well if use the coupons and such (the 750 off helps a lot) get the 256 ram as i did in my x6000 order, and give up a little on the pentium m(go for a 1.7 or 1.8) it's not a bad deal, but it is still more expensive.

Before buying the Dell I9300 I would look into this. The I9200 was a failure (well, not failure, but a downfault) because of this screen....if dell hasn't fixed it, I would really put some thought into it, to bad you can't go to a retail outlet and check it out....almost like buying a car without test driving it.

    http://www.notebookreview.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=13457

Some of these I9300 owners are seeing the sparkle effect...why dell didn't fix this amazes me. These are some imputs from I9300 owners...some of these folks seem to have the same screen as the I9200 has.

Well my ship date is the 29th of this month... Only I ordered the zd8000 due to the fact that they didn't have the 256meg video or 7200rpm drive on the x6000 anymore... When i ordered mine the other week i still got the extra $100 off the HP because they didn't have those options available on the compaq anymore and i complained... Now i'm interested to see what happenes around my ship date.

What tacjam said is right, thats why I got rid of my I9200 within a week. Would have been 5 days but it was cheaper for me to ship it during the week so I waited til the weekend was over.

I won't go into lots of details on its failure in a X6000 thread, but the screen was the only real noticable problem, I say that because most people didn't keep it long enough for performance to matter. For its size, being its about the size of the x6000 no full keyboard was a bummer. If you want information on the problems with I9200 email me with questions, or go to dell's webiste forums and type in I9200 display problems to see what is going on.

I think in the I9300 they changed the screen or added someother technology to it, but I don't know if it was enough. The screen was frosty and dim, it didn't distinguish colors well and had a gradiant effect that dell said was normal. Good luck dell buyers.

    THOM's BOGUS JOURNEY

Just thought I'd follow up with everybody on my ridiculous Compaq experience. Been reading others' statements here. I had started to get a little nervous when I read Consumer reports year end that said Compaq has the highest repair rate, with HP close, and Dell just barely above them. Wish I could afford an Apple or a Toshiba, they were the highest by a longshot.
Anyway, I had ordered the X6000, fully loaded with the highest end stuff (256mb, 7200rpm, etc) on the 19th of Feb, and despite the Consumer warnings I was excited and couldn't wait. Yes, due to be completed BY the 14th of March. So, I started calling, everyday, last Friday, because I sold my Dell 5100 for a boatload of dough, and the people were starting to get upset that they didn't have it yet.
The Friday girl said, "It will not be delayed sir, everything is on schedule".
The Monday (the 14th) guy said, "You'll have a tracking number by the end of the day."
The Tuesday (now the 15th) guy said, "Sorry, your tracking number will be there tonight."
The Wednesday guy said, "I don't know what's up, I don't see any delay messages here."
FINALLY, the Thursday guy said, "Oh, it's been delayed until AT LEAST THE 31st!!!" So, I get pissed, throw around the word liar and that kind of thing, and the prick hangs up. So, I call back, get a human, calm down, and say I want to file a complaint with the supervisor and cancel my pathetic order.
The supervisor, as usual, knows a lot more. He tells me they have MAJOR problems in the factory. He says they can't even call there to figure out what's up, though he tried while I was on the line. He says if I was to order one now it would be a 2- 3 month wait, AND that the 31st date I was given was a best case scenario, and probably would be delayed again. He was very frustrated with his company and said that he and his ilk have been fuming about this stuff to higher ups, to no avail. He said I was supposed to get an email about the delay, but I never got it, though they have the correct address. He gave me the $50 coupon code, and placed some kind of a nebulous cancel order (he said the he couldn't reach the factory to cancel for sure, but to call them when I get an email from FedEx that it's on the way and they will turn it around).
After breathing a sigh that I could actually go and get the Dell 9200 (WITH THE XGA + ONLY) spec'd the same but with the 2.1 P-M for $500 less than it was when I ordered the X6000, I asked him, "why the hell can I get a custom built PC from Dell in a week, but I have to wait 3 months for yours?" He said that's the $64,000 question and he wished he had an answer. Beautiful company. So, I have pissed off my buyer, wasted a month waiting, lost faith in what seemed like a fabulous deal on a great machine, and learned that efficiency is worth a little more. I was so ready to dump Dell, but it looks like that won't be this time. Never had a single problem with my 5100 in 3 years, so, whatever. Bummer, though, the X is a gorgeous machine. At least I won't have to carry around that spare battery now.

