find and open MSIAfterburner.cfg (open with notepad)

find this section of the text and replace it with the following:

    Code:
    [ATIADLHAL]
UnofficialOverclockingEULA = I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it
    UnofficialOverclockingMode = 2
    AccessibilityCheckingPeriod = 0

    Thankyou Ironman!

I pre-ordered Skyrim months ago, so when I booted it up for the first time only to have all sorts of strange textural issues I was pretty gutted to say the least.

Since then I've spent hours trying to figure out a way to update these drivers, none of which that have worked until I found this.

Oh and to those asking about whether this would work on dv6/dv7 - I have a dv6, and it has worked flawlessly so far. Just installed 11.10 over the top of the current drivers, and all seems well.

    Thanks again

    IRONMAN!

Thank you, sir. Reading your posts have really been a huge help.

I've an Envy 14 Beats, i5-450m, and I can't believe the lack of support from HP and AMD for the dear 5650. It's truly pathetic that I had to search all around the 'net for help because I can't get it direct, and found it here.

Also, I too just tried Skyrim on my rig....holy cow, what a crapfest. When I read the minimum requirements for the game, I thought this laptop would be able to handle it on the lowest of settings at the very least. NO!

It's like watching a train wreck. It can't even run it on the lowest of the low. I'm very underwhelmed because I've been watching people play Dead Rising 2, among other games, on high settings and great framerate on Youtube with an i3 and 5650, and it completely puts my computer's performance to shame.

Alas, I bought this Envy for $300 on eBay, and through the still valid warranty, had almost the entire thing replaced for free due to malfunctioning parts. So I shouldn't complain.

I'm still going to, of course.

    liam19,

    UnofficialOverclockingMode = 1

I believe this should be set equal to 1, not 2.

0 equals false, 1 equals true.

See if that helps it out.

Dude, Skyrim runs like garbage on my HP Envy 14 as well. I accepted it at first but when I saw videos of inferior hardware running it just fine (at least playable) I began to wonder if I was doing something wrong. Have you been able to fix this?

I've been playing Skyrim on high with no issues. 11.10 installed over HP drivers. I accidentally did a regular install when trying to update to 11.10 and had issues. Had to reinstall HP drivers then install over to correct. Otherwise I just cleared my vents of dust and have had no problems other that the not HP-Envy specific map crashing every now and then which is widely reported.

'cause I honestly thing skyrim is kinda cpu bound more than gpu bound and a sandy bridge cpu may help

I updated to 11.11 and have noticed BF3 tends to crash and freeze during gameplay. It was stable in 11.10 v3. Anyone else experiencing this?

    also

Ironman what are the differences between your drivers and the official optional download from AMD site? I've seen a size difference, the name. I there something else modded besides the install on switchable graphics capability that your drivers haves.?

well. they have the drivers in them, generally.

these are direct links from AMD's website that you have to download the catalyst downloader to normally get to.

that downloader will notice your computer is a switchable graphics one with an intel gpu and say "no, you can't have drivers" and not download anything for you.

the file that you see that's similar in size to the ones on here is everything else in the package (so everything but the drivers)

HEEELP OMG IM THE UNLUCKIEST GUY EVER! Now I did what iron man told me a few weeks ago about

    Restart in safe mode
Uninstall ati and intel hd from device manager
    restart
uninstall ALL AMD software via de express uninstaller
    restart
    install stock drivers
    restart
    install latest driver

    now i did this
but when installen the AMD DISPLAY DRIVER with the install manager, the screen goes 800x600 (as usual when you are updating your drivers) but then it nevers goes back, instead the computer restarts!! it happens with all the drivers i tried 11.10 even the preview drivers for 11.10 HEEEEEEEEELP!

    might have my issue.

you gotta go stock (well stock 10.6 not stock 10.3 assuming you're on an envy 14-1xxx) ---> 11.2 ---> 11.whatever

    no.

you just have to put 11.2 on as an intermediary for whatever reason.
then you can put any version on top of it in the 11.x stuff (so from 11.2 to 11.11 or 11.10 prelease 3 or whatever.

at the moment I don't recommened 11.10 release since its giving me blank monitor issues when you wake the computer up from sleep (doesn't matter which gpu I'm on either which is odd)

hmm...I'm still on 11.0 and I had a blue screen/restart when trying to install drivers that weren't 11.2 (until I had 11.2 on there on top of the stock drivers)

some people have noticed that 11.11 is crashing battlefield 3. Also keep in mind that something about the newer drivers or just updating from stock can break powerplay. It'll decide to get stuck at 300/300 clocks until you turn powerplay off and back on with the envy 14. At least it does it to me.

