I was looking at the x6000 notebooks and saw that they had the 630,640,and 650 CPU's now. Other then the 2MB L2 cache is there any other differences compared to the 5xx series?

Ack, is the 600 series really a 64bit processor? It says they run cooler and have twice the cache. Hmm, maybe I should have waited a month to order mine.

Hmm, I don't know but don't we have 30 days grace period where we can ship them back. If it makes that much of a performance increase I'd be tempted.

I was more thinking for anyone who might want to. I will never go for the latest and greatest. This notebook is awesome the way it is, in the 64 market, I would much rather have the AMD for the hypertransport technology. I will wait and get a new one in a couple of years.

NO WAY WOULD I SEND IT BACK!!!
I outlined a comparable system to the X600 500 series. For my notebook it would cost almost $2,200 without tax. Thats rediculous. I am glad I got my $1,700 one.

The X6000 went through this about 2 months ago. They were running low on parts for the laptop and they had a limited selection on the customize page. It took them about a month before they got their supplies back up. As soon as they had the options back I ordered mine before it happened again and I am glad I did. The X6000 seems to be popular due to the bang for the buck. I highly recommend to those interested to wait until the supplies come back and then order as soon as you can. If you wait too long the supplies will dwindle and you will be forced to wait another 2 months or so.
Good luck all.

greetings everyone. first off thanks to everyone for contributing in this thread. I have been following it for over 2 weeks now, and pretty much after i read through it the first time i ordered my x6000. Before i list the specs i've got a question. Pretty much like everyone here i'm buying this laptop last me for quite a while. So i was wondering whether the 600 series intel processorts (the ones with 64 bit support) will they be able to run Longhorn? And if they do would my system run it well?
here are my specs
pentium 4 540 (3.2)
2 gigs of ram (i already received it)
60gig 7200rpm hd
256mb x600
Dvd burner + wireless w/o bluetooth
thanks -

Hey everyone, I am new here, figured I had to join because like the rest of you I ordered a beautiful X6000
I do have a few questions though
1.I stuck with the 3.2, is the 3.6 really worth the extra $300?
2. Has there been any reports of them shipping early? Mine is not supposed to ship untill the 22nd of march
3. Anyone tried to game with theirs?
4. How long is the battery life?
Oh, and my specs
3.2 W/ Hyperthreading
60 GB hd 4200 rpm (conserves battery life)
17'' WXGA Brightview widescreen
x600 256mb pci express (THIS is what sold me)
dvd burner/writer w/ dual layer support
and I got the extra 12 cell -

I have been doing some online gaming with mine. It plays great with the wireless. As of now I've played Everquest II, Planetside, Star Wars Galaxies, Star Wars KOTOR, and HalfLife 2. They all play great I think. It will not be as good as a desktop system, but I think that it is a VERY close second.

I have built PC's for almost 10 years now. I have always heard the question should I upgrade. Upgrade really depends on useage.
To answer the CPU question though, this is the way I see it...
$300 is alot of money for something you might use in a year or two from now. You have to consider the big picture. There will be some people that will tell you to get it because it will perform a little faster, but more so then naught they are fooling themselves because unless an app is 64bit they aren't really getting much of anything.
The way I see it is it will take about 2 years to make the 64bit world come alive, with full app support for 64 bit processing. By that time there will be much better 64 bit processors and because of how IT works they will be around the same price unless the economy drastically changes, which it could happen in two years.
I would get the P4/ht for now 5 series, and when the 64bit market shows up mainstream you will be in a position to buy better hardware to facilitate it. Let them work out the bugs and kinks so you can get a much better machine. The key is to get the most out of your investment. I was always taught let money work for you, don't work for your money. If the price difference was like $50 I would probably go with it, Also Microsoft officially said they can't code longhorn for two technologies, and chose AMD (not a big surprise) sense the AMD technology hypertransport affects the ability of the PC to perform instead of the processor. If you really want 64 get a AMD 64.
I hope that helps out.

