Hey there. I'm having problems trying to get display drivers to work properly recently on my Envy 14 (I think it's a 1050ea).
On start up this week I got a new error message saying mom.exe, which I think is the Catalyst Control Centre (CCC) program, couldn't start ... (0xc000007b). I googled it and I think a 0xc000007b error is something to do with x64 and x86 compatibility... (mom.exe file location on my computer is C:\Program Files (x86)\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static). Something to do with it being a 32bit program but it has a lot of 64bit dependent dll/exe's(?). I was looking at this post:
0xc000007b Error Solution « Madhat Alsoos
...and I got as far as the solution section, but didn't quite understand it. In their example, they are running a 32bit exe and they found a few x64 dll dependency, whereas I get hundreds from mom.exe. Not sure what to do. Should there be a x64 version of mom.exe? Something like that? Any help?
So as a consequence of this, my graphics aren't working properly; I think it's stuck on Intel HD graphics, and running poorly at that. Configure Switchable Graphics/Graphics Properties both don't work... just does nothing.
I tried system restore back to a point last week, but the same error comes up.
I tried stripping all the graphics drivers back and starting again. I uninstalled both Intel HD and Radeon 5650 in Device Manager, did uninstall of all ATI software, cleared using CCleaner and Driver Fusion to get rid of it all. Restarted in safe mode, then reinstalled stock AMD HD graphics drivers (sp50656), AMD and Intel graphics drivers (sp48434), then 11-2_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl. ... same problems. I'm still stuck on integrated graphics.
After that, I've tried reinstalling the chipset drivers along with the graphics drivers again. Same thing.
Any thoughts? -
mom.exe? wth never seen that, u sure its not a virus?
IronMan if you read this, please can you provide link for 12.8? I cant seem to find a link for it, and the other ones I see on the internetz seem to be modded and crash my laptop!
also for anyone trying to make switchable graphics work in w8
Install w8 (must be a fresh install)
Download AMD High Definition Graphics from HP website for your laptop (Mine is 1110nr Envy 14).
Install those (name is like sp5056).
Download 11.10 from Ironmans first post, and install, thast how far ive gotten and switchable graphics work ok.
I got an error message of OpenCL not working properly, thats why I want 12.8 but I cant seem to find a version that doesnt crash my laptop. IRONMAN PLEASE HELP! -
updated 12.8, says support for windows 8
-
thanks ur the best
i had the bsod too on envy 14 during installing AMD DISPLAY DRIVER.
ill take that as a sign 12.8 doesnt work with envy's -
Yup most likely :/
-
Also had BSOD installing 12.8 on Envy 14.