Now that the highend graphic cards are back I can gladly recommend this notebook once again as one of the best values on the market. Unless you require something stronger for personal reasons there isn't a current better deal.

Hope this helps out potential buyers.

Glad everyone's ship dates will get a boost, for those that waited and didn't cancel you will be glad you did. [8D]

In response to the very long history of a bad deal. Things do happen. I don't know this for sure, but everyone I knew said don't get a compaq, they are bad and break down easily. Not worth the money ect. For the older lines I have seen them myselves and agree.

I can't say this for sure, because I don't follow company sales, but I would guess that if alot of people felt this way and the sales showed it, that HP/Compaq didn't expect the volume turnout they got. Dell is the only PC company that I would buy from without seeing the notebook first hand before buying, but that was a flop especially with the I9200. This is the first time I have seen a solid lineup of notebooks from Compaq that are both diverse and well designed. I think the real problem they have is the products projected sales and lifespan.

I don't think the company facilities was ready to handle the turnout. I could be wrong, but If you have seen how may people have read these posts, it is possible that some (a great number) have ordered it based on what they have read and it flooded the company.

I ordered mine on feb 7th. I got mine feb 23, with no delays. I got it two days early. I ordered mine earlier than most though. That also supports my theory.

Man, I really feel for you guys. I know this HAS to leave a bad taste in you mouths.....I ordered mine in Jan with no delay, I think I was one of the first. If I were in your shoes...I to would be looking elsewhere as well, just do some research and get a machine you will be happy with, don't settle for anything less! I wonder if ZD8000 owners who orded are having these problems? As far as the quality of HP/Compaq, For the amount of ZD7000's sold, I really haven't heard alot from that community, they must be happy. The thing I hear the most about is loose power connections, but in the ZD8000/X6000 lines they fixed this with the new connection.

I had pretty much the same expierence I ordered my
x6000 with the 7200, brightview and 256mb ATI on 16-feb and
received it a week eariler than the site orginally projected
(Mar 2nd instead of Mar 9th)

So far no problems whatsoever, glad the high end Video card
is back I suggestted this laptop to a couple of people then
said hold-on when the Video Card and 7200 HD disappeared.

As far as HP/Compaq build quality goes I have had several about
8 (6 desktops 2 laptops) since 1999 all are still running except
a year 2000 compaq laptop that had a hard disk failure a couple of months ago (this is what the X6000) replaced.

    Your mileage may Vary.

    Question about power supplies.

I was looking through some documentation on the X6000 and it
looks like the power supply spec is 135-185W so I was just wondering
which power supply most people have mine has a sticker that
says replace with HP Spare 378678-001

For those that are having problems with their orders I am sorry. This machine is really great tho and if you have the patience to keep waiting instead of cancelling and going elsewhere I'd do my best to wait. I ordered mine in February and got it on March 4th, 2 days sooner than I thought I'd get it.

I have been playing some new games on mine and they run great. Been playing Star Wars Republic Commando and the new Brother In Arms and they run very smoothly.

My only complaint about this laptop is the fact that the battery doesn't last very long, but I knew that when I got it so that's OK.

The only thing I would like to add, is for all those discouraged and ready to cancel your orders, please do the research on your replacement choice for this notebook.

When you do the research its nice to read reviews of companies and magazines, but get the reviews of everyday users to find out the real story, forums are the best source for reviews in my opinion.

Make sure you weigh the cost and benefits carefully and remember if enough people cancel their orders then those who stuck it out are more likely to get theirs sooner.

I would be pissed if this happened to me, especially since you have to pay up front. There are places like fry's that sell preconfigured x6000's as well you may want to pick one of those up and mod it to your needs. But I'm not sure what kind of options your looking at.

team79 I had the same power supply as that. It says on the label its a 135w power supply. I made a post about this on page 28. That thing got really hot and took about 5-6 hours to charge a battery. I called HP and asked about the heat and they said it was the wrong one. They sent me a 180w P/N 344500-004 and it made a big difference. This one is a lot cooler and charges the battery a lot faster. Maybe you should give them a call.