wait...so there will not be a Windows Longhorn for any Intel based system?!? That seems like an incredibly stupid move on Microsoft's part, and if I was AMD, I would be jumping for joy...

thanks a lot josephcruz, i guess what you say makes sense. my order was put in the 21st of feb and so far the wait has been painful enough. given that most of the features i bought this laptop for are no longer availible, i'll just stick with my current order. plus given that microsoft took of some of the features that'd make longhorn special out (winfs and such) and decided to make them accessible for other operating systems as well, i'll be just as happy with my xp system.
so far i have dreamt 2 or 3 times that my laptop arrived already. in one occasion i dreamt that it arrived with xp media center. and in the second one i dreamt that it arrived with the additional power supply. as you can see i've been quite into this thread.
5 more days till it ships...

If anyone is interested, I just ran 3dmark 05 on a brand new x6000:
3.19ghz
1 G ram
ATI x600 /256G
3DMARK Score= 1315
The test was run with all out of the box drivers and very little tweaking. I turned off a few services, and disabled a few startup programs. I will do some tweaking and rerun the benchmark. -
In between. 3dmark 05 is a very demanding 3d program. Most games out today dont come close to testing a graphics card as much as this does. There are much higher scores out there from desktops PC's but that is to be expected. A couple of years ago you could hardly find a laptop that could even run 3dmark.

Regarding this Longhorn. Someone mentioned let the kinks be worked out first. I agree. I'm just ready to get my feet into XP. I think this 64 bit won't be mainstream for many many year and there will have to be a long integration period. It's not nearly going to be a drop of a hat. Look how long it's taken High Def TV to integrate,, AND it's barely got it leg in the door. That tech was known in early 1980's man. I think this 64 bit will take like 10 yrs to be say 80% saturated in market. MY OPINION ONLY as a (computer idiot)

I love your imput on this thread.
My comment was aiming at saying what has already been said. By the time 64bit is main stream, your notebook will probably be good for word processing and surfing. It will be time to upgrade by then any way, even by my standard of getting a notebook to last me 5 years.
-
For all those interested I started a thread on 3Dmark05 scores so others could post their benchmark scores for comparison. Here is the link to the post.

I just got a soundblaster Audigy 2 zs for my Bday and I noticed in the manual that you can hook it up to receviers with mini optical plugs via some type of adapter that looks like a mini (1/8 inch) headphone plug to a mini optical SPDIF. I looked all over for this type of adapter but didnt find anything. I did find alot of TOSLINK to mini optical. Does anyone know if this is the adapter that will work?

just go to shopping.hp.com and sign in with your user name and password or they ask for something else if you are not registered (i guess that'd be the case if you ordered it on the phone)
i'm waiting for it to be shipped on the 14th too...and everyday i check it and i swear everytime i see the tracking provided upon shipment...
i guess if they don't ship it tomorrow then it'll ship on the 14th, if it ships late.. i'm gonna be mad.. real mad..

The order status thing only works once its shipped, the cool thing is that when it does ship order status gets it long before you get an email, so you can see its progress and atleast know its on its way.

XPS The Badest?
Not sure I agree with that.
First off it uses Pentium M, good for mobiles but no HT that I'm aware of. Also to go from a 2Ghz to a 2.13Ghz, its $300. TV Tuner is expensive and to get 2GB of ram is $750.
I put one together with the:
PM 2Ghz
2GB RAM
TV Tuner
17" WUXGA, Once again make sure your carefull about dell's "highend" screens
XP Home
60GB 7200 RPM
8X DVD Burner
Dell 1350 Wireless
It cost me $3,410 without tax and without warranty, that is rediculous for what it is, aside from the vid card, which I didn't list because there is only one. With warranty you will spend more than 4 G's for a notebook that will work slightly better that the x6000. Its not worth the money, I feel dirty just configuring it. [xx(]
