, VFS5011, VFS5111, VFS5131]

MicGoogle, glad that procedure was useful for you, but I have the following things to tell you:
1. you didn't copy my post but you changed/integrated it, and you put reference to my post only at the very end of the page (instead of putting it at the very beginning), without specifying that you also changed it without testing it.
2. the HP drivers you posted don't work on neither of my 2 HP notebooks (HDX18 and a dv6). Before posting a procedure, be sure to test it. Those drivers are specifically built for a specific notebook version unfortunately. I tried updating my version manually using the manual .inf installation but the drivers are not digitally signed, so they won't update. In any case, that HP package is specific for HP Pavilion m6 notebook (check here http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp56501-57000/sp56957.html).
So please:
1. Put reference to the original post in this forum at the beginning of your blog's article, clearly stating that the steps you describe are different respect to my post.
2. If you acknowledge that your procedure doesn't work, instead of copying and pasting exactly the contents of my article, put only a reference to the original post on this board and let people read it here, who knows, probably they would register and participate to this forum like I did years ago when I discovered this board googling for a driver problem I had.
I'm sure you'll understand, thank you.

Hey there, I initially had a cite back but when i changed the steps i had taken out the cited link and just inserted at bottom. I've inserted it back and mentioned as you've said. I'm sorry about the lack of due credit, I hope I've done justice by readding it back.
The latest driver has been confirmed working. The way I did that as you said manual updating through Device Manager -> Right click -> Update Driver Software -> Browse my computer for driver software -> Next input the folder to your sensor, so if you have VFS301 you can find your driver file in the extrated setup folder as below:
C:\SwSetup\sp56957\Drivers\WBF_301_DRV
Check the tickbox "Include Subfolders" and hit next, that ought to update your driver to the latest HP version. The driver has been working on Windows 7 x64, HP dv6-3000, VFS301 sensor
Once again if you go to C:\SwSetup\sp56957\Drivers\ or whereever you've extrated your sp56957 update you can find your supported sensor folder. If it doesn't work validity one is just as good i guess. -

I am new to the forum and I want to start off by saying thanks for keeping up-to-date on the drivers and placing them in one location. I have a HP HDX16 and the drivers on HP's website appear to be out of date. I am planning on doing a clean install of Windows 8 after New Years and I have a few questions since computers are not my expertise. I am currently running Window 7 (64 bit) and did a clean install when it first came out but it was quite confusing with the lack of driver support and HP pushing for you to do their "upgrade" from Vista.
Do I need to manually install all of the drivers listed on the first page or will the Windows Update do it all? I know I will have to install somethings like the fingerprint reader myself but I am asking about the main drivers (Intel, Nvidia, Synaptics, etc...) Basically I didn't know if Windows Update just installed a generic driver and whether or not I need to go back and reinstall the ones listed.
I appreciate all your time and help by providing such informative computer knowledge to the forum. If you have any other tips for doing my clean install please let me know. I'm all ears. -
Hey
Installed Win8 Pro into my dv6-2180ey . Everything is installed and works exept one unknown device: A309
I guess its the avermedia tv tuner? Drivers in first page doesnt do anything
Is there something for win8 available? -

First of all, welcome!
You can use Windows Update to install some of the device drivers, but they may not be as new as the ones that are currently listed on the first post.
You also do not need to install all of the drivers on the first post; in fact, you should not be installing everything as some of them will not be compatible with your notebook (check the Important Information sections on the first post). You can give the essential drivers a try (Intel Chipset, Intel RST, NVIDIA, Synaptics, IDT Audio, HP 3D DriveGuard), as they are currently the newest releases known to be compatible based on their INF entries. -
Yes, this is the integrated AVerMedia DVB-T TV tuner (equipped in a few models). I'm not aware of a Windows 8 device driver for this, unfortunately.
-
Thanks for the information! I understand that some of the drivers are not compatible with my machine. So do I just need to let the Windows Update run at first and then go back and manually install all the compatible drivers for my machine? When I did my clean install of Windows 7 it appeared the main drivers worked without any problem after doing the Windows Update but I still went back and installed the ones listed on the HP page. I wasnt sure if that was necessary or not.
-
You can install the drivers on the first post without going to Windows Update.
I recommend that you manually install the appropriate drivers on the first post, then initiate Windows Update. If there are any devices that still need to be updated after you install the ones on the first post, Windows Update will find them for you.
