Thats very creative, if there is a way for you to post pictures of how it looks mounted please do, I have a notebook desk, and going off of your theory if I cut a hole in the center where the fans are, they should be able to breathe easier and thus cool the notebook quicker right? The notebook desk I have does angles so I could get it to the relative position of that stand.

JosephCruz, I will try my best to see if I can take pics of it. However, as I said before, I don't have my lappy yet and have only tried this on an older and smaller (<15") Toshiba lappy and it works fine. Now I imagine the X6000 will be wider and longer than the Toshiba, but the same principle should still work. Bottom line is if you just prop, by any means necessary, the back of the X6000 so that the fans are not blocked then it should cool it "better" than the normal position. In my opinion the notebook coolers whether they're metal or not don't cool from direct contact, but by "enhancing" the dissipation of heat from the laptops own fans. Simply putting coasters under it would do the job, but the tripod easel solution in my opinion is the best and cheapest solution [] because it props the whole screen in a better position for optimal viewing and better cooling! I think Targus makes such a beast. Do a google search on Targus traveler coolpad. It raises the back of the notebook up so the fans have room to circulate the air. Making one yourself? That's a great idea.

ive been playing with this laptop etc for about a week now. i keep it on a flat wooden table to play cs etc and i never have it heat up enough to want to buy a cooler. i suppose that everyone wants all kinds of crazy stuff for the laptop but i dont think its really necessary, but for those of you who like to spend money go for it. the laptop is beautiful, and is fast despite all the stupid crap compaq installs on the laptop to start with.

The $100 offer expired 3/12. When I went to order mine, the only graphic card option was the x300 so I went with my second choice, a Dell 9300. I really liked the light scribe option but only 64mb on an x300 just didn't cut it.

along the lines of coolers, I agree with keeping the laptop as cool as possible, has anyone with a cooler and temp moniter actually compared the difference? My laptop stays between 47 and 58 degrees C. without a cooler. Can anyone with a cooler confirm that your laptop stays in the 40's? Right now my laptop has been on for 8 hours, my fans just kicked on and it's 48 degrees C righ now. Note that the highest I've seen it is 58 after playing Call of Duty for two hours. In comparison my desktop (prescott as well) after playing for hours is at about 47 (Two front 80mm fans, two rear 80mm fans, aftermarket 80mm cpu fan, and the stock ATI fan on my 9800XT) I would think you would need a cooler that would line up with the stock fans so air can always circulate through the laptop. I'm thinking blowing the low amount of air a laptop cooler produces on the bottom of the plastic really won't reduce temps that much? Lifting the unit up like Aragorn suggested might have the same effect no? By no means am I against cooling, I think I might go the Aragorn route and build my own cooler, placing three 80MM fans right below the stock fans to keep air flowing. Any thoughts?

hp seems to have pretty much killed the appeal of x6000. No 60gb 7200rpm drive, no 256 x600 and the price difference isn't there anymore. zd8000 is now at the same price as x6000 with the exact same features. Actually after rebates x6000 is now 1 dollar more expensive.

actually to correct you on that Tacjam you can get the 2 gig 533 ram for $400 at memmory4less.com . so at the end it's actually about $100 cheaper.
I guess the only reason they would buy it is because
1) they are unaware of the real deal out there.
2) time is of a greater concern or something. you have the chance to walk into a circuitcity and pick up the 8080. Whereas we need to wait around 3 weeks to get it.
-
I don't know if they raised the price soley on popularity or if they wanted to wheel customers in on the x6000 then raise the price once the word is out.
The notebook is still at a good price, HD and memory can easily be upgraded later, the big thing is the vid card. Until they add a much better one (256) I can't really recommend this as a desktop replacement, because I am looking at the long term investement. []

I think a laptop cooler is a good idea. My X6000 does get warm but normally runs aroun 46 to 55 degrees depending on what I'm doing. Once it gets too hot of course all the fans kick on and it cools right down to 46 degrees.
If you buy a cooler tho, this should keep the laptop fans from cycling on and off more. This then should increase the life of the laptop fans as everyone knows fans eventually go bad. Replacing the fans in the laptop has to be more expensive than buying even a 30 to 40 dollar cooler. I personally feel I could replace these fans on my own but I'm sure there are several out there that would want a service tech to replace them.

Actually the i9300 and x6000 where at the same price points. Dell has/had promo codes going which brought a $2200 configured system down to approx $1500. If it where not for the promo codes, I would not have ordred it.
-
Sorry Tac, don't have a cooler yet. I am sitting here at work ripping a DVD and the temp is running from 46 to 53 degrees and the fan then kicks on and back to 46. The hard drive temp is hoving at about 40 degrees. I have to wait to buy a cooler till I save up a few bucks.

Recommended and the only one that works are two different things. If you have to get memory at $350 a stick buy it off HP, its $450 for 2GB's 533mhz memory.
Don't let them tell you what works, do the research and tell them what you want, that is a big problem I dealt with helping people build home computers. Tacjam placed a link to the memory bought for that x6000 if it specs the same then it should work. If not just pay a bit more and buy the one tacjam bought.

