No problems at all here, have had it about 48 days now and running like a champ. Burned off about 45 DVD's with it already too. This thing rocks for compressing Video and I only have 512 ram. Most of the load must be on the processor anyway but it blows the doors off my Athlon 2100 computer for compressing video.

    X6000, 3.2 Ghz, 512meg ram, 256 ATI X600 video, 17" Brightview Screen, 60gig 7200rpm Hard Drive, 8X DVD Burner, 54g 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster

Upgrading from a Sager Celeron 500, 192meg ram, 6gig 4200 RPM Hard Drive, 8 meg ATI Rage LT Video Card, 15" Screen, 4X DVD player.

I haven't played any online games yet with my laptop but I play Warcraft III with my boy and I'm connected wirelessly and have no problem. I know it's not exactly the same thing but it runs flawlessly.

If you want to test your Fans, download and install
the BIOS update, when it gets to the part about flashing
the BIOS All Fans will come on Faster/louder than I have ever
    heard them before.

yea thats what they eventually tried to tell me after 2 returns. but i just couldnt buy the fact that I could throw Halo (thats the game I had problems with) in any other notebook or desktop that met the system requirements and had no problems.

so I got a refund and went else where.

For anyone that might be interested, I measured the temperature of the hot area next to the trackpad during normal web surfing and not intense gaming, etc. The temp was a maximum of 100 degrees F. This was measured with a Craftsman Infrared thermometer.

I do have one issue I hope anyone might have an answer to. I have had my X6000 since April 6 and am really happy with it[:D]. It is by far the best personal pc I have ever had and should suit my needs as a student for the next 3 years. However, I am also an occasional gamer and like to play MOHAA and COD/UO. These are the only two games I have installed in my pc and have been playing online with both for the past 2 weeks. It runs fine and no lags and really happy with the graphics except for one problem :( Sometimes, not too often maybe twice every 4-5 hours of playing, the whole screen and image of my game turns much darker!! I mean I would be playing and everything looks like it turned from day to night!!! I would have to go to the graphics settings and turn brightness up then it would be ok again. I called tech support and tell told me that everything is as it should be and that IT IS NOT a graphics card issue but rather a software issue with the two games I am playing!!! This sucks because these are the only games I love to play right now [:(!] Has anyone had this problem with their system while gaming?? Is there a solution or should I have to live with it?? Do I send it back and get the graphics card replaced?? I mean it's not that bad right now, but it does happen everytime I game and its annoying to stop in the middle of a game and keep on re-adjusting the brightness settings just so I can see properly...[xx(] Please I need some advice and much needed help!! Thanks ahead of time for any help or advice you can provide! [:D]

    <hr height='1' noshade id='quote'></font id='quote'></blockquote id='quote'>

You know what, I wonder if its a power saving/windows issue. What I mean and this is just a guess:

I notice that if I unplug my AC source when using the notebook the screen gets dark, I have to brighten it with the brightness keys to get it back up. I wonder if there is either a power setting you have on that is causing it or maybe the AC gets lose and this causes it.

The other thing is you said it happens after 4-5 hours. I wonder if this is a safety precaution because the notebook might be to hot or the transformer may not be giving enough power to continue at your settings. When playing a game you are utilizing your hardware to the fullest possible. Do you have the 180W power supply. If not see if you can get one and test that.

    Two tests you can do.

    1. get a 180W if you don't have one and run the x6000 the same way see the results.
    2. play your games for 3hours, then give a five minute break, exiting game completly and restart the game and run the other 1-2hours see if it happens then. If it doesn't happen, it may be the load on the transformer or a safety precaution that windows might do to prevent detected possible problems from happening.

Sorry for the double post [V]

