The only bad part about substitution is you have to cancel and reorder to do it, so your wait would begin again, a couple of guys on this thread tried to do directly substitute and HP said no dice.

I just looked at the HP site at the Z8000. They upped the price of Windows Media Center from 99 dollars to 199 dollars.

    X6000, 3.2 Ghz, 512meg ram, 256 ATI X600 video, 17" Brightview Screen, 60gig 7200rpm Hard Drive, 8X DVD Burner, 54g 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster

Upgrading from a Sager Celeron 500, 192meg ram, 6gig 4200 RPM Hard Drive, 8 meg ATI Rage LT Video Card, 15" Screen, 4X DVD player.

The question was what happened to the high end Dells, the XPS2 is the high end Dell. Along those lines, yes it is expensive and I've also heard and read about the high end screen. The PM is an awesome processor! The 6600gt with 256 megs of ram is better than the x600 with 256. Benchmark for benchmark...the dell with post higher than the X6000 probably by some 20%. It's badass! I am not going to take anything away from any laptop because I own the X6000. The XPS2 is not a 9200. People with that laptop love it...as we do this one. You don't have to agree with it. I like the XPS..gen 1 and 2. To me it's not worth the xtra 1000-1500 premium over the X6000. I also like the high end sager and the AW area 51 (even though support is awful for that machine) I don't know, I've always given credit where credit is due I guess.

    X6000 / P-4 3.2GHz (540) / 2gigs PC2 4200 (533MHz) DDR2 Ram / 7200RPM 60 gig HHD / 8x DVD Burner and the Brightview!

I'm not saying its not a good notebook, but who in their right mind would pay 200% of the price for a 20% increase, just doesn't seem like intelligence is used to buy that notebook.

Your right its not a I9200 but its still a 17" WUXGA, so are you saying they use a different screen for the XPS vs the 9200? Doesn't seem to make alot of sense to me, besides the screen i thought was a pos some people actually like, I just warned them about it, because I didn't have that opportunity until I bought the thing. Then I had to go through the return policy and wait, after that cleared is when I ordered the X6000, Dell isn't a bad company, but they had a huge flaw compared to other makers in the market and didn't address it, rather that has changed in 2 months I can't state, I hope it did though.

Whatever anyone does that replies to this, don't say because its the best gaming machine, because that will hold out for about three months if your lucky til they bring something else in the play. As I said before if you want to go for the latest and the greatest, you will be running with it forever.

I was actually going to buy a Dell before I found this thred when it was in it's infancy, had I think 2 pages when I started reading it. I would buy a Dell if it wasn't so much more money for the same machine basically. I do like the idea of the new graphics card but before I'd spend 1000 plus dollars more on that machine I'd build one hell of a Desktop machine for less and make it mobile by putting Giant Casters on it and drag it behind me. Do you know what kind of Desktop you can build for 3000 bucks, WHEW...

its sad for gamers though, the biggest problem with computers is throughput. No matter what they do to plug n play hardware unless the Bus issues are really addressed, you really don't get what you pay for in a $3000 notebook.

I wouldn't compare that to a car, beucase there are things like aerodynamics, weight issues, suspension, HP/Torque and design that make up high priced cars. But I understand what you mean.

I still would wait if you buy a Dell though, not because of screen or other design issues, but sometime after june a new line of AMD64 processors, using hypertransport technology are heading out, AMD has always been the gamers processor.

Well, my point is that Dell makes the best gaming laptop...and has for the last 6-8 months with the XPS1. As far as the money issue goes...money means something to me ....hence the X6000! Same can be said for a car. Why would you pay....100k on a car that is 20% faster than lets say a 35k car? The person with the 100k has the money to spend and he values the ultimate performance machine in everyway. The same can be said for a laptop. People who spend 3-4k on laptop are not the same people that spend 1-2k. To me...it a money thing, that's what guided me to the X6000. To the Dell XPS2 owners...that 20% is more than worth twice the price they would pay for this laptop, they also have the money! I will stand behind my quote that the Dell XPS2 is the best gaming laptop on the market. Something faster might come out...but for the last 6-8 months NOTHING has beaten the XPS...not AW 51, no Sager, no HP, no Toshiba...nothing on this market can and has touched Dells performance mark. That's not to say they will stay on top forever...but I am pretty sure the high end Dells will be right up thier with the best gaming LAPTOPS on the market. For what I paid for this laptop, I could have built a gamer that would blow this thing out of the water. I was in the market for a portable machine that would suit my needs...this was it. I won't even get into comparing this to a desktop...most any desktop with an ATI 9700pro (3 years old now) and a 533MHz bus with a couple of drives running in a raid 0 with a northwood P4 2.66 (3 years old now) will give better benchmarks than this machine. So with this laptop, your going to get the same performace a high end Desktop had 3 years ago. The Dells, AW, Sagers are bridging this gap...with a price of course.