on the topic of notebook coolers...I dont know how useful they really are. It is true that the less heat Solid State electronics see, the better, but from what I have been hearing from most of you who have the temp reading software, adding the coolers doesnt make that much of a difference and the internal fans themselves contribute to most of the cooling. Never-the-less I am an engineer/nerd and I always seek to find or create the best device possible. So after a long search for the ultimate cooler for this notebook, I didnt find much. In fact, most of the coolers pretty much suck due to the fact that:
1) the notebook fans are not aligned with the cooler fans which basically means air is blowing on the plastic (insulator) bottom of the case, doing absolutely nothing in terms of cooling. Sitting your x6000 on the nb cooler may also inhibit the flow of air getting to your fans and cause an increase in temp!
2)most of the marginally good coolers have large gaps or perforations on the base which serves as exhaust or intake (depending on if the cooler pushes or pulls air) for the fans. One of the first things I noticed about my old zd7000 was when I put it on my lap, I covered up the fans and in ten minutes, it was unconfortably hot. I want a cooler that will not be inhibited if I place it on my lap or any other soft surface. None of the laptop coolers I found exhuast air through the sides.
So when I couldnt find what I want premade I decided to design one myself which would have all of the features I want. Keep in mind this is only a design and I have not yet made anything.
the first and most important aspect of this cooler would be its fans. After looking into passive radiative cooling, I decided fans would be easier and not so overkill (as if designing a laptop cooler isnt already[]). I found some fans which were exactly what I wanted which was a thin radial blower which exhausted air laterally, like a leaf blower. here is a link to one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3673&item=6751654446&rd=1
These things are a dime a dozen on ebay right now. Basically I am going make a aluminum plate with a matching fan pattern, attach the blowers to the plate and then create a nice plastic base for all of it to sit on. I think this will serve me best because I can comfortably place the notebook on my lap or bed without worrying about impeding the operation of the fans. I will also make it the correct size for my x6000.
I will be drawing this up in solidworks and I will make sure to post the drawing when I finish if anyone wants the plans.

So, I had my laptop for about a week. Set up all my programs, moved my life over into it. I set it up last night for its DVD debut and before I even started the movie, the HD started scratching and clacking. Immediate hard drive failure! I wasn't too bummed until I realized that I lost about 150 photos I took from an event this past weekend and some work related documents that will take a week or more to recreate (graphics files).
After a couple unsuccessful boot attempts, I removed the clanking drive and placed it in my desktop in hopes to retrieve whatever I could. The bios recogizes it but it keeps clanking and was unaccessible under WinXP. I tried that a few times and finally the drive just went kaput. It doesn't even spin up now. Completely motionless and silent. [xx(] RIP!
So I called HP technical support which I assume judging by the accent is located outside the U.S, unlike their sales department. Bali, my support representative wanted to go through the regular support steps to diagnose the drive. I refused, knowing there was not a shred of hope for this drive. So they're overnighting me another HD to install myself on the condition I sent the old one back. It won't ship for a few days but hopefully it will ship this week and not be delayed like my X6000 order.
I waited a month to get this laptop. I must have received the lemon of the batch. No only did I get a bad drive, I also have 3 bad pixels. I currently have too many deadlines to send back the whole laptop for service, but I would like to. I fear the visible problems with this laptop might indicate it was rough-housed somewhat on its trip to the US. Who knows what else might be waiting to break in this thing.
I haven't seen anyone else post any hardware issues, so I still somewhat trusting of HP/Compaq. But I definitely have a bitter taste in my mouth. Right now I have an old 20GB 4200RPM Fujitsu that I transplanted into it from my old Toshiba. But it is definitely a handicap, and I don't want to spend all my time setting up this drive only to replace it with the new one they are sending.
I hope no one else has to go through something like this. Definitely a P.I.T.A!

Hey I posted here a few days ago about my laptop cooler findings. Like I said I tried the Vantec lap2cool (which I think is crap) and I also tried the Evercool Notebook Cooling Pad that I paid $16.99 for. It has NO fans on the bottom, and sucks air from under the laptop and blows it out the sides. It dropped my temps by around 10 degrees. The laptop fans still come on, but probably about 1/2 as often. The temp was 43C when I started this post and are now 44C it will get up to about 49 or 50C before the fans kick on, but that should take about 6 or 7 minutes.
I considered building one myself, but for under $20 I wouldn't even bother. The Evercool doesn't look like much and seems a bit flimsy, but it works, and it was cheap.
I got mine at http://xoxide.com/evnopad.html looks like they raised the price to $18.99, but still worth it in my book.

Also, My brother just got a new computer with a Pentium 4 640 3.2GHz which is the same speed as my 540... While he is out of town next weekend I am going to put his processor in my x6000 and see what it does. I am mostly interested in the heat issue.
I read reviews on the new 6xx P4 processors, and other than the 64 bit stuff (big deal) they bench about the same as the 5xx siblings. The biggest difference is about 10C less heat... I hate how hot my laptop gets (even with the cooler.)
I will post all my results here which will include before and after heat readings (with and without the cooler) and before and after benchmarks.
I have already had my x6000 apart down to the processor (not the easiest thing to do, but I do this kind of thing for a living) I put some arctic silver 5 on the processor and put it back together. Surprisingly it looked as though it already had silver compound on it, and I am even more willing to think that it was since there was no change in temps when I put it back together.

The only hardware issues i have had, is 2 dead pixels on my notebook, the drive works fine. Screen is lovely, keyboard responds well, wireless works, can't say I have had any real problems.
Key thing to remember about shipping, is even the stuff you buy at the store is treated this way, plus HP doesn't make the drive they distribute it in there systems. Its probably just a bad one of the bunch. At least they are overnighting a new one to you without complaining.
I agree though, that would suck if you have to watch ship dates to get a new drive.
If you have a desktop, try to keep vital data there and access it over a network, especially if its vital always keep a backup. HD's themselves don't last forever. Until you have had any PC for atleast 6 months with no problems that is when you can rely on it for data storage of more vital information.

no stickers on the inside either. Both the 5xx and the 6xx are LGA775 so they are interchangable. You just have to have a board that supports it, and since the x6000 has the options for the 6xx chips, I'm guessing they work..