    Thanks for your reply Josephcruz,

Yes I do have the 180W power supply and I did have one instance when the plug to the power supply itself got loose. The computer just warned me of the power issue and promptly shutdown when the battery ran down. I just immediately replugged the power supply and booted back up and kept on playing. Again it's not such a bad thing because I can play for about a while, don't know how long, before this problem of getting dark occurs. I can easily fix it by adjusting the brightness in the graphics settings then it will ok again for a while, again don't know how long. You kinda loose track of time when your having so much fun playing online[ :p]
Now whether its a temperature issue I am not sure because the temperature is constant in both games around 68-69c for MOHAA/SH and 69-70c for COD/UO. All 3 FANS are in FULL THROTTLE when playing, BUT the temperature is so constant (checked with the software suggested in this thread) that is draws a horizontal line straight across so the fans work beautifully. Once I am done playing, the fans cool the whole system to 52c and below. Morever, since I have the lappy propped up in my modded notebook stand that I previously discussed, overheating is really not an issue. I will try to post pics of my setup one of these days, which I only use for intense gaming BTW [ ;)]
My take on this problem is that it is actually a graphics/display driver issue and less a power supply nor overheating issue. It might even be the actual graphics card. I will re-installing the most current graphics driver and install another game and play online. If the problem persists, then I will have to ask them to replace the actual graphics card [xx(] Hopefully this problem can easily be fixed, because I have at least two years of occasional gaming planned for this puppy before I get my awesome desktop gaming rig with that sweet SLI [ :D]

One more thing, I got my notebook with the 135W power. But I havn't found the adapter gets too hot even when I play the games. [ :D]
    My specs: XP Home / P4 3.0 / 40G 4200rpm / DVD RW / Wireless / bluetooth / 256M X600 / 512M DDR2

But everytime when I start my computer, the battery will be charged automatically. The battery controler shows that the battery is 99% or 100% 'in charging', after a few minutes, it finishes. So I wonder if it will reduce the battery life? or can I set the battery to recharge automatically at 95% for exemple?

For the person having problems with brightness, Have you
tried the Video Driver and BIOS updates, just a thought since
    there have been several.

They are listed at the HP website (drivers & downloads)

Hehe, I put the Omega drivers on and tweaked the speed of the video card up, lol, this thing rocks, it really out performs my ATI 9700pro running at stock speed.

But of course, I put it back to it's original settings, I don't feel like burning up a non replacable part of my notebook, was just curious if it would overclock and it really does, lol.

Hey everybody. I've had my x6000 for over a month now, and I must say that I am very pleased with it. However, I have noticed a slight problem. Is it just me, or is there slight lag of drawing time when, for instance, you drag a window around on the desktop. Do text and graphics go blurry or the edges of windows get jaggy when moving the window around? Maybe I just didn't notice when I first got this thing and I'm just being paranoid now. I did try overclocking this deal a while back and went a little over, but i promptly powered it off when I saw the screen full of artifacts. There have not been any noticable changes in performance; i still get the same 3dmark scores. I noticed that ATI says the mobility x600 has LCD-EE that is supposed to compensate for high lcd response times. maybe that got messed up? i don't know. Could someone please give me some insight?

    Hey everyone just an update,

I have tried to do the following since I last time:

    1. Updated the ATI driver from HP.com
    2. Updated the BIOS also
    3. Uninstalled and reinstalled the Power Management.
    3. Performed a Computer Health Scan through HP and everything is OK
    4. Performed a "Display Adapter" (Graphics card) diagnostic = OK

Played online again with MOHAA/SH online again and the same issue happened, the whole video image got darker as before out of the blue.
The other thing I am thinking is that there is a power surge or power disruption that could possibly interrupt the flow of current and cause the computer to conserve the power by reducing the brightness. Also perhaps my internet connection gets interrupted or slows down and causes a lag in the server I am playing in and affecting my graphics?? These are just speculations since I still can't figure out what's causing this problem. I will try playing these games without playing online and see if it happens again and plug it at another power outlet. Also I will try and install another game, Return to the Castle Wolfenstein and see if it happens with this game too. I will update you guys again soon, please respond if you have any suggestion on possible solutions thank you![ :D]

Im a little unclear about something.

When you say that you play for about 4hours at one time and the screen gets darker, have you tried to use the fn brightness keys to increase brightness and has it worked? If not have you been able to make it real dim using the brightness keys?

Secondly what is the environment like where you play your video games. Do you have lots of PC's on around you? Is it real hot? Real cool? What kind of circulation? If its real hot in your room or place you are gaming it doesn't matter how good you circulation of the notebook is, you will be circulating hot air. I am wondering if this is a heat issue or a power issue or both, maybe its the amount of heat at the amount of strain on the power supply.

Thirdly, you mention going to the properties of windows to adjust brightness. When you exit the game does windows look really bright or the same level. Have you tried just increasing the brightness of the game?

If you are working a PC as hard as you are, the environment plays an important part. You may also want to try a different breaker in your house as the power source.