I rolled back go w7, it was too much hassle, I installed AMD High Definition driver from hp website and on top of that installed 11.10 (those where the only ones that worked on w8) BUT you must insatll em with admin rights an w7 compat mode!
-
Just to check given the above post.
I thought as long as we do a clean install and just use leshcat drivers 12.9 for Hp envy 14 1st gen, everything works fine without hassle?
If not, what is the procedure to get everything working? -
I've pulled the trigger and installed 12.10. It works OK - mostly. No BSOD, no stability issues, however - switchable graphics do not seem to be working. According to anandtech, this should be fixed with 12.11 (currently in beta).
Furthermore, after installing the driver the laptop seems to think that I am running some sort of a multi-monitor setup, and my cursor gets lost to the left hand side of the screen (presumably is somewhere on the non-existant screen 2). Also, have had problems after installation because I was getting the black screen instead of a login screen! Fixed that by click and then typed the password blind. This brought up the desktop, where I was able to change the latop screen to screen 1, which now displays the login screen correctly!
Overall, I am 80% happy how W8 works on envy 14 (12xx) - now that I've gotten it working. If you don't play games, I suggest sticking with intel graphics, at least until 12.11 is released. Or living with a few tradeoffs, as described above. Or perhaps there is a simple solution that I am missing!
Edit: I've managed to get rid of the quasi multi-monitor setup - plaid with CCC a bit. However, did get a few black screens in the process, and struggled a bit to get the normal login screen. 90% happy now - would still like to get switchable graphics back. -
I have Win 8 Pro official release build, and I've been having a lot of trouble getting the display to work right. I put a new hard drive into my Envy 14t-1000, and did a clean install. For a while, I was just getting a black screen after the Windows boot screen (before seeing the log in), and it took me half the day to figure out that Windows thinks I have an external display attached. (If anyone's having a similar issue, pressing the Windows key + p + down arrow will switch between displays and get something showing on your screen.)
I don't care about switching between AMD and Intel if I can just get the AMD 5650 to work. I've disabled the Intel card in the device manager, but then in the notifications bar it still has an icon saying I'm using Intel graphics.
Anyone have any idea on how to get rid of the 'ghost' monitor on Windows 8? -
I tried win 8 pro and experiencing a lot of headache! I have the first gen Envy 14 1XXX and tried numerous tricks to get the switchable graphic to work, I managed to get the ATI driver to work but as a result the FAN kept on turning on all the time and there is no sleep option! I left my computer occasionally and this is just unacceptable, after few days I decided to go back to win 7. Good thing I make a system image before attempting this journey.
Folks, until HP release a Win 8 driver, dont even bother trying...just a waste of time! -
Well I managed to get switchable graphics working, what I did was, go into HP WEBSITE and look for your ENVY 14 model drivers, mine was 1110NR, download display AMD HIGH DEFINITION driver, run it on win 7 mode (THE EXTRACTED FILES, C:/SWF/YOUVERSION). I used 11.10 and worked perfectly!

How do Leschat 12.10 drivers work for the envy 14 1st gen? Any problems and if not, what is the proper way to ensure it works on my envy 14...thanks so much!
#on windows 8 -
Leschat? dont download modded drivers just download from 12.10 from here:
http://www2.ati.com/Drivers/mobile/12-10_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql_net4.exe
install them over stock drivers, if you dont know how to do this:
1.Restart your pc in safe mode (Press f8 during startup screen).
2.Go to DEVICE MANAGER, and then Uninstall AMD RADEON HD xxx and Intel HD. (Check delete software for this device).
3.Start your PC in normal mode.
4.Go to control panel, Uninstall a program, and then uninstall AMD INSTALL MANAGER.
5. Select EXPRESS UNINSTALL ALL AMD SOFTWARE.
6.Let windows finish installing the 2 devices it detected.
7. Restart in normal mode.
8.Install 12.10.
Enjoy? This is what worked for me, I have a w7 ultimate x64 clean install, but this should work if you have stock OS installation. -
Sry I meant with windows 8 as I know leschat was having some sleep and resume issues with the amd radeon card on 12.9
-
I have the original Envy 14 with radiance screen. When I try to install 12.10 my brightness keys (f2 & f3) don't work (even using Fn). For some reason also when I press f3 it redirects me to the Search in the top right hand corner of windows/internet explorer. Anyone else experiencing this?

Nice post Ironman! This will be very useful to a lot of Envy owners.
I'll definitely direct my friend to this thread. Keep up the good work. -
so I did a clean install of win8 pro x64

read a lot of posts but nothing worked so far,
also uninstaled the wdm driver
is there a proper procedure for clean win8 ati drivers
my laptop is 14t-1100
hmm ok i got it working, apparently i had to disable the intelhd graphics and instal the 12.10 catalyst as admin in w7 compatibility mode -

