You know what? I am here right now with two guys that have a Dell I9200 and one has a I9300, so of course we had our little side by side comparison. The guy with the 9200 is selling his and getting a X6000. We compared them with halo...we couldn't see a difference in frame rates....last but not least, The sound and movies on the x6000 had far better sound and video quality. All three machines were side by side. The Dells are nice, they don't seem as solid as the hp though. The person that has the I9300 said had he known about it, he would gotten the hp. Having all three of them side by side...I don't know, mine was cheaper than both of them and I wouldn't trade it for either of them....my 02
X6000 / P-4 3.2GHz (540) / 2gigs PC2 4200 (533MHz) DDR2 Ram / 7200RPM 60 gig HHD / 8x DVD Burner and the Brightview!
Well, when I get my 9300 I'll judge for myself, and let you all know how it does. All I know is that the x6000 couldn't play Call Of Duty at the resolution and quality settings that my desktop Radeon 9600 can. Not to mention awful battery life and radiating heat. If just those three qualities are better on the 9300, I will be a happy guy. I already know the heat and battery life will be better. I can't see how the gaming could not be better on the 9300.
I realize this a thread for the x6000, and you guys love them, but I think I have a right to post here since I used one for a month and will now be comparing it to another laptop of similar price. I had bought the x6000 because of this threads seemingly endless praise, and I think that it was hyped up quite a bit more than it deserved. And I was disappointed after using it for a month. I just wanted to post another opinion about it even if my opinion isnt welcome by some.

No more juice all opinions should be aired but this is a desktop replacement (laptop) so the weight and battery life should be no suprise. As far as the heat issue thats probably why dell stopped carrying the p4 laptop they were having people returning theirs right and left. But i havent heard but one instance of it burning out where dell;s p4's burned supposedly due to dust being pulled in from under the laptop?? WHich everyone said could be solved by blowing it out once a week.

BTW I am thinking of putting up a 512 DDR333 mhz. If anyone is intrested. I originally bought it for the dell I9200 but I switched to the x6000 a week later and it became useless. It has only seen a week of use in its life and is in great shape. Let me know if you are intrested.

I hope this link works.
http://www.ec.kingston.com/shop/partsinfo.asp?ktcpartno=KTH-ZD8000A/1G
"Click FIND to see a list of systems that use this part..."
You will be amazed that your machine is listed here, X6000. []
Try this memory module; KTH-ZD8000A/1G.
The specs on the KTH-ZD8000/1G is 400mhz as mentioned several times on this thread. This is shown as required per p/n 374726-001. But you should know, that if you ordered your machine with the single 512 meg strip at 533 mhz speed you are getting the full speed chip set. However you will need to order the sodimm kingston KTH-ZD8000A/1G for additional mem to be added for 1.5 gig total. This memory is rated at 533mhz and is 1 gig. hp# 385822-001. Go and check it out. If you ordered the ZD8000 or p/n 374726-001 (1 gig mem) and you have a single 256 meg stick you can simply add this stick to your machine for 1.25 gig of mem with no latency problems. That is why they seperated these numbers. Most people order these machines with little memory. HP will load these machines with the cheaper slower chips mostly 256 meg. Simply put, 533mhz + 400 mhz chip mix might cause lockups or blue screens and this means less service calls. The motherboard bios settings is probably defaulted to 400mhz. But, I do not know how the bios is set up. If this is true, then both intermixes will default to the slower mhz and will work. That is why you get different speeches from the tech support peoples. If you own one of these machines go into the bios and look for yourselves. DO NOT OVERCLOCK if you can. Notebooks do not have the cooling provisions needed.
E-Mail me and let me know what you think.

Hey tacjam:
Since you were infront of the I9200 and I9300, I am curious, how were the displays. Did you see the problems with the 9200 carry over to the 9300?
I personally don't care about the performance as much when it comes down to resolutions of Vid cards, because I'm not a PC gamer. The reason I switched to the x6000 was because I couldn't look at the 9200 on a daily basis. I like the idea that the sound and DVD playback is better.[]
Also just to clearify something up for the one talking about a heat problems and battery life, the X6000 doesn't have a heat problem, those that got notebook coolers, got them as PM (preventive maintenance). Heat is a problem for all pc equipment. The X6000 runs hotter than most because it uses a desktop processor.
Also the battery life is shorter than most. But im sure you don't get lots of battery life when you are playing intensive 3D games because the hardware is being pushed hard. I don't know any hardcore PC gamers that like to use notebooks on a day to day basis especially when they have access to a much stronger desktop PC. For those that do use the notebook for PC games, I'm sure most of you leave it plugged in to the adapter to make sure it doesn't die in the middle of the game.
The overall point of the X6000 is it is a great value for its price and it can even play the most current resource intensive games out there. It's not the best, but the best is overpriced and most people can't afford it.