I eventually just setup some hotkeys in the catalyst control panel to quickly turn powerplay off and on a few times whenever I unplug the laptop or swap gpus..or both.

Question: can I install the stock 2xxx drivers on a 1xxx to get a more-updated Intel driver before updating the ATI stuff, or should I just go with the 1xxx driver package?

Well if your envy 14 is 2xxx then of course you can use 2xxx stock drivers, but if you have a 1xxx then you must use 1xxx stock drivers? I wouldnt recomend it, its like saying hey can I put moonster truck tires in my bicycle just to have all terrain tires. lol (thats my opinion though)

Don't do it. Different switvhablegraphics. The 2000s don't have two seperate gpu's so you would lose Intel drivers all together instead of update. Btw, I believe windows updates Intel thru win update.

The 2000 series uses a different Intel driver set than the 1000 series. More likely, it just simply fail outright since nothing will match.

Windows Updates, also contains OEM specific drivers so pretty much you're getting the same version or slimmed version of the same driver set downloaded off HP. Provided that HP gave the drivers to Windows Update Catalog.

Windows Update drivers have much higher precedence than the ones you install yourself. It overrides everything regardless of version, so keep that in mind.

Thanks for that - I'll be following MagusDraco's upgrade path from the 1xxx stock drivers, then. No Windows Update, of course - Windows Update for GPU drivers is a terrible idea.

Next big question: Has anyone managed to get their Intel GPU and their 5650 both updated to the latest drivers, or will updating the Intel drivers override the GPU-switching stuff, or even simply fail?

I've never really gotten the intel gpu drivers to update. I don't think they actually can be updated due to switchable graphics stuff.

I mean I know when you reformat the laptop windows update installs something for them but those get overwritten when you install the HP gpu drivers and then windows update never seems to ask about the intel gpu again.

Hi, I have an Envy14 1050ea. When I try to install any of these, the installer gets to the point where you choose "install" or "uninstall", I select install and the dialog disappears and nothing happens. Windows then comes up with the "Did this run correctly?" message, but nothing it suggests helps.

Am I doing something wrong? Sorry If I'm being stupid!

You are not being stupid at all, trust me I was as worried as you were in the beginning but thanks tot he help of Ironman and magus and everyone on this forums my lap is running like a charm.

First of all, what updates have you installed?

    Also have you tried this?

    1. Restart the computer in safe mode (Press F8 during the HP logo, until a menu shows)

2.Go to device manager (Start -> Control Panel -> Device Manager)
3.Go to display adapters, right click INTEL HD and then Uninstall(NOT DISABLE) this device, also check the delete driver software. Also Right click ATI RADEON 5650, and Uninstall device, also check the delete driver software.

4.Once both devices are uninstalled succesfully, restart your computer in normal mode.

5.(Once your computer starts it should be in 800x600 resolution dont panic, it will recogninze 2 new devices, you should wait until it finish installing DONT RESTART IF ASKED) Uninstall AMD Catalyst install manager, and select EXPRESS UNINSTALL.

6.Restart your computer in normal mode

    7. install the 11.2 drivers that are located in Ironmans signature, restart.

8.Install the latest drivers or whatever drivers you want now.

    ENJOY!

note: this is what worked for me and with help of magus and other ones i figured out how to fix it, its a pain in the to update envy 14 drivers but i love my lap :D

The laptop can run without a driver because windows will load some minimal basic driver that will allow the computer to function and you can install the latest driver.

For you now: download the latest driver (11.11 now) and install it and you are done.

Great thread, I've had this bookmarked now for many months, I check here for the latest driver updates. I fail at finding the proper ones on AMD's website. They always say they're incompatible with my 5650m and to get the update from HP, which they haven't updated in over a year. Can you please provide the download link to 11.11a? It's suppose to improve performance on Skyrim. Thanks.

    Hey guys,

Ive been at this for 5 hours now, I have a gen 1 envy 14 with w7.

I have tried the exact procedure on the front page a few times.

I have tried the procedure in the notes a few pages back.

Yet every time I load skyrim it dies about 3 seconds into gameplay.

After the installation of 11.2 I have restarted and tried 11.11a, redid everything then tried 11.11, redid everything then tried 11.10.

Would be forever grateful for some help.

    Stuart

could be bad game install? I have no idea how it would perform because I dont have it so try Gaming Lounge to see how everyone is running it.

Its a steam game, just validated the files.

My driver package version is still 8.911.1-111118a-128935E-ATI

With the cat at 11.11. Is that right?

It seems like I'm crashing when playing BF3 using the 11.11.
    Anyone experiencing this as well?

Is the 11.10 'fine'? I used to be okay when using the 11.09
