Hud, I ordered an x6000 two weeks ago and expect it to be delivered Monday. The 7200-rpm drive wasn't available then and still isn't, so I bought it with the cheapest drive available (40gb 4500rpm) and found a 60gb Hitachi 7200 on Ebay. I will install it when the notebook arrives.

Dell has them for $180, but that's steep. A few are available on Ebay. I wouldn't let the lack of a decent drive be a major drawback as easily as drives are to replace on these notebooks.

Thanks iclick, I guess I should have mentioned I already have an external 7200 80 gig usb drive so I'm more wondering if it would funtion up to the speed of an internal 7200rpm.

Hud, I doubt if the USB drive will cut it vis-a-vis the internal HD. I have two firewire drives and one USB drive on this desktop, and none perform even nearly up to the level of an internal IDE drive.

Has anyone used their X6000 with two monitors in extended desktop mode? I have the ATI x600 128 mb card, and whenever I run a second monitor, there's a lot of static on the second screen. I've tested it with different monitors and happens on all of them. Any ideas?

This article compares external firewire and usb as well as internal drives:

    http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr04/articles/pcnotes.htm

Looks like I'm better off using an external than an internal 4200rpm.

    Thanks for all the comments.

For anyone that's intrested, the 60gb 7200 RPM drive
seems to be back as a option on the X6000 again, hpshopping.com
does list it as a 5-day delay however

Just wondering guys... I ordered my laptop on March 30th. It says it *should* be shipped out by April 15th. Well... this weekend passed and still nothing. Just wondering if it's normal for hp to miss a date and not notify anybody? I'm not worried about not getting it, I'm confident it will arrive eventually. I was just curious as to the status of my order. Could I call tech support or something? Thanks guys!

Oh yeah... 59 pages strong! Haha... good job!

From what I've read in the posts here is that they update the web page telling you the status of your shipment after 10pm EST. I'd wait till tonight and if you haven't heard anything give the customer service a call to check the status.

Yep, 59 pages long, nice thread with lots of info here. I'd hate to have to start at page 1 and read them all again, hehe.

    X6000, 3.2 Ghz, 512meg ram, 256 ATI X600 video, 17" Brightview Screen, 60gig 7200rpm Hard Drive, 8X DVD Burner, 54g 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster

Upgrading from a Sager Celeron 500, 192meg ram, 6gig 4200 RPM Hard Drive, 8 meg ATI Rage LT Video Card, 15" Screen, 4X DVD player.

Hmmm.. My middle fan doesn't turn on either. Does anyone else have this problem with their X6000.

Also, if someone could plug an lcd screen into their monitor out port and see if it gives a clear picture, I would appreciate it. I get static on the external monitor. It's not all too bad, just annoying.

    Thanks.

I've read this from page one. It took me over an hour to do it, here at work. I'll keep an eye out tonight.

I was wondering if anybody here had any ideas on where to get a good price for memory for the 6000's? I guess I'd be looking at DDR2 PC-4200 right? I'd be looking for a 1 Gig stick now and then upgrade to another stick if needed. I know info about RAM was posted a few pages back, but those are old, and was looking for more up to date info. Thanks!

I know that on my x6000 (before I sent it back) the fans would not always kick on at the same time. Play a game. When I played call of duty, it wouldn't take long for all 3 fans to kick on full speed.

If you play a game for 5 minutes, and turn the laptop over, and the middle fan still isn't spinning, then it is probably defective.

PS. It got delayed, but I will be getting my I9300 tomorrow, and I will post my review of it here compairing it to the x6000.

    Hello everyone,

I have to say I'm impressed by level of knowledge and insight of everyone here. I like what I read about the X6000 and was wondering, then, if you all here could help me decide if the X6000 is the laptop for me, since I don't know the laptop scene very well and it changes so rapidly. My needs are as follows:

    - It will be a desktop replacement. I travel at most 1-2 times per year and I'm always carrying heavy stuff, so weight isn't an issue...

    - The biggest task will probably be web surfing, with some very frequent Photoshop Elements work (so the 17 inch monitor will be nice) and occasionally putting together Powerpoint presentations. I will NOT be using it for games, as that's what my X-Box is for (I'm tired of chasing system rec's just for games).

