Hi everybody ... tell me if Im right... As I saw in the customize options of X6000 and as I saw that you almost all have the PC4200(533mhz) then ... I conclude that everybody buy the 256MB DIMM and after that everybody buy its 1gb or even 2gb DIMM PC4200??? ... but how do I know wich brand and wich type of DIMM do I have to buy ... and where (wich store?)? And how do I know which DIMM is the correct to my X6000? ... (Im a begginer) Thanks a lot for your help

Anyone know of compliment adapters that are much lighter? Heard this one weighs in at 2.6 pounds. Something lighter to offset this beast would be great!

Tacjam did a great job addressing the RAM issue earlier in the thread as well.
Riceman, according to the guide, you can switch batteries if you put it hibernation:To resolve a low-battery condition when a charged battery pack
is available, turn off the notebook or initiate Hibernation, insert
a charged battery pack, and then turn on the notebook. -
Here is where you can get some bigger chips for this laptop, the link goes to some DDR2 PC4200 1 gig SODIMMS. The X6000 will accept DDR2 PC3200 or 4200 SODIMMS. Newegg will probably be the cheapest but you might look around just in case.

Has anyone else bought a notebook cooler or carrying case for this notebook yet, I am curious as to how they work out. I actually want another notebook case that is bigger to give more room for accessories.

This bag was a birthday present I received over the weekend.

It feels very well built. And it has just enough storage space not to make it to bulky. Although it is kinda big.

I would really like to buy a cooler but I'm still a little unsure about them.
How do they fit under a 17" notebook?
It would seem to me that they would slide around or worse fall off of it.
How much do they hang off of it?
Since the notebook is bigger then the cooler are there any fans blocked on the notebook?
Are there rubber pads that hold the notebook in place or some other type of holder?
Just a couple questions that I know someone will have answers for []
And here is a little pat on the back to TacJam, JosephCruz, and Riceman. You guys have really made this a great thread!!

I think it is simply supply and demand. I know there was a delay of 7 days if you had chosen the 60GB 7200 drive. Not sure if it is still the same now.

I feel out of place on this board. i have lots to gain and nothing to offer except thanks.
I'm trying to figure out why they raised the price on the 60 7200 HD. Is it different. Simple supply & demand. Was a $25 upgrade a mistake to begin with. (it couldn't have been it was up there to long)
Was it a rebuilt from the OEM. Anybody able to answer these questions for me? Lucky bastards -
I applied for the APP student discount the day before the price went up.
I procrastinate too long. Now I will have to decide if i could live with 256ram for who knows how long or wait for a price drop.

To smooth out your gaming a little more you may want to set a seperate account up for you to use when you are just gaming. On this other account have all unnecessary services turned off as well as running processes. This will free up not only the RAM but the CPU as well.
Turn off all the graphical stuff on XP for this account as well. Stuff like this is done by those how play in the quakecom tourneys and so forth, to give a little extra performance.

Just a quick update.
I've been loading up my x6000 for the past week now with all my applications for work, home and gaming.
The performance on this puppy is phenominal.
I highly recomend upgrading the memory to 1+gig, especially if you plan on doing any gaming. It will smooth out the play on them.
I just started playing World of Warcraft on my laptop last night and was playing around with the video settings. I was getting some hideous lag when playing it in windowed mode at one of the lower (Wide) resolutions. I've found that it's not a good idea to play in windowed mode as it makes the graphics card do a ton more work to render the 3D in the window as well as the desktop. I switched off windowed mode and set the resolution to it's max (1680x1050). Man does this look sweet! I've had to turn down the Antistropic filtering and turn off Trillinear buffering, but you don't even notice those missing at such a high resolution. There is however a small amount of lag, I chalk this up to the fact that at such high resolution, WoW easily chews up 500mb+ of RAM. I now fully plan to upgrade to a gig (2x512mb pc4200).
Thanks again to the crew on this thread. I've never been happier with such an "expensive" purchase.

The config looks good, and from the manuals the cpu is upgradeable if you choose to do so. Toms Hardware pretty much said if you had to choose between a few hundered MHz and a 7200 RPM drive, get the drive you will see more of a performance gain.
If it is anything like my past laptops upgrading the cpu took a few minutes, it just uses a different hold down mechanizm in the form a little screw that shifted the pin holes to secure the cpu. In the case of a socket T cpu if should have a hold down plate which would equally be easy replace a cpu with.
My X6000 is stuck in Indy right now, I should have it by tomorrow, I can't wait to get off my Dell I8200 2.2GHz to something with a little more pep and a lot more screen and video card. []

Hey everyone,
I refrained from doing this yesterday as I didn't want to crap up this great thread but... I can't help it. I think this laptop might be perfect for me and want to hear from the x6000 gurus. I've been following this thread for days and it's really the only info and dialogue I have been able to find thats useful. Anyway, I posted in the hardware forum that I'm looking for a new laptop along with the functionality I need. I just keep coming back to the x6000. Can you guys take a look at http://www.notebookreview.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12669 and let me know what you think on that thread or via the email function of this forum.
Thanks,
Dave

That cooler looks nice, but I would look for reviews to see performance. A large heatsink under your notebook may help keep it cooler, but I don't know what it does to the surface you have it on over time.
Intresting though. If you get it let me know how well it works, I may buy it to help battery life.