It's been awile since I've been on here. I sent my laptop out for repair about 3.5 weeks ago and just got it back the other day. Had to have the system board replaced. Aparantly something metallic and/or wet came into contact with the media cable connector on the right side near the back and caused a massive short. I'd advise covering that connector to prevent this from happening to you.

But I got it back and works just like new. My only complaint about the whole experience was with FedEx and not HP. HP was pretty helpfull.

    Hey bgalpern,

You'll be happy to know you are not alone. I just recently hooked up my X6000 to several external CRT monitors and have the same static on every one of them. I've tried tons of stuff to get rid of it, but no luck. I have hooked up another older Compaq laptop to the same monitors and gotten no static whatsoever, so it's definitely the laptop, and not some external equipment around the laptop or monitor.

    Josephcruz,

Yes the function keys for brightness do work and have adjusted them to just medium brightness. When the "darkening" of the image does happen during online gaming, I adjust the brightness within the video graphics within the game NOT in Windows itself.

The environment is as follows, I live in a apartment complex with a computer center. I play in a conference room in the center and plug directly to a wall ethernet port, I guess part of a server. The times I play are "late" at night past 11pm to around 3-4am in the morning so no other pc is used. The room temp is very cool prolly around mid 60's and I plug my pc directly to my surge protector that's plugged to a wall outlet. To be honest, I don't notice anything wrong or "broken" with my pc except for this small issue which is quickly resolved by just increasing the brightness within the game. I think its a power issue of some sort[?] I have just installed Return to Castle Wolfenstein, I will try that too and see what happens. Also I will try playing somewhere else and NOT online, that might make a difference. I don't believe its a heat issue since the temp monitor tells me that temp is constant at 68-69c. I don't know if I am overly taxing the pc because these games are older than HL2 and Doom 3 [ :(!] Hopefully I resolve this issue, just don't know what else to do.... [V]

    * notice the new avatar, yes I can officialy diplay that now! *

Hey Wsup guy! Sorry been outta the loop for a bit. I've been busy playing with my 6000 for the past 2 weeks :) Anyway, just wanted to say that yes this thing is a bit heavy and yes it gets nice and warm, but I still love it.

I've been totally having a blast with it. After getting it, that night, I ran out and picked up a gig of ram for it. I have not upgraded the HD yet, and am still contemplating it. It seems to run ok for now with the 4200rpm. Either way I really like it and will try to get pics of it posted soon, not like you guys don't know what it looks like already. [ :p]

just wondering if someone has been able to down clock their cpu?

asking because since I got a desktop for gaming, I dont play games in this laptop anymore, I have been able to down clock the GPU through omega drivers, but will like to also underclock my 3.0ghz cpu in order to decrease heat and increase the life of this laptop

have tried rightmark cpu clock utility but to no success, or probably I am doing something wrong
    http://cpu.rightmark.org/

most likely because of the lock these oem manufactures put on the mutiplier

I've had my x6000 for about 2 months, and I'm having a problem with my wireless adapter. It worked fine for awhile after I updated the driver, but after about a month or so, it just stopped working. I tried updating the driver again, but that didn't help, so I called HP tech support. After trying several things, the tech concluded that the adapter was bad and said they would send me another one. When I received the adapter, it was about the size of a postage stamp! I called tech support again to report that my adapter was much larger than the one they sent me. The tech responded "Are you comfortable removing the keyboard cover and display panel?" After I finished laughing hysterically, I said no, and he said I would have to send it to California for repair.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this problem w/o sending the laptop to California? The adapter worked just fine for weeks, then just quit. Also, any idea what the postage stamp thing is that I received?

Thanks for the response, I guess I wasn't very clear. The wi-fi light worked when I was able to connect, but did not come on when I was no longer able to connect. I can still connect through a wired connection. I haven't tried a different O/S because I didn't make any changes to Windows between the time it worked and the time it didn't work (literally overnight). All I did the day before it stopped working was play World of Warcraft on a wireless connection for about 6-7 hours. When I booted up the next day, no wireless connection. I didn't install any new software, and the antivirus/spyware software (McAfee) was fully up to date. I haven't run any other spyware programs, I know I probably should. The adapter does show up on the device manager with a yellow exclamation mark, but disappeared from the networks window. The tech mainly had me delete the driver and reinstall the adapter, which did nothing.