    - I will be using a home wireless network.

    - I would like it to last (and be relevant) for about 2-3 years before I'll be upgrading to a new model. I don't care about the "fashion" or looks of the notebook...

So that's it. I don't understand the price differences between it and the HP ZD8000... Sometimes one is higher than the other. While the X6000 is currently about $200-$300 less than the ZD8000 similarly equiped now *after* rebates, it lists the "list" price of the X6000 about $500 more in the process (??). Bizarre. I also have a few questions...

    - For my needs (especially not gaming), how great a difference is 2.8 vs 3.2 Mhz processor? What is important in the processor choices?

    - Should I buy the least RAM possible and then buy better 3rd party upgrades? If so, which?

    - What have you folks done warrantee wise? I've known too many people whose Dell laptops have failed a few days AFTER their 1 year warrantees have run out...

    Thanks to everyone!

    - Garris

In my search for new RAM I came accross the kingston site. I have a question regadring what they offer? I cam accross this doing a search for 1gig ddr2-4200 sodimm. I assume this is what I would use?

    http://www.ec.kingston.com/shop/PartsInfo.asp?ktcpartno=KVR533D2S4/1G

And then for the hell of it, I did a search for offerings based on the HP/Compaq x6000 model laptop and got this...

    http://www.ec.kingston.com/shop/partsinfo.asp?ktcpartno=KTH-ZD8000A/1G

I guess my question is what's the difference? I'm assuming that the first link is a true "upgrade" while the second link is to the "official" hp-supported part(oem)? Interesintg, if I'm correct about the second link, the "upgrade" is cheaper than the "oem" part and in theory should perform better? Is this a good deal or should I stay away from Kingston?

As always guys, thanks for the informative posts!

I'm reposting this request so it doesn't get lost in the novel that is this thread.

I would really appreciate it if someone could hook up a secondary monitor (preferably an LCD) to their X6000, run both screens in extended desktop mode, and let me know if they get static on the secondary monitor. If you know a possible solution to this problem, that would be great too. I've already updated my bios, and tested all of the resolution/refresh rate combos. Is it possible to install the Catalyst driver from ATI?

    Thanks!

just out of curiosity what type of cable are you using to hook up both monitors, what are the monitors you are using, make and model, what driver do you have installed (omega or ATI). What type of equipment do you have around the monitors? Does the problem go away if you only use one of the two monitors?

    Persario X6000, 2.8Ghz, 2GB RAM, 60GB 7200RPM, Single Layer DVD Burner, Brightview 1680x1050, x600.
    [/quote]

Thanks for the response. I don't have any equipment around except for the laptop, the 17" sony lcd (SONY SDM-S73/B 17"), a cable modem, and a power strip. I've also used a 15" Dell lcd with the same results. The cable is just the standard cable that came with the monitor (15-Pin D-Sub). As for the driver, it's the one that came standard with the laptop, ATI I think. When I close the notebook and only use the external lcd, the problem persists. The problem also persists when I set the external lcd as the primary monitor.
    Thanks again!

I just got my new X6000. It's really cool!
But there is a problem with my X6000. Only two fans works when I am using the notebook, the one in the middle seems never work. What should I do, return it to the HP to fix it? Will it takes a long time to repaire it?
    Thanks

Now that I am back from the middle east and I got my hands on this laptop, I thought I would post for all you gamers out there. I play online games ie.. Battlefield Vietnam and Joint Ops and I gotta tell you, I am loving this thing. Have settings on high and it runs like a champ. No lag whatsoever during gaming except due to server connection, but none due to performance of the laptop.

    This thing is Awesome!!!!

Comparing Compaq x6000 to the Dell Inspiron 9300

Looks: x6000 wins hands down. I really like the looks of the x6000 much better than the 9300. The top of the case looks more durable on the 9300 though, and I like the idea of the quick snap covers to preserve the top from scratches and dings. After 30 days my x6000 already had a few scratches on it. So, I think that gives the 9300 a few more points for durability.