For everyone on here that purchased the X6000: Was price the main reason why you chose this notebook over the ZD8000?
A couple of months ago the X6000 was almost $200 cheaper than the 8000, but recently I've been configuring the notebooks and, depending on the rebates, the ZD8000 is cheaper than the X6000. If money was not an issue any more, which notebook would you choose and why? -
I think I'd still choose the X6000 over the ZD8000 just because I like the look of it better. I like the Silver notebook better than the Black ZD8000. Basically they are the same thing except the case. I had a black notebook for years with the black keys and after a long time the black keys kinda looked worn, I mean, they were polished smooth and it showed on the black keys. I don't think the keys on the X6000 will look that way, stand out as much as long as you keep them clean and don't have crud on your fingers when you use it.
X6000, 3.2 Ghz, 512meg ram, 256 ATI X600 video, 17" Brightview Screen, 60gig 7200rpm Hard Drive, 8X DVD Burner, 54g 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster
Upgrading from a Sager Celeron 500, 192meg ram, 6gig 4200 RPM Hard Drive, 8 meg ATI Rage LT Video Card, 15" Screen, 4X DVD player. -
I've been lurking here for two days reading all 54 pages of this forum on the x6000, and your positive input has helped me make the final decision to buy one today. I don't game like most of you, but have purchased it to do 2D photo-editing work, something my old Sony GRX500 (P4 1.6, 512mb RAM, 4200-rpm HD) no longer can deliver on. It is simply too slow, and one program in particular needs massive amounts of RAM to work efficiently.
What I ordered was the x6000 w/630 CPU, WSXGA, 2gb RAM, base HD, base DVD/CDRW, base ATI Radeon, and base networking. On eBay I found a 7K60 HD (#6756383218, one left as of 7:30pm CDT tonight) for $159 including shipping, and I plan on replacing the base HD with this one. Therein lies a question: Is there any intrigue replacing the HD? It appears it is behind the cover accessible on the bottom of the computer, so I assume it is a matter of removing the cover and then the drive. I thought about cloning the drive using Norton Ghost, but before installing any programs it should be easy to replace the drive and then perform a recovery using the disks that came with the drive. If there is a better procedure, please advise.
I look forward to watching this forum in the future, maybe contributing when I have something important enough to say. -
Just FYI I saw an HP patch (softpaq) for the touchpad came out
last thursday or friday, It installed and actually brought my
scroll ability on the touchpad back to life (I normally use a usb mouse so normally have the touchpad turned off). I had lost the
scroll ability from the touchpad after installing a microsoft update.
The patch is sp29913.exe dated 03/30
-
Yep, for me it was a price issue, at the time (mid-feb)
the X6000 was at least $200 cheaper than a similar HP -
I picked the X6000 because of price. If the ZD8000 was cheaper I would pick it. They are almost the same machine with a different color. I do like the silver better...but for a couple of hundred bucks, I can live with black.

I was at compusa the other day when a salesman approached me. I was looking at a different laptop, but complimented what a big beautiful screen was on the Zd8000(XGA Briteview). He told me people don't like the model and that it was being replaced!!! I couldn't believe it. For one he could have tried to sell me up seeing as though I was interested, and didn't it only come out late last year. That thing ain't being replaced. Where do they get these people.