    X6000 / P-4 3.2GHz (540) / 2gigs PC2 4200 (533MHz) DDR2 Ram / 7200RPM 60 gig HHD / 8x DVD Burner and the Brightview!

Does anyone know the response time of the LCD display (1680X1050) Brightview. I am curious. I know that will greatly affect FPS gaming and those games that have high response times.

The only thing I don't like about this notebook is no DVI connector, its just an annoyance but would be nice to have.

Yeah, HP is running out of everything. My story once again:
Ordered on 2/9, to be delivered 2/23. Delayed. To be delivered 3/4. Received $50 hpshopping.com coupon code. 3/4 comes around. Delayed again. To be delivered 3/16. Received e-mail stating that within 3 days I must respond that I still want my notebook to be delivered or HP must legally cancel my order. I also receive 10% discount off of my entire order, which is like $240. Cause of the problems: WSXGA+ Screen and 100GB 5400rpm HD.

    Still waiting:
    - Intel(R) Pentium(R)4 560 w/HT Technology, 3.6GHz
    - 17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Wide Viewing (1680x1050)
    - 2.0GB DDR2 SDRAM, 400MHz (2x1024MB)
    - 100 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
    - DVD+/-RW/R & CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer Support
    - 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) X600
    - 54g(TM) Integ. Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN & Bluetooth

Heat issues some of you have had your laptops for awhile I was just wondering if any of you decided to go without the laptop cooler devices. And if you had any problems because of this decision.

I switched from dell's p4 machine which they offered awhile back to the x6000 because of this thread and also because i saw people ripping on the dell p4 for bad fan position, dirt getting into the laptop, and overheating.

    $1480
    - Pentium(R) 4 520 w/HT Technology, 2.8GHz
    - 17.0" WXGA+ Wide Viewing (with brightview)(1440x900)
    - 1.0GB DDR2 SDRAM, 400MHz (2x512MB)
    - 60 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive

I did purchase the laptop cooler from newegg.com. It and the
X6000 seem to be working fine, If I had it to do again I'd check
on the slightly higher priced cooler with 4 USB ports provided they are powered (A/C). The $30 cooler I bought draws it's power from USB not external so I have the cooler plugged into a powered 4 Port USB hub that is connected to the X6000.

The only company that makes a 7200rpm laptop HHD is Hitachi. This HDD is better known as the 7K60, it also comes in a 40 gig HDD. These are truly the best laptop HDD in the industry right now. 30% faster than a 60Gig 4200rpm drive and 15% faster than a 5400rpm drive. This is truly the best upgrade you can make. Imagine going 30% faster with the same setup because of your HHD.

    X6000 / P-4 3.2GHz (540) / 2gigs PC2 4200 (533MHz) DDR2 Ram / 7200RPM 60 gig HHD / 8x DVD Burner and the Brightview!
    [/quote]

That also means your batterylife gets destroyed in the process... I went with the 4200 because sure it is a slowdown, but its not a massive one... DEFINITLY not 30%...

The 7k60 seems to be a good buy, luckily I got that drive stock, any ideas, now that HP has the 533mhz ram, I was thinking of buying it though them, since I have the 2year accidental warranty?

    Any opinions on this?

For the one who thought a slower HD uses less power, thats a big misconception, often times in the world of IT older devices do less with more power because the technology is less advance, RPM only means rotations per minute, it doesn't mean the hardware inside uses less power to perform its tasks.

Seems the 7K60 uses less power than some of the other slower notebook Hard drives...and still blows them away!

Most people buy this notebook as a desktop replacement and as such understand that the battery life will be low. Its a sacrifice you have to make to get a better performing notebook. Most of the time mine is at home and I can plug it in need be, but with it off the AC i get 1hr 30mins, and that is with a USB Mouse and USB cooler plugged in, so I really can't complain.