Keyboard: I would have a hard time saying witch has a better keyboard. The good thing about the x6000 is the addition of the number pad. Other than that the Dell is better. The 9300’s keyboard is firmer and quieter. I usually use an external mouse and keyboard when at my desk, so the keyboard is not a huge issue for me.

Display: The x6000 I used had the 17 inch WSXGA+ BrightView Wide Viewing (1680x1050) and it was bright and clear. I had no complaints about the display. The 9300 uses 17 inch UltraSharp Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife (1920x1200)
The Dell screen looks just as sharp and clear as the Compaq screen, and I noticed none of the “sparkle” effect some people complain about with them. I don’t have both of them here to compare side by side, but I can’t tell a difference in quality just by using both. I actually prefer the Dell’s (1920x1200) resolution because I love the extra room, and I can read everything just perfectly.

Applications: The 9300 has a 2.0 Ghz Pentium M and the x6000 had a 3.2 GHz Pentium 4. They both have a 7200 RPM HDD and they both have 1 Gig of memory. The normal applications I use (word, firefox, ect) are exactly the same on both computers. I notice very little load time and good performance all around.

Gaming: Here is where the differences became very obviously better on the 9300. I played Call of Duty, Halo, Brothers in Arms, and Farcry on both machines. In every instance, the 9300 can run the games at a higher resolution, and is smoother. WAY smoother. In fact the 9300 runs all games I played better than my desktop computer can. I can run everything I listed here at 1600x1200 everything set to high with very little or no video lag at all. That was one of my major complaints about the x6000. It just wasn’t up to the gaming task. I justified it by saying… well it is a laptop, and they just can’t perform as well as a desktop. I don’t say that anymore after using the 9300 with the Geforce 6800 256MB. The thing is great for games. There is a huge difference between the x600 256 and the 6800 256. The Geforce 6800 is better in every way.

Heat: The 9300 gets a little warm. The x6000 gets just plain hot. That was another thing I hated about the x6000. Now I can use the 9300’s keyboard without getting 3rd degree burns on my lap and right wrist. The top of the 9300 stays cool to the touch. Thanks to the Pentium M. the 9300 is running at 27 C right now. FanGUI said it was 34C right after I got done playing COD for 2 hours =)
The 9300 has 2 fans. The x6000 has 3. The fans on the 9300 usually stay at a lower speed and aren’t as noisy as the x6000 fans.

Battery Life: I haven’t done a real world test of the battery life, but I have had it unplugged for 1 hour and 14 minutes so far, and it still says I have 3:45 hours left. On the x6000 I would probably be running out of battery power soon.
Sound: While watching a movie, I had to turn the volume to max on the x6000 sometimes, and it wasn’t loud enough. I turned the sound down to ¾ on the 9300 and it was loud enough. The speaker quality is also very good. The 9300 and the x6000 had good sound and neither was tinny. I don’t have them to compare side by side, but I think the 9300 has a better range of sound (probably due to the built in sub woofer)

Price: I paid $1580 For the x6000 and I paid $1554 for the 9300 (I used 30% off coupon code) I also bought 2 512 MB Memory chips that I have used in both of them at NewEgg.com so that isn’t included in those prices.

Conclusion: I am glad I got rid of the x6000 and made a good decision buying the 9300. It is better in every way other than looks. I have always been the kind of person to take function over looks anyway, so I am 100% happy with the x6000. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think the x6000 is a bad notebook, it is a good machine. The 9300 just has as good or better performance in everything that I care about. Gaming, Battery life, and Heat are all better on the 9300. And for about the same price, the choice is obvious to me.

Nice review of the I9300. There is a way to compare them side by side if you go to frys or costco. You don't have to own one.

The display problems appear to have gone away with the new Truelife display, which I am happy to hear about. As I have said before the X6000 isn't for everyone, PM is better for the on the go or portable user. The GeForce card is better because the texture rendering is much higher and it can handle more throughput, 256 doesn't mean as much as the card type.

I personally didn't like that resolution because I found myself squinting at everything, but that is subjective to taste. I find the full keyboard a must personally for a 17in desktop replacement, makes it much easier to work with and utilizes the keyboard plate space more efficiently.