Nope they sent me a new one in 2 days. I asked if they wanted me to repack the old one and send it back, they said they didn't want it. With as hot as it got it's probably junk now anyways. Or it soon would be if I kept using it.

Wow, glad you got the proper power supply! This thing is a power hog, at it's peak it uses all the 180W that the correct one supplies. I think everyone should make sure they are using the correct one. For those people that got two, I would check to make sure both are the 180W model. This post is getting better and better...I don't think we missed ANYTHING with this laptop.

    I need help.

I called HP about the transformer being 135W, they told me that it is fine and depends on the system rather you get the 180W transformer or the 135W. If anyone can help me out with proof that the system requires the transformer that would be cool.

If anyone has an email about it they could forward to me ect. I would be greatful.

    I have a:

    X6000
    Win xp pro
    256mb ram
    60GB 7200 RPM
    x600 vid card
    1680x1050 brightview
wireless G no bluetooh or speed boost
    P4 2.8Ghz

If anyone has a comparable system that has the 180w that would be helpful too. Thanks for all the help guys, I would have never known about the transformer if it wasn't for this thread.[ :D][8D]

So, my notebook is finally out of China and left the FedEx sort facility in Anchorage, AK at 3:51pm yesterday (18th). What are the chances of it being delivered here in St. Louis sometime today? The estimated delivery date is Monday, so I guess it'll probably get here then, but one can always hope.

Power supply, I wondered if that would be the response, (depends on
the system), I downloaded the .pdf manuals from the HP website which
is where i found the reference to 135-185W for the AC adapter.

I have the 135W I haven't noticed what I would call first degree
burns from touchking the adapter just what I would call warmness.

Makes me wonder what the magic combination to get the 180W adapter was though.

In one respect I would prefer the 135W adapter if it is sufficient we plan on taking a trip in our Van or Motorhome and I have a releative small power inverter so If it can run on 135 I could
have other stuff plugged into the inverter in addition to the X6000

Let me know what you hear.

It's a 200W portable that plugs into an accessory outlet, so if I
can be by with 135W for the X6000 and can plug other items into
inverter also. In the motorhome I have the option of using the
generator but that's not an option in the conversion van.

well the 135w one i had got very hot. I had it on a rug floor and decieded to put it on a paper book, After about 3-4 hours of heavy usage it put a brown tint on the paper! I'm not calling it burnt but it did mess it up.

I called the HP CSR told them that and that the label side was very, very hot and smelled like burning plastic. Probably why they don't want the old one back lol.

It's just crazy that some people get the 180W and some get the 135W power supply. I have to do more research, but I read somewhere that the ZD8000 uses 180W at it max. Let me do some checking to see if I can find that for you guys.

If you have the 180W power supply what are the specs of your machine? I wonder if we can figure this out with some posts. I would like to know why some machines require 180W and some 135W. If you don't mind please post your specs and wattage. Since I have mostly the high end everything, I wonder if its:

    The CPU
    The bluetooth
    The Speedboost
    The Dual layer DVD
    The RAM

Those are the only things I didn't max out on. Thanks in advance.

    This is what I ordered:

    3.0Ghz 530HT, 256MB PC-3200, Brightview 1440x900, 60GB 7200, 256MB x600, Single layer DVD burner, Wireless with speedboost.

Also when I was checking into what screen I have I noticed that sometimes on the Display Properties-Settings tab the screen resolution is sometimes maxed out at 1440x900. Then when I check again it shows I can go to 2048x1536. If I change it to the 2048x1536 it comes up an error then maxes out at 1440x900. Didn't know if this has happened to anyone else.

I had two of these notebooks same configuration except one had 128mb ATI x600 and the other the 256mb ATI x600.
For some reason the one with 256mb card wouldn't let me play the first HALO game at all, but it played fine on the one with 128mb card.

could any one install this game and see if it works for them[?]

I would also like to add that I also had the ZD8000 with same config. and it would not play on this system either not sure why[?] it played everything else I threw at it.

    any input would be great

From what I have seen it appears that the faster processors need the 180W supply, however I do see 180W with speedboost and DVD Dual layer support.