Im thinking of getting this cooler because of its simplicity, kind of like a heat sink but a little better. -
Well, guess I have to wait till after 6:30pm tonight to pick it up, it is on the truck for delivery and no one was home. [

Did anyone get the docking station?
I was considering it for obvious reasons but since it negates the possiblity of using a cooler... which seem beneficial to the overall heatlh of the machine... I'm not sure.
Joseph, I got your email. Thanks for replying. I actually am the original poster at http://www.notebookreview.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12669
So those are my usage details. -
I have 3 things for this reply.
First I want to thank everyone for their words of encouragement for those of us that are in Iraq right now. Its good to know that we have people that are supporting us back home.
Secondly, Addressing the issue with the 60GB 7200 going up in price. The hd didnt go up in price, it is the same price, the difference is that the 80gb 5400 hd is not being offered right now. The 60gb 7200 was only a $25 upgrade from the systems standard 80gb 5400. But since they dont have the 80gb right now the upgrade from the standard hd they are using now in place of the 80gb is $125. The price is still the same, it just looks like more.
Thirdly, I just have to say I got an email from my wife and my X6000 arrived today. This means I am a proud owner. Unfortunately I still have some time left over seas before I can get my hands on it. Oh well, at least I know it is there waiting for me. I am having a good friend of mine load all my games and drivers for me while I am away. This way my system will be ready to rock and roll the second I get my hands on it.
Thanks to everyone for contributing to this thread. You have all made me even more satisfied with my decision on the X6000. Keep up the posts, there is some really good info going around. -
I am using my x6000 right now to make this post. [
] This thing is really sweet. The dislpay is awesome, everything looks really crip and vivid on it. The right side of the touchpad does get a little warm but it is managable. My 2 sticks of 512 pc2-4200 went in like a charm.
I did have one problem though. When I opened the top the keyboard was kinda humped up above the number 8 and 9 key. I called tech support and they wanted to pick it up and have me wait 4 more weeks to fix it. After I've only used it 15 minutes! LOL. Then they said that Radio Shack is an authorized Compaq center and they would take it apart there. If your RS is like all the ones around me then I'll pass! Then the sales department came on and said that They will get me another notebook first then take the one I have now. But, I have to buy the new one and get a credit later. No Way.
So I looked at the manual that is posted in this thread and fixed it myself. One of the tabs that lock the keyboard into place was not set. It rested on top of it. You have to remove the LED bar above the keyboard to get at the latches.
Sorry for the long post, just playing with this beast! And a little info in case your keyboard is like mine. Instead of going through HP's way of making you wait another month to fix a simple problem.
Bottom line is this thing is Great! When everyone gets theirs you will not be disappointed!

Ok, this thing is sweet, I picked it up last night and uninstalled all the crap software they put on, MS Money, Office 2003, Norton, Win DVD and loaded it up with all my software and it runs like a Top... Takes less than 30 seconds to boot, slightly faster than my desktop. I got it here at work with me and am loading all the other essential software on it now. First thing it did when I booted it up was try to connect to the wireless network here, heh, it's locked down so it wouldn't validate my username. Anyway, I couldn't be happier with it.
Oh, btw, get this, when I opened the box it had an extra power supply in with it, woot, not sure why they gave me two. Anyway, I brought the extra one in with me and went over to the hardware guyz at work, they order the HP's, the 8000 model and swapped the power supply with one that comes with them, much lighter. So, not only do I have two, I have a heavy one to keep at home and a lighter one to travel around with me. Can Life Get Any Better?

Hehe [
] I read somewhere in this post that they mailed someone else an extra power supply, not sure what was up with that. I was hoping the screen would be upgraded to but no luck. I only got the bright view that has the max res of 1400 something or other. Opted for that screen because my eyes are so bad I wouldn't put it at the higher resolution anyway.
Heh, I'm PCanywhere'd into my computer at home right now downloading the newest Power DVD player and transferring it here to my work PC so I can burn it onto a cd and move it over to the new Lappy. They have everything blocked here with Websense but they haven't caught on yet to me connecting thru either remote desktop or PCanywhere to home. []

Got it and its working nicely. Very quick load up, doing the same as a previous poster and removing alot of the crap that compaq installed on it. Norton;s the first to go, getting cleansweep instead for $30 at newegg
VS .NET is absolutely gorgeous with this screen same for macromedia suite amongst many other apps. Fully taking advantage of all the viewing space.
DVDs run very smoothely only hiccup on the start then its just butter. Games are pretty good. You may not want the max settings but it still works. Notice jitters with cs, I still have more options to tweak out for it. Cant use the online games at work though since the ports are all blocked.. but so much more I can use it for.
Ive been playing these games just fine though with the wireless connection at home...
And dont forget, this is great for child prevention!