Glad you can play games so well on it. As for me I am a console gamer. I am curious though, to know how long the battery lasts when you are playing a highly resource intensive game versus everyday use.

Would love to know where you found a 30 percent off coupon code?

    <hr height='1' noshade id='quote'></font id='quote'></blockquote id='quote'>

It is a promotion they are running quite frequently as of late. Just do a Google search for Dell coupon codes. Thats how I found it.

    Timak,

where by chance did you get a 30 percent off coupon, I was able to get the price down as low as 1680 with the coupon I found that gave you 750 off the price but that was bumping the processor down to a 1.86ghz and going with the 40 gig drive, 7200rpm 60gig wasn't an option on their site.

Great news! My x6000 has shipped. Thanks for all the reviews in this thread. I have read all 61 pages and counting. The lt was ordered 09 April and is in China now. Initially, I was concerned about the extensive delays in shipping during February and March. I understand this was due to hdd shortages with the 7200 drive. I had to settle for the 5400 hdd. It's okay. No plans to upgrade anytime soon.
This will be a work unit for my A/C business to keep track of my customers. But when I have to wait for them on occassion outside their home then I will breakout the HalfLife2 for short dashes into City 17.
I was excited to read the anticipation many of you had in waiting for each unit to ship. I now know how you feel. Less than one week to go. The great reviews really made me want it so much more.
However, the comparison review with the Dell 9300 was interesting because almost everyone in this thread had been downing Dells. But to each his own. If you are happy with your lt that's what counts. Keep the thread going. And thanks again.
Soon to be proud x6000 owner....

Thanks to JosephCruz and Driftchicken for the backup on our cherished product (or soon to be cherished in my case). Reading that comparison was kind of like going into a strangers house and thinking it was your friends place. Makes you wonder for a second what the heck is going on.
Anyway - more x6000 talk please - I have a space all cleared off on the front seat of my Isuzu box truck, my kitchen table and my office desk. Come on Fedex!
Also would appreciate any input concerning gaming differences between using the 7200 hdd and my upcoming 5400 hdd.

Congrats man! Happy to see you're a happy Dell owner.

    YOU MADE AN EXCELLENT CHOICE!

This is what you wanted to hear right? The obvious tone of your "review" is about how the 9300 is a much better than the 6000 and you go out of your way to prove that. There is one problem though... this is a compaq/hp thread. Your sparkling review of the dell 9300 doesn't really do any good here. Based on all this I'm also willing to bet that you did not post your review in the dell forum.

*As you can tell I've been waiting for timak to post his review because I knew from the start that his review would be merely a x6000 bash-fest. I mean... somebody who goes out and returns his x6000 (which has a thread of over 60 pages...) to buy a Dell 9300(which has more problem posts in their forum...) obviously needs to justify his actions.

Well... enjoy your new laptop man! I know I'll be injoying mine!
    <hr height='1' noshade id='quote'></font id='quote'></blockquote id='quote'>

First off, why don't you just check the Dell Forum and see that I posted the same thing there right after I posted this here.

Second, I owned the x6000 because of this thread, and I decided it wasn't right for me, then I bought the 9300, and realized it addressed every issue I had with the x6000. I posted my comparison to just let people know about other options.

As I stated at the end of my comparison, I don’t think that the x6000 is a bad notebook. It is just that the 9300 is better for what I use it for. If there are others looking here that want to use a notebook for the same reasons I do, I feel that I did them a service.

I have been following and contributing to this thread for quite a while, and I am completely justified posting a comparison to the x6000. This IS an x6000 forum. I just happened to like the 9300 better….. You would have to be really closed minded to get mad at me for posting a comparison of the x6000 on a x6000 thread. You wouldn’t have minded if I had come to the conclusion that I like the x6000 better…..

It is my opinion, agree or disagree. But don’t try to say I can’t post my opinions here.

I asked this question before, but not as many people had the x6000 at the time. Has anyone had any problems with the notebook, defects, hardware compatibility issues, O/S issues (not related to virus or spyware). I would like to know, I am curious. I love hearing the good stuff but I learn more from the bad stuff. Please let me know what you all think.