Which leads me to believe it is based off the max power consumed. If you have a faster processor are burning a DVD and using wireless with speedboost then you are using more power than me. That may be why you got the 180W. However I also noticed that if you run a movie off the notebook with the 135W supply it gets super hot to the touch, but it doesn't while just recharging the battery or using regular wireless.

I still think everyone should get the 180 supply for this thing. No matter what you can't have more watts comming in than what the power source allows. May hurt ya if your playing games using this thing to the max.

yea to bad i was one of the first to get this system[^]. I got it the first week it was out on HP's site thats how i know the 128mb version would run the first HALO just fine. But i checked their site the week i got it and noticed the x600 with 256mb was an option then, so i sent mine back and got a new one.

i loved the notebook but having to carry it around all the time and get it out at least 7 times a day I just wanted something lighter. but at that time for the price and being Pcie I thought ah whats 7 extra pounds. Two weeks of carrying it around with me on my shoulder I realized mabey i should have gotten a smaller screen[|)]

i'm awaiting to see what the zv6000 offers hope it has a good card..

so will someone tell me will HALO (the first one) play on anyones X6000/ZD8000[?] If it dont does anyone have a clue if it's the card or the machine.

I hear you on carrying it around. I don't know if you have a backpack but that might be a good idea if you don't already. Also I noticed that backpack support straps aren't that comfortable either so I had to mod one using seatbelt cushions for mine, now its light as air.

I don't have halo, so I can't answer that question, but I am curious as to what the error is, I have heard of people playing doom 3 with this notebook, I can't believe that such a old game could be more resource intensive than doom 3?

I think now that more people have this notebook it might be a good time to reask this question.

Is there anyone out there with a x6000 that put linux on their notebook. If so what distro and how compatible is it. I have been thinking about putting it on in place of windows, or maybe a dual boot. But I am not sure which one to use at this point.

Did anyone else call hp about the 135W power supply and got a similar response to what I got about it being the right one? If so were you able to talk them into giving you the 180W and how?

Hello all. This is my first post to this thread and my first laptop. I have read every post and I would like to thank those who have posted so much useful information. This information is what sold me on the X6000. I ordered mine on 2/25 and received it on 3/4 (one week early). My computer specs are as follows:

    - 3.2 ghz cpu
    - 256mb X600 video card
    - 7200 rpm hard drive
    - 256mb ram (which I have since upgraded to 2GB of 533mhz ram thanks to Tacjam's suggestion)
    - 17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView
    - Integrated 56K Modem + 10/100 Ethernet LAN
    - Belkin Pre-N wireless card
    - 180 watt power supply

Fortunately I have had no hardware issues with my laptop. I did have one software issue, however. When I got my laptop, I played a DVD on it. It played and looked great. Since that first time I had upgraded some drivers and installed the latest versions of ITunes and several other programs. Last week I went to play another DVD and Intervideo WinDVD said to insert a disc. A movie was already in the drive. I checked under My Computer and the D: drive was not recognized. I went under Device Manager and the cd/dvd drive was listed but with a Yellow exclamation mark.

I called HP support and got a very friendly, well-spoken guy from Washington State. To make a long story short, we were on the phone for about an hour doing such things as System Restore, removing certain programs, etc. and we seemed to have it narrowed down to the ITunes/Quicktime install. Along with deleting ITunes and reinstalling Quicktime standalone version, he had me go into the Registry and remove some lower and upper filters. I couldn't begin to remember how deep these were buried but it worked and I have not had a problem since. He assured me that the registry change would have no ill side effects. Besides this incident, my unit has performed flawlessly.

Of course the battery does not last too long but I knew this beforehand. For those that may be interested, I watched Star Trek First Contact with my wireless card removed and all settings standard. The movie played for 1 hour 19 minutes before the computer shut off. So if you wanted to watch a standard movie on a plane, you'd need two batteries.

Also for those interested, I installed and ran SisSoftware Sandra benchmarks. The results were as follows:

    CPU Arithmatic- 4736 and 1977/3339
    CPU Multimedia- 11631 and 15614
    Hard Drive- 32 MB/sec
    Memory Bandwidth- 2421 and 2409 (38% efficiency)

Can someone explain why the memory bandwidth was only 38%? Is it because the motherboard is a bottleneck to the memory?

Good luck to the few of you who have had defective X6000s and those that are still waiting.

    Steve