I'm a HP Dv6TSE 1st gen user with AMD 5650 and Intel HD switchable graphics and i have this problem as well
I have AMD Catalyst 12.10 and brightness doesn't work either.. If you have Win 8 there is a fix, I found the following below. If you have Win 7 x64 like i do maybe reverting back to AMD 12.9 is teh best choice for now. the latest AMD drivers don't seem to support the FeatureTestControl value of f840 in registry [See below]
Quoted from: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-dv6-3xxx-dv7-4xxx-envy-17-1xxx-intel-41.html
If you get a solution for Win 7 x64 5650 + Intel with AMD Catalyst 12.10 please post for other dv6 users to know as well @ http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-dv6-3xxx-dv7-4xxx-envy-17-1xxx-intel-41.html

Running Win 8 Pro x64, the drivers don't work for me either. The only one that works as it should is the one off HP's website (ones that start with sp). All the latest drivers give two problems for me 1) cannot switch between cards, and 2) detects two laptop screens with no ability to disable the imaginary screen without also disabling the real one. The 11.10 that somebody suggested does not work for me, if I run the driver with Win 7 compatibility, the Catalyst Install Manager hangs, and if I run it without compatibility mode, I can't switch to integrated card.
Also, with all of the drivers I've tried, including stock, 11.10, and the latest ones (12.4 12.8 12.10), the graphics performance is terrible, compared to when I was running Win 7. I don't think I saw any mention of this, any ideas on how to improve it?
EDIT: it might have been ATI's damn powerplay, changing this setting from maximize battery life to maximize performance boosted the framerate, I think to what it was with Win 7. I'm probably gonna stick with the stock drivers for now. Anyway, thanks for uploading the drivers ironman, been using these for a while. -
Instructions to succesfully install drivers on w8x64:
IMPORTANT: CREATE A RESTORE POINT, BECAUSE IF INSTALLATION FAILS, W8 LOVES TO RESTORE YOUR PC AUTOMATICALLY.
0. if you can get into safe mode, uninstall all display devices from safe mode. if not go to step one on nomral startup.
1.download AMD High Definition driver from hp website.
2.Download latest amd driver, (I am using beta 11 currently).
3.run spxxxx (whatever number is), no need to run it on w7 comptibility.
4.go to C:\SWSetup\SP50656 and run setup.exe on w7 compatibility mode (use express install).
5.run your amd driver setup (the one you downloaded, again no need to compatibility).
6.go to C:\AMD\AMD_Catalyst_12.11_Beta11 (this is the one for beta drivers).
7.run setup, click express install. (since latest drivers are w8 compatible you shouldnt need to use compatiblity mode but if it fails, try again).
check your driver version is latest one 9.18 or something like that. at least
at least this is how I got my switchable graphics to work on a clean w8 pro x64 install no need to mess with the registry or anything, or use modded files. worked like a charm. -
-
12.10 was giving bsod, the only reason i installed beta is because improves performance in bf3 and far cry 3, if u dont do then dont mind installing them.
try 11.10 those work like a charm!
why are you having those problems? instll over stock HP drivers to keep switchable graphics. -
I'm using Windows 7 x64, what are the "best" drivers to be using? 12.10? Or one of the earlier ones?
-
Drivers after 12.4 need confirming but 12.10 is definitely BSOD on windows 7. -
Hei guys, i dont have envy, but dv7, and i installed the last version cauz i couldnt find another thread with updated drivers for hd 5650/intel mobility. In devide manager it says 8.961.0.0 (12.4), can i keep this? or theres a better driver for dv7s.
Thx for helping -
Check this one

Got switchable, etc, etc. on a clean win 8 install, but now brightness is broken. Even after I tried the dv6 registry fix.
Ill take that over ghost screens, and card crashes. Anyone know if 12.11 betas fix the brightness issue?
EDIT: Cant run the intel card on battery for some reason. The screen goes black, but it works fine when plugged in.
Wait whaaattt! Is there ever going to be a fix for these problems