I was willing to try the repair with instruction, until the tech said "you will be dismantling the entire computer until you're holding the motherboard in your hands." That sounded too extensive for a novice...plus I was having a lot of trouble understanding the tech, so I didn't really feel confident. He kept referring to the "hardest drive"...made me wonder how experienced he actually was :)
    [/quote]

The exclimation mark meant conflict, did you go in and see the message where it would normally say device is working properly? Can you get the adapter back with the exclimation mark again? The tech probably working with you didn't particularly want to go through the process. I don't know if you have ever put a desktop PC together but I don't think the notebook will be that much tougher. If you have to send it out than you have to send it out, but I'm not sure if its dead just yet, Usually if it dies windows won't see it at all, it just could be working funky. I still strongly suggest if you know someone who can help you out with over the phone support you take that option. It will be a while before you see your notebook again, plus they may even send you a new one, so you may want to wipe the drive before sending to them if you have personal data on it. Don't be overly intimidated because you will have the motherboard in your hand.

In truth the motherboard really is the pc. Everything else serves as slave components that the motherboard uses to facilitate everything you need. I would still give it a shot, if it looks like to much tell the tech on the phone and make preps to send it out.

the main focus right now should be how and why you have the exclimation mark. How long ago did you install WOW, did it install any patches the last time you went online. I don't know that the wireless light will only come on if the wireless card is working right. make sure that isn't the case. I guess if the notebook got really hot and the time frame you used it could hurt the adapter, but I think that is a far off answer.

The last thing that bothers me is I don't know if the new wi fi will solve your problem, But atleast if they can't get it to work at the shop they can easily replace what needs to be. Good luck if you notice anything or are unclear about something ask![ :D]

PC, I have the 1680x1050 screen and in its standard form it did strain my eyes tying to read the small type. I set the font size up 50% (Control Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced > General). You can try "Large Fonts," which is 125% of normal, but I moved it higher on the x6000. I have it set to 125% on my desktop, which has resolution at 1280x1024 on a 21" CRT monitor.

The downside is that some softare makers don't plan on this setting and sometimes type flows off the page or is otherwise unreadable. This doesn't happen often, but when it does it can fail to show type you might want to see. In one notorious example, PhotoShop CS would not show a crucial "Accept" button unless fonts were set to normal, which required a workaround since there was no way to make it work normally. This is just poor programming. I just live with the minor stuff, as reading the type is now manageable.

screen size is subjective. The higher the rsolution the more space on the desktop.

If you have problems seeing stuff, do the tweaks mentioned, or opt for a smaller resolution. I don't know that anyone can truely tell you if its better to have one size than the other, unless there are hardware issues with one size.

PC, that's a good question. I'm using this one for 2D photo-editing only, so I opted for the higher-res monitor to enlarge the desktop and to get the highest quality. I use 1280x1024 on my desktop CRT where I do most of my serious editing, but it is a dual-monitor system that enlarges the desktop to 2304 pixels wide. Having a wide desktop is nice so palettes can be placed on the second monitor out of the way.

I opted for the 1680x1050 BrightView because of the way the notebook will be used and the fact that I figured that higher res would enhance the quality of photos reproduced on the LCD screen. As it is, the quality is better than any LCD I've seen, and very near optimum photo-quality for editing. With some tweaking, mostly lowering contrast, the quality nearly matches this 21" CRT.

It would be interesting to compare photo reproduction with the lower-res BrightView, but I didn't have that option. I'm not a gamer, but it is possible there is some advantage to higher res in that arena, but I can't say. Small fonts and icons are not an issue as they can be enlarged to fit your preferences.

Just curious, has anyone taken the CD rom drive out of one of these things yet? I am having problems reading DVD+R's that I recorded on a different computer. I called HP and they are sending me out a replacement drive and I'm wondering how much ripping and tearing apart of this thing I'm gonna have to do? I have the single layer DVD drive and hopefully they will be sending me the Double Layer as a replacement since they don't offer the cheaper drive as an option anymore.

    X6000, 3.2 Ghz, 512meg ram, 256 ATI X600 video, 17" Brightview Screen, 60gig 7200rpm Hard Drive, 8X DVD Burner, 54g 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster

Upgrading from a Sager Celeron 500, 192meg ram, 6gig 4200 RPM Hard Drive, 8 meg ATI Rage LT Video Card, 15" Screen, 4X DVD player.