I've done this swap first hand on two systems, this one and my ze4315us. I've witnessed the difference...my ze4315us booted up twice as fast with the 7k60, the applications loaded so much quicker. Everything I've done was MUCH faster. A 4200rpm drive simply cannot hold a candle to the 7k60, seen it first hand! 30% is more than realistic...the 7K60 spins 40% faster! When configuring a notebook yourself, this is the one option you should get. If you need more space than 60Gigs, than you should opt for a 5400rpm drive. The 4200rpm drives simply causes a HUGE bottleneck in the system. The 7200rpm drive is perfect for me, I guess I use my system for games and video editing, this is where my HHD helps me. But if your just gonna e-mail and do word docs, a 4200rpm drive is perfect! I think the X6000 is overkill for those tasks.

    X6000 / P-4 3.2GHz (540) / 2gigs PC2 4200 (533MHz) DDR2 Ram / 7200RPM 60 gig HHD / 8x DVD Burner and the Brightview!

ok just for the unlikely case of me getting this laptop and returning it, with what other laptops can i use the 200 sodimm ram i've gotten for x6000? I don't think i'll be able to afford anything at the x6000 level, and i'm pretty sure i'd be happy when i receive it, but i just wanted to ask since i won't be able to return the ram i've gotten for it.

I got one of the HP backpacks that they sell as accessories. It fits in the pocket designed to hold the laptop, but it is a tight fit, so I just use the pocket in from of that, and it fits great. I actually really like it.

I also got a vantec laptop cooler with the 4 USB ports for this. I noticed it did very little. I bought a cheaper 4 fan cooler pad for my girlfriend's laptop, and it works a whole lot better, plus it is solid on the bottom so you can put it on your lap or bed and not block any fans. It is an Evercool Notebook Cooling Pad that I got for $16.99. My temp stays between 46 and 50 C with this thing on low. It gets over 60C without the cooler. Needless to say the Vantc is not being used and I ordered another Evercool. I think the difference is that the Evercool sucks the air from under the laptop, and the Vantec blows.. Not exactly sure why it works better, but it does. I ordered the Evercools from Xoxide.com if anybody wants to know. I had never shopped with them before, and they surprised me with quick shipping.

I am over all happy with my x6000 the cooler makes the spot to the right of the mouse pad cooler also. It is still warm, but nowhere near as hot as it did without the cooler.

    Hello everyone,

I am new here, but I have been following this thread since 2/21. First and foremost thanks for everyone especially Tacjam and JosephCruz for your inputs. They have made ordering the X6000 a lot easier [ :)] To Tacjam take care in Iraq and thank you along with others with you for all the sacrifice you do for all of us.

I just wanted to reply to the notecase topic as I have ordered the following bag:
    http://www.ebags.com/high_sierra/a_t_gear_access_computer_case/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=15704

I don't have a cooler but have found a way to just prop the laptop in a 45 angle to optimize the dissipation of the heat directly to the air. If anyone is interested, please and I will share otherwise you might think me crazy for what I came up with...[ :D] Anyways I was compeled to add something to this thread because I get so much from it everyday especially now that I am still waiting for mine. Ordered 2/21 "supposed" to ship 3/14... it better or else!!![} :)]

    Anxiously awaiting:
    x6000 3.2 P4/HT
    XP-Pro
    1 gig DDR2 SDRAM (2x512)
    17" WSXGA
    x600-256
    60 gig 7200 RPM
    DVD/CD combo w/ DL
    802.11b/g w/ bluetooth

Ok but don't take my word for it just go to your local staples or office depot and look for yourself. Now you have to use your imagination for a bit here...the problem for me was that this notebook gets hot and the best cooling solution in my opinion even without using fans is to just prop the whole laptop so that it actually acts like a normal screen. When you prop it up the 3 fans in the back are free to dissipate the heat into the air without the need of a laptop stand. So what the solution? Prop it up with a cheap portable easel. This one from staples is only around $15 BUT you have to mod it a little...
    http://www.staples.com/Catalog/Browse/Sku.asp?PageType=1&Sku=354011

What you have to do is bend the back rod so that the whole tripod will recline back a little and expand the base and cradle your notebook with the two foldable plastic clips in the front. You have to put something soft on the clips to prevent scratching of the paint, but otherwise it works!!! I have tried on an old laptop and even tried to put it on my bed and purposely tried to tip it over and didn't! If won't tip there then it will surely be stable on a table.
At this optimum angle you have the screen propped higher and the heat is dissipated for better cooling!! Kills two birds with one stone!
And the stand is portable fits in any computer case! Again see for yourself decide if you think my solution will work for you [ :D]