Hey Guys. I have an HP DV6-3140ee with switchable graphics (AMD 5650 + intel graphics). I've never updated the AMD driver, and from the device manager this is what I have: (( Driver Date: 6/21/2010. Driver Version: 8.741.1.1000 )).
Can someone plz tell me which version is the best to keep switchable graphics working. Also, how do I install this driver? Appreciate any help! -
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
Just for a data point:
I recently reinstalled Windows 7 x64 on my CTO Envy 14-1000. I went here for the latest compatible switchable GPU drivers (posted Jan. 18, 2012) and then successfully updated directly to 12.10. I have some issues waking from sleep, especially when I sleep on battery and wake on AC (possibly due to automatic switching when plugging/unplugging), but I haven't had any other problems.
I've seen some posts saying this machine will only work with drivers up to 12.4 on Windows 7, but that hasn't been my experience. The sleep issue's a bit of a pain and I might dig a bit deeper into it at some point, but that's been the only issue and I can't certify that it's an issue with the AMD driver. -
I only tested past 12.4 and windows 7 with the envy 17 and it gave a BSOD.
Another user posted BSOD with an Envy 14 windows 7 but didnt say which generation so I assumed the driver does not function on windows 7 until further testing. -
alright so I sold my envy 14, it was showing its age, and I needed to upgrade, sadly I had no money and thats why I sold it, Im so sad and excited at the same time for the new rig, but so many memories with my old envy

Just had a catastrophic driver failure.
To remedy the problems i was having before, I just did a clean install over the Christmas break. Come Jan 21st, I was using it just fine. Powered down, and woke it up and noticed CCC.exe was not running. Checked the event manager, and turns out just an hour before CCC was reported as faulting, and the Kernalbase.dll was the faulting module.
So, I did a system restore to the 19th; I keep good backups and thought I was saved. However, even after a restore, nothing was fixed. The machine booted with intelHD graphics, and failed to even recognize the ATI card.
I did some quick and dirty driver cleaning and re-installed the drivers. First the updated Win8 stock drivers, then 12.10.
Now the ATI card only half-way works. There's no brightness, no switchable, no power management.
I'm very quickly tiring of this process every month, and I haven't installed anything since the rebuild; all the support going out to the Envys has been awful, and buggy. I just want something that works now.
EDIT: Even trying to switch graphics cards results in the uninstall of the ATI Card. HOW?
Seriously considering parting this Envy out so I can get something stable. I can't have it crashing when I need to to school work.
Its got a radiance screen so someone wants it right? -
So I took a gamble and installed 13.1 on my x64 Windows 7 Envy, it all seems to work well except for the brightness controls (don't work at all) and there is quite a long delay in getting the monitor to display if you switch power supplies whilst the lid is closed (so moving from AC to battery and vice-versa). If I could get the brightness controls working, i'd be pretty happy and probably keep 13.1, but if I can't... probably roll back
Anyone else tried it? -
Okay I have Envy 14-1190ea and did a clean Win7 64 install.
No matter what I do I can't get any 5650 driver to work. I followed the instructions in post 1 to the letter:
1. download stock AND latest driver (and 11.2 if Envy 14 10XX)
2. disconnect from internet and shut down.
3. go to safe mode.
4. go to device manager and remove the drivers for both Intel and ATI cards and choose not to save the driver software.
5. restart.
6. open any ATI driver update setup file and choose remove all ATI software.
7. restart.
8. install stock.
9. restart.
I used the 8.771.1.0 (sp50656.exe) stock driver. On reboot I get a black screen and reboot in a loop.
Any help is much appreciated.
P.S. flashed BIOS to F.26 -
the first restart after the safe mode uninstall of devices, did you let the PC install the new hardware?
you must let it install new hardware, then restart and then apply the drivers you downloaded. the restart loop is because you did something wrong between stock and latest driver.
try staying with stock and see if that solves the problem. -
I have a problem with the lastest update 13.1. I can't adjust luminosity of screen. However, it still works with Intel graphic.
-
-
In fact, i had some graphic bugs in the game LOL with the stock drivers. Thus i don't want to roll back to it.