I've ordered an x6000, scheduled to be delivered on the 21st, with the base HD because the 7200-rpm Hitachi isn't available. I also picked up a Hitachi drive on Ebay and will be swapping it out. Could someone who's done it give me a tutorial on this process? I assume the drive plate on the bottom of the computer is held on by screws and that the drive can be easily removed once the cover is off.
Then, after installing the new drive, plan on running the recover disks to install the basics as delivered. Does this sound like a good plan? I also thought about using Norton Ghost to clone the drive, but it seems that since no other progs will be installed at the time using the Compaq recovery disks would be best. -

Well its sitting in front of me now wow the screen is very nice size how can people use a 15" laptop lol. Oh well yes it heats up i purchased the docking stand which helps it has wireless keyboard and mouse so for home use the heat isnt an issue. Fans on the bottom as with all notebooks is a bad idea. one hour and a half battery life. Oh and with the stand i can tip the notebook up a little and allow a little more space behind for air circulation. But i havent doen any temp tests., Fans run quite a bit and are a bit loud .

I won't say it's the best, but I have the lapcool2 approx. $30
The lapcool itself is narower than the X6000 but it has 2 large
fans that seem to move the air quite well.
Just keep in mind that it runs off of a USB port so you may
want to plug it into a usb hub instead of the X6000 itself.

Shawn and Joe Cruz, thanks for the pointers on the HD installation. The hardware install looks like a piece of cake, unlike some notebooks I've owned in the past.
As for installing the OS on the new drive, Shawn recommended using another XP disk, which I can easily do, but what about the necessary software like CD burning, etc.? I have an old copy v5 of Nero, but it probably won't work with a new DVD/CD burner. Is there anything, other than CD-burning software, that I would need that wouldn't be available other than by using the recovery disks?
Why not just just the recovery disks and uninstall all the junk they install at the factory? It seems that would be easier than installing a barebones OS, then downloading and installing all the drivers, necessary apps, etc. from the Compaq site. Can I even *get* the necessary apps (CD burning, etc.) from there?

Uknowme, I haven't received the x6000 yet and had assumed there was only one set of disks, which would be to install everything back to the factory defaults. If there is a separate driver disk, I can see going with a clean XP install, then the driver install. That's what I'll do: OS, then drivers.
Can each software program be installed separately? The only one I will probably want to install is the CD burning software. So what're my options there? I have Nero v5 here, but that's it, and it probably is too old to access a recent burner. -

Actually, XP's burning routine would work fine for the work I do on the notebook, which is only to copy files. I do need the files to be compatible with Macs, though, and that requires ISO 9660 (Level 2, <31 characters). I'm not sure how XP's routine works.

For all those with cooling issues. I travel alot, so I didnt want to have to lug around a big cooling pad with fans built in so I simply ordered the Traveler CoolPad made by Targus.
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=50233441&pfp=SEARCH
It just puts the laptop at an angle so the fans can be more effective. Seems to do the trick nicely. If you are looking for something to cool it completely down you wont find anything like that. Laptops by their very nature get warm, sometimes even hot, but that is the nature of the beast.

Has anyone read the CNET review about Pentium 4 processors?
The article "RIP, Pentium 4" states that Pentium M notebooks will be pushing out Pentium 4 notebooks, replacing the outdated, heavy desktop replacements that have extremely short battery lives. I knew about the weight and battery life of the HP ZD8000 and Compaq X6000 notebooks, and still intended to purchase one, however this article made me second guess my decision. I don't want to invest in this notebook if it's going to become obsolete within a few months. Should I buy a notebook with a Pentium M processor instead?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. -
Thanks for all the info so far guys. Just wondering if I buy the 6050 here in canada I'm stuck with the 4200rpm drive. If I run a ex. USB 7200 would that solve my problem? I'm doing music recording, and though I've tested a centrino with a 4200hd (it ran fine with 10 tracks playing and 8 recording @48khz) I'm looking to the future(96khz recording).
thanks -
Notebooknewbie: I'm buying an x6000 (due in Monday) to use as a busniess tool (photo editing), and I don't plan on replacing it in the next 2-3 years, perhaps longer. Computers, by the dynamic nature of the market, depreciate rapidly--and I don't look at them as good direct investments that will hold their monetary value. More like indirect investments for me, they are used as tools and generate their worth by the work they do.
The "desktop replacement" fits my needs well and when new models replace this one I won't be jumping to keep up with the bleeding edge. But this is just my take on things, as I buy computers as business tools and never expect a great return when the time comes to sell the old and buy new hardware.
I always tell friends that computers are more or less obsolete when you take delivery, and if you wait for the next new rumored feature or trend you will never buy anything. There's always something new just around the corner.
